PRAYER AND REFLECTION January 12, 2020 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord The baptism of Jesus
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We will hear in the Gospel that Jesus was baptized by his cousin John, and we hear the voice of God saying, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.” Let us pray for the gift to live our lives so that we hear these words spoken in our hearts — that we are loved and pleasing to our God. On this day we celebrate the baptism of Jesus, let us remember the promises of our baptism — among them, to intercede for the world. This is the duty of every Christian, and so we pray.
For peace everywhere: for an end to war, to violence, to bullying, to cruel behavior and hurtful speech. For an end to all that makes this world less like heaven … we pray,
For the church: that our leaders and all Christians may witness to the values, principles and ideals that Jesus preached … we pray,
For our young people: for their formation in the faith and for all that they need to choose a healthy, holy, peaceful, productive path for their lives … we pray,
For those who are sick or suffering: for those who are frightened for their future; for those lonely in nursing homes; for those who are facing their last days and praying for a peaceful death … we pray,
We pray for those who have died … (names). And for all who mourn the passing of a loved one … we pray, PRAYER: Creator God, you called us in baptism and you continue to call us each day. Hear our prayers today and help us to listen for your voice and answer your call so that someday we may hear that you are well-pleased with us. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM (250 A.D.)
Under thy protection we seek refuge,
O Holy Mother of God; In our needs, despise not our petitions, But deliver us always from all dangers, O’ Glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen
O’ Mary, conceived without sin, pray
For us who have recourse to thee.

PRAYER DURING DIFFICULT TIMES
God of love and mercy, assist me in this time of trouble and anxi-ety. Ease my burdens. Strengthen my faith. Increase my trust and confidence in Your compassionate care. Give me the courage I need, dear Lord, to face the difficulties before me, knowing that with Your help, miracles happen and lives are restored. I pray for a share in Your healing graces, and ask that You sur-round me with Your comforting goodness, for health in mind and body, and for a heart filled with hope and peace. AMEN
HOLY FAMILY PARISH BAPTISM OF THE LORD
Baptism of the Lord
Paul Turner The Christmas season comes to its close when we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, an event
recorded in all four Gospels. To begin his public ministry, Jesus presented himself to be baptized by John the Baptist, and God manifested Jesus as the divine Son.
Because we associate baptism with the forgiveness of sins, the idea that the sinless Jesus would
undergo baptism seems out of place. The evangelists must have thought the same; as a whole, they downplay the incident. But the baptism of Jesus had nothing to do with forgiveness; it had everything to do with manifestation. It was a new beginning because it publicly revealed Jesus' identity, and that testimony came not from just any witness but from God.
Three incidents in the Bible are traditionally called the "epiphany" events or the "manifestations" of
Jesus, newly arrived on the biblical scene: the visit of the magi, the baptism, and the miracle at the wedding in Cana. Prior to 1969 we heard all three of these Scriptures in successive weeks: Jan. 6, Jan. 13, and on the following Sunday. All three stories form a unit because they progressively reveal the identity, the authority and the power of Jesus.
In today's calendar the Sunday readings spread over a three-year cycle. On the Baptism of the
Lord we hear a different evangelist's account each year. Only in year C does the following Sunday feature the Gospel of the wedding at Cana to unify the three celebrations.
In the United States we celebrate Epiphany on a Sunday. But in countries where the Epiphany is
a holy day of obligation, it is celebrated on Jan. 6. In the United States, the Baptism of the Lord is usually the Sunday after the Epiphany, but if Epiphany comes late, falling on Jan. 6 or 7, the Baptism of the Lord goes to the next day, Jan. 7 or 8, a Monday, in order to make room for the weeks of ordinary time.

Baptism of the Lord At Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove on Jesus and God the Father spoke, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” After his baptism Je-sus began his public ministry of proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom of God and gather-ing all people into new life with God. At the baptism of each one of us, the Holy Spirit is poured out and God tells us that we are be-loved daughters and sons.

Parents’ Prayer
“Build us children whose hearts will be clear; whose goals will be high; children who will master themselves before they seek to lead others; chil-dren who will teach into the future, yet never for-get the past. And after all these things are theirs, add, we pray, enough of a sense of humor so that they may always be seri-ous yet never take them-selves too seriously. Then we their parents will dare to whisper, ‘we have not lived in vain’”
