UPCOMING TESTING INFORMATION The end of the school year always brings testing for students. Grades 3-6 will be taking the AIMS Assessment (Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards) during the week of April 7-11. Simultaneously, Grade 2 will be taking the Stanford 10 Assessment. Both are a standards based assessment developed by Arizona teachers to fulfill a federal requirement. The AIMS measures student proficiency of AZ academic content standards in writing, reading, math and science. The Stanford 10 compares student growth to students in the same grades across the nation. Both are a requirement by state and federal law. It is extremely important that we test 100% of our students, so please make sure your children are at school and on time each and every day during this week. We need your help with this. In addition, Grades 1-2 will be taking the CRT assessment between April 21 - May 2. This is a district based assessment measuring math and reading achievement. Please read below for some important TESTING TIPS you can help with at home: Make sure your children do their homework every night and READ, READ, READ with your child. Dear Parents, I can’t believe our school year is coming to an end. I have LOVED being the new principal of Holmes this year and can’t wait for year two. Thank you for your partnership and for sharing your children with all of us at Holmes.

HOLMES HEART TO HEART I held my first Holmes Heart to Heart parent meeting in January. The main message I heard from parents is more communication, more movie nights, and keep the kids safe! We will be working on improvements in these areas for next year. If you would like to attend the next Heart to Heart parent meeting, it will be March 31 at 1:00 in the library. It is open for any and all families that would like to celebrate good things happening at Holmes, and/or concerns and ideas you have for Holmes.

Make sure you kids eat a good dinner the night before testing

Make sure your children get a good night sleep the nights before testing

Encourage them to do their absolute best and give them lots of encouragement

If they do not eat breakfast at school, please make sure they eat a good breakfast

DREAM BIG ….. Getting kids to think about going to college As you know, our school theme is Dream Big and Do Big Things! We have been talking to kids all school year about their dreams. They all created a Dream Star this year and set goals for themselves. Our 5th graders attended a field trip to Mesa Community College, and our 6th graders will be visiting Arizona State University. These will be annual field trips for our students as they reach this age. We want our students to reach for the starts and begin to think about their futures now and know that college is a reachable goal for everyone! We tell them that everything they do now gets them one step closer to their DREAM!!

Attendance BINGO You should be receiving flyers from the office announcing Attendance Bingo. Attendance Bingo is open for ALL families to attend. We have this event on the calendar monthly and for every week your child has perfect attendance they receive a bingo card. If they had perfect attendance all 4 weeks, they receive a BONUS 5th bingo card. Then we play Bingo for prizes!! It’s a completely free event open for all families. Students must be accompanied by an adult. Please join us at our next Attendance Bingo event for this school year on Monday, March 31st in the MPR. Hope to see you there!

50th Anniversary Celebration Did you know that Holmes is celebrating its 50th Anniversary? We are so excited. Please mark your calendars for Friday, April 25th. We will be having a school wide celebration, and you are all invited! We will begin with a formal ceremony followed by a community 50’s Sock Hop. You can wear your poodle skirts, bobby socks, and saddle shoes while dancing to 50’s music. It should be a blast!! More information will follow.

Responsibility

Ansvar is the elephant that represents responsibility. His name is from the Norwegian word for “responsible.” Ansvar

thinks before he acts and is accountable for his choices. He is a hard worker who leaves nothing to

chance. He has a strong sense of duty. Ansvar’s one big worry is that he might forget something.

To help himself remember things, he ties colorful bows and ribbons around his toes, his tail, or even

his trunk. He also wears a green ribbon medallion around his neck.

Green is the color that represents responsibility, as in being responsible for a garden, yard (green

grass) or finances.

Be responsible in school by following school rules:

School rules are made to protect all students and help make it a safe place to learn.

The responsible person does his or her best on any task:

The responsible student completes the whole job, not just part of it (class work and homework).

Be responsible by planning ahead:

Use your agenda planner. Pack your book bag each night before you go to bed.

Choose the clothes you plan to wear the next day before you go to bed.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

Aesop’s Fable

One summer day a grasshopper was singing and chirping and hopping about. He was having a wonderful time. He saw an

ant that was busy gathering and storing grain for the winter. Stop and talk to me, said the grasshopper. We can sing some

songs and dance a while. Oh no, said the ant. Winter is coming. I am storing up food for the winter. I think you should do

the same. Oh, I can’t be bothered, said the grasshopper. Winter is a long time off. There is plenty of food. So the

grasshopper continued to dance and sing and chirp and the ant continued to work. When winter came the grasshopper had

no food and was starving. He went to the ant’s house and asked, can I have some wheat or maybe a few kernels of corn?

Without it I will starve, whined the grasshopper. You danced last summer, said the ants in disgust, you can continue to

dance. They gave him no food.

Moral: There is a time to work and a time to play.

“Whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing well.”

Philip Stanhope

We had several students receive excellent academic achievement awards for second quarter. These students were recognized on the morning news and their teachers passed out certificates to them. Their pictures are located on our school website as well for their hard work in school. We are so proud of them all!!
