WHO AND WHAT IS THE OFFICE OF EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT AND WHAT DO THEY DO?Over the past several years, we have all witnessed death and de-
struction happening all around the country. The devastation of floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, air crashes and domestic terrorism are just a few of the many disasters that have affected communities across the country. These events would have been much worse had it not been for the quick actions taken by public safety departments, public works departments and elected officials. These departments are the core of emergency management. The fire department, police department, emer-gency medical services (EMS) and public works (DPW) are well trained and equipped to handle the daily activities needed to handle and protect the citizens of our community. Your emergency responders respond to police calls, fires and ambulance calls, while handling day-to-day opera-tions.The Office of Emergency Management is a federally mandated depart-
ment responsible for mitigation of hazards, planning for disasters and emergencies, response to and recovery from a disaster or emergency. We develop plans and procedures to coordinate all departments during a di-saster or emergency in conjunction with all borough departments and of-
ficials. The county and state monitor these plans which are assembled in a manual called “The Barrington Emergency Opera-tions Plan” along with plans and proce-dures to efficiently handle these events. We also hold annual table-top and real time drills with all emergency departments so we can practice implementation of our emergency operations plan and make any
necessary adjustments.Hope
fully you will never need us, but isn’t it good to know we are there?—Mike DePierri, Emergency Management

Bright LightsDEAN WILSON
TAKES HIS TALENTS TO ORAL ROBERTS
UNIVERSITYAfter completing a suc-
cessful two-year run at Brookdale Community College, Dean Wilson has accepted a scholarship offer to continue his baseball career at Oral Roberts Uni-versity. Dean will compete
for a middle infield posi-tion, while adjusting to college life far from home. Dean was a co-captain at Brookdale in 2013, and finished the season with a batting average of .423, leading the Nation in hits at the Division 3 level with 78. Those hits included 20 doubles, 2 triples and 40 RBI. Dean also showed off his base running skills, stealing 22 bases in 24 at-tempts. His fielding per-centage was an incredible .970!
Dean also received a scholarship offer from the University of Tennessee, as well as interest from Wag-ner University and Rowan University. Interestingly enough, he also had some contact with the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals. Playing at Oral Roberts will have Dean playing some stiff competi-tion, with games against Cal State Fullerton, Okla-homa, Texas, Wichita State, and Kansas.
Dean was a standout player for the Garnets of Haddon Heights, and developed his knowledge of fundamental baseball at Barrington Little League. He is proof that the sky is the limit with hard work
and commitment to aca-demics and sports.
ABBY MCHUGH DANCES HER WAY
TO SUCCESSDuring the weekend
of July 20 & 21, recent Haddon Heights gradu-ate Abby McHugh at-tended the North American Irish Dance Federation’s (NAIDF) National Champi-onship at Richard Stockton College where during the course of that weekend she received 3 first places and a 2nd place in group dances and became a National Championship in her age group of 16 to 18 years old!
Abby has been danc-ing since she was 5 1/2 years old and danced for her classmates practically every year while she was in the Barrington schools for St. Patrick’s Day. With this win, Abby has qualified to go to the World Champion-ships in Germany and Ire-land in the Spring of 2014. For this she will hopefully be successful in fundraising to help with the expense of this trip, which could be a once in a lifetime oppor-tunity that she has worked so hard for for the past 13 years!
Abby is a dancer and a teacher with The Emer-ald Isle Academy of Irish Dance under the direction of Kate O’Brien, who will be opening a studio this fall in Barrington. So if anyone is interested in Irish Dance please feel free to contact us for information.
Abby is attending Stockton and playing field hockey this fall and will be working real hard preparing to go dance against some of the best Irish dancers in the World in April 2014! Having the town cheer her on would be a wonderful thing! Abby will also be teaching Irish dance in Egg Harbor Twp. and Ventnor while she is at Stockton, and I am sure when she is home she will be helping and working out in the soon to come studio in Bar-rington.
Congrats and continued success Abby!!!
GIRLS SOFTBALLBGSL completed another
great season of softball. We would like to say thank you to all those who helped make a great one, from our numerous volunteers, coaches, sponsors and Public Works. Without all of you, we would not be able to provide our girls with an opportunity to learn the game of softball and most importantly have fun. Congrats to all our teams on your hard work and dedication.
Parents, we are also look-ing for new volunteers to step up. A lot of our Board members and coaches are made up of girls that will be no longer eligible to play next year and will no longer be helping. We need new parents to step up and get involved or our league could be in trouble. Whether it be a Board posi-tion, coach, kitchen help or equipment manager, we need a lot of people to help pull together a successful season. Please email [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions. Volunteering is an awarding adventure, especially when it comes to giving the girls a fun time. Thanks again and already
looking forward to 2014!!BGSL Board
