From the Principal’s Desk...
Dear Parents and Guardians,
February is noted for three significant things, the Super Bowl, cold weather and St. Valentine’s
Day. But do these three things have something in common besides that they all occur during
February?
Valentine’s Day is that one day of the month when we tell people and show them how much we
love them. St Valentine loved God and his faith so much that he died for them. To give your life
for your belief in God is the ultimate selfless act. We love God with all our heart and we pray
that should we ever be so challenged that we too would give our life for Him. However, more
realistically, the love we have for our families and friends is just as unselfish. We would do any-
thing for them. It gives us a warm feeling to love and be loved. We need warmth-emotional
warmth.
It is usually so cold and snowy during February that we are often house bound during our non-
work and school times. We want to stay warm and we do not venture outside unless it is abso-
lutely necessary. It’s too cold to chat with people outside of church or in the schoolyard in the
mornings. We are in a hurry to get back inside and stay warm. We need warmth-physical
warmth.
The Super Bowl is probably the best sports event of the entire year (especially when our Eagles
are playing). This is a day when we do venture outside of our homes to root for our team or just
enjoy sharing some yummy food with others. The game is merely the catalyst. We need one
another even if we disagree about who will win or who makes the best dip. Enjoying the game
together is God’s way of reminding us that we need the community of faith to grow up in Christ-
emotional and physical warmth.
So the element that Valentine’s Day, cold weather and the Super Bowl have in common is
WARMTH! Stay warm, both physically and emotionally. Hold on tightly to your families and
friends. Love them every day; don’t wait for the official day of love. Tell your children how
much you love them several times each day. Be sure to teach them to tell you that they love
you. Pray every day for your family and friends and encourage your child to pray too. Do kind
things for your family and friends. All of us do not need more STUFF. We need warmth.
I wish everyone a warm February and God’s graces to you.
Love,
Mary Ann

Dear students, teachers, parents and friends of Holy Rosary School,
Praised be Jesus Christ – now and forever!
First, I need to thank all the students at Holy Rosary School for the absolutely WON-
DERFUL Get Well cards they made for me during my recent illness. You have no idea how
helpful they were during my recovery. In fact, I will continue to read some of them whenev-
er I need a little booster shot. It was so uplifting to my spirit to learn of the true concern
for my well-being and return to health. They were, indeed, the best medicine I could have
received. Again, thank you VERY MUCH for your kindness. It was and is still greatly appre-
ciated.
It seems that there isn’t a month that goes by without something in that month that fo-
cuses on the Blessed Virgin Mary. In February, we focus on the Blessed Mother under the
title of Our Lady of Lourdes. Her feast day under this title is on February 11th. It was on
that day 161 years ago, February 11, 1858, that the Blessed Virgin Mary made her first of 18
appearances to a 14 year old girl named BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS (SUE-BER-ROO).
Mary appeared to her in a cave called MASSABIELLE (MASS-SAH-BEE-EL), while she was
gathering firewood with her sister and friend. During the course of those apparitions, Ber-
nadette was asked by Mary to dig in the dirt and drink from the water. Upon doing so,
Bernadette opened up a well that gave off a spring of water that continues to flow to this
day. The water is crystal clear spring water and has been the source of at least 69 proven
miraculous cures. Many people doubted these apparitions to Bernadette. What helped
PROVE the apparitions to the local priest was when Bernadette retuned with the NAME
that Mary gave her. Mary referred to herself as the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. That was
a name, phrase and title that Bernadette would never have heard before or knew about.
So, as we go through this month of February and celebrate such things as the Feast of
the Presentation of the Lord (February 2) and Ground Hog Day and Valentine’s day, let us
not forget that special day dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is Our Lady of
Lourdes, but most especially, she is the Immaculate Conception!

5th Grade
The grade 5 ELA class has been working on writing. While trying to extend sentences, using descriptive
phrases, the students created several pieces of writing. Journals from their Christmas vacation turned into
descriptive writing, entertaining the class during oral presentations. The students worked on biographies,
modeled after the "Who Was?" series. After interviewing classmates, the students used the answers to
complete short biographies. The caricature covers complete the project. Students are working on 2 Voice
Poems, where they choose two characters from a story, (for example the Wicked Queen and Snow
White.) The students complete a dialogue about a particular topic, with the two characters answering in opposing views, while working with a particular rhyme scheme. Next up on the poetry writing is the Earth
Day project sponsored by Whitpain Township.

1st Grade
First Grade has been busy learning about Jesus' love for God and showing that love to their families and
friends. They have been practicing their subtraction in Math and love listening to stories about Martin Luther King Jr., winter and snow. They have been busy making cards for people in their parish and writing
why they love Holy Rosary School. They are looking forward to all the fun during Catholic Schools Week.

2nd Grade
Second graders just wrapped up our double-digit addition unit in math and are happily starting double-digit
subtraction. We are completing various student led math investigations to explore different ways to sub-
tract double-digit numbers. Epiphany was our second parish to receive Reconciliation. The remaining stu-
dents are anxiously awaiting their turn! To celebrate the nation during Catholic Schools Week, second
grade will be hosting a Presidential Living History Museum. Our students have been researching a
president, and during Catholic Schools Week, they are invited to come dressed as their president and re-
cite their research at our expo!

Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been busy at work in this new year! We have been learning about the Holy Family and how special
are own families are to each of us! We also have been talking a lot about our special Holy Rosary Regional Catholic
School Family, since Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching! We enjoyed another Munchkin Meeting with our
Pre-K friends and shared all the reasons why we love Holy Rosary School! The children wrote down their awesome
reasons on a heart and then decorated the heart with their own special drawing. We are so excited to hang them
up outside Mrs. Gilman's office for everyone to see and read! We also learned about a special man named
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We learned that we should always be kind to everyone we meet! We discussed ways to
be a good friend and even drew some beautiful pictures to go with our answers.

3rd Grade
3rd grade has been hard at work learning how to apply our multiplication skills. We are practicing our facts a lot so
that we are prepared for our next task of learning how to divide! In writing, third graders are writing narratives
about a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day they had. We read Alexander's story about his bad day and are us-
ing that as inspiration. In their writing they are meant to focus on using their senses to make the reader feel like
they are experiencing the same things that they did. They are also meant to use dialogue to help their writing come
alive. To practice using dialogue, the students created comic strips. This was a very exciting activity for them! They
loved creating their characters and story plot. They also enjoyed displaying their work around the room and taking
turns reading through everyone's stories. In Social Studies, we spent some time discussing Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. We had great discussion about Dr. King's dream that all people should be treated by the content of their charac-
ter and not by the color of their skin. To build on his very important message, third grade created dream clouds
displaying personal dreams they had for the world, their education, their classroom, their future, and their family.
This was a great activity and sparked a lot of discussion!

Seventh graders: Zaara Abraham, Annalise Bilardo, Matthew Christopher, Andrew Doorly, Amy Garcia, Brianna
Petruccelli, and Aidan Tomeo attended STEM Wars at Lansdale Catholic. We were one of six schools that attended,
each school sent two teams. The students had to build a straw bridge with limited materials in 35 minutes. The
bridge was tested to see how much weight it would hold. This was our first time at STEM Wars and the students
are looking forward to attending next year.
