The Power of Prayer Through Simbang Gabi
Keep Praying!
There are many Novenas that you are welcome to try-out, they don’t always correspond to specific days.
Stay tuned, we will be hearing from more parishioners about other forms of prayer and their experiences with them. Hope you are inspired to pray.
Sometimes we are at a loss how to say a prayer and wonder how we get the attention of our Lord to hear us. I have often wondered how we really know that God is talking to us. Yet, I believe in the power of prayer and have witnessed so many instances in life where this has been proven to be true.
A startling example is observing the Filipino tradition known as Simbang Gabi, 9 days of early Mass from Dec. 16-24. I find this tradition very ben-eficial to rekindle the spirituality and the sacredness of Advent. When a handful of Filipinos introduced this tradition to Holy Family in 2005, we never imagined that it would be embraced by all ethnicities in our faith community. I asked friends why they patronized the tradition, Cindy A. said - “Attending the Masses has become the highlight of our Christmas celebration. It makes us closer to Jesus and makes our Christmas Celebra-tion more special.” Claudia B. shares “Simbang Gabi represents the true meaning of Christmas.” Claire H. notes “I feel my faith and prayer life has grown because of the beauty of these special nine days.”
This Advent Novena before Christmas is a period of private or public prayer to make special petitions, obtain special graces, or to implore spe-cial favors. Also, it helps us prepare for the festive, yet solemn celebration of the birth of the Infant Jesus.
I remember somebody asking me what Simbang Gabi is all about. I couldn’t explain to him exactly what it is or what it does to us unless you experience it. I asked him to try to come even for one day. He did and from then on he has never stopped coming back year after year. It is a rare experience, from a small sacrifice of waking up early in the morning, go to Mass, enjoy the community bonding during fellowship that follows. These are just the way of embracing the rich Catholic tradition the Filipino Com-munity has introduced to our parish. It is a beautiful way of preparing for Christmas and nothing compared to what Jesus did for all humanity. So, I invite all of you who haven’t tried attending our Advent Novena to join us this year and you will be amazed as to how it can transform you spiritual-ly.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last Saturday was indeed a day full of grace for our Holy Family community. (See picture on page 5) We had 115 faithful participants on the Holy Doors of Mercy pilgrim-
age trip that began at 8:00AM. We first stopped at the Mother Church in our Diocese—St. Joseph Cathedral. There, we celebrated Mass for the Feast of The Transfiguration of our Lord and spent sometime for personal reflection as well as touring the Cathedral. We then left for Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the pastor, Fr. Gerardo Menchaca. “Fr. G” and his assistant took time to give us a brief history of the Church and many of us learned that Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is the home of the renowned civil rights leader Cesar Chavez. We then gathered in the chapel and prayed according to the guidance to ob-tain the indulgence. Our Lady of Peace Church was our last stop. After we prayed together to obtain the indulgence, we spent an hour for lunch and to cultivate fellowship. We were back at Holy Family at 1:30PM. Those who attended the pilgrimage trip had only awe-inspiring words to describe their gracious and uplifting experiences. Many still feel over-whelmed and moved by the beauty of the experience. In short, it was a day filled with grace, love, joy and fellowship. Thanks be to God for such a blessing and thanks to Ruth Spencer Evangelization Fund that paid for all the cost. For those who haven’t had a chance to obtain an indulgence recently, please heed the opportunity before the Year of Mercy ends on November 20th.
On another note, since we announced our capital campaign for our five projects four weeks ago; thanks be to God and to 35 families who already graciously and generously donated, our donation totals to $113,326. The-se families have given us a great start. What a blessing! We now only need $36,674 to reach our goal. Therefore, I am counting on your gra-cious help to succeed. I understand that not everyone is able to help finan-cially; your contribution of prayers are beneficial as well. Please help our Church according to your means that God has given to you. Please know that giving is better than receiving, especially when we do it out of love for Christ and His Church.
Please mail your donation to our office before the end of August or you can drop your donation off during the second collection on August 27-28 weekend. Please make checks payable to “Holy Family Parish”, on the memo line please indicate “Five Projects”.
I am deeply appreciative for whichever way you can help. Your sacrifi-cial gift surely will enable us to serve Christ better and help our commu-nity grows in faith, love and charity.
May God continue to shower His blessings upon you and all the good works that you do in His name. God bless,
Fr. Andrew Vu Nguyen
