What has been the highlight of 2013 for you?

As 2013 draws to a close let’s take time to relax, recharge our batteries and spend time with friends and family.Nelson is a fantastic place to take a holiday whether you’re a local or a visitor. Great walks, cycling and swim-ming are on our doorstep. Get out on the water and catch a fish, sail a boat or have a go at paddle board-ing at Tahunanui. Enjoy summer barbeques with the best of Nelson produce, whether it’s grown in your own garden or selected from a local market. This year’s Nelson City Council summer festi-val has an exciting and diverse lineup of events to inspire and entertain.

Most of the entertainment is free to attend. In early January choices are top class. Don’t miss international cricket at Saxton

Oval or the Jazz and Blues Festi-val. As you take time to enjoy our wonderful city over the Christmas break, it’s easy to see why we’re the second fastest growing region in New Zealand. Who wouldn’t want to call Nelson home? Keep safe around water, wear plenty of sunscreen and enjoy happy times with your children and grandchildren.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Meri Kirihimete me ngā mihi o te tau hou ki a koutou katoa.

Nelson’s 2013: a year of success It’s been a great 2013 for Nel-son, from a strong economy and low unemployment rate to success on the sports field and on stage. The city also has a new mayor, welcomed the largest ship to ever visit and watched some of our fellow citizens show their heroism. In July four local men dived into a freezing creek and res-cued two people from a sink-ing car. Their efforts showed Nelsonians at their best. While the driver of the car died in the accident, the efforts of these men saved two more, without question. On the sports field our Tasman Makos won its first ever cham-pionship, since amalgamat-ing in 2006. The Makos held on in a tight finish to beat the Hawkes Bay Magpies and seal the ITM Cup Championship. We also watched the Nelson Falcons take flight for the first time ever in the ASB Youth Football League.Nelson was also selected to host several Cricket World Cup games at Saxton Oval.We had success in the arts as well with numerous successful shows and performances but the highlight would have to

be local band Broods signing a massive recording contract with Capitol Records in the United States. Nelson’s economy has had a great year. In November the Weekly reported how it was booming on the back of strong growth in the primary sector, helping to create the lowest unemployment in the country. Our port recorded profits of $7.1 million and the biggest ship to ever arrive in Nelson, the Raroa sailed in for a $8 million repair job in October. In October Nelson’s popula-tion was revealed by the census to have grown more than any other region in the country, outside of Auckland. And our crime rate dropped 2.2 per cent.Nelson also elected a new may-or and five new councillors to lead our city.It wasn’t all roses though, in

April some of the heaviest rainfall in the history of New Zealand caused millions of dollars’ worth of damage and left hundreds homeless. Two of the biggest news sto-ries of the year have happened recently though. Nelson’s only indoor events centre was closed earlier this month, after it was found to be susceptible to an earthquake. And in late November the residents of Waimea Village fi-nally won their battle with the former owners Michael and Carolyn Wright. The residents bought the village, ending years of concern about rising costs. It was a story the Weekly covered extensively.Nelson Weekly itself is also cel-ebrating another massive year. So thanks to all our readers and advertisers for your support. We look forward to bringing you the news again in 2014.

New Year’s Eve at Nelson’s church steps.

There’s no better way to kick off the New Year than a cruisy visit to the Tahunanui Beach village green for the Arts and Crafts Fair. The fair is hosted by the Nelson North

Lions Club and has plenty of activities including a huge number of stalls from around the region. One of the organisers, John Blaauwbroek, says the day is plenty of fun for the family and is a relaxed at-

mosphere. Money raised from the event will go the Lions and the Rescue Heli-copter Trust. The fair starts from 9am and runs until 4pm.

A Stoke woman who is a self confessed loyal Richmond shopper has walked away with $5000 in cash after she won local competition Shop ‘n’ Win.Raewyn McDowell’s entry form, which she admits was filled out on a whim, was pulled out of 73,000 others on Wednesday December 18 after a record breaking number of customers embraced the contest. Customers at all participating businesses in Richmond were eligible to enter in to the competition, which is now in its sixth year thanks to its popularity and the support of local retailers. The competition was drawn by Richmond Police community constable Glyn Cunningham who phoned Raewyn with the good news. After hearing that she had won, Raewyn says it took a while to register. “When he started saying, did you shop at Richmond Mall, did you fill out a form? I honestly could not remember. Then I thought wait a minute yes I did.”Raewyn had more than the other entrants up against her in order to win the prize. After seeing a bracelet she liked the look of at Acquisitions in Richmond Mall, she left empty handed. “I didn’t buy it at first but then woke up the next night thinking about it, so I thought ‘bugger it – I’m going back to get it’.” Despite being a passionate Richmond shopper, one that “would never shop anywhere else”, it’s also a miracle that she even filled out the form once given the opportunity. “I am really impatient, a sort of ‘can’t be bothered waiting around’ person and normally forms end up scrunched up in the bottom of my bag. But the lady

at the counter handed me the form and a pen and told me to fill it out. I dropped it in the box, walked out of there and didn’t think another thing about it,” she says. She says it’s almost as though she was supposed to win, because the bracelet she bought is made out of agate, a stone that supposedly brings good fortune. Her winnings will go towards a great Christmas and of course she’ll spread the goodwill with her family. “It is funny how life unfolds. It’s been a bit of a horrible year. My son was flooded out of Arbor Lea in the Richmond flood. As a mum you immediately think of your kids so I don’t know.” It’s not just Raewyn who wins either, as the participating business, the Richmond Mall has scooped a $2000 prize and would like the money to go to the Richmond Mall Foundation, that provides grants to individuals and families where there is clear hardship, in the Nelson and Tasman regions. The team at Acquisitions fully supports the donation to and as a reward for their great effort in promoting and driving the competition, they’ve been given gift vouchers to spend as they wish.Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page is absolutely rapt at the number of entries that were received and says that is a direct result of the increase in foot traffic in the Richmond area. “To have nearly 75,000 entries, that is phenomenal. We couldn’t be more pleased at how well the competition has gone. It is a true reflection that Richmond is now the number one place to shop. We hope to reach 100,000 entries next year.”

A cast of international acts, Kiwi favourites and Nelson’s first pop wonder will take to the Riwaka Hotel stage this summer.Every year Riwaka Hotel has been the pre-mier destination for top musicians coming to perform in Nelson and this season is no different with five shows covering a range of genres. Things kick off on December 28 with Shapeshifter who will no doubt bring in the numbers for what is likely to be the most popular of the summer concerts. Shapeshifter’s live tour comes off the back of another successful year, taking home Best Group and Best Electronic Album at this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards for their fifth studio album Delta. Things take a more relaxed approach for the next act with “one man band” Xavier Rush weaving together a rich tapestry of blues, reggae, indigenous sounds and folk music. Xavier will perform on Monday December 30. He has produced seven stu-dio albums, two live albums and has re-ceived multiple ARIA nominations. Join-ing Xavier Rush is fellow blues travellers Little Bushman.Nelson duo Broods will kick off New Year’s Eve at Riwaka Hotel, opening for Minuit and dubstep pioneers Mt Eden. Broods’ debut single “Bridges” has earned them in-ternational praise with US magazine Bill-board asking whether they are “New Zea-land’s next pop wonder”, and record deals with Capitol in the US and Polydor in the UK back that up. The headlining act for New Year’s Eve is probably the most popu-

lar group you’ve never heard of. Mt Eden – the New Zealand-born and New York-based duo of Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner – have clocked up more than 100 million views on YouTube and will bring their dynamic blend of modern electronic soundscapes and classical orchestration to Riwaka. The fourth concert, on Jan 3, will be head-lined by Riwaka regulars Fat Freddy’s Drop. They will present their Blackbird Summer Detour following sold out tours in Australia, UK and throughout Europe. And concluding them all is arguably the biggest name of the lot – Guy Sebastian, who will headline his first ever tour of New Zealand. Riwaka will be one of six stops

for the man who shot to stardom in 2003 where he was voted the first ever Austral-ian Idol. His first single “Angels Brought Me Here” debuted at number one in New Zealand. Six albums later and Guy has received 17 ARIA award nominations and has had 11 top ten singles in Australia including re-cent platinum hit “Battle Scars”. He per-forms on January 4.

Wine and Food fest back to what it does bestFive years ago the Brightwater Wine and Food festival was one of the biggest events in the region, it was a massive day out for hundreds of people to enjoy great wine and food and listen to fantastic music.Well you’ll be happy to know it’s back. After missing 2013 and enduring a disappointing 2012 on the back of high ticket prices, organisers of the event, the Rotary Club of Richmond have gone back to what they know works.Ticket prices are back to $15, there will be dozens of stalls featuring local food and wine and the organisers are confident the festival will once again be

a huge success. The 2014 event in mid-February will be the tenth that the Rotary club has hosted with more than $230,000 being donated to community organisations in the nine previous festivals. This year money raised will be used to help fund the rescue helicopter as well as Rotary community service projects.Chairperson Pete Glue says the day will be huge. “Following much community support it has been decided to reinstate the event along the lines of its original beginnings nine years ago. The back to basics 2014 event promises to deliver a fantastic day

out including local food, local wines and beers and local entertainment.”The public will be encouraged to attend using the new cycle ways and will be utilizing the support of the Wanderers Rugby Club, the Brightwater Volunteer Fire Brigade, Brightwater Scouts and local schools.“So put a ring around Sunday February 16 and get ready for a great day out at the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival,” says Pete.If you would like to have a stall at the 2014 event or would like further information please contact Pete Glue on [email protected].

In this column I’d like to welcome all of the holiday makers to Nelson.I know you’re all here to relax and have a good time. To ensure that’s exactly what happens I’d implore you to please take care on our roads and be careful with the amount of alcohol you drink. Please be aware that a large number of our public places - beaches, parks and urban areas - are liquor ban areas. If you’re not sure, you can get the details from the Nelson and Tasman Council websites. However, it’s safe to assume that you can’t walk around any town drinking alcohol. We take a very tough line on this as we know it is often linked to other offending and victimisaton. Over the summer period my staff are regularly involved in search and rescue operations. We have lots of people heading to the hills for a tramp and huge numbers getting out on the water. If you’re getting involved in any sort of outdoor activities there are some pretty simple precautions we’d like you to take.Firstly, trampers can hire a locator beacon very cheaply. If something unexpected happens help can be at hand in a very short time and if you’re lost it’s going to make our job of finding you a whole lot easier. If you’re going out in a boat, please make sure there is a lifejacket for every person, and for goodness sake wear them.Make sure you’ve checked the weather, have enough fuel and have some means of communication should you run into difficulty.Nelson’s a great place for a holiday and by using a bit of common sense you’ll hopefully go away with a bunch of happy memories.

If you are a keen swimmer or just want to hang out by the water this summer then the Nelson-Tasman region is the perfect place to be with stunning beaches, rivers and lakes all just a short drive of the main centres.Tahunanui Beach's proximity to Nelson makes it the most popular beach in the re-gion but Rabbit Island and Kaiteriteri and the golden-sanded bays in the Abel Tas-man National Park give the sea swimmers and beach bunnies plenty of options.

If rivers and lakes are more your thing then there's swimming holes in the Aniseed Valley and Lee Valley while Lake Rotoiti near St Arnaud is only an hour's journey from Richmond. The Maitai River is also a big attraction although the Nelson City Council has warned swimmers to stay out of the river until further notice because of high levels of toxic blue green algae in the river "We have so many great beaches and riv-ers," agrees Nelson Surf Life Saving Club

captain Ed Steenbergen who spends a big part of his summer at Tahunanui Beach. "Rabbit Island is really good and safe and Kaiteriteri is a classic beach. "Cable Bay is nice too especially at low tide when there's a sandy spot at the northern end. There are some really nice holes in the Maitai and Aniseed Valley too - why would you want to leave Nelson for the holidays?"Ed says one of the big attractions of the main beaches is they're relative safety. Rab-bit Island is especially user-friendly with-

out any rips or sandbars while the enclosed geography of Tasman Bay shelters most beaches from big ocean swells.

Some swimming tips:• Children need to be supervised at arm's length around water.• Check the water before you dive in• Always swim with a buddy• If you can't swim, don't get out of your depth• Keep a close eye on the weather.

A rider on the section of the Tasman Great Taste Cycle trail that winds along the shores of the Waimea Estuary. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Don’t be surprised if you see hundreds of holiday makers getting on their bikes around the Nelson-Tasman region this summer. The completed sections of the Tasman Great Taste Trail, which is part of the New Zealand Cycle Trails project, are already proving to be a big attraction for local cyclists. But now that the link from Nelson and Richmond to Mapua via Rabbit Island has reached Kaiteriteri, the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust believes the trail “has reached a tipping point”. Trustee and marketing spokesperson Paul Jennings says reaching Kaiteriteri was critical because it is on the doorstep of the Abel Tasman National Park which is one of the Nelson-Tasman region’s biggest tourist destinations. Now that the cycle trail offers an exciting alternative link into the Abel Tasman, it should attract higher numbers of international tourists.“People will bike from Nelson Airport to Kaiteriteri and then take a water taxi into Abel Tasman to do some walking. It will be a four or five day package that’s viable for international tourists.”Paul says there had been a lot of pressure to get to Kaiteriteri by Christmas because that’s when international tourism agencies start preparing itineraries for the 2014-2015 season. He says the Tasman District Council, contractors and volunteers did a great job to meet that critical deadline. “We are getting lots of local riders using it and the message to domestic tourists will be bring your bikes when you come to Nelson. But the international market is part of a much bigger machine and we really needed the trail to get

to Kaiteriteri by Christmas.”Mapua Ferry operator Andrew Schwass is also convinced the trail will take off now it has reached Kaiteriteri. “At the moment we are getting mostly locals out riding and I don’t expect the tourists to come until they can reach at least Kaiteriteri. It will be even better when the trail is finished and then it will become a real destination for tourists.’However, Paul says there is still a short on road section around Turner’s Bluff roadworks area near Kaiteriteri so riders needed to “take care”. “Road signs in the area alert drivers to cyclists presence and a reduced speed limit is in place however this is a busy section of road and care should be taken, especially at peak times and with children.”Paul says they are still working on parts of the section from Mapua to Motueka but it is all rideable and signposted. The section from Nelson to Mapua and Wakefield is complete except Edwards Street at Wakefield.Paul says extending the trail from Wakefield through to Kohatu and Tapawera will be the next goal. It will also be a key part of the project because riding through the disused Spooner’s Tunnel will appeal to a lot of cyclists. Once complete, the trail will form a 175 kilometre loop from Nelson to Richmond, Mapua, Kaiteriteri, Motueka, Riwaka, Kohatu and Wakefield. It will offer the riders the best of the Nelson-Tasman region’s views, food, wine, beer, sea and mountains. For a map of the trail and updates on construction see heartofbiking.org.nz

Festival a feast of jazz and bluesLabelled as "a summer feast of jazz and blues," at 23 years old, the Woollaston Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival is truly iconic to Nelson says festival director Liam Ryan. The popular festival launches on Wednesday January 1 with the a public concert in Fairfield Park and is the start of a wide ranging programme of events that will feature music in parks, bars, city streets and formal concert venues. “We have a great line-up of talent-ed musicians this year – the pro-gramme is looking rich.”With a Woollaston Estates Cellar concert featuring blues maestro Midge Marsden. Free street and venue performanc-es daily and the return of concerts to the Nelson School of Music, the festival is a big event with a big outreach says Liam. “The big thing about this event is the commu-nity involvement. That is what is

unique about it. There are commu-nity concerts and high end con-certs, I would say the programme is getting deeper.”Across the five day festival Liam expects around 25,000 people to attend at least one event and says the event is well “book ended” by the opening Fairfield Park perfor-mances and the finale event, Jazz & Blues in Washbourn Gardens.“It’s the perfect way to kick things off and to end things, we’ll have the usual face painters, it’s a beautiful environment. One of the things we often say as organisers is the festi-val is all about beautiful music in beautiful places.Washbourn will have a real party vibe, as the sun goes down over Washbourn Park, these amazing players will be going off.”For tickets or the full line up visit www.nelsonjazzfest.co.nz, or visit www.ticketdirect.co.nz.

One of the most popular events on the Nelson re-gion's summer festival programme is the outdoor movies that feature a unique combination of a friendly picnic atmosphere and some of the silver screen's classics. This year's Summer Movies Al Fresco has another top line-up screening at some of the Nelson-Tas-man region's most picturesque parks and venues. And Tasman District Council community rec-reation adviser Paul McConachie says that's what makes the outdoor movies so special."I think it's the settings that make it so popular," Paul says. "Places like Washbourn Gardens and Lake Rotoiti and Isel Park are idyllic."People seem to really enjoy having a picnic with their friends and watching the old movies too. "The movies this year include Darby O'Gill and the Little People, Hans Christian, Heidi, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Westside Story and the Bond (James Bond) classic Dr No. Paul says Movies Al Fresco are also affordable family entertainment with admission for adults only costing $2 and children $1. Movies Al Fresco is funded by the Nelson City and Tasman District councils and Paul says they have made a point of taking the movies all around the region. Although most of the screenings will be at Fairfield Park and Isel Park in Nelson and

Washbourn Gardens in Richmond, there will also be movies at the Takaka Village Green, Decks Re-serve in Motueka, Lake Rotoiti, Moutere, Wake-field and Tahunanui. The first outdoor movie is on January 2 at Tahuna Beach Holiday Park with the movie Heidi. For a full schedule visit www.nelsonfestivals.co.nz.Movie Al Fresco are BYO and run from 9pm to 11pm with movies starting at dusk. Movies will not be screened if it is raining. If the weather is doubtful text "is it on?" to 021 776 623 after 7:30pm.

A BSA Rocket 3 and Manx Norton raced at the Isle of Man earlier this year will be just some of the motorbikes on display at the Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Show at the Stoke Memorial Hall on January 4 and 5.Club president Peter Wood says the show will feature around 80 bikes, all over 25 years old, owned by members. Although the show is all about classic and vintage motorcycles Peter says it will appeal to anyone who is interested in machines and history.“It’s interesting just to see the changes in technology. I’ll be taking a 1951 BSA B32 trials bike - they used to ride them to the events and then take off the lights and a few other parts and race and then put them back together and ride home again.”Peter says the show always features a wide range of motorcycles including the classic British bikes from Norton, Triumph, BSA, AJS and Matchless as well as Ducati, BMW, and Motoguzzi from Europe and American Indians and Harley-Davidsons. There will also be classic Japanese Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasakis and Suzukis.

Club member Doug Donaldson, who is a British bike fan, says he always enjoys taking bikes to the show because “it’s a chance to meet like-minded people”. But like Peter, he says the show has a wider appeal because “the innovation and design shown in the old bikes is of interest to everyone”.The show will also feature a swap-meet

from 9am to midday on Sunday for anyone who wishes to sell motorcycle related material including bikes, clothing, books and parts. The show will be open on Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Admission is $5 for adults with children having free entry.

If you haven’t already noticed, Jays has had a bit of a makeover, and now they can give you a makeover too. Owners Karen and Kate have renamed the store Jays & Ko and created a unique boutique, expanding on the well known name Jays has around town for fabulous clothing and creating a one stop shop for all of your fashion fixes. From womenswear, menswear, gorgeous giftware, accessories and now makeup, Jays & Ko is now the perfect little bou-tique department store. Kate came on board with the busi-ness just a few months ago and the duo have well and truly hit the ground running. They still have the high end designer clothing in store, but they’ve expanded their range and done so by introducing small collections that comple-ment the atmosphere already in store. Part of the transfor-mation has included a brand new, exclusive makeup line that trained makeup art-ist Kate has created. “We knew we wanted to cre-ate a makeup brand and so we decided to really play on the name. Jays & Ko is the perfect combination of Jays fashion, and Ko makeup products.” Kate has teamed up with a manufacturer to create the Ko line and as an industry expert says she knew exactly what she and local women wanted. “I put a lot of thought into what makes a fantastic product, and the results are really amazing. The products are all natural with

no paraben. We’ve had fantastic feedback on the range.” You’ll find a full makeup bar at the Ko coun-ter in store. From mineral foundation, gel eyeliner, blushes, bronzers and more, alongside the products Kate creates in house. She’s introduced a ‘Tailored to You’ range which means she can colour match your foundation to your skin and get the colour precisely

right, just for you. Matte, dewy or anti aging, she can mix any formula to suit any skin type or sensitivity. The same goes for lipsticks too – Kate can even create any col-our to match a pair of heels, handbag or colour in a dress. The Ko counter offers les-sons and makeover services too, from brows, lash tinting, to full makeup application. “Our whole vision is to be a boutique department store, offer small amounts of every-thing. From high end cloth-

ing to luxury giftware. Our customers are incredibly loyal and now we are able to offer them more. They can come in, get made up for the night, pick a new dress and accessories. It’s a complete experience.” Pop into Jays & Ko and take a look around, check out what the ladies have done to give the store a makeo-ver and book in one for yourself. You’ll receive the Ko product used during your makeover for free.

Love your location,

but tired of your house?

One of the best things about be-ing on holiday is sitting around at the end of an exhausting day fish-ing, playing golf or lying on the beach and enjoying a nice, hard-earned cold beer with friends and family. And when it comes to enjoying beer, there's no better place to be than Nelson-Tasman which is the undisputed beer capital of New Zealand. Not only is it the only region in the country where hops are grown commercially, with 17 farms producing around 700 tonnes of beer's key ingredient each year, it also boasts a total of 12 craft brewers."Beer is part of the fabric of our region," says the chief executive of Nelson-based New Zealand Hops, former Australian brewer Doug Donelan. "We are the only region to grow hops and there are families like the Dodsons who have been

brewing beer here for genera-tions."The Dodson dynasty that Doug is referring to started when Jo-seph Dodson arrived in Nelson in 1854 and started brewing beer with Hooper and Co. That dy-nasty continues today with fifth generation brewer John Duncan and his sons Matt and Callum crafting fine beers at Founders Brewery.Doug says Terry McCashin has also played a key role in estab-lishing Nelson as the country's beer brewing capital. McCashin's Brewery in Stoke is widely cred-ited with initiating the craft brew-ing revolution in New Zealand in the early 1980s and "has been a breeding ground for a lot of very good brewers through the years". Nelson brewing families like the Duncans and McCashins have also been joined by some talented imports and Doug says they have

increased the diversity of the re-gion's beer."Nelson is a nice place to live so we have had a lot of people come here to brew beer. People like Martin Townshend from the UK and Tim Matranga from Califor-nia and they have all added to the diversity of the region's beer because it reflects their back-grounds and cultures and their preferences."Doug believes the number, quality and enthusiasm of the brewers has generated a real passion for beer among Nel-sonians. "It's like a shared interest. When you come to Nelson you are with people who are passionate about beer and of course we have the best beer drinking weather in the coun-try too."Doug isn't the only one to rate Nelson's craft beer highly. Last

year's 16th edition of the travel-ler's bible The Lonely Planet New Zealand identified the region's craft beer trail as one of the coun-try's 12 new favourite recommen-dations.But don't take Doug and Lonely Planet's word for it, go and try some of the region's great beers yourself.Nelson beers can be found at

speciality bars including the Free House, Bel-Aire Tavern, Harry's Bar, Moutere Inn, McCashins Brewery, Mussel Inn Cafe, Rhythm and Brown and the Sprig & Fern. Beer trail tours are also available with Bay Tours and the Gentle Cycling Company. For more information on Nelson breweries see craftbrewingcapi tal.co.nz

The dates have been set for the largest local fish-ing competition of the season – and with entries now open it’s shaping up to be a whopper – with organisers expecting a great turnout to the event. This January 17, 18 and 19 marks the annual Motueka RSA Fishing Club & McCashin’s Brew-ery Fishing competition and with huge support from local individuals and businesses, the event is going to be bigger and better than ever says organiser Bruce Reid. “We are really focussed on making this a regular annual community event. It is very much family-based. The competition is open to anyone and everyone, children included. It’s aimed at pulling together the local fishing community, from the most seasoned of fisherman to anyone who enjoys a casual fish. You don’t need to have a boat to en-ter as anything goes, from fishing off the wharf or a beach, to heading out into the bay in your dinghy.Kids in particular are encouraged to enter as their entry fee is just $5 and spotties, herrings, kahawai and even snapper - which can all be caught from land based fishing - are eligible for entry. There are heaps of prizes up for grabs and the aim is that no child will leave the contest empty handed. Any kids at the prize giving can also enter the fishing hat competition. These must be their own homemade creation without assistance from anyone else including

parents or other adults or siblings. It’s not just about fun for the kids though, with fantastic prizes for adult categories. Prizes will be allocated from first to fifth with average weight in all sections. Snapper is the ‘big one’ and the heaviest snap-per (gilled and gutted) over 9kg, will win a huge cash prize of $2000. The heaviest fish in each of

the seven categories will also win cash or vouchers to the value of $500 and the average weight snapper will take home $400. The weigh in and prize giving will be held at the Motueka RSA car park which proved to be a great venue for the oc-casion last year. Entrants may fish wherever they like providing they reach the weigh in no later than 3pm on Sunday January 19. Organis-ers are also requiring that no entrant uses a long line or set net or even carries them on their boat. And the usual amateur fishing regulations apply too. It’s not all about bringing home the biggest fish either, you can also enter

the ‘best catch and release’ competition too. If you catch a great fish but want to put it back, take a photo with it alongside something to compare it with, prove the dimensions and make sure you bring along a witness who can prove and vouch for you that it was caught on the day for the comp. It’s the biggest cricket game ever to be played in Nelson, and there’s certainly a strong argument to suggest it’s the biggest sporting game ever, across all codes, to be played here. Either way, the interest in the BlackCaps versus West Indies One Day International on January 4 has been so strong it is nearly sold out – just a matter of weeks after tick-ets went on sale via Ticketek’s website. The significance of this game hasn’t been lost on Nelson Cricket Association chair-man David Leonard. “This is huge. It’s the beginning of a new era for Nelson Cricket,” he says. “We’ve had international teams to Nelson in the past but that was many years ago and things have certainly changed in the professional era. But to have our national team is huge.”And that final point gives huge weight to the argument that this is Nelson’s biggest ever sporting event. For all of the Super Rugby, first class domestic cricket, ANZ Championship netball, NBL basketball and Rugby World Cup matches, never has a New Zealand national team of this mag-nitude played here. “This is New Zealand’s second biggest sport after rugby and it’s very rare that we get a national team play-ing in our city. You look at the upcoming Cricket World Cup and we’ve got three games, but for us to go to our own ground and support our national team is massive. There’s a lot of things happening in our re-gion at this time of the year, but I think the cricket should certainly be at the top of the list.”Match manager Neville Male believes the significance this fixture will have on the region is huge, with millions set to tune in across the globe to watch the game on

television. Speaking at Saxton Oval a week before the match, he points to where tel-evision cameras will be situated and says the stunning landscape our region offers is sure to be on show with the mountains perched in the backdrop of Saxton Oval. “This without a doubt, as much as we’ve had Super 15 games, this is the most im-portant sport occasion we’ve ever had in Nelson and that’s significant in its own right,” says Neville. “We’re talking about

5500 people attending and New Zealand Cricket are certainly confident that this will sell out. Everything is looking pretty good.”Nelson has been granted three games for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015, but with international accreditation, it’s hoped Saxton can host an international game at least once a season. New Zealand is currently ranked eighth on the ICC World Rankings, one spot below

West Indies. The team boasts a number of international superstars including bats-men Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor.Allrounder Dwayne Bravo, half-brother of batsman Darren Bravo, will captain the West Indies squad which is without the ex-plosive Chris Gayle and Kieran Pollard. The BlackCaps versus West Indies is the fourth of a five match series and begins on Saturday January 4 from 11am at Saxton Oval.

Nick Fowler hasn’t been back on the track long but he’s already being tipped as a favourite for the New Zea-land Home Loans South Island Su-perstock Championship. The 5n driver, racing in a new car this year, won this same event in Christchurch last year. With more drivers focussing on the New Zea-land Championship in Napier a week

later, the chances of a Nelson winner are certainly high. The South Island Championship is one of Nelson Speedway’s marquee events for the 2013-14 calendar. It will be held on December 28 with drivers competing over three heats to decide the winner. The superstocks are always a crowd favourite with speed and aggression often resulting

Nelson drivers Nick Fowler and Craig Boote will be two of the favourites for the upcoming New Zealand Home Loans South Island Superstock Championship which is being held at the Tahuna Holiday Park Speedway on December 28. in plenty of carnage and action.Craig Boote and current 2nz Dale McKenzie will also be strong contenders to take the title, but according to class rep Eric Peterson, the decision to hold the event just days before the national championship has resulted in a low number of entries with some not willing to risk their car ahead of the country’s premier event just days later. “There are some that aren’t rac-ing and that’s quite a shame really because the nationals are on the 3rd and 4th of January and they’ll be off on December 30,” Eric explains. “Last weekend was the North Island Champi-onship so they’ll have a fortnight which is a bit unfair on the South Island guys but that’s just the way it goes.”Eighteen drivers have already committed to the cause, however, with just four of those being out of town drivers. Jason Smith, who turned up in a new car two weeks ago, should be one of the top contenders from Christchurch although Mal-

colm Ngatai has yet to submit an entry form.Already Nelson drivers Dale Ewers and Blair Cunningham have decided not to put their name forward for the South Island Champion-ship, but there are still plenty of other strong challengers including Brent Nicholls, Ian Clay-worth, Shane Harwood, Jared Grey, Ricky Boul-ton and young Alex Bright. Eric predicts Nick and Craig would be the front runners at this stage to do the business on their home track. “Nick has had some problems because it was the first time his car has been out since it blew a motor, but those two boys are on a par and then the likes of Dale McKenzie who is doing exceptionally well.”Racing begins at 7pm on December 28. Prices are $15 for an adult, $10 for a pensioner or member, $7 for a child, while an under five year old is free. There is also a family package of $30 for two adults and three children. Tickets are bought at the gate on the night.

In the height of summer the last thing on people’s minds is generally rugby. But with the Crusaders host-ing the Highlanders in Motueka on February 4, it’s already the talk of the town. The most successful team in Super Rugby history will be bringing all their superstars and will hope to get one over their southern rivals who are currently rebuilding after losing a string of experienced talent in the offseason.More than 1000 tickets had already sold within the first week of sales, and Tasman Rugby Union chair-man Les Edwards says confirming the fixture was great for the region, and Motueka in particular who last held a pre-season game in 2010. “In terms of having the Crusaders in town this is just hugely exciting,” he says. “When they were here in 2008 they attracted 10,000 people and in 2010 they attracted 8000 so with this being a long weekend we expect a similar sort of crowd which is fantas-

tic for rugby in the region and for the general community.”Sports Park Motueka won the host-ing rights, beating a bid from the Marlborough District Council who hoped to bring the game to Lansdowne Park, and Les believes it was the perfect way to build on from a successful year in Tasman rugby, with the Makos winning the ITM Cup Championship. “They certainly got everyone’s attention and there will be a lot of kids out there that are very excited about rugby, and having the Crusaders in town will just add to that. Given that it’s JAB and senior registration time, it should have terrific benefits in getting people playing the game.”Four current Tasman Makos could line up for the clash, with prop Tim Perry and centre Ki-eran Fonotia in the Crusad-ers and Joe Wheeler and Shane Christie in the Highlanders. Halfback Mitchell Drummond,

2012’s Nelson College first XV cap-tain, could also feature for the Cru-saders while there are plenty of other players with Nelson connections in-cluding former Mako Jordan Taufua, Golden Bay’s Wyatt Crockett, Mo-tueka’s Owen Franks and the Nelson born Ryan Crotty.Tickets are selling for as little as $15 and are available from Nelson School of Music, Theatre Royal, Nelson i-Site, New World Nelson, Richmond Mall, Hampden Hotel Murchison or online at www.makos.co.nz or phone

There are one or two changes to this year's Woollaston Es-tates Tineli Tour de Vineyards cycle race including a new-look final stage around Hill Street and as stage around the Moutere circuit. But one thing hasn't changed in the five day tour around the Tasman district which starts on December 31 and that's the significance of the fourth stage that finishes at the summit of the Takaka Hill. In the past the tour has been won and lost on the 115 kilometre stage that takes riders through Wakefield, Eighty-eight Valley, Raey Saddle, Tapawera and Riwaka before ascending the 791 metre Takaka Hill. And the tour's first female director Christine van Hoppe says this year's NBS-sponsored fourth stage is likely to again be the key to winning the tour.

"It's the tour's Queen stage and it so often decides the final result.," she says."It's a big climb and you can either gain or lose so much time on it."Christine says there are a number of contenders for the Takaka Hill stage including one of the Tasman district's top riders George Bennett. The European-based profes-sional rider may be using the tour as training to prepare for the upcoming seasons in the northern hemisphere but he will still be hard to catch. George, who will be riding alongside big names like Peter Sagan and Ivan Basso in the Italian team Cannondale this season, is a specialist climber and may just have the edge on his rivals including Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston and promising young Nelson rider Grayson Napier.

Hayden, who won the silver medal in the men's 4000 metre individual pursuit and the bronze medal in the men's 4000 metre team pursuit at Beijing in 2008, won the Tour de Vineyards in 2006 and 2010 while Grayson won the King of the Mountain jersey in the Tour of South-land. Veteran Robin Reid is also a strong climber and is in good shape as he pre-pares for the ironman-distance Chal-

lenge Wanaka race on January 18.Christine expects Jo Kiesanowski to dominate the women's race along with Nelson's Jeannie Kuhajek, Karen Fulton and Robin's partner and top ranked international ironwoman Britta Martin.. Two young riders from Nelson, Caitlin Hol-mes and Olivia Miller, will also be in a team sponsored by Olivia's father's company Tim Miller Plumbing. But there will still be plenty of opportunity for riders to make a decisive move before they climb the Takaka Hill with the Nelson Bays Motor Group first stage giving the time trial specialists a chance to make a statement on the 10 kilometre Mt Heslington circuit near Brightwater. The time trial will be followed by the 128 kilometre Wool-laston Estates/Tineli stage two around the Moutere cir-cuit on January 1 and the Richard Woodhouse Chartered Accountants Neudorf Hill circuit on January 2. The final stage will be around the new Hill Street circuit on January 4 which has been changed to avoid the busy Queen Street-Hill Street corner. All stage presentations will take place in the finish area immediately at the completion of the fi-nal stage with overall prize presentation at The Stables in Croucher Street from 3pm.For race start times and maps see tasmanwheelers.co.nz
