PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

Led by the spirit and example of the Holy Family, our parish community embraces as its mission the salvation of all people. Rooted in the celebration of the Eucharist, we go forth to serve, to educate, and to live daily the message of Jesus Christ.

DEAR HOLY FAMILY PARISHIONERS:

Isn’t it great to celebrate the life of a hero, someone we can look up to & emulate in our lives? It may be those courageous firefighters & police personnel, always there to risk their lives for us. Or, it may be someone who has inspired countless children to read or to be compassionate citizens. It may be a person who has worked tirelessly for justice, peace, or equality. Just so, in our faith we have heroes---they are called SAINTS! They are the men & women who have given their lives in defense of the faith or in service to the Church, or worked to better the lives of others. This week in our liturgy we celebrate several great saints----On Mon., Oct. 17th we celebrate St. Ignatius, an early saint of the Church. He gave his very life defend-ing our faith in the tumultuous life of the early Church. So many were being persecuted & put to death because of their belief in the Risen Lord. His life calls us to see if we would be willing to undergo persecution, torture, & suf-fering to uphold our belief in Jesus. On Tuesday we celebrate St. Luke, one of the four evangelists. He was a doctor who was called to write a gospel of compassion & social justice. In his gospel, Je-sus cures many, reaches out to the poor, & upholds the dignity of the disadvan-taged. Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, the book recounting the begin-ning of the Church through the mission of the Apostles. His life can call us to see how we reach out to the poor & needy. And, if we carry on the acts of the apostles today. On Wednesday we celebrate St. John Brebeuf, Isaac Jogues, & their compan-ions. They were the first martyrs of the North American continent. Isaac & John were both Jesuits & missionaries to Can-ada in the 17th century. Their compan-ions joined them in their mission. All were martyred by various Indian tribes. Their lives call us to see how we treat the Native Americans of today. On Saturday we celebrate the Feast of St. Pope John Paul II. He was one of the longest reigning Popes in the history of our Church---from 1978-2005. He was the first non-Italian pope elected in over 450 years. He was instrumental in the fall of Communism in Poland. He was the most traveled pope ever, bringing the message of Jesus Christ to many lands & peoples. His life shows how we are to bring our faith to all those we meet. May you have a saintly week, living your life in the tradition of our saints who are our heroes for us to follow. ---- FATHER JOE

YEAR OF MERCY REFLECTION FOR OCT. 15/16

Persistent prayer. You know that person, don’t you? One so relentless, he does not yield, he does not back down? She makes the case and does not let it drop? Per-sistence personified. God invites us, invites me to take this attitude to prayer. “Pray always without becoming weary.” Pray not just for myself. Pray, too, for the needs of others. Do not give up.

• For what shall I pray today?

• For whom shall I pray this week? • Can I put it all in God’s care – and with my helping

hands?
