FESTIVAL OF THE REFORMATION Sunday, October 26

What is this thing we call the Reformation?

Historically, on the eve of All Saints’ Day, October 31, 1517, a young Roman Catholic Priest named Martin Lu-ther posted on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, a list of 95 theses, or statements, and requested a meeting of the church leaders to discuss and debate the substance of these 95 theses concerning church practic-es. Luther desired that the church would reform its prac-tices to be more in keeping with the Word of God as con-tained in the Bible.

A few weeks back we listened together to the words of St. Paul in his letter to the church in Rome. He said; “Let your love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.” Playing around with the Greek I found that the word oft translated as “contribute” can also be translated as “participate”. You may recall in my sermon that I highlighted this difference. Well, three weeks have passed and I find myself continuing to dwell on this

one little translation choice. What does it mean to participate in the Body of Christ? What does it mean to have “membership” in that holistic sense that St. Paul is calling to? What does it mean to love God, love people and serve? Well, last Sunday at the Fall Kickoff we saw a glimpse of it. Gathering around tables for food made by many members, we listened to the myriad of ways Holy Cross tries to connect people into the Kingdom-building work we are up to. Outside, our young ones squished grapes into juice that is, at the very moment, turning into wine. Wine that when blessed in the midst of our communal worship bears Christ to all who drink of it. Folks went home, papers in hand, bellies full to contemplate how they might participate this year. Wednesday, our choirs met, yes it is a lot of fun, but they also meet to do something much more important. They give their time and voices so that when we raise our voices in worship our voices are brought together. Their leadership allows those who do not have the gift of singing to sing out praises to God without having to focus on their own singing. The choir truly allows us to enter into God’s presence without being self-conscious. Right now, folks are busy in their home workshops, plying their passion in differing media, wood, fabric, paint, to create the objects that will allow children to learn of God’s sacred story as we prepare for Godly Play’s debut this January. In a few weeks, folks will learn how to turn malted barley, yeast, water and hops into beer. This may not seem like work that builds up membership and participation in the Body of Christ but it is. If you could listen into the conversations that are being had, the statements being made, “You guys do that at your church?”, “Sure, I’d love to learn how to brew. You said that is at your church?!” People who normally would not darken the doors of our building with their presence are going to come for 5 weeks and be in our space, with our people, and hopefully realize that Church is not quite what they thought it was. This is just a sampling of how we are opening up ways to be more than someone who at-tends church, to be someone who participates in the needs of the saints, who is a member in the fullest sense. To become someone who loves God, loves people and serves. This begs the question, “How will you participate?” Over the next 8 weeks we are going to lift up that question, and hopefully help you find a way to answer it. In your mailbox and inbox you will find the first of these efforts - our annual stewardship letter, though this year there is a twist. Then in the upcoming weeks there will be four more big ways:

What about Faith on Five Mile?

Here are the facts and the back story:

Bell Creek Church, the offspring of Oak Point Church in South Lyon, has been meeting for some time in Churchill High School. Last spring they sent letters to Livonia churches inquiring as to whether said church might pursue the sale of its building to them. We received such a letter. We said no. Our sister ELCA congregation, Faith Lutheran Church on Five Mile (directly one mile south) explored it further.

When we heard they were pursuing a sale of their building, leaders of Holy Cross sent them an invitation and a challenge for an ELCA partnership in mission to the East Livonia/Redford

community. We asked: - How might you and your God-given gifts join ours to expand and grow this mission to which God has called us? - Is the Holy Spirit leading us to explore with you a merger for the sake of mission? - Do you resonate with the mission, vision, and ministry priorities outlined below? (We included our mission, vision, core values, statement of welcome, and a summary of our ministry priorities.) - If so, what could that mean?

On August 24, Faith voted in a specially called congregational meeting, 77% to 23%, 1. to “pursue the sale of their building” 2. to “pursue a merger with Holy Cross”

At this writing, the process of exploring this partnership has barely begun. Pastor Dana and Pastor Carr have met once. Pastor Dana, Pastor Ben, Cantor Michael, Pastor Carr and Bishop Don Kreiss have met once.

The Bishop has asked for six people from each church on an exploration team. This exploration team would come up with a recommendation to each church's council.

Council would present a recommendation to the congregation for a vote. This team is being assembled as this is being written.

We do have some things firmly on the calendar. These are dates when Pastor Carr will either be on vacation or undergoing back surgery and recovering: - September 28 Pastor Ben will be preaching and presiding at Faith. - October 26 Faith will join us at Holy Cross for Reformation Sunday worship. - November 2 Pastor Ben will again be preaching and presiding at Faith. - November 9 Pastor Dana will preach and preside at Faith.

Be assured your leaders will keep you as well informed as possible as we explore the possibility of a new chapter in our life together in mission! If you have questions, at this point please direct them to Jeff Hatteberg or Vern Adams. Let us move forward in faith, trusting that the message of the holy cross of Christ is at our center, leading and guiding us.

Reformation continued

What started as an academic debate – mostly over the selling of the Grace of God – touched off a chain reaction that resulted in the events that we now call the Protestant Reformation.

What does this thing we call the Reformation mean for us today?

We are reminded and challenged through Luther’s work that reformation is not simply a one-time historical event, but rather that the Body of Christ we call Church is always in need of reform and renewal in the light of the Gospel. So on this Sunday . . .

. . . we will pray for church unity, for the proclamation of God's Word, and for a church that is open to reform and the guidance of the Holy Spirit;

. . . we will use the liturgical color red to signify the continuing work of the Spirit to renew the church;

. . . we will worship with members of Faith Lutheran Church, Livonia, at Holy Cross at 10 a.m.;

. . . we will share a meal with the members of Faith following 10 a.m. worship celebrating our common calling to renewal and mission in Southeast Michigan.

More actively fulfills the mandate to disciple believers. From what I can see there isn’t a lot of mature, adult level learning and discipleship going on in most churches. The GPS process is real. It meets people where they are and it encourages them to intentionally move into a deeper relationship with Christ and the church. (Dawn M)

Godly Play continued

Ironically, although surveys show that volunteers don’t have time for preparation and training, Godly Play and similar programs are seeing success in churches that train their volunteers. According to responses, adult volunteers find Godly Play spiritually enriching for themselves. Learning the stories and attending workshops helps them tap into their own spirituality and into knowledge of biblical stories, sacraments and liturgical language that they may not have learned as children. Godly Play also engages a variety of senses, which helps children experience God’s story not only visually and orally but through touch, movement and even smell. In today’s world of over-stimulation and overscheduling, both children and adults are eager for a chance to slow down, quiet themselves and absorb the wonder of God’s presence. Traditional approaches do not offer this type of faith-formation experience, which may explain why Godly Play is steadily gaining in popularity. Our goal is to begin offering Godly Play at Holy Cross in January. This will require a community wide effort! Here are ways you can be involved:

Train to be a storyteller.

Train to be a “door person.”

Share your talents in wood working and crafts to help build and assem-ble the materials.

Share monetary gifts to help fund scholarships for training and supplies.

Offer “behind the scenes” support. Save the weekend of November 8-10 for training. On Thursday evening, November 7, we plan to have one of the trainers come to Holy Cross to offer an introduction to Godly Play. Jack Keck has already begun to learn a Godly Play story and shared it with our council and other leaders.

Jack will be sharing a Godly Play story in the conference room off of the narthex at 9:15 am Sunday October 3rd. Grab a cup of coffee from the Abbey and bring it over for a sample. Sign up on Pastor Dana’s office door if you want to be a friend of Godly Play and help us get this up and running. Send an email to pastordana@holycrosslivonia.org if you can attend training Friday evening November 7-Sunday afternoon November 9.

God’s People Doing God’s Work

I want to share with you my experience last August with Life Remodeled, a non-profit organization spearheading work in Detroit, organized by Chuck Gaidica. I was a bit apprehensive about going to do work in this Detroit neighborhood, especially when this area had their fair share of gang vio-lence for the better part of 15 years. But it was my daughter Lindsay who got me involved. She works for the Chrysler Corporation and according to her they have to participate in a program such as this at least twice a year. We had our usual phone conversation and right at the end she said, “By the way, Dad, I volunteered you for the Cody H.S. project.” .My reaction? "Gee Thanks!”

When I arrived we were assembled into teams of 20 with a coordinator. Our particular project was to assemble 60 flower boxes for the neighborhoods. What I didn't know was that these boxes were like guideposts or beacons for the children to get to school. Our team consisted of mainly Chrysler employees so we had that assembly line mentality going on and we were told it would take forever. It was done in 4 hours.

We had to periodically go to get lumber at Cody H.S. as we were using an old vacant bank as our area. When I took my first ride to get lumber I was seeing God at work. Every neighborhood we drove through had at least 70 to 100 people sawing down limbs, pulling weeds, and cutting grass. I was in awe. I marveled the idea of seeing God's army at work. We had buses from Oak Point Church, and Greater Grace Temple just to name a few. As far as corporations, General Motors was present along with Roush Industries, Weingartz Lawn Care and Chrysler. It was a massive amount of volunteers coming together to put pride back in a community that has fallen to some harder times.

Would I be willing to do this all over again? YES! In the back of my mind I am reminded of my church’s (Holy Cross) mission: "God’s People Doing God’s Work!” Thank You!

A Lay Caregiver’s Guide to Surviving Long-Term Illness Care

Stress is high for those caring for persons with illness and disability over a long period of time. This has a tremendous impact on the care-giver’s health, psychological stability and spiritual life. How does one cope when there is no relief in sight? SCC staff member Fr. Rob Kerr, Ph.D., L.L.P., L.P.C., is a priest in the Episcopal Church, a Li-censed Counselor, and has been the primary care-giver for his father, who suffered a traumatic brain injury after a drunk driver struck his dad while bicycling. Fr. Rob has learned through experi-ence, education, support and personal counseling how to navigate this life situation and relation-ship with his dad. The focus of Fr. Kerr’s presentation will be on the sharing of ideas and insights with those who are care-givers.
