CHANCEIf a man is alive and healthy the main reason is CHANCE.
If he is suffering from any disease at a given time, the reasonagain is CHANCE. Whereas the genes that we inherit from
our parents are the ones that basically determine everything
in life including our capacity to live a healthy and happy lifeor the capacity to suffer and die, the environment in which welive plays a significant role as well. Every gene needs aconducive environment to penetrate and produce its effect
(penetrance).Man, like other animals, has an intuition, which guides
him accurately most of the time. In the present day world of
science, reasoning and logic, intuition is suppressed andintellect is developed. Most of us believe that we live or diebecause of science, doctors and medicines. For every ailment
from common cold to cancer, we rush to medicines and costlyinvestigations.
Interestingly, many common ailments are only transitoryand the body has an excellent repair process which correctsmost derangements and resets the machine for its
complicated task.This should not belittle the massive advances made in
the field of modern medicine to make life enjoyable and tocure diseases. We must admit that most microbial diseases
can be controlled now. Some childhood cancers, Hodgkinsdisease and its related cancers can be cured. Palliative
surgical procedures are now available for most diseasesincluding spare part surgery. Notwithstanding all that, onehas to admit that doctors cure rarely, comfort mostly butconsole always. A doctor today might laugh at a doctor ofAD 1897 and say that he was a quack and did not know most
of what we know today. A doctor in 2097 AD will certainly feelthat todays doctors (1997) are only quacks. The only truth in

Medicine for all times is that doctors always had and willalways have identical problems to deal with viz: disability,
fear of death and anxiety.Medicine is trying to make life enjoyable and useful as
long as we live. A good look at history tells us that the onlydisease we have been able to eradicate is smallpox. This was
done by preventive vaccination and not by any greatinventions in the filed of therapeutics or surgery. Even thoughmedicine claims to have done a lot in the latter two fields ofcurative therapy the fact still remains that doctors have only
been able to palliate and not cure. There are glaring instancesof doctor or drug induced diseases which form a sizeablesegment of the sick populace today.
A glaring example is the capacity of certain measures to
postpone the onset of certain ailments or prevent suddendeath in younger population. If, as a result, the life expectancygoes up, the population is exposed to degenerative diseases
of old age like (in the west) Alzheimers disease which takesa heavy toll of manpower and money to look after theseunfortunate cripples. In short, many times the attitudes inmodern medicine seem to be shortsighted.
If one looks at the present scenario objectively, one getsconvinced that nature has good reasons to do what it seemsto do. Let us, for example, look at plague, a deadly diseasewhich literally wiped out large segments of the population in
Europe during the 17th century. The black death of Londonand the near total annihilation of the population of Veniceduring that period are examples. Plague disappeared fromEurope since the 18th century. Doctors and medicines did
not have a role in its disappearance. Nature made it impossiblefor the black rat (Rattus rattus) to survive there because oflowered temperature. The rate population of Europe now is
the white rate (Rattus novigenous), the latter has no capacityto harbour the bacilli (Pasturella pestis) causing plague.

Story of AIDS is going on the same lines. The suddenexplosion of the AIDS bomb is only the tip of the iceberg. The
virus has been there in Central Africa for a long time confinedmainly to monkeys. A blood sample from a patient in one ofthe large British hospitals who died of a mysteriouspneumonia in 1959 was kept frozen for future analysis. This
sample has now shown antibodies against AIDS virus. Maybe AIDS will balance the world population for sometime anddisappear like plague did from Europe in the 17th century.
World population now stands at 5.7 billion, is supposed
to grow exponentially, doubling once in 40 years. If the presentbirth rate is kept up and death rate remains static, or falls asis hoped by politicians, the world population will double by2040 AD.
As it is the total food produced in the world can feed (withdifficulty) the present population if all of us have the easternfood habits. If all of us were to eat the western type of food
and the western calorie intake, the total food produced canonly feed about 3 billion mouths, leaving half the populationstarving. The photo synthetic energy from the sun has beenused up to its maximum capacity and there is not likelihood
of our increasing the present quantum of staple food (rice,wheat) produced in the world now. This leaves nature withonly one choice. Part of the population has to be decimatedfor the world to go on. In this context the AIDS epidemic
assumes great significance. As we go on fighting bacterialdiseases, mysterious viral diseases show up.
It was in the year 1915 an American physician TheobaldSmith, took the scientific medical community by surprise,
when he propounded his hypothesis called the GrimmsLaw. The latter, for the first time, brought into focus the roleof the bodys own defence mechanism. It stated that the
severity of the disease is directly proportionate to thevirulence of the cause, but inversely proportionate to the
resistance of the host.The idea of host resistance was a new light. Medicine
was under the spell of Robert Koch who, hundred yearsearlier, had propounded his Kochs postulates stating thatdisease is due to a cause. Since the time of Theobald Smith,and in the ensuing 70 odd years, the science of immunity has
opened up new vistas in health care. Thanks to the AIDS virus,we have had phenomenal progress in the field of hostresistance in the last one decade.
The human body has its own intelligence department like
the CIA and KGB. It is always wise to get correct informationfrom these systems and act accordingly. I would like to callthis information the body language. This language has to belearnt by everyone for ones own benefit.
It is always better to respond to our body language andsee doctors only when it is absolutely necessary. Tall talkabout preventive screening of the apparently healthy
population has not been beneficial to society.Although William Cullen, a great medical nosographer,
suggested that all diseases originate in the human mindthis aspect was not studied carefully for a long time. With the
advent of the new science of molecular biology we are now ina position to study the effect of mental attitudes, likehappiness, sorrow and depression, on body functions. It isnow possible to see how the immune system (defence
mechanism) of the body is directly controlled by variouspeptide hormones secreted in response to attitude of mind.This is now proving the old Ayurvedic wisdom by modernscientific methods. Tranquility of mind, equanimity,
forgiveness and looking after the welfare of others are theingredients of happy and healthy life exhorted Sushrutathousands of years ago.
The ultimate aim is to teach us to live a happy and healthylife as long as we live and if possible, to live with and bynature avoiding as far as possible medicines and doctors.

HEALTH FOR ALLHealth is the most important special index of the quality
of life.
The greatest need of the hour is how to attain and
maintain health and prevent disease, in spite of the oddsfacing us in the exacting artificial demands and tensions
of the modern civilized life. In the industrial age in whichwe are living, it is difficult to evade a stereotyped pattern
of life which overlooks the importance of healthacquisitiveness though we know the indispensable factthat neglect of the faculty of our being brings in its trail ill-
health, disease and suffering.Health is indisputably the most valued of all possessions
a person aspires for. Although it may be neglectedunconsciously, it is an inescapable fact that wealth without
health or happiness without health is incomplete. Hencethe emphasis primarily on health even at national levels.
The state of health implies much more than freedom
from disease, and good health may be defined as theattainment and maintenance of the highest state of mentaland bodily vigour.
A healthy body is attested by its functions being carriedout without discomfort, by the capacity for exertion
appropriate to the age of the individual and without unduefatigue, and by its possessing such reserves of energy asare adequate to the ordinary emergencies of everyday life.
Thus in the healthy man or woman food is digested, bloodsent circulating throughout the body, the lungs aerated
without any of its myriad functions obtruding itself on theconsciousness. Similarly, a healthy mind is adequate tosuch work as would reasonably be expected of it.
This is about adequate functioning of the body, athing apart from prime adequate functioning. It should
be possible to live with gusto, to have an appetite for workand play which is equally keen, a generous fountain of
energy should surge up within us and the exercise of brainor muscle should be in the highest degree pleasurable.
This degree of health is seen often enough in young people,but thought it is sometimes enjoyed by their elders it isnot nearly so common as it might be. It is not sought after
by very many, because its possibility is doubted, othersare too indolent to bother about it, while some find too
many obstacles in the way.People in general give very little attention to health until
it is destroyed. Then they call in a doctor thinking their
responsibility has ended, the idea being that health anddisease are largely matters of chance and that the
responsibility rests with the doctor. This is wrong thinking.
No improvement in the health care system can beefficacious unless the individual assumes responsibility
for his own well-being. There are substantial latent gainsin health care education because those who accept
responsibility for self-care are healthier than those whoare dependent on other to detect their ill health. For theold adage prevention is better than cure to fructify, every
person would have to study the art of right living.There are doubtless many factors and reason such as
pollution, adulteration of food, facing the stress and strainof modern life which give rise to modern health problems.But these may be lessened by corrective commercial action
and by individual effort and care. Other methods of healthyliving lie in consciously-cultivated habits, which are under
individual control.

these may be allocated to the sanitary authorities, muchcan be done by individual action. The first step being to
understand the nature of such or ganisms and of the waysin which they should be eliminated.
A high degree of personal cleanliness as well as that ofthe home should be maintained, the destruction of fliesand other insect carriers of disease, vigilant protection of
food should be carried out. Food which is possibly infectedshould be sterilised, and antiseptics and disinfectants
should be intelligently used whenever and wherevernecessary. The Mosaic law of washing the hands beforetaking food is no mere ceremonial, and not only in feeding
but while handing food the hands should be cleaned.There are two sources of bacterial poisoning which are
responsible for a large number of not only minor maladiesand generally low conditions of health, but also of seriousdisease, these sources are the mouth and the bowel.
FOOD AND DIGESTIONRelated to these subjects, both as cause and effect,
are those concerning food and digestion. Because of thefact that much of the food required is exported, that such
a large proportion of the population lives in towns, wherefresh foodstuffs are difficult of access and that there is somuch refinement leading to overcooking and use of
excessive spices in the preparation of food, that it hasbecome habitual for us to take improper food. There is too
little fresh food, and especially fresh fruit, vegetables anddairy produce in the diet of many households.
In too many instances ill-health is due to insufficiency
of food. This comes about due to an unskillful choice offood, and unhealthy and unattractive methods of cooking.
There are many cheap foods which are very nutritious andwhich skill in cookery may make as appetising as more
expensive foods. A widespread knowledge of food valuesand nutritional preparation would prove invaluable in
improving the health of the masses.A common mistake among well-to-do people is to take
an excess of food. Good cooking helps the digestion offood enormously, but it may easily tempt one to eat inexcess, and when this becomes habitual it brings serious
trouble in its wake. Good and balanced nutrition is thesurest safeguard against most of the preventible diseases.
FRESH AIR AND SUNSHINEIn some quarters there is still a prejudice against the
open bedroom window, sinister properties are attributedto the night air. But nothing could be farther from the truth,as it has been proved experimentally that the night air is
freer from suspended impurities than the air during the
day. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the chiefvirtue of fresh air is the stimulation imparted by itscirculation about our bodies, and that one feels better inpurer air which is still than in stale air which is circulating
freely. Few people seem to realize how many hours theyspend in a bedroom and how unwholesome it must be to
have the circulation of air prevented by closed windows.Draughts have a terror for many, but a free current of airover the bedclothes cannot do any harm, besides the wider
the window is open the less the drought.It ought to be commonly known that the healthy rays
of the sun do not make their way through windows madeof ordinary glass. The importance of the violet rays is acomparatively recent discovery, but the lack of exposure
to them coupled with bad ventilation in a room and notenough exercise undoubtedly explains the discounted
state of health of the sedentary worker and of the housewifewho rarely goes beyond her doorstep.

IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISETo most people games are more interesting than mere
walking and they do afford better exercise, but it should not
be forgotten that before taking up a strenuous game, a
sedentary worker should make himself first of all fit by acourse of graduated gymnastics or easier kinds of outdoor
exercise. Active men or women who find that there is no timefor games should supplement outdoor walking by exercising
in their rooms for a few minutes each day, the exerciseschosen being such that bring as many muscles as possibleinto play and which move the joints as freely as possible.
For others the prescription may be different, they mayrequire more rest, and in particular a longer time in bed,
about seven or eight hours as a rule. In bed the muscles ofthe body are allowed to relax properly, for it always requires
some muscular effort to maintain even a sitting posture,the heart rate reduces and the heart gets more rest, andthe brain and other portions of the nervous system get time
for rest. To ensure a proper nights rest, strenuous mentalwork should not be engaged in just before bedtime.
It is often said that the best rest is a change of
occupation, and there is a considerable amount of truth inthis. Turning to a fresh subject of thought or a different
kind of manual occupation tends to prevent staleness andfatigue, and a large volume of work may be achieved inthis way. Hence the health value of an absorbing hobby
for the leisure hours. But discretion must be shown inpursuing such a plan in moderation, or the cumulative
effect of a variety of occupations may drain ones reservesof energy unduly.
The main clauses of the charter of health have now been
considered, and if they are understood and followed thereneed be no fussy pre-occupation about the functioning of
the body. In many respects the body can be likened to amachine. Its mechanism is intricate and delicate but it
differs from an ordinary machine in its inherent powers ofadjustment and control, in its powers of resistance to cause
of disease and its power of repair. The essentialcomponents of the body are living cells, each of whichwill put up a fight for life and comfort.
A sane balanced method of living affords thiscommonwealth of body cells the best opportunity to fulfil
their destiny. A succession of fads in the matter of dietand indiscriminate resort to drugs of one kind or anotheronly impedes and confuses the natural immune system. If
the body gets the right kind of food and a sufficiency ofoxygen, and is kept free from waste products by the regular
action of the excretory organs of the body, it is best leftalone. In exceptional circumstances a system of diet orthe action of a drug may become necessary.
HEALTH OF THE MINDMany people go through their lives dogged by the
haunting fear of this or that disease. Fear has a depressinginfluence on the body, and there are curious instances of
individuals succumbing to the very disease which theydread - That which I feared has come upon me.
The notion of hygiene of the body is familiar to most,
but few people are so alive to the necessity of the hygieneof the mind. The kind of ideas that form the content of the
mind is not a matter of indifference to the health of eithermind or body. Just as the body must be supplied withwholesome food and be purged from deleterious
substances, so must the mind be supplied with sane,healthy ideas and be cleared of such as are the opposite.
Thinking is not confined to the brain. The whole bodyparticipates in it. The mind, especially the emotions are

exalt or depress bodily functions as quickly and aspowerfully as the most potent drugs or the most active
physical agents. The relation between the body and mindis so intimate that if either gets out of order the wholesystem suffers.
There are various methods propounded for the studyof the knowledge of oneself and of the mind in relation to
health, such as Metaphysical Science, Psychology, Yoga,Philosophy, Theosophy, Occultism, Christian Science,Vegetarianism, Hypnotism, Astrology, Faith, Prayer and
Meditation, Spiritual Healing, etc. Call it by any name, healthis the result of living in accordance with the laws that
operate in the mind, emotions and sense impressions, suchknowledge helps one to reveal ones truest worth. The ideathat our own thoughts play a decisive role in health and
illness presents us with an enormous responsibility, onewhich we previously delegated entirely to physicians.
Sickness in ancient times, was largely due to ignoranceof the physical laws governing health. Hippocrates,popularly known as The Moses of medicine, in his time,
led the physician from the Egyptian darkness of magic andsuperstition into the pronounced law of rational therapy.
In the modern world, sickness is more often the resultof ignorance of the laws governing the mental, emotionaland spiritual forces operating in peoples lives. In our efforts
to conquer externals we have failed to meet the challengeof the internal existence. Prevention or the positive building
of health and mental hygiene should be the aim and objectof the Healing Arts, as positive health is the only trueprophylactic or means of immunity against disease.

RAW JUICE THERAPYJuice therapy has been approved by scientists and
government. The Public and Health Service Laboratory of the
British Health Ministry has recently published a few important
results of juice diet. The report states that the sources of the
essential amino acids, the cell building factors, are destroyed
by heat and processing and not obtained in rheumatic,
degenerative and toxic states, Juices have all-round protective
action. Good results can be obtained with large amounts upto
one litre juice daily in treatment of peptic ulceration, also in
treatment of chronic diarrhoea, colitis and toxemia of gastro
and intestinal origin.
The high buffering capacities of the juices reveal that they
are very valuable in the treatment of hyperchlorhydria. Milk
has often been used for this purpose, but cabbage juice andjuices of carrot and grapes were far superior to milk for this
purpose. 100 grams of cabbage juice added to 250 grams of
carrot juice is the best remedy for gastric and duodenal ulcers.
A cocktail prepared by mixing the juices of carrot, cabbage
and spinach work wonderfully to decrease the excessive
gastric acidity.
Some details about the juices therapy are given below. It
is necessary to select the requisite quantity of fruits and
vegetables before extracting the juice. For example, one litre
carrot juice will not be available from one kilo carrots, twokilos should be at hand before extracting juice from them.
Another important thing is that no sugar or salt should be
added to the juice. It should be taken alone.
During the juice therapy. no other food except juices
should be consumed. Complete physical and mental rest is
also a must during this period.
Make an effort to change all patterns of crit icism with respectto yourself & others. Your mind, body & soul wi ll feel t he posit iveresults.
Seek out recovery options for any unhealt hful addicti ons. Youremotional & spiritual growth moves beyond these old limitations.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE USE OF RAW JUICES :
ll Acidity : Juice of carrot, spinach, salad, sweet fruits likegrapes and citrus fruits like oranges and mosambi. A little
milk may be taken to get rid of the symptoms of acidity.ll
Acne : Juices of carrot, water melon, spinach, onion andgrape.ll Loss of Appetite : Lemonated water should be taken in the
morning. A mixture of 2 parts of tomato juice and 1 part ofpineapple juice should be taken thereafter. Apart from thejuice therapy, this mixture may also be taken as an appetiserhalf an hour before meals.
ll Arthritis : Juices of cucumber, carrot, cabbage, coriander,celery, apple, wheatgrass juice and coconut water.
ll Bronchial Asthma : Juices of carrot, cabbage, celery, grape
and vegetable or mung soup. Goats milk is recommended.
Ghee and oil are contraindicated.ll Jaundice : Juices of orange, pineapple, grape, apple,
raspberry etc. Chewing sugarcane pieces is very effective.
Raisins can be used as an alternative for grapes.ll Impurity of Blood : Juices of cabbage, carrot, beet, spinach,
tomato, apple and lemonated water.ll Hypertension : Juices of carrot, grape, orange, sweet lemon
and wheatgrass. Complete physical and mental rest innecessary.
ll Skin Diseases : Juices of spinach, cucumber, carrot, garlic,cabbage and coconut.
ll Bronchitis : Juices of orange, sweet lemon, carrot,pineapple, papaya and other sweet fruits. Mung soup isquite effective. Starchy foods should be avoided.
ll Anaemia : Juices of orange, mosambi, grape, apple,tomato, beet, carrot, spinach, raspberry, Ripe bananas anddate fruits are also effective.
ll Prevention of Cancer : Juices of wheatgrass, carrot and
grape.
ll Coughs and Colds : Juices of carrot, radish, garlic andsoups of vegetables and mung.
ll Teething Problems : Pineapple juice with a little lemon juiceadded to it. (100 grams per day.)
ll Beautiful Complexion : Tomato juice twice a day.ll Colitis : Juices of carrot, beet and pineapple. Carrot juice
can be mixed with other juices and taken. This mixtureshould contain-carrot 70%, beet 6%, cabbage 6%,cucumber 6%, celery 6%, coconut 6%.
ll Diabetes : Juices of carrot, spinach, cabbage, celery, bitter

MENTAL WELL BEING & POISEHealthy people are happy people and further happy are
healthier than unhappy people. It appears that happiness(which simply means having happy thoughts most of the
time) causes biochemical changes in the brain. This in turnprofoundly affects the bodys physiology. The brainchemicals, through which thoughts are working are knownas neurotransmitters. At least 30 different kinds have beenidentified in the brain tissue. The ratio of theseneurotransmitters to one another can change - accordingto the mood. Thus, in effect, to think is to practice brainchemistry. The chemistry influences hormone secretionsfrom various sites throughout the brain, such as thehypothalamus and the pituitary, and these hormones thencarry messages to distant organs in the body.
Were it possible to accurately measure all the fluctuations,stimulations, impairment and inhibitions caused by emotions/thoughts we would fully understand the role and importanceof positive thoughts - or simply, happiness and poise.Palpitations, blood pressure fluctuation, involuntary emptyingof bladder and colon, tearing of the eyes/nose, fainting,trembling , blushing, sweating are some of the evidences ofthe disturbances of organic functions that take place underemotions. These are carried out by thoughts, working throughenzymes and hormones, vis-a-vis our food and environment
Severely disturbed thought has long been linked todistortions in brain chemistry (for, there is no twisted
thought, without a twisted molecule). Likewise, happythoughts of all kinds lead to physiological changes thatlead to good health, because the neurotransmitters thatmediate them in the body have a stimulating effect.
