In the first century Hillel famously taught: “Al tifrosh min ha-Tzibur.” “Do not separate yourselffrom the community.” (Pirkei Avot 2:5).

Rashi, in the 11th century, believed Hillel was commenting on what to do when times are difficult for a community, when one’s impulse may be to step away. Rashi urges, “Do not separate yourself from the community when it is experiencing difficulties, so that you can be united with it when it experiences joy.” That is, do not abandon the community in its moment of vulnerability, rather be strong enough to remain steadfast and help to see the community to health and joy once again.

These teachings do not call for passivity. Standing with the community means asking our questions, expressing our concerns and frustrations, reaching in and reaching out to one another. But Hillel’s bottom line is, do not turn away. Do not turn away physically and do not turn away emotionally. Rather, turn toward.

This month of Elul and the High Holy Days which lay just on the horizon beyond it are the time for turning toward – toward the self for internal reflection, toward one another for strengthened relationships and communal ties, and toward our God for renewed commitments of faith.

Turning toward is not always easy, but it is almost always rewarding. Here is just some of the good you might see when turning toward Holy Blossom Temple.

Here, this fall, our Pre-School is expanding to reach younger students and our Senior School is expanding to reach older students. Here our Religious School is transforming in very excitingways in order to meet the needs of today’s families and our Campaign for Youth Engagement is attracting teen involvement like we haven’t seen in decades..

Here each Monday is a vibrant program for seniors; and here each Friday we welcome in thenewest generation for four consecutive Little Blossom baby music classes. Here each Tuesday aFarmer’s Tent goes up as part of the new Jewish Food movement; and on Thursdays we host, feed, and shelter the city’s most vulnerable. Here we have a congregant-led minyan twice daily; and here we have our own Jewish theatre troupe.

Here, this fall, we launch a new partnership with University of Toronto’s Jewish Studies Department; and we’ll continue, in partnership with Mount Sinai Hospital, to creatively support our congregants who care for loved ones living with dementia. Here we have Bereavement Groups for recent mourners and “Beyond the Chuppah” classes for recently engaged and recently married couples.

Here we have B’nei Mitzvah families and ufruf couples beaming on our bima, surrounded by their families, their congregation, and the sounds of tradition, joyful Shabbat after joyful Shabbat.

Your membership renewal package recently arrived at your doorstep. Now is exactly the time to reassert your commitment to our community and rediscover your pride in Toronto’s firstsynagogue. We look forward to welcoming you back into our sacred spaces for the approachingHigh Holy Days. During those most sacred of days let us turn toward one another and reinforceone another’s prayers. May the strength behind us, the goodness among us, and the visionbefore us lead Holy Blossom Temple to renewed joy and blessing. L’Shanah Tovah!

Our History Informs Our Future

Mark S. [email protected]

Holy Blossom Temple has a rich history as a leading congregation in the Reform movement. We have led in each generation since our founding in 1856. We have drawn the Jewishcommunity together in times of crisis; we led in the community response to the Six Day War andcommunity efforts to free Soviet Jews. For over

fifty years, we have created new paradigms forJewish education by strengthening the relationship of formal and informal education, actively encouraging our youth to participate in Reform Jewish camps. Our work in social action has set standards for tikun olam that many communities have followed. Our establishment of Plaut Manor and the Out of the Cold program have set the example that other congregations inToronto follow.

Our professional and lay leadership team have been leaders in the community. Our professionals have contributed their time and energy to Camp George, the URJ Youth Initiative, and the CCAR among many, many other important projects.

Our members serve and help build Reform institutions in Canada, Israel and around the world. In the wider Jewish community, our members have contributed their time and support toward sustaining a strong and vibrant Canadian Jewish community. Our members have supportedthe work of the Union for Reform Judaism, World Union for Progressive Judaism, the IsraelMovement for Progressive Judaism and served as leaders in its affiliates including Women ofReform Judaism, ARZA Canada, ARZENU and many of the committees and commissions ofthe URJ. For many of us, it has been our lifelong

involvement with Holy Blossom that has inspired us to become committed Reform Jews and active in many facets of Reform Jewish life My personal involvement began at an early age, active in the youth movement through successive roles in several areas including the Board, Micah Homes, Camp George, URJ, WUPJ, ARZENU and ARZA Canada.

Much has been written about the changes and challenges synagogue institutional life isconfronting in the Diaspora. Recent research and analysis points to a serious erosion of synagogue affiliation. Although we at Holy Blossom have spent significant effort in recent years thinking about our strategic direction, we must now rethink how we will continue to attract theunaffiliated and, at the same time, provide meaningful motivation for our current members. As we embark on our youth initiative and other projects aimed at encouraging Jewish affiliation for the next generation, it will be especially important that our community continues to support Holy Blossom Temple. Our support will set the stage for sustaining Holy Blossom as a leader in the Jewish community and most importantly motivate our young members to assume the responsibility of leading our community.

We look forward to your involvement – your discussion, your participation, and your dedication. We hope in reading the stories of our members in this Bulletin, you will be encouraged to join us as we embark on the next phase in the history of Holy Blossom.

We wish you L’shana tova.

MMy grandmother was born in New York City. She started performing from the age of five with Gus Edwards. She later became a Vaudeville performer, met George Gershwin and had her picture on the sheet music of Irving Berlin. During the war she travelled entertaining the troops. In 1920 she married, came to Toronto where her mother-in-law took her directly from the train station to Holy Blossom Temple and the rest is history. That history goes back 92 years.

Hortense Geldsaler was a staple at Holy Blossom Temple and a core member of the Sisterhood during its humble beginnings; so much so that she earned the title of “Mrs. Holy Blossom Temple”. She was elected Sisterhood president from 1946 to 1948; she was a Temple Warden and she was made Honourary President of Sisterhood in 1975.

I remember her always at the Temple, in the kitchen, at a meeting, planning an event, baking for events, performing in Temple shows. I did have the pleasure of performing with her and my mother in a Sisterhood show when I was 18. I still have the photos and the recording of that event! To say Hortense Geldsaler and not connect her to the Temple is just not possible.

My family has been part of the Temple for as long as I can remember. I, however, had been “in” and “out” of the Temple for a long time as I just could not find where I belonged. After my mother passed away, I came back for a brief time but left yet again. In 2004 I had my adult Bat Mitzvah. I joined Temple Singers but that didn’t last long. I was “out” again. However on the occasion of the Temple’s 150th, my family were Patrons for this momentous event. How could they be Patrons and I not be a member! I joined again! But this time, I didn’t leave. I was determined to find where I belonged. I needed community. I re-joined the Temple Singers because music is in my blood and a few years later, I was asked to join Sisterhood.

My first thought was “Sisterhood? My Grandmother’s Sisterhood? Do I have to be in the kitchen? I don’t cook, I microwave. Do I have to wear gloves and nice dresses? I wear leggings and cowboy boots! Don’t even ask me to wear a hat! Not happening! Do I have to drink tea? I hate tea; I drink lattes! Aren’t I too young to be in Sisterhood?” They were nice enough to invite me and I didn’t want to be rude so I decided to check it out.

Two years later and I’m still here! I’m still in my cowboy boots and drinking my lattes. However, these few years have been very

insightful and rewarding. Sisterhood is on the move in a new direction and embarking on a new initiative. We are re-inventing ourselves, re-branding if you will. To start, last month we met with a facilitator who led us in a day of reflection and future planning. We want our programs and events to reflect our membership, to be current with the issues that matter to women today, to you, our membership.

As we embark on this new initiative, we will be blogging our progress and invite you to follow us on our journey. If you would like to become involved, even in a small way, we invite you to join this wonderful group of women in any way you feel comfortable doing so. If you are like me and are looking for some small way to become involved in our Temple Community or even a big way, this is a wonderful time to join us as we transition into the future. Your support, thoughts and input are so important to the process.

This was my Grandmother’s Sisterhood. It’s mine now but I learned from the best!

Holy Blossom Temple

One weekday morning in May 2003, after Shacharit services, Brotherhood President Harvey Kerpneck asked me if I’d like to play baseball on Sundays with the Holy B’s. This was my introduction to Brotherhood. I enjoyed playing that summer and was impressed with Harvey’s energy and spirit. He not only organized the team’s re-entry into the Inter Synagogue BaseballLeague and shlepped all the equipment and refreshments to games, but he also fielded and went up to bat in every inning...this a man in his 70’s. Unfortunately, Harvey passed away in May of 2004, before the start of the next baseball season.

During the time of mourning for Harvey I met the active members of Holy Blossom Temple Brotherhood who for years had been preparing breakfasts for the congregation, helping buildCamp George, gifting Plaut Commentaries to B’nei Mitzvot, sponsoring study groups and running programs for Jewish men (and women) at our Temple.

I was totally surprised (and, of course, honoured) after Shavuot services in 2004 when a few of the “boys” told me they had “decided” I should become President of Brotherhood. I said, “Iaccept, as long as no one tells my wife.” Fortunately, both my wife and my son were very supportive when I quickly told them the news.

For four years I made every effort to follow in the giant footsteps of Past-Presidents like Richard Lorie, Alan Gardner, Michael Cole, Fred Metter, Howard Roger and of course Harvey. During my term I attended every biennial of the North American Federation of Temple Brotherhoods (now Men of Reform Judaism) as well as the URJ biennials. I learned how important Brotherhood is to the life of Holy Blossom, especially in setting a good example for our children of men worshiping, studying and having fun in a Jewish context.

I still play on the Holy B’s, only now I’m also the shlepper of the equipment and the refreshments. My hopes are that Holy Blossom Temple Brotherhood will flourish and grow and that the young men of the Temple will “step up to bat” to lead this essential part of our congregation.

“What does Brotherhood do?”

I smile when I hear that question, then hesitate. How long an answer do you want?

The short answer: We’re the men’s club of Holy Blossom. We offer programs that serve the men of the congregation, the congregation as a whole, and the wider Jewish community.

The long answer: We’re active on many fronts. Our most popular activity is our Sunday breakfast club, open to men and women. We’ve scrambled eggs and sliced bagels for more years than any other group in Temple.

We feed the body, but we also nourish the mind and the soul. At breakfast meetings and evening programs we’ve heard from journalists and historians; poets and musicians; film makers and biographers; book reviewers, editors and publishers; political activists and humanitarian advocates – all speaking about matters of Jewish interest or from a Jewish point of view.

We’ve learned about the history of Holy Blossom and of the Toronto Jewish Community. We’ve heard holocaust memoirs, stories from Israel, and accounts of Jewish experiences from Argentina, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan.

We’ve listened to representatives of organizations that serve the homeless, children with special needs, and aging seniors. We’ve learned about meditation and stress management.

We run a popular photography group, attended by members of Holy Blossom and other synagogues. Our Brotherhood Study

Group studies with Rabbi Stroh. Our slo-pitch baseball team, The Holy B’s, plays in the ISBL – Inter-Synagogue Baseball League.

We’re politically engaged. During federal and provincial elections we’ve hosted all candidates meetings. We have a web page where visitors can find links to news from Israel, then find the email address of their member of Parliament.

Before they begin their studies, every bar and bat mitzvah youth receives a Plaut Torah Commentary as a gift from Brotherhood. We’ve provided drivers for HABSTY’s Bagel Box program. We’ve given financial assistance to Camp George and to our Religious School for student trips to Israel. We’ve commissioned new music for the Holy Blossom siddur.

We’re active in Temple governance. We appoint a representative to the Temple nominating committee. Our Brotherhood President sits on the Temple Board. We’ve collected surveydata and made contributions to the Temple’s strategic planning process.

We’ve won awards from MRJ – Men of Reform Judaism – for programming and communications. We are, we hope, role models for the next generation of Jewish men of active participation in Jewish life.

“What will we do next?” That depends, in part, on you. Please join us in creating and attending new and engaging programs for 5773.

Holy Blossom in Israel 1980s Holy Blossom in Israel 1990s

me to responsi teaching

During my years of growing up in Boston, Israel was neither a state nor a topic of conversation!

Saying “next year in Jerusalem” at our family Seder was the only time I heard about Israel (Palestine) until I went to Religious School in a classic reform temple. Even then, it was barely mentioned - this was in the 1930s and 40s - before the horrors of the Holocaust began to unfold. My family didn’t seem to know nor be a part of what was happening outside of the United States. But by the middle of the 1940’s that changed and slowly I became more conscious of what changes were taking place in the world.

Did I do anything about these changes? Not really! Only after moving to Toronto in 1956 and joining Holy Blossom Temple did I seem to evolve into “another person”.

My children’s attendance at Religious School, under the direction of Heinz Waschauer, and his subsequent convincing me to become a Religious School teacher, were mainly responsible for the “new me”! Shortly after starting myteaching assignment, I was presented with the Norman Grant

Education Award which allowed me to study for a month in Israel with reform educators and learn about Israel in depth. From then on, I knew that Israel (the land and the people) would be a part of who I am.

I cannot imagine, and wonder, how my parents and grandparents would react today. Probably in disbelief - but I would hope - with a great sense of pride.

Over the years, I saw Holy Blossom realize the need to increase our understanding and knowledge of the importance of Israel in our lives, and so along with a strong Israel curriculum in our Religious School, an Israel Committee was formed to further these goals. In my youth, who would have ever believed that this would happen!

Now that I have retired as a teacher, being active on the Temple’s Israel committee has given me the opportunity to carry on the ideals that are not only important to me, but important in Jewish life today.

Promoting, developing and sponsoring programs about Israel, as well as encouraging travel to Israel, has put our Temple in the forefront of “moving forward” and I am proud to be a part of it!

In 1999, Rabbi Yael Splansky started the Bikur Cholim Committee and invited me to join. We attended three evenings of study and lectures on the subject and the committee began to work, visiting and calling congregants who were ill.

Rabbi Splansky knew I had some ‘personal experience’. My son Jacob, z”l, coped with illness, in hospital and at home, for much of his short life. We became all too familiar with many doctors’ offices, as well as wards and clinics at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Through those years our attachment to Holy Blossom grew.

I clearly recall Rabbi Jim Prosnit coming to visit us at Sick Kids in 1981 (Jacob was about 7 months old) on Rosh Hashanah. He had come from services, and I thought, on this busy day, here he was, not only to see us, but to bring with him hope and prayers for a good year.

In June of 1987, we celebrated Jacob’s naming – the b’rit milah had to be delayed and done in surgery for medical reasons. We came for Kabbalat Shabbat where Rabbi David Azen conducted a little ceremony. He did mention how much time Jacob had spent in hospital. Jacob interrupted by saying, “I’ve been through a lot”.

In August of 1993, Jacob had a bone marrow transplant (his brother Benjamin was the donor). Rabbi Sharon Sobel took me for a walk outside the hospital. It was a hot day and she was wearing heels and when I hesitated, saying it would be too uncomfortable for her, she said it was absolutely fine. Whenthe High Holidays arrived, even with the reverse isolation restrictions, Rabbi Sharon (Jacob called her “my rabbi”) returned with her big shofar as promised and ‘scrubbed in’. Jacob was waiting to greet her, hospital pyjamas on the bottom, but blazer, shirt and tie on top.

Jacob attended Religious School when he was well, and loved it. We were also part of the founding cohort for Shabbat Family Service and hence, a fondness for Judy and David Gershon and Rabbi John Moscowitz developed.

His last months in Sick Kids toward the end of 1995, were very difficult. Rabbi Marmur waited patiently for me outside the ICU... Rabbi Plaut drove down one Friday afternoon (he reminded us that he no longer made visits) and while Jacob dozed off and on, we lit candles and Rabbi Plaut said the blessings... Bambi Katz, then principal of the Religious School, arrived on a snowy evening with an arm load of cards and posters that the students had made to cheer him. We put lots of them up on the wall.

Presently, I am on the executive committee of our large group of Bikur Cholim volunteers, who visit, telephone, drive, make soup, and send meals and plants. In short, wonderful support is given to those who are unwell or frail, shut in or lonely, and to those families who are in crisis. Our past chairs, Pam Albert and Valerie Fish led and taught through their example, kindness, and wisdom. Our new chair, Liz Tarshis, has firmly taken the reins.I do this because I am able to, it is not hard to do, and I understand, as our tradition teaches, that it is an “obligation without measure, whose reward, too, is without measure, in this world and in the World to Come”. I do it to honour Jacob’s memory.

IHBT Religious School:R e s p o n d i n g t o t h e C h a n g i n g n e e d s o f Yo u n g F a m i l i e s

IEach year as the summer begins to wind down and the new school year seems like just a stone’s throw away, we, like every parent begin the painstaking task of deciding which of the many programming options we will register for (and which ones our child might actually get a coveted spot in!). Knowingthat we want our children’s emotional, physical, spiritual, and social needs met, we strive to find the perfect balance. One thing that has remained clear to us is that our children’s connection to Holy Blossom Temple is a priority. As educators we believe that participation in our Religious School programis vital to our children’s Jewish identity. We want them to feel as though Holy Blossom is one of their many homes – complemented by our own home and their summer home at URJ Camp George.

Growing up in the Religious School myself, set me on the path for developing my own Reform Jewish identity – it was because of the school experience that I became a student teacher, a youth grouper in HABSTY, a camper at a URJ Camp, and am currently still engaged as Religious School teacher. The Religious School experience led me on my path to become an educator both in the formal and informal world. I would be only too proud to see my own children follow this path and credit their experience to the love and support of their family, friends, and Temple community.

Looking Forward – Notes from the Religious Education committee Many exciting changes will be implemented in the new school year. Our younger children, in Grades 1 and 2 will have an option of attending school on either Sundays or Wednesdays. We anticipate this flexibility will ease balancing family priorities and commitments and managing busy schedules. Another change is for our Grade 6 students. They will be integrated into our Senior School program on Mondayevening. There, they will interact with our students in Grade 7 (Bar/Bat Mitzvah) through Grade 10 (Confirmation). This new initiative will offer an exciting opportunity to learn in their core and Hebrew language classes, but also participate in our community through acts of gemilut chasadim, studying and learning about helping others through text study and actual action throughout the community. Our older students will continue to serve as mentors to our younger students; encouraging them through their words and their actions.

The Religious Education committee will continue to consult our parent population in the coming year. Your input is critical. Many of you responded to a survey we sent last June. The survey gave us some interesting information about priorities when it comes to children’s Jewish education. Through the Fall, we hope to gather additional feedback through interviews and focus groups. The learning that ariseswill help guide our decisions and actions to refine and improve our Holy Blossom Temple Religious School. If you are interested in getting involved in the process; contact Debbie Spiegel at [email protected].

Since it welcomed its first guests 16 winters ago, HBT’s Out of the Cold has evolved dramatically, and has seen thousands of volunteers enthusiastically giving their time, and thousands of guests happily accepting our care.

The first night, when I ventured down, I wanted to see for myself exactly what we do. I went in as an employee of Holy Blossom, never thinking how that short visit would influence my next 9 years.

But after that first evening, of watching the volunteers interacting with our guests and seeing our guests’ gratitude for the volunteers,

I realized I was hooked. And that one night changed my

life forever.

I have made many new friends volunteering. Over the years

I have recruited my family and friends who all continue to support

the program every Thursday night from November until April.

Our up to 120 guests are offered a nutritious meal, nursing services, and a warm

place to sleep for the night, as well as clothing and other basic necessities in a manner that respects

our guests’ dignity, self-respect and sense of worth.

We begin the evening as soon as the guests arrive, waiting patiently in line to come into the Temple. While in line we offer them hot drinks and assorted snacks. As soon as the doors open they are greeted by friendly faces as they settle down at a table for a hot meal. Our volunteers serve

hot soup, fresh salad and then an entrée of chicken or beef, potatoes and vegetables, and then a dessert along with fresh fruit.

We also have live music for all our enjoyment throughout dinner including fundraising events like the Kenny Munshaw/Beverley Mahood Coffee House Concert, which raised much-needed dollars that helped us to meet our budget requirements.

After dinner, the room is cleaned and cleared; donuts and coffee urns appear. People read magazines, play bingo or just socialize. Those who leave are given a bus token and a packed lunch. Those staying overnight set up mats on the floor; they receive a cooked breakfast in the morning.

Like invisible angels, many volunteers work entirely behind the scenes. Some come in to scrub pots, make bagged lunches, clean tables, serve dinners, socialize, act as security and the list goes on and on. Out of the Cold is my volunteering passion and I can’t wait for our next season to begin!

As we plan for the 2012/13 year we are always looking for ways to improve the effectiveness of the program while continuing to meet the needs of the community. We are also investigating additional cooperative ventures with Ve’ahavta and other efforts that will benefit the community at large, making HBT’s Out of the Cold a key figure in the fight against homelessness.

However, as with each year, looking forward we face new challenges. If HBT’s Out of the Cold is to continue to be a source of shelter to the hundreds of homeless guests we serve, we’ll need help.

To make a donation in support of OOTC, please contact us at 416.789.3291 Ext 265. If you would like to volunteer for the 2012-2013 season, please contact me, Shelly Berenbaum, at the Temple, 416.789.3291 ext. 233 or email [email protected]. Our volunteer sign-up night is currently scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. Come out and sign up – we need you!

Out of the Cold is my volunteering passion and I can’t wait for our next season to begin!

Holy Blossom Temple

That thought surfaced as I chanted my Bat Mitzvah parsha. I was nervous and had started off on a rocky note.

Figuring that I had nothing else to lose, I gave it my all - my voice took off and soared through the air of the Eisendrath. Gaining confidence, I eventually finished—invigorated, and ready to eat.

While my Bat Mitzvah was a memorable experience, it was also the gateway through which I discovered the Temple Singers—no, not the Broadway act—but the schedule choir conducted by Cantor Beny Maissner. After completing my Bat Mitzvah studies, I was challenged to find a way to “give back” to our community.

Coming from a non-practicing religious background, I knew next to nothing about liturgical music, tunes, or prayers; not the order of musical compositions during a Shabbat service or any other service for that manner. Joining seventeen years ago as a choral “freshman,” I was clueless. Thanks to the Temple Singers I began to grasp the intricacies of liturgical music as well as of Beny, our fearless leader. One can’t mention Temple Singers without including Beny.

Through the years he has taught us a great many “tunes” in all sorts of languages - Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino and Spanish. Beny has been more than a conductor.

He has explained the meanings and biblical origins of phrases we’ve sung, making it easier to sing with empathy. And of course, Temple Singers would be diminished without Nadia – our accompanist, our taskmaster. If Nadia says something’s wrong while we’re in the throws of singing, no one can argue with her - not even Beny.

We’ve performed at many events, at Holy Blossom and in other venues, most notably Koerner Hall. We’ve sung on our own as well as with other choirs such as Lachan, church choirs and of course Holy Blossom’s own

Temple Choir.

What does the future hold? Well, you will still be able to hear us on alternate Shabbat mornings. We will still be rehearsing every Sunday morning from 10 –12 noon throughout the year in the Sanctuary.

And this October the Musical Heritage Committee presents Joshua Nelson in concert and

we will be his backup singers. For next year’s Slichot and

second day Rosh HaShanah services we will be singing new

material. And for Pesach we will be presenting Srul Glick’s

“Hagaddah” and Zimriah songfest, also in the spring.

It’s been a challenging, invigorating and rewarding trip so far and I’m looking forward to many more years of music-making with my Holy Blossom friends.
