District-wide fundraiser nets $1,300 for Hurricane Sandy relief

When Holley parent Darlene Pritchard

was waiting for a recent flight, she began talking with another passenger who was on her way to deliver socks to a Third World country that were collected during a community sock drive. That got her thinking about how she could spearhead a fundraiser in Holley that would help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The American Red Cross indicated that money would help the victims the most because there were so many different needs. So Pritchard teamed up with Elementary Teacher Lisa Hendry and the two decided to have a “Dress Up Week” with each student and staff member paying $1 for every day they participated. K-12 students and staff had fun dressing up for Hat Day, Sports Day, Pajama Day, Formal Day, and Crazy Color Day. In all, over $1,300 was raised!

“This was an effort by the whole district – students and staff,” said Hendry. “I recruited a group of students to sort and count the money, and the kids really pitched in.”

Soaring to New HeightsThe December Soaring to New Heights Awards honored three

individuals for their dedication to Holley students.

Paula Sanford (left) and Lynn Vendetti were recognized for their work implementing the Girls on the Run program at Holley Elementary. Sanford and Vendetti were the mentors for 15 girls in grades 3-5 who participated in the program, which culminated with a 5K run.

Alex Mounts, an eighth-grade student at the Middle/High School, helps his fellow students stay on task and work diligently to complete their coursework, earing the district-wide accolade. Mounts was nominated by Whitney Davis. Davis said that the student Mounts assists would be lost without his help and that she really appreciates the extra mile that he goes.

Postcard Auction helps families in need

Art students at the Middle School/High School recently created small

works of art for a good cause. More than 65 students sold 114 postcard size pieces of art in a clothesline silent auction event at the Holiday Concert.

Art Teacher Jason Elsner and School Counselor Kristina Mack were brainstorming ideas on how to make the arts more visible in the Holley community before deciding on an art auction. Concert attendees put raffle tickets in bags next to the art they liked and then winning tickets were drawn. In all, the event raised $60 for Food for Families, a district initiative that helps families in need during the school recesses.

A message from the Superintendent

Happy New Year! I hope that 2013 brings you and your family a year filled with good fortune and good health.

It’s hard to believe that in a short while, half of this school year will be over. The second semester enables us to concentrate on all of the end-of-year assessments while planning for the next school year.

With respect to the state assessments, we ask that you join us in emphasizing to your child the importance of performing well. That means getting plenty of rest, eating right, and study-ing hard. Doing these three things will translate to success on these state assessments.

The Capital Project is going very well. It is on time and on budget. All of the site work (outside work) has been completed and now we turn our attention to the last phase of the project: the center portion of the Middle School/High School. At the Elementary School, both gyms have been renovated and they look great. The football/all-weather track stadium has been completed. Once spring arrives, feel free to use and enjoy the

all-weather track. Our new transportation facility will open in late February/early March. This will be a modern, up-to-date facility that will serve our transportation needs for years to come. The entire project is due to be completed in late sum-mer/early fall of 2013 and upon completion, the district will host a community open house. I hope that you will be able to attend and observe the outstanding facilities that we have cre-ated for our students and community.

Helper lessons include visit from a veterinarian

UPK students recently celebrated helpers in the

community and had special visitors as well. Mrs. Cheryl Kipp’s class was visited by a dental hygienist, pizza maker, martial artist, fireman, dance teacher, police officer and, on Nov. 28, a veterinarian.

Dr. Krista Wiley from Wiley’s Ark interacted with the students and discussed her job as a veterinarian. She also brought Bella, her dog, and many examples of the tools she works with into the classroom. Students were able to see radiographs from different animals and hear about how Dr. Wiley helped them to get better.

Before Dr. Wiley came into the classroom, the students made their own veterinarian kits that included paper thermometers, crepe paper gauze and faux radiographs. Mrs. Kipp also provided each student with a stuffed pet to take home.

HS science class helps teach younger students about the environment

recently visited two classes at the Elementary School to share books and activity books that they created with an environmental science theme.

“We wrote children’s books as the first environmental project of the year since children’s books contained some of our first childhood exposures to environmental science themes and issues,” said Wischerath.

Before the students wrote their stories, they read and reviewed children’s books to get ideas.

Students in Loretta Giarrizzo’s second grade and Jolynda Sevenski’s third grade classes listened to the stories and then received activity books that they could take home and share with their families.

The National PTA is sponsoring a contest called “Building Today’s PTA” and the winning school receives a check for $6,000. The PTSA only needs a few more memberships to be in the running to win this prize. The cost of a PTSA membership is just $9. Membership forms can be printed from the school website (holleycsd.org), and are also available in the lobby of the Elementary School and Middle School/High School.

Save the date! The College Admission Information Night (C.A.I.N.) will be Tuesday, March 5 at 6:45 p.m. at Brockport High School. This event is the perfect opportunity to learn about financial aid opportunities and how to complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). Seniors should be in the process of filing for the FAFSA. Please see your counselor if you have questions. The event also discusses college prep and examines what college admission counselors look for in determining acceptance to their colleges. Area representatives from various colleges will be available, including Genesee Community College, St. John Fisher College, SUNY Fredonia, The College at Brockport, Rochester Institute of Technology and University at Buffalo. After the presentation, college representatives and school counselors will be available to answer any questions that you have.

Scholarships Scholarships are posted on our website on a rolling basis at www.holleycsd.org/scholarships. PLEASE continue to check the website (counseling, scholarships) and to see me to obtain applications. Pay particular attention to the deadlines! The scholarships are also posted in the Counseling Office and copies have been provided by the attendance desk.

Attention, Seniors! Senior students should be applying to colleges by now. They also should be taking the SAT and/or ACT again, if they haven’t already. Watch for college application and scholarship deadlines. Make sure application information is sent on time. In addition, seniors should provide their counselors with a list of colleges to which they have applied and been accepted.

Get ready, Juniors!Now is the time that juniors should start thinking about plans after graduation. Before the holiday break, counselors met with juniors to discuss their PSAT results, and created accounts on collegeboard.com and actstudent.org for SAT and ACT registrations. In addition, career exploration and completing of college applications is ongoing.

The FAFSA is now available at: www.fafsa.ed.gov! The FAFSA is the source of all federal and state aid, loans and work study programs. This form must be filled out online and submitted to the colleges by, or preferably, before their due dates in order to be eligible for these programs.

Scheduling is upon usCounselors will begin to meet with students very soon to discuss and select courses for next year. Parents, keep your eyes open for your invitation to attend your child’s scheduling meeting. You are encouraged to attend these pre-scheduled meetings and be actively involved in the selection process.

Final tip:Students planning to apply to four-year colleges will need to complete their applications ASAP. Those students planning to attend two-year colleges should be making appointments to take placement tests and meet with advisors if they have already applied and been accepted.

Congratulations, seniors!Congratulations to the following seniors on receiving college acceptance letters. Seniors are encouraged to provide copies of their letters to their school counselor and their names will be published in Dimension.

Michael Silvis received the Pat Tillman Warrior Award for this year’s football season. Pat Tillman was a football player who left his professional career and enlisted in the United States Army in June 2002 in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. He joined the Army Rangers and served several tours in combat before he died in the mountains of Afghanistan. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and a posthumous promotion to the rank of Specialist. Silvis was honored with this award and plaque on Nov. 15.

Paralympics videos provide lessons to PE classes

Students in Jill Mann’s physical education class recently viewed a video of a sitting volleyball

match from the 2012 Paralympics. After watching the video, the students tried the sport themselves. The middle school girls’ classes were asked to take the lesson beyond the classroom, watching and reflecting on a couple videos from the Paralympics. Seventh grader Angela Weaver wrote, “After watching the video of a sitting volleyball match, I feel comforted. I feel comforted because the players that were disabled are equalized by everyone sitting. I also feel happy because I know that if I were ever paralyzed or handicapped in some way I can still play sports. Sports are important to me.”

Teen topics presented by ninth-grade students

PJ Duffy presents to the fifth-graders of Brenda Schurr’s class about bullying and body image.

As part of a class project, the students in Mrs. Suzanne

Lepkowski’s ninth-grade English class presented to fifth- and sixth-grade students on teen topics.

“Previously, we have done an ad campaign to try and help relay the messages to the younger students,” said Lepkowski. “This year, we wanted to take it a step further.”

“These messages are very important and the message comes across even stronger when the younger students hear directly from the older students,” added Lepkowski.

The ninth-grade students read books related to their topics and then researched the topics and created a PowerPoint presentation. Lepkowski’s students also created skits based on scenes in the books they read.

As a culmination to all of their hard work, the students traveled over to the elementary school, performed their skits and presented to the younger students. Lepkowski asked each presenter to share something they learned with the younger students.

“Don’t change yourself. People will love you the way you are if they’re your friends,” said PJ Duffy, a student who read “Maximum Ride” by James Patterson.

The annual Holley Holiday Days of Shopping was on Nov. 29 and 30 for parents of HCSD students. New and gently used toys and gifts were available to the parents, free of charge. Students are seen here categorizing and setting up the gifts in the Middle/High School auditorium.

Elementary School. • During the week of Dec. 17, the Middle/High School

library started to be moved to accommodate pending work. The library will temporarily be housed in the sky-lit courtyard, which was recently completed. Three new classrooms adjacent to the courtyard will also be available to the Middle/High School when classes resume after holiday recess.

• The bus maintenance facility continues to take shape and will open in late February/early March. Radiant heat flooring and lighting were recently installed in the work and lift bays, along with continued work in other areas of the facility. A perk of the new facility is its location separate from the traffic of students and visitors. However, individuals have been disregarding the speed limit of the road connecting the bus garage to the two buildings. Please be mindful of the speed limits posted.

Emily Radford, Melissa Qualey, Teresa Nicoletti, Hayley Diep and Heather Winkley helped prepare bags of non-perishable items for Holley families in need of a little extra help over the holiday break. These bags are the beginning of HCSD’s Food for Families program, which looks to provide students with non-perishable items over school breaks. Items will also be available for the recesses in February and April. If you are interested in participating in the program or have any questions, please contact Ms. Lauer at 585-638-6318 ext. 2558.
