A total of 43 eighth-grade students at Atchison County Community Ju nior High School are eligible for pro motion to high school, according to junior and senior high school princi pal Deanna Scherer.

Promotion ceremonies that had been scheduled this month were postponed due to con-cerns over the possible spread of COVID-19 (coron avirus). Scherer said school officials are looking at rescheduling the promotion for sometime in late July, possibly on Sunday, July 26, Scherer said.

The Kansas Scholastic Press Association has announced the winners of the 2020 State Con-test, which rewarded the best student journalism from around the state.

To earn the chance to com-pete in the State Contest, stu-dents qualified through region-al contests in February.

Despite school cancelations and unforeseen circumstanc-es, in this year’s digital state contest, students from 1A-6A schools competed in 23 differ-ent categories in three different classifications.

In the state contest, which was moved to an online for-mat this year in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, student qualifiers from across the state competed in 23 differ-ent categories in three different classifications. KSPA awarded more than 350 awards for en-tries into the contest.

From Holton High School, the following students won awards in the 3A/4A division:

*Tymber Klahr (freshman) 6th Feature Writing, Sydney Althauser (sophomore) 1st Ac-ademics photo, Ashlynn Herd (junior) 6th Photo Illustration, Kinsley Watkins (junior) 1st Student Life Photo, Allison Campbell (junior) 3rd Editing and 3rd Newswriting.

* Olivia Yingst (senior) 2nd Headline Writing, Aaran McAllister (senior) 4th Edito-rial Writing.

KSPA hosted the competi-tions digitally. Former on-site contests including copy edit-ing and sports writing moved online. Students used notes provided in prompts to inspire their writing and cartooning entries.

Royal Valley MS promotes 65 eighth-grade students

HHS journalists excel at competitionries – to an online contest that featured design, photography and online categories.

Based on the combined scores of the students from each school, KSPA names a Sweepstakes Champion for each school enrollment size.

This year, Holton finished third in 4A State Sweepstakes, be-hind Chanute and Piper.

KSPA enlists the help of jour-nalism teachers, professional journalists, university faculty members and other journalism experts to judge the entries.

Members of the Jackson Heights High School senior class of 2020 have announced their plans for their post-high school years, it was report ed.

Quinn Allen plans to attend Wash burn University to finish his associ ate’s degree, then ei-ther enter the workforce or pur-sue higher educa tion.

Zachary Armstrong plans to enter the work force, taking online classes for computer graphics.

Shayla Ball plans to attend High land Community College, later trans ferring to Kansas State University, majoring in agribusiness.

Abby Brey plans to attend Kansas State University to study communi cation sciences and disorder (speech pathol-ogy).

Jill Buck plans to take an appren ticeship at the Holton Meat Locker to learn about management and meat-cutting positions.

Andrew Coe plans to attend Washburn University, where he will major in political science and live in the Living Learn-ing Center while participating in Washburn’s leader ship pro-gram. Coe also will be work ing at Planet Fitness in Topeka.

Erin Curtis plans to attend Wichita State University to ma-jor in criminal justice, pursuing a career in criminal investiga-tive work.

Kylie Dohl has enlisted in the Kansas Air National Guard and plans to attend Kansas State University to major in nursing and health and nu trition.

Blayne Gibson plans to at-tend The University of Kansas, working to ward a bachelor’s degree in engi neering. During college he plans to intern at NASA and hopes to start full-time work after college.

Drew Holliday plans to at-tend Kansas State University, majoring in architectural engi-neering and staying at Farm-house Fraternity during his college years. He also plans to par ticipate in the ROTC pro-gram at KSU with hopes of becoming an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

Skyla Howe plans to attend Wash burn University, majoring in psy chology, with plans to work as a family therapist.

Dalton Jones plans to stay at home and help on the family farm.

Joel Kennedy plans to attend Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Neb., pursuing a degree in agricultural manage-ment and pro duction. He has expressed a desire to continue his involvement in the agri-culture industry.
