Holmes taking assistance applications

The Holmes County Vet-erans Service Center will accept applications for assistance for January 2015 through Jan. 23 at noon.

The board will meet Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. Office hours are Mondays, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and Tuesday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The center will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Unique and diversified

Ruby’s Country Store has been bringing unique items and basically anything that owner Ruby Mast has seen a need for in the community to their location just outside of Winesburg for the past 21 years.

There is a wide variety of products throughout the store including housewares, toys, gospel music, school supplies, party supplies, handmade greeting cards, Rhythm Clocks and various other gift items.

“I wanted a store that had a lot of necessities coupled with gift items,” said Ruby. “I hoped people would not have to run to big cities, but could find it here.”

The store also stocks hard to find items that box stores may not have such as stock-pots, large stainless steel bowls, china sets and stone-ware as well as toys that are durable and made to last.

The idea for the store came into being after

Ruby’s grandfather, who owned a large warehouse, sold the building to Ruby’s father. Ruby then asked her father if he would insulate and finish it for a store.

“I often went into stores similar to mine with a fas-cination and dreamed of having my own one day,” Ruby remembers. “Much to my delight my father said yes to finishing the building and soon we were hard at work making the inside into a nicely lit open area for the store.”

in. Much of the shelving, which was transported to the store by family, came from the old Big Wheel store in Millersburg.

After the store first opened Ruby owned it for about two years and then had the urge to move to Michigan. While she was away, Ruby’s parents, Wayne and Sarah

Ann Mast, stepped in and bought the inventory, oper-ating it for 13 years. During this time they finished the remaining two-thirds of the warehouse and kept adding inventory.

Ruby’s brother, Joe Mast, and his wife, Diane, opened an additional section of the store adding fabrics and

notions and then six years ago when Wayne and Sarah Ann were ready to retire they offered the business to Ruby once again.

“I was waiting and so happy to get into the swing again,” said Ruby. “I have enjoyed adding my own
