Feast of St. Nicholas December 6th

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children. He was the son of wealthy parents and

shared his fortune with the poor. St. Nicholas is said to have secretly left bags

of gold during the night for those who could not afford dowries for their

daughters. Legend says that maidens need only pray to the patron saint and they will have good husbands in the

future. With St Nicholas we stand in faith and worship, seeing him as a model for

our Christian lives and a model for Christian leadership.

The Feast of the Conception of St. Anne

December 9,2016

Joachim and Anna were without children. In Jewish tradition, childlessness was seen as a curse from God. When Joachim went to the Temple to bring an offering, he was publicly reproached by the elders. In shame, Joachim went off to the desert to pray. Anna, fearing Joachim was dead and lamenting her shame at

being childless, was weeping and praying in the garden. An angel appeared to her and told her she would have a child. She was so overjoyed, she promised to dedicate the child to the service of the Lord. At the same moment, an angel appeared to Joachim to tell him that Anna would have a child. Joachim got up and ran immediately back to Anna. They met each other at the Temple Gate and embraced with love. Anna knew immediately that she would bear a daughter “whose name would be proclaimed throughout the world and through whom all nations would be blessed.

Mercy is Love in Action

November 28, 2016

The year of mercy has came to a end. The Holy Door at St. Peters Basilica is closed. During this past year we were invited to meditate on God’s mercy for us, and how this mercy has been revealed to us in so many different ways. A year in which we learned that the fate of the world is not in the hands of men, but in the mercy of God.

Nonetheless, some people are still asking, “What is mercy?” Scripture has taught this for centuries, “Be merciful just as your Heavenly Father is Merciful.” (Lk. 6:36)

Mercy is a sympathetic and forgiving treatment of others that works to relieve their distress and relieve their debt. It is compassion combined with patience and action. Mercy is what we have received and what we are called to give. Mercy is love in action.

In order to illustrate what mercy is, it would be appropriate to use a video that was used by Fr. Dmytro Dnistrian, CSsR, pastor of St. Joseph’s parish, in his presentation for the pilgrims to the Holy Door at St. Joseph’s parish. The film was called "My Beautiful Woman". The story had a powerful message of love and mercy. The video clip was based on the true story of a woman who defined the true meaning of mercy and love. The story really makes you think about mercy. Living amidst constant gossip and rumors main character of the video has a secret that she will never reveal.

On November 20, 2016, during his homily for the closing of the Holy Door Divine Liturgy at Sts. Volodymyr and Olga Cathedral, Metropolitan Lawrence said, “Even though this special year of mercy is over, we know that as the People of God we must continue to practice acts of mercy in our lives. We are called to open the Holy Doors of our hearts to carry out acts of mercy to the sick and the aged, to the poor and the weak, to those who have no homes and to those who have no jobs. As much as there will never be an end to those persons in need in the world – so too there should never be an end to our mercy.”

Although the Holy Door is being closed, God’s door of mercy is always open. “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” (Jude 1:21)

THE RULES OF LIFE

Relations with others. Our life is a perfect stereotype. We do a mental photograph of a certain person and as we communicate with this “photograph” which we made in our own mind we do not want to accept the fact that a person can change. We are specialists of other people and yet are afraid to get to know ourselves. That is why very often in life we do not act but rather react to the actions of others. It is easier to say that someone else is doing something wrong than to understand oneself for it is much more difficult to adequately judge our own actions. It is important to learn to accept things in life and first of all to accept oneself. When you accept and understand yourself then you learn to accept others.

Experience of God. If we have not experienced God and preach about Him then our testimony is unconvincing.

Change and self discipline. Changes do not happen overnight. Often people plan to change, “starting Monday” or to start a new life with the New Year. But nothing happens suddenly. We do not change immediately but one step at a time: It’s like a skein of yearn, which became entangled. You can simply cut the yarn or slowly untangle it one thread at time. Working on yourself is the best kind of business. Invest in yourself.

Peace and quiet. It is very important to preserve peace and quiet. When we are in a hurry or when our emotions get the better of us, we make many unwise decisions. Don’t get carried away! For a leader it is important to remember that the more complicated the situation, the calmer he or she should be: stop, accept the situation, develop confidence and believe that God controls everything. It is important to understand that circumstances are how they are and to accept them. When we become reconciled with God, God will become reconciled with everything around us.

It is the obligation of the Church to react to the situation in the country. The Church is not called to give answers to all questions. Look at the Bible, it doesn’t have answers to everything. Jesus did not openly fight with social injustice which existed then. He did not discuss the political situation in which the Jewish people lived at that time. That is why the Church does not have to have ready answers to questions. It is not called to talk about chemical or astronomical things for the Gospel or the Bible does not write about this. But the Church talks about the person and his or her relationship with God and about their moral life.

Fasting. The best way for a modern person to fast is to do so through fasting from one’s own egoism. A modern person is focused on oneself too much and does not hear the voice of his or her neighbor, actually he or she doesn’t even hear herself.

cont’d on next page

continued from previous page - THE RULES OF LIFE

Difficulties. Life’s simple difficulties show us what our priorities are and who we really are. That is why God puts us in such situations. Don’t ask Him why he sends us trials, instead think what He wants to teach us through these trials. You don’t ask a doctor who gave you a prescription “Will this medication be sweet or sorrow?” So why do you ask God why something has happened to you. Only through the distance of time can we understand the effects of certain events.

The value of a person. God never casts anyone aside. Every person, righteous or sinner, is valuable to Him.

How can you be close to God? Yоu have to want to be close. I often give an example of a thief, a drug addict or an alcoholic. If a thief wants to rob someone he will steal. If an alcoholic wants to drink, he drinks. If a drug addict needs a fix, he gets a fix. The same applies if we want to be with God. If we want to be with God, we certainly will be. A priest was once asked: “Why are there no saints?” He answered: “Because no one wants to be a saint.” The questions is if we want this. And God, in turn, will give us some person, some book, some event which will help us to turn this wish into reality. And so the advice here is very simple – you simply have to want this very much.
