New Season Underway for Veteran Runners The 2012 YVAA Multi-terrain Grand Prix Series has started again with a race at Horsforth on the 12th February with well over 200 runners turning out on cool but fine morning. The results and prize giving after the race are always worth staying for, with a snack and drink usually available, either free or at very little cost, to enjoy while you chat to fellow competitors from both your own and other Yorkshire clubs. Once you’ve done a few races you will get to know those of a similar standard/speed to yourself and this creates friendly rivalry and support plus a chance to chat afterwards. As well as the usual age group prizes for the faster runners, there are spot prizes for every 15th finisher plus extra spot prizes in a draw of finish positions for those that stay for the results. Only a small contingent from Holmfirth made this first race in the 10 race series but those that did turn out came away with several prizes. First home and 1st M40 was Dave Watson and Margaret Sykes completed the double by being 1st lady and 1st F40. Others in the prizes included James Durrans, 3rd M40, John Ewart 1st M55 and Bill Wade, 3rd M70. These races are not just about the winning of prizes though. Every runner counts towards the overall team points for the year and they are both very competitive all the way down the field while being at the same time, very friendly and enjoyable events. The next race in the series will be at Otley 1.00pm start on the 4th March details are on the Vets Board at the club and can be found at www.yvaa.org. This is a new race and is advertised as 5.8 miles of roadside footpaths, road and trail. For those that prefer road running on the 25th March the YVAA 10 mile Championships is included in the Thirsk 10 and again details and entry forms can be found at www.yvaa.org .

YVAA Cross Country Championships February 19th 2012

This event has traditionally been one that we turn out a large number of runners and we managed 32 runners again this year. Even though it looked at one time as if we might get over 45 runners out and so lost a lot over the last few days it was still a real achievement and we were one of the best represented clubs at the championships. It was great to see some of our fastest Vets and some of our very much slower Vets turning out to represent the club including 3 that had never raced for the club before.

The course was excellent and the cold but brilliantly sunny day and slightly frosted ground with plenty of grass cover meant dry clean spikes or trainers at the end of the races. We had both the 1st and 2nd ladies home in Helen Berry, 1st and 1st F35 and Margaret Sykes, 2nd and 1st F40 and also the first man in Race 3 with Dave Watson, 1st and 1st M40 Other results:

Women Julia Johnson 13th and 3rd F45; Debbie Hall F35, 14th; Lesley Ewart 16th and 1st F55; Christine Couch 20th and 2nd F50; Yvette Arthur 23rd and 3rd F50; Jean Shotter F45, 41st; Jo Bailey-Taylor F40, 56th; Clare Ash F45, 61st; Jeanette White F60, 64th; Toni Traynor F40, 66th; Tracy Durrans F40 67th; Fay Dolphin Guest, 71st and Den Kersey F60 73rd.

In the team events Helen Margaret and Debbie were 1st F35 – 44 team and with the other ladies in the age group were 2nd F35 – 44 All to Count Team. Julia, Christine and Yvette were 1st F45 – 54 Team and with the other ladies in the age group were again 2nd F45 – 54 All to Count Team. In the F55+ category Lesley, Jeanette and Den were 3rd team. Men The M70 men ran 5K the same as the women. This was the first time Holmfirth had managed an M70 team and Bill Wade, Tim Cock and Dave Cowgill were 2nd M70 team The men’s 10K race was split into two sections with the M50 – 69 runners starting at 12.00 noon and the M35 – 49 runners at 1.15 pm. In the first race Holmfirth results were: John Ewart 8th and 1st M55; Andy Hauser M55,13th; Kevin Yewlett M50, 40th; Steve Beardsell M60, 48th; Ian Arnold M55, 64th; Martin Seddon M60, 86th; Roger Bradley M60, 88th and Steve White M55, 92nd. Thirsk 10 : March 25th Salford 10k : April 6th Sheffield Half : May 27th Unfortunately due to safety reasons the club committee have decided not to host the Holmfirth 15 this year so there will be an announcement on a replacement 'long' race in the next newsletter.

Liversedge Half Marathon Sunday 12th February saw 7 Harriers compete in the Liversedge Half Marathon. Fortunately the freezing weather of the previous few days stayed away and conditions were cold but calm. On what is a hilly course, especially the short but sharp Thornhills Beck Lane there were some great times. Leading the field home was Andrew Whittingham from Altrincham & District AC in a great time of 75.23 and 1st lady was Kim Threadgall who had travelled from Edinburgh to claim the honours in a time of 86.12. 1st home for the Harriers in an fantastic time of 90.28 was Maz Khoueiry , followed by Jacqui Khoueiry who was 4th lady home in a time of 91.36, great times from them both. Next across the line for the Harriers was Helen Standing in a time of 99.08, claiming 2nd F35 prize and securing yet another positive training run towards Greater Manchester Marathon. David Senior followed in a excellent time of 104.48. Rosemary Baker was next across the line with a strong performance on the back of weeks of marathon training with a finishing time of 105.46, completing the ladies team. David Cowgill also put in a strong performance coming home in a time of 119.25, securing 2nd M65 prize. Richard Whale, who is training for the Jerusalem Marathon, also ran well in a time of 125.47. The trio of Jacqui, Helen and Rosemary secured the ladies team prize.

Huddersfield 10k

The second event in the club championship saw 28 Harriers taking on this challenging event organised by Huddersfield Road Runners. Matthew Pierson on the comeback trail after some frustrating injuries took the race victory in a time of 34:12. Kath Farquhar also took the female title finishing in a time of 41:15.

Wombwell 5

Richard Smith continued his good form at this under raced distance to take a comfortable victory in a time of 26:05. Recent recruit James Little had his first race on the road as a member of Holmfirth finishing in 5th with a time of 27:33.

Great North West Half Marathon

The clubs marathon hopefuls where out in force at this half run along the seafront at Blackpool and all six recorded personal best times. Paul Crowther was the first Harrier home in a time of 1:26:52. Liz Woodfield, who was the only Holmfirth runner not preparing for London, dipped under the 90 minute mark with a time of 1:29:16. John Field and Matthew Rose had a battle with John taking the honours on this occasion. John ran 1:32:30 and Matthew 1:32:43. Simon Edwards (right in Blackpool) wrapped up warm in case the tide came in but stayed dry and ran a time of 1:55:20. Diane Kolat was the sixth Harrier with a confidence boosting 2:05:53.

Snake Lane 10

The well established Snake Lane at Pocklington is a favourite for those tackling London but only one of the Harriers racing was preparing for this. Claire Leaver was first home in 64:50 followed very closely by the ever improving Lorraine Smith in 65:39. Adrian Smith ran a good time of 81:06 and was followed by Angela Currid, who is preparing for London, in a time of 84:49.

Ilkley Moor Fell Races 26th February 2012

A busy weekend of racing, including the National XC championships at Parliament Hill, meant that Holmfirth numbers were slightly down on last year for this series of races hosted by Ilkley Harriers. Thankfully the starting field, which last year was just a boggy mess after weeks of rain, had a good covering of grass and didn’t present too many problems for our 11 juniors and we had some great results against the massed ranks of Ilkley and Keighley and Craven.

The course was unchanged and has something for everyone – stream crossings, muddy banks, heather, bracken, tussocks and a steep downhill finish with a little sting in the tail! After the congestion at the first stream crossing last year, the organisers decided to stagger the starts for each race – a sensible plan as there were over 150 taking part! It also had the desired effect, as 5 course records were broken. For the first time in a while, there were no Harriers in the U8’s race, so interest turned to the U16’s and U18’s who were next to set off. Annabel Mason from Wakefield led from start to finish and on the 2 lap course, smashed her own record by over a minute, finishing in 12.59. For Holmfirth, Eddie Hinchliffe is training very well at the moment and showed this by finishing 3rd overall (2nd boy) in 14.32. Next to set off were the U14’s, which for the girls this year is a very competitive age-

group and remarkably, they had 3 of the top 4 finishers. Sarah Pickering from Ilkley broke the course record,

finishing in 7.23, which was only seconds ahead of Lucy Byram, who finished 3rd overall (2nd girl) in 7.26 and Erica Byram, who was 4th overall (3rd girl) in 7.33 – a really great tussle!

A little further back, we had Daisy Smith, who was 18th in 8.36 and Daniel Whitworth, who was 20th in 8.54.

We had 3 runners in the U12’s, all in their first year in this age-group. Like his dad, Ollie Rees is enjoying the fells and did very well to finish 7th overall in 7.49.

Harry Hobbs was next back, finishing 30th in 9.43, followed by Lucy Whitworth, 38th in 10.36.

#

Last to set off were the U10’s and in a very fast race, where Eric Beaumont from Keighley broke the record to finish in 7.35, George Hobbs ran very well to finish 8th in 8.49. Slightly further back, Millie Yates finished 20th in 9.48, pipping her sister Ruby, who was 30th in 10.32.

Feb 2012 10

The senior race was the first counter in this year’s Fell Champs and although injury and other commitments robbed us of a couple of entrants, there were still 13 Harriers on the start line for the short and sharp 5 mile race. The course initially climbs steadily up past the Cow and Calf rocks onto the moor itself and then you spend the next 4 miles watching your feet as you plunge downhill on rocky paths and clamber up muddy banks, taking in the Pancake Stone, Backstone Beck and the Badger Stone before the final grassy plunge back to Wells Road! The conditions favoured a fast race and in a very strong field boasting Tom Adams of Ilkley, Graham Pearce of Pudsey and Bramley and Andy Peace of Bingley, Alistair Rees was first back for Holmfirth, finishing 16th overall, 5th V40, in 42.10.

After a fast start, Gavin Baxter also ran well, finishing just outside the top 30 in 45.07.

For the ladies, Lucy Needham had a great race, finishing 90th overall, 6th lady in 51.05 and it was great to see some relative newcomers to the fells in Fran and Lee Whitworth and Clare Ash finishing with smiles on their faces (almost!). Unfortunately, Robert Hinchliffe took a tumble in his first senior race and had to retire, but still gained some valuable experience at the increased distance and will be back for more!

Next up for the juniors is Pendle on Saturday 7th April, which again is both an English and Lancashire Junior Championship event. For the seniors, it’s a little closer to home, with our own Ian Roberts race from Marsden CC on Sunday 11th March.

Results (Holmfirth unless stated): 1st - Tom Adams (Ilkley) 36.18; 16th and 5th V40 - Alistair Rees, 42.10; 21st and 1st lady - Emma Clayton (Bingley) 43.12 (new ladies record); 34th - Gavin Baxter, 45.07; 79th - Phil Hobbs, 50.23; 90th and

6th lady Lucy Needham, 51.05; 142nd – Dave Knight, 56.12; 153rd – Andrei Vais, 57.52; 156th – Debbie Hall, 58.16; 167th – Lee Whitworth, 59.04; 168th – Fran Whitworth, 59.06; 213th – Jim Sommerville, 64.52; 229th – Clare Ash, 67.15 and 238th – Sophie Barraclough, 69.13 (255 finishers). English National Cross Country Championships Saturday 25th February

The conditions for last Saturday’s English National Cross Country Championships could not have been more different from those last year. Rather than a mud-soaked course that athletes had endured at Alton Towers in 2011, Parliament Hill Fields in London was only soaked in sunshine. The course was undulating and at the highest points the view back down to the start and over the City of London was spectacular. With perfect weather for racing and spectating, it proved a glorious day for the select few Holmfirth Harriers who had made the long journey south.

First off was Olivia Sykes in the Under 13 Girls race. Having finished a fantastic fourth place in the Northern Championships 3 weeks previously, Olivia was keen to put her good form to the test over the 3km course. She made a good start, having been placed in a pen on the far left hand side of the start line which helped avoid the inevitable ‘scrum’, and gradually moved through the field, picking up some valuable places towards the end of the race as other competitors tired. Olivia finished in an impressive 19th place (12:19) in a field of 368, and just 39 seconds behind the winner Sabrina Sinha of

Cambridge Harriers.

Sophie Spencer

was the sole representative from Holmfirth in the Under 15 Girls 4 km race. The leap up to national level competition is significant in comparison to the local and regional events, and Sophie ran very well to finish comfortably within the top half of the 342-strong field in 16:40 (151st). The race was won by Bobby Clay of Invicta East Kent AC in 13:28.

The fifth and middle event in the timetable was the Junior Men’s race over 10km.

Max Kay had made the trip without the support of his team-mates who are collectively the Yorkshire Junior team Champions. The 10km course took in 2 large laps, each having three steady climbs which Max found tough on the second lap but still finished an excellent 36th place in a field of 196 in 34:04. Jonny Hay, from the dominant Aldershot, Farnham and District club won in 31:50.

CROSS COUNTRY

Next up was the Senior Women’s race. Once again Holmfirth were not able to field a team, but the club’s leading female cross country runners, Katie Walshaw and Helen Berry enjoyed individual success. It was the first time Katie had raced at Parliament Hill and the climbs suited her. As with most of the Holmfirth athletes, starting from a pen on the far left hand end of the start line gave Katie and Helen an advantage of not having to jostle for position on the first long steady climb. Katie achieved her goal of beating last year’s 33rd position, but was just pipped out of the top 30 on the final straight. Katie’s time of 30:13 earned her 31st place.

Having raced this 8km course 3 times before, Helen’s decision to make a steady start up the first hill and gradually work through the field paid dividends. She finished in 30:54 and in an excellent 43rd place, an improvement of almost 20 places on last year’s result. Gemma Steel of Charnwood won the event in 27:06. Last but not least was the Senior Men’s race. The start of this event – with nearly 1700 competitors – is a sight not to be missed, particularly with the backdrop of London from the popular vantage point at the top of the first hill. In such a large field a matter of seconds can affect an athlete’s position by ten or twenty places. The leading men made the 12km 2-lap course look easy. It was won by Keith Gerrard, Newham and Essex Beagles AC, 35:56 and Leeds City dominated the team event, winning both the ‘6 to count’ and ‘9 to count’ teams. Richard Anderson produced a great run for Holmfirth to finish 178th, just short of the top 10% of the field, in 41:10. Holmfirth’s only other representative was Steve White who finished 1588th in 1:03:52. Olivia, Max and Helen will next be in action, along with some other Holmfirth athletes representing Yorkshire, at the UKA Inter Counties race in Birmingham on 10th March.
