Holy Orders

Objectives:1. Identify the three ministries of this

sacrament2. Explain why only men are priests3. Differentiate diocesan from religious

clergy4. List the vows that are taken by each

• The sacrament is only open to men who have received the call by God– Jesus chose only males as Apostles– They chose males to succeed them.– This then appears to be the will of God– Not simply a historical concession

• It is the Church which determines if an individual has a vocation

Diaconate

• Deacon• Transitional

– On the way to presbyterate– Usually only a few months

• Permanent– As the name implies– Can be married but not allowed to marry

• Assist/help the priest• Can:

– Weddings– Give blessings– Baptize– Read the gospel at Mass and give the homily

Presbyterate

• Priest– Belongs to a religious order or is diocesan

clergy– Must be 24 years old– Education

• High school• College = seminary (minor)• Graduate school 4years seminary (major)

Religious vs Diocesan

• Religious– A group w/ a particular charism=mission

• Jesuits education• Benedictine ora et labora• Carthusians contemplative

– Three vows• Celibacy and not married• Poverty• Obedience to the superior of the order• 4th vow?

– Stability: stay where they are– Obedience to the Pope
