visit the Everett Animal Shelter. There are a number of cats, dogs and small animals look-ing for a forever home to call their own.

When you adopt from the Everett Animal Shelter, you can feel good know-ing you’re not just giving an animal a good home, you’re also getting a great deal.

Affordable adoption fees for dogs or cats include spaying or neutering, � rst vac-cines, worming, microchipping, a collar and more. These services together would cost much more than the modest cost of adoption.

But the Everett Animal Shelter isn’t just about cats and dogs. Adoption fees for birds, guinea pigs, rabbits and other small pets are also very affordable and sometimes include their cage.

a-la-la-mazing. That’s the artistic twist Schack Art Center in Everett gives each holiday season.

What does that mean for you? An opportunity to � ll gift boxes and Christmas stockings with cashmere scarves, stunning bracelets, turned wood art and stoneware creations all handmade by popular local artists.

The fa-la-la season at Schack begins with its holiday art exhibit that runs until Dec. 27, at which over 50 artists from the Northwest Watercolor Society have displays for the community to enjoy and make

purchases from. Whimsical artistry from Chica Brunsvold,

the coastal brushstrokes of Molly LeMaster, Richard McDiarmid’s painted light series and rich transparencies created by Peg Rosenlund provide a sampling of the beauty and creativ-ity Schack guests will enjoy.

Thursdays in December will be especially popular days for holiday shopping as The Schack Shop features local artists in three holiday trunk shows.

Judy Macauley and Karen Lyons will be the featured artists on Dec. 4. Macauley, a Seattle glass artist, will sell fused-glass orna-

ments, decorative plates, whimsical tiles and more. As her counterpart, Lyons will provide a softer side of art with hand-painted silk scarves and a demonstration of silk painting.

On Dec. 11, Carie Collver and Madeline Chadwick will show their wares. Each focuses their skills on wearables. Collver’s fashions include earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Chadwick is known for her stylish and trendy designer handbags, purses and totes.

Melinda Barnett, who incorporates handmade, vintage and recycled components into her jewelry, along with Susie Howell, designer of one-of-a-kind cashmere scarves, glovelettes and accessories, will round out the trunk show on Dec. 18.

Each trunk show runs noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

From noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, shoppers will � nd a treasure trove of artistic gifts and home furnishings from 35 local artists at Schack’s Fa-La-La: Holiday Sale of Fine Arts and Crafts.

During Friday’s Fa-La-La event, happy hour will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. and Maren Oates, marketing manager, invites you to enjoy beer or wine and light appetizers along with live music by Glen Cunningham.

ickets are now on sale for one of the greatest holiday traditions — “The Nutcracker” by the Olympic Ballet Theatre. The full-length, tra-

ditional family favorite has been enchanting local audiences since 1982.

Principal guest artists for this year’s production include former Paci� c North-west Ballet principal Mara Vinson, freelance artist Jennifer Safonovs and Le Yin, former Paci� c Northwest Ballet and Houston Ballet principal dancer. Artistic directors are Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.

Performances are at the Everett Per-forming Arts Center on Dec. 13 and 14 and the Edmonds Center for the Arts on Dec. 19 through 21. Last year all but one performance sold out, so it is recommended to buy tickets early. Groups of 10 or more may qualify for a discount.

The wonderful dancing, story, music and props of “The Nutcracker” make it an ideal � rst performance to introduce children to the ballet. In fact, Olympic Ballet Theatre

offers special one-hour performances that are perfect for school groups and young children. These matinees are on Dec. 12 in Everett and Dec. 18 in Edmonds.

But the Olympic Ballet Theatre isn’t just about “The Nutcracker. “ The company recently completed a very successful Fall program.

Spring 2015, will offer an exciting mix of both classical and contemporary dance that showcases the artists’ diversity. The offerings include traditional classic “Paquita” grand pas classique and “Nyman,” a new contempo-rary work that will be shown in its entirety for the � rst time.

The Olympic Ballet Theatre is a non-pro� t performing company dedicated to sharing and promoting the arts within the community. About 15,000 people, includ-ing some 4,000 school children, enjoy their performances each year.

Each year the festival lights the evening sky with enchanting magic. Trumpeting angels, Santa and his reindeer, wispy trees and forest-land wonders are created by volunteers who place over one million lights throughout the 15-acre campground.

Standing paramount is Cascade Splendor, a mountain scene that is 247 feet long and includes over 60,000 individual lights.

Just as the Cascade Mountains look over the beautiful state of Washington, Cascade Splendor looks over the vast wonderland at Warm Beach.

Part of that wonderland includes lodging opportunities within themed cabins that, as one lodger put it, provide “a good destina-tion for the whole family to have a chance to build a Christmas memory.”

Deer Mountain Lodge holds the warm rustic décor of an old-fashioned mountain

The center, which hosts interac-tive displays honoring the legacy of

the Tulalip people, will feature a two-day ba-zaar as part of its annual holiday celebration.

For the cost of admission, the community can explore the gallery, take part in children’s craft activities and shop for unique items at the bazaar where tribal vendors will sell arts and crafts, specialty goods, drums, cedar baskets and clothing, all ideal for holiday gift giving.

Additional gift items will also be available at Hibulb’s gift store which carries woolen items from Pendleton, unique shoes and rain boots, beautiful scarves and a wealth of handmade jewelry and home goods from local artisans.

Gift items for the kids are also on hand and, for the book lovers in your life, several titles are available, including “Tulalip, From My Heart” by Harriette Shelton Dover.

person, this poignant autobiographical account of life on Tulalip Reservation � ies off the shelf year round.

The book also nicely correlates with the displays found throughout the cultural center.

Tulalip’s traditional territories, seasonal lifeways, the importance of cedar trees, the tribe’s seven value stories – all are featured components celebrating ancestry, family, tradi-tion, challenges and growth.

As part of the center’s tour, guests experience a Tulalip longhouse where drums beat in the background and recorded stories told by Tulalip’s gifted storytellers provide a historic perspective of the ideals and actions that have shaped Tulalip’s spiritual, political and everyday lifestyles.

Guests will also discover a rich heritage of craftsmanship behind the story poles, carv-ings and art-stenciled design throughout the building and embrace Tulalip Tribe’s military tradition through an exhibit entitled, “War-riors: We Remember.”

Additionally, archaeological � nds, historic

photographs, commemorative tributes and Coast Salish legends provide a sweeping portrait of Tulalip’s history and integrity. As does the center’s current special exhibit, “A Journey with Our Ancestors,” which expresses the importance of canoes within tribal history.

ngel Of The Winds Casino, the world’s friendliest casino, has added a � ve-story hotel, set to open mid-December, 2014. The more than

$27-million construction project will add more than 100,000 square feet to the casino and create an additional 50 jobs for the com-munity of Arlington.

“We are truly blessed to have an oppor-tunity to add a hotel to our facility, allowing us to provide an amenity our casino guests have been requesting for quite some time,” said Travis O’Neil, general manager of Angel Of The Winds Casino & Hotel. “As we continue to grow, we anticipate adding more amenities that will make Angel Of The Winds a destina-tion for not only the area, but the greater Paci� c Northwest.”

The new hotel at Angel Of The Winds will feature 125 guestrooms, including six two-bay suites with most over 800 sq. ft., that will be connected to the casino. It boasts the brand-new River Rock Smoke Shop, gift shop as well as a porte-cochere and valet station, which provides guests a distinct entrance into the hotel. All standard rooms boast signature photography from local artist Steven Ken-nedy, RainDance shower � xtures, polished chrome bathroom � xtures by Kohler, 42-inch LED TVs, custom-designed Simmons Beautyr-est mattresses, Keurig coffee makers, and iPod speaker docks with clock radios. Compli-mentary high-speed Internet and Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.

Angel Of The Winds is owned by the Stillaguamish Tribe, which opened the

casino in October 2004 on tribal land. The Tribe’s vision has always been to develop “The World’s Friendliest Casino” in the market.

“We built Angel Of The Winds Casino on our Tribe’s lands and the addition of a hotel gives us the opportunity to welcome old and new friends back to our home for just an evening, or a weekend adventure,” said Shawn Yanity, chairman of the Stillaguamish Tribe.

The hotel was designed by DreamCatch-er Hotels and constructed by Exxel Paci� c. Angel Of The Winds Casino is located just three minutes east of I-5 Exit 210 in Arlington, Wash. This is the third phase in the Angel Of The Winds Casino & Hotel expansion project. The � rst phase consisted of adding 400 slot machines and remodeling of Katie’s Kitchen, the signature restaurant named after tribal member and advocate Kathleen Goodridge Johnson. The second phase expanded the ca-sino to include table games, Keno and a poker room, as well as updates to the Watershed Restaurant & Lounge.

Christmas Tree Farm is the next best thing.Since 1990, Bill and Lila Brown have

been running this ultimate in tree farms. It features thousands of trees, both sheared and unsheared, in a delightful rural setting. Wandering through Farmer Brown’s is like taking a stroll through the woods only better because it has been designed for customer convenience.

One big difference is the extensive prop-erty features a road so families don’t have to stretch their legs too far with walking – unless they want to. Some people like to spot their tree from the comfort of the car. Others like to stroll through the trees and � nd the perfect specimen.

“Some people might want in and out in 20 or 30 minutes. Other people might want to stay two hours,” Bill Brown said. He has

taken great care to make sure people can stay as long, or as little, as they like when choosing their tree.

In fact, the Browns spent many years researching Christmas tree farms before they laid out and built their own.

Pets are welcome at Farmer Brown’s as long as they are on a leash and if the owners clean up after them. That means it can be an outing for the whole family.

After choosing and cutting or digging the tree of your choice, many families like to sit by the bon � re, listen to music or enjoy a snack.

“We’re going to give the proceeds from our hot dog sales this year to the American Cancer Association,” Brown said. Kettle corn, hot chocolate and cider are also available.

Farmer Brown’s features all of the most popular varieties of trees. There are Noble � r, Fraser � r, Grand � r, Douglas � r, Norway spruce and Colorado Blue spruce. Most tree farms charge by the foot or by the species

but at Farmer Brown’s pricing is related to the area where you cut or dig your tree.

This best-loved Christmas carol by Alfred Burt was originally written in 1954 to accompany a Christmas card. In 1960, Nat King Cole recorded the carol and The Muppets adopted the song for their 1987 TV special, “A Muppet Family Christmas.” This year, the words have been changed up – just a bit – in anticipation of Everett’s holiday shopping season.

From 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, Everett’s annual Wintertide Celebration will take place at Wetmore Theatre Plaza, 2710 Wetmore Ave.

At this old-time village festival, carolers will � ll the air with music while you warm your hands by the toasty bon-� re and enjoy free hot cocoa and cookies.

The much-anticipated tree lighting and the arrival of Santa on an Everett � re truck will also be part of the magi-cal evening.

Holiday music will again � ll the air on Dec. 6 and 7 as the Everett Chorale presents “The Sweet Sounds of Christ-mas with the Brass Re� ections Quintet.”

Diane Giese, a performer in the choir, is especially excited about this performance, which will feature John Rutter’s “Gloria,” a compilation that Everett Chorale last sang 12 years ago at Carnegie Hall.

“John Rutter directed us at our Carnegie Hall per-formance and he signed a copy of my music,” Giese said. “Twelve years later, I still have that copy and I still love his music.”

Everett Chorale’s performance will take place at

7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, at Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use circle template to cut 3-inch red and green cardstock circles. Cut photos into 2 1/2-inch circles. Attach photos slightly off-center to red or green circles.

Cut 3 1/2-inch white cardstock circles, and use shears to pink or scallop edges. Adhere photos and colored circles onto white cardstock circles, centered. Cut 4 1/2-inch tag shapes and punch hole freehand or using Cricut machine.

Attach layered photo off-center on tag. Attach ribbon through hole. Use glue stick to attach three self-adhesive gems to red or green circles.

INSTRUCTIONS:Fold fabric A in half with right sides together. Stitch all open sides leaving 2-inch opening at end. (Note: Seam allowances are 1/4 inch throughout.)Push fabric through opening, turning it right side out. Press piece. Repeat with fabric B.Run base stitch through center of both A and B. Pull on thread to cinch both pieces at center. Place piece B on top of A and run secure stitch to hold both pieces together.Cut remnant holiday fabric C to 2 inches by 5 inches. Fold in half with right sides together and sew along

long edge. Flip fabric so right side shows. Wrap around center of bow and stitch in place.

Lightning play and powerhouse faceoffs have led the Everett Silvertips to one hot season. The team’s shutout victory over the defending Western Hockey League champions, the Edmonton Oil Kings, is proof positive that tickets to a Silvertips game are bound to be a very popular Christmas gift this year.

Admittedly, there is one tough part about this particular Christmas gift: choosing which game to attend.

There are 17 home games for the

Silvertips following Christmas; including three against the Seattle Thunderbirds. The team has several away games, too, so you’ll have to decide which you’d rather do: stick close to XFINITY Arena at Everett or make a road trip.

Single game tickets range from $14 to $44. You also have package options to choose from and, just in time for Christmas, a four-game package includes a free hat and a 10-game package comes with a free jersey. something new to the tried-and-true repertoire. Here are three delicious ideas made with a surprise ingredient – pickled beets.

Yes, pickled beets. They are the perfect ruby-red color of the season and their tangy-sweetness complements so many other ingredients. Aunt Nellie’s makes it easy; just open the jar and get going with one or more of these unexpected seasonal sensations.

‘Unbeetable’ recipes for the holidays Mini Beet & Carrot Gift Loaves

Servings: 4 loaves (6 servings per loaf)

Chop beets into 1/4-inch pieces. Preheat oven to 325°F. Spray 4 mini loaf pans or disposable 5-inch-by-3-inch foil pans with nonstick cooking spray.

Combine � our, pie spice, baking powder, baking soda and salt in medium bowl; stir to mix well. Combine brown sugar and oil in large bowl; mix well. Stir in eggs. Gradually add � our mixture; mix well. Stir in beets, carrots and nuts just until combined. Spoon batter into pans.

Combine topping ingredients in small bowl; stir until crumbly. Divide evenly over batter.

Bake 35-40 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans to wire rack; cool completely.

To make glaze, stir together sugar and milk. Drizzle glaze over cooled loaves.

Store at room temperature up to 3 days. You can also freeze it, unglazed, up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature; then drizzle with glaze.

Note: It is not necessary to remove loaves from disposable foil pans to cool.

1 cup gin or vodka1/2 cup Aunt Nellie’s Pickled Beets liquid 1/4 cup orange liqueur2 tablespoons fresh lime juiceIceLime wedges (for garnish)Baby whole pickled beets (for garnish)

Combine gin or vodka, beet liquid, orange liqueur and fresh lime juice in pitcher. Stir to combine; add ice and stir again. Garnish with lime wedges and beets.
