Happy Holidays
We are so glad that you are with us today! Our service
will be to praise and worship God and to encourage and uplift us to face another week. We will sing (Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16), pray (James 5:15-18), and partake of the Lord’s Supper to remember our Savior’s sacrifice on the cross (Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 11:23-26). We will also give back a portion of the monetary blessings that God has granted us so that we can carry out His work in our community (1 Cor. 16:2, 2 Cor. 9:7). We will also study a lesson from His Word that will hopefully be applicable to our daily lives, so that we can be equipped to handle the pressures of this world and reach those outside of
Christ (2 Tim. 2:15).

2016
For many, today is the most exciting day of the year. Americans have spent an estimated $465 BILLION dollars on Christmas gifts in anticipation of a memorable time of celebration with friends and loved ones. Children spend the entire year trying to be on their best behavior to avoid their name popping up on the dreaded naughty list, and adults see their monthly budget balloon in December just to bring yuletide glee to those around them. Today
is even more special because faithful Christians will get to enjoy the holiday in the presence of their church family as they assemble to worship. While most of the world will celebrate the birth of Jesus, we will celebrate his death, burial, and resurrection which give us hope of eternal life!
Leading up to December 25, we put up a variety of decorations including ornament-laden trees, flashing lights, and elaborate holiday stockings! We bake goodies, sing carols, and host holiday parties encouraging those close to us to wear tacky sweaters or Christmas pajamas! The enthusiasm leading up to Christmas is almost fanatical, but then at midnight it’s over. The day itself is almost anticlimactic, and then the whole world just moves on. All the promises of Christmas glee end in an unspectacular turning of the page on the calendar. While holidays are often a time of joy, we must admit they leave a little to be desired.
The promises of God are completely different – they will never disappoint! I love this beautiful passage of scripture from 2 Peter 1:2-4:
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that
pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly
great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world
through lust.”
The description of God’s promises in verse 3 is just as true as it is astonishing. While manmade visions of holiday cheer may fall short of expectations, what God has given through His Son will never leave us wanting more. We have been blessed with everything that pertains to life and godliness as well as eternal life when this short journey is over. The promises of God exceed what we can imagine, they are great, and they are precious. Both in this life and the next, God has provided us with gifts beyond our wildest dreams.
The joy of Christmas Day will end tonight, but one of the exceedingly great and precious things about life with God is it will never end. There will be no turning of the page, and we will not have to deal with some of the misery and suffering that accompany life on earth. What a day, glorious day, that will be!
