MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

16th Sunday in Ordinary time A My brothers and sisters in the Lord! We live in a world where many of us listen to gossip and we believe it to be true. The gossip spreads and friendships and relationships are broken. When you think about it, realize how important it is to wait before acting or speaking over zealously. This is what Jesus is speaking about in today’s Gospel message. We see that Jesus faced a good deal of criticism because He mixed with the wrong sort of people, tax collectors, and prostitutes. The Pharisees

were constantly asking Him why He did not observe the law and get rid of those people who were not pure. But we see that Jesus did not change His behavior for He knew that some of these sinners would eventually change and repent. After all, He was like a doctor seeking out those who were sick. In today’s message, Jesus gives them an answer in the parable of the weeds. Although a man had sown good seeds, his servants told him that weeds had appeared. The man questions where they had come from. His only presumption was that an enemy had sown them. We see that his servants are ready to spring into action and pull out and destroy the weeds but the farmer is more prudent. He knows that weeds and wheat are quite similar in appearance and if you start pulling up the weeds you may also destroy the wheat. He advises patience. He tells them to wait until harvest time when both the wheat and weeds are mature, and then the reapers can cut them and divide them into separate bundles. Later in the passage, Jesus gives an explanation of the parable. He explains each point: the Son of Man is the sower of the good seed and the field is the world; the weeds are the subjects of the evil one. He makes it fit into the situation that at the end of the world, when the final harvest comes, the angels will separate the agents of the devil who will face the final judgement. Here the emphasis is not so much on the delay but the certainty that there will be a final judgement, which will bring justice. Jesus makes it very clear that the world is not an innocent place. There will always be evil at work in it and that will frustrate the growth of the kingdom. Even in church communities there will always be mixture of good and bad. Christians should be scandalized but not surprised that sin can exist in the Church. How should it be dealt with? Sometimes immediate action needs to be taken to root out a poisonous cancer; there is no room for compromising with scandal. But there are other occasions when God’s forbearance must be recognized and, in a sense, we are called to imitate it. Sometimes it may be wiser to wait and not judge too quickly. There are zealous people in every community who want to act now and root out what they see as sinners or their influence. But, as Jesus shows, both on an individual and community level, we may do more harm than good by rushing in with our hasty judgments. Better to wait, allowing for change and repentance. This is not a false tolerance of sin but, rather, a situation that can occur in families and in parish communities, and which needs patience. Jesus teaches us to have a deep faith that God is in control and that God can bring good out of the most unpromising situations. In the end there will be a judgment and God will bring about justice. Peace, Fr. Joe

THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God’s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God’s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God’s might, but is a direct result of God’s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all

people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God’s mercy, power, and love.

Ethically Acceptable Stem Cell Research Sometimes it is wrongly said that the Catholic Church opposes stem cell research. In fact, the Church

supports ethically responsible stem cell research, while opposing any research that exploits or destroys human embryos (US Catholic Conference of Bishops).

Adult stem cells have already helped thousands of patients, and new clinical uses expand almost weekly. Adult stem cells come from adult tissue, umbilical cord and placenta blood and can be retrieved without harming the donor. Umbilical cord and placenta donations can help treat people with a myriad of ailments, including spinal cord injuries, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.

Umbilical cord and placenta blood donation to NJ’s two public cord blood banks will provide more options for people with medical conditions curable through stem cell transplant and will increase the research material available to New Jersey’s top medical researchers. The Elie Katz Umbilical Cord Blood Program in Paramus (1-866-SAVCORD) and Coriell Institute for Medical Research in Camden (1-856-757-9718) are two facilities that collect, store, study and research public umbilical cord and placenta blood donations. Both of these organizations are agents of the New Jersey Public Umbilical and Placenta Blood Bank which covers the cost of cord blood donation and storage. Information is also available at your local hospitals, especially the Catholic hospitals of New Jersey, which are especially committed to this initiative.

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the deceased, or is offered for a very special intention. On the

3rd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M.

During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days.

If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket (see form). Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows.
