This is what our Lenten season is calling us to--complete trust in the goodness and forgive-ness of the God who sent his only Son to save us from ourselves. May we gladly and joy-

fully accept that gift.

Today's Gospel passage contains probably the most well known and quoted verse in the whole Bible: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who be-lieves in him may not perish but may have eter-nal life." This is from John, chapter 3, verse 16.

When we compare our sins with the love of God, there is no contest. So many times we agonize about things we have done wrong and re-pented of, giving our-selves unnecessary grief. God's love covers over all of our past wrongdoing. This is really hard for us to believe because it goes against the way that our society operates. Do something criminally wrong and you end up in prison until you pay your debt.

Sometimes the Good News is too good. We are so used to earning every-thing that we have, we also want to earn our forgiveness. The teaching on Justifica-tion clearly goes against any sense of discourage-ment we may have be-cause of our past wrong-doings. When God for-

gives, God forgets. There is no book up in heaven where God is keeping track of our sins. If God does keep track it is more like putting information into a computer. When a

Third Sunday of Lent-March

10/11th, 2018. – The Gospel story

of Jesus’ encounter with Nicode-mus, a Pharisee and leader of the Jews who comes to Jesus by night, recognizing Jesus as a teacher from God, but coming in secret for fear of being put out of the syna-gogue. Jesus rebukes him for his lack of understanding. Good stew-ards realize that for the sake of this world, God gives his most cherished beloved son. And so they are willing to confess Jesus as their Lord and saviour in a public way. They do not keep their faith to themselves, in darkness. The Gospel reading challenges us to profess our faith in word and deed publicly, not to hide it away. Are we willing to accept the Gospel’s challenge? Are we willing to get out of our personal “comfort zone” and confess our faith in Christ Jesus in an open, tangible way?
