Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to everyone! Wow, 2018 already, how did 2017 go by so fast. I’m looking forward to another year of Porsche driving and activities with the Club (as well as getting past this wonderful weather we are currently experiencing). It’s certainly hard to think of bringing out the Porsche and driving with the top off in this weather!

First of all I’d like to thank the outgoing Board members Hussein Dostmohamed (VP), Linda Hogue (Treasurer), and John Borody (Past Pres) for all their hard work and dedication to the club. We hope to continue to see you at meetings and events in 2018. I’d also like to thank David Breed for the 2 years as President, and now as Past President, as well as George Derwin for remaining on the Board for another year as Secretary. Thank you as well to our new Board members Dennis Duncan (VP) and John Sobczak(Treasurer) and our appointed chairs Andreas Kottschoth (Webmaster and PCA award winner), Dallas Ewen (Newsletter Editor and PCA award winner), Malcolm Hinds (Membership), and Lloyd Richardson (Librarian). I’d also like to thank Porsche Centre of Winnipeg and Braeden Mueller for his continued support to the Club. As President I’m looking forward to working with such a talented and dedicated group of people in 2018!

When I first joined the Club my motivation was to learn about my car from others who had similar vintage Porsches. I did not know much about the car and wanted to learn from others how to fix things and get suggestions as to where to get maintenance, repairs, etc. done. What became apparent almost immediately after attending my first meeting, was how open and friendly the members were and how much I enjoyed their company, knowledge and assistance regarding all things Porsche. This is why I remain involved as well as encourage others to be actively involved with the Club.

As a Board we will continue to strive to provide a helpful and fun experience for all our members in 2018. To do so we will also need the involvement and assistance of everyone in the Club. Please provide any suggestions for ways in which we can improve the Club and your participation in the Club to any of the Board or Appointed Chairs.

New Year's Resolutions

1. Lose 10

It's funny, the obsession that many motoring enthusiasts have with losing weight. Not their own, mind you – their car's. I am guilty

of this too. I love carbon fibre, titanium and other exotic lightweight materials with a passion. I've bought carbon fibre stuff for my cars and motorcycles. But the irony is, that for all the time and money we spend obsessing over weight loss on our cars and bikes, we almost never think that we can reduce sprung weight – FOR FREE – by just losing a few pounds ourselves! It's even worse in the world of high-performance motorcycles where hundreds of dollars are spent to lose infinitesimal amounts of weight. The rider is the single heaviest component of a motorcycle, and weight reduction for the rider can be done without buying a single molecule of carbon fibre or titanium. So my resolution this year is to lose a few pounds off my own unsprung weight. We'll see how that goes.

2. Get a Service on the 911

Looking back over the columns I've produced over the past year, more than one have wittered on about the importance of service. In fact, I'd booked a major service for the 911 to have occurred on November 8. Unfortunately the snow arrived permanently just before that date and I had to postpone the service until Spring rather than risk driving through a foot of snow to get to the workshop. So first thing this Spring (I promise!) the 911 will be in at Eurocars for the planned service.

3. Do more Porsche-ing

Our club organizes an incredible number of events over the driving season and I manage to get to a few every year. But next year I'm going to try and make a real push to get out whenever I can, not only because the events are great fun, and a reason to drive the car, but also because they provide fodder for newsletter content as well. Nothing beats taking pictures of members' gorgeous cars and then having Ray print them beautifully in our newsletter!

Of course, I also reiterate my invitation to you, the members of the club, to contribute to our newsletter and website content. It doesn't have to take much effort at all, either. We'd love to hear about how you came to buy your current Porsche (or past ones!) or how you first came to be a Porsche enthusiast. Have you taken a trip in your car, or visited a Porsche-related destination that you think other members might find interesting? Have you attempted a repair on your car (successful or not) that might be relevant to others? Have you just taken some amazing pictures of your Porsche in a beautiful setting that you'd like to see in print? If so please let me know – [email protected]. I’d love to hear from you!

Holiday Celebrationat the Manitoba Club

On Saturday, December 2, 2017, the Red River Region Porsche Club held its annual Holiday Celebration dinner at the Manitoba Club, 194 Broadway. One cannot imagine a better setting for an elegant evening, with stately wood paneling and beautiful stained glass windows. And to top off the winter spirit, the entire place decked out in a Dickensian holiday style. Our event was sponsored by Paz and Lisa Fernando.

A huge thanks to our long-term sponsor and donor, the Porsche Centre of Winnipeg. Our club enjoys a special relationship with the Porsche Centre, and they are very appreciative of the patronage of our members. Braeden Mueller, General Manager at Porsche Centre Winnipeg, brought his entire staff to the event.

Braeden Mueller, the General Manager at Porsche Centre Winnipeg, donated our grand prize, a two day Porsche driving experience at Camp4 in Mecaglisse, Québec. And if this was not enough, at the start of the dinner, Braeden announced that he was also throwing in business class airfare, eliciting a gasp from the members in attendance. We are indeed lucky to have such support.

We sold tickets for the Camp4 prize at a cost of $40 for one ticket or three tickets for $100. We had a lineup of people clamouring to buy tickets. The winner of the Camp4 draw prize was John Sobczak, who is the incoming Treasurer for RRR PCA for 2018. Our ticket sales raised $3,400, to be donated to Willow Place Inc., Manitoba's largest women & children's emergency crisis shelter.

We also had great table prizes, which consisted of baskets of chocolates and Porsche books. The recipients of the baskets were randomly drawn from a deck of playing cards by our president, David Breed.

Following the dinner was a casino, where members tried their luck at various games of chance, enjoying various degrees of success, and having a great time being entertained by the enthusiasm and humour of the dealers.

We had a total of 76 people attend our Christmas dinner, which included a combination of members, Porsche Centre staff and partners. We had an exceptional time at our Christmas dinner and this was a nice celebration of the wonderful people we have with us. We thank the staff of Porsche Centre of Winnipeg for coming out to celebrate the season with us, and their generous contributions to our club for not only this event, but also throughout the year.

No doubt one of the most significant Club

events in 2017 was the return of Bruce Tait's 1972 911E from its restoration in Minnesota. The gladness we all felt for Bruce in the completion of his car's restoration was only surpassed by the joy Bruce experienced in his summer of driving. Sadly it all came to a crashing halt one day in mid-September, but let's start the story from the beginning…

Bruce is one of the Club's founding

members and his Porsche enthusiasm has deep roots. “Back when I was fifteen years old, I'd regularly walk down a back lane in the West End where I'd stop and stare at a red 356 coupe,” he recalls. Later on, Bruce spent time at his uncle's autobody shop, which specialized in European marques, including Porsche. Around 1980 or '81, Bruce began to notice a Signal Yellow 911E Targa parked on Corydon Avenue. “It didn't seem to move for about a year, then it was suddenly gone,” Bruce notes. “Then in 1984, I saw the same car in an auto compound on Higgins Avenue. The lot manager connected me with the owner of the car, who was sick of spending money on chasing an issue with the mechanical fuel injection, and he agreed to sell me the car.”

The Signal Yellow Targa sat in Bruce's garage, never turning a wheel under its own power. Then in the summer of 2013, the stars aligned for Bruce and he made contact with Aaron Hatz, owner of Flatsix Aircooled Porsche Repair and Restoration in Bloomington, Minnesota. Bruce and Aaron hit it off and soon came up with a plan to get Bruce's Targa back on the road. “I took the car down to Flatsix in May, 2014, and Aaron started work in 2015. The engine was completely rebuilt, the suspension gone through and renewed, and various pieces replated and powdercoated,” Bruce says. “As for the body, the original plan was for Aaron's painter to just touch up the original paint, but he got carried away in making it perfect and ended up doing a full respray in the original Signal Yellow.” The interior of the car was preserved and some extraneous wiring and aftermarket stereo equipment cleaned up.

11

Finally, in the summer of 2017, the car was

back in Winnipeg and ready to drive. And Bruce drove it! “I put on close to 4,000km in the summer. I drove it everywhere – out for ice cream, running errands, car shows – you name it.” Bruce reports that the car acquitted itself well as a driver, even winning “Best Import” at the Steinbach Mustang Show. Bruce was happy to share his enthusiasm with others, too – “I probably let close to 300 kids sit in the car this summer,” he says.

Then came the fateful day – September 13, 2017. Bruce was motoring up St. Mary's Road when a Chevy Cruse pulled out of a side street in front of him. In the blink of an eye the pristine Porsche was smashed. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries in the crash and Bruce is looking forward to getting the Targa repaired and back on the road. The dream is by no means dead, it's just been delayed, and Bruce knows it's only a matter of time before he's back behind the wheel of his Signal Yellow beauty. After all, he waited over 30 years to drive it for the first time, and Bruce is nothing if not a patient man.

Willow Place depends on donors, and our club’s fundraising is our way to let women and children, who come from situations of domestic violence, know that they are cared for and supported by our community. We unhesitatingly support Willow Place in its mission to provide critical services to help those persons affected by family violence.

The Red River Region Porsche Club in conjunction with the Porsche Centre of Winnipeg raised $3,400 in support of Willow Place, Manitoba's largest women and children's emergency crisis shelter.
