GREETINGS FROM FR . DAVE
So, is spring coming? Most people I talk to are glad that we missed a lot of the forecasted snow/ice. School kids are not so happy though. As I write this early in the week, it sounds like winter is not ready to give up yet. Remember, regardless of the weather, we will have our regularly scheduled weekend and daily Masses, and remember, the parking lot will not be plowed so PLEASE stay home unless you are really hardy and bounce easily!
Congratulations to our students and adults who were confirmed this weekend. May the Holy Spirit continue to transform your lives and use you to make a wonderful difference in this world! We need you.
I wrote last weekend about a parishioner from the Philippines whose home parish has a very active student band program. They are in urgent need of instruments and I am putting out the plea for any of you who have instruments stored away in the closet not being used to consider bringing them here to
church so we can help out. Clarinets, saxophones, flutes, trumpets, and trombones are all needed. Let’s see if we can help them “make a joyful noise to the Lord”!
The annual Archdiocesan Catholic Appeal is coming up. I received my letter and pledge card in the mail this week. As you have heard before, these are funds that supply services beyond the immediate scope of Holy Trinity — including seminarian training, retirement, campus ministry, prison ministry, and the operation of the Archdiocese. We have always met our parish goal and our success is very simple: we ask each of our parishioners to do something towards this. Holy Trinity is asked to pledge $130,500 this year. Please join me in doing our part. Congratulations and blessings to Amiyah Cruz, Emmanuel Jimenez, and Dominic Pangelinan III, who were baptized this weekend!

BRETT ’S TWO CENTS
Hello everyone. Bishop Barron had an interesting reflection this past week for Wednesday’s gospel, in which Jesus declares that it is not that which goes into us that makes us unclean, but rather that which comes out of a person, from their heart. Barron said:
How often the Bible speaks of the “heart.” By that it means the core of the self, the deepest center of who we are, that place from which our thoughts and actions arise. God wants to penetrate that heart, so that he is the center of our souls. But there is something terribly black in the human heart. We are made in the image and likeness of God, but that image can be so distorted by sin as to be barely recognizable. Our faith clearly teaches the awful truth of the fall, and we see the evidence of it in the mystery of sin, which is not to be ignored, not to be trifled with, not to be rationalized away. We are all capable of dark and evil acts. I’m not okay and neither are you.
Lent is just a couple of weeks away, and Barron’s reflection led me to thinking about what a counter-cultural season Lent is. So much of the prevailing zeitgeist would tell us that if we’re unhappy with our lives, the cause must be “out there” somewhere, someone else’s fault. As Fr. Dave has said, we can waste so much time looking for external solutions to internal problems. Without denying the reality of injustice and the sins of others, Lent would have us look first inside of ourselves for a solution to our unhappiness. Where is the brokenness inside of me that needs the mercy of God? Where is the wound that I’m afraid to let God touch? To what do I continue to cling, rather than surrender it to God’s mercy and Providence? Until we begin to allow God to heal the hurt inside of us, we’ll never be able to address the hurt of the world around us. . . .

About four years ago I was introduced to a single mom in need of serious help. She was homeless at the time and, frankly, her life was a mess. It would have been easy to just do a few simple things for her and her son that would have provided some temporary relief. But she was different. She was determined and had a drive about her that indicated she could make it. All she needed was the right kind of help. Fortunately, at the time, we had room in our Ministry House. We placed them there and began to build a support network based on what she needed.
Life had been tough and her self-esteem was low. A parishioner with counseling skills offered to meet with her on a regular basis and her confidence began to grow.
She had dropped out of high school, but knew education was important and constantly stressed that to her son. One of our awesome teachers offered to tutor her on her own time. The mom was so proud when a couple of years later she obtained her GED.
She had limited marketable skills. A local non-profit offered an opportunity to learn office, computer and customer service skills. Eventually she did some work within the School District assisting others in situations similar to hers, where she learned that helping others is what she wanted to do.
Eventually she met someone, moved out of state, married, and had another child. We stay in touch exchanging holiday greetings or just simple messages from time-to-time. She had told me she wanted to start college. With a little one at home she knew it would need to be online, but for her this was a huge move. She recently sent me a text with a photo attached. The photo was of her award for making the Dean’s List for her first term in college.
None of this would have happened were it not for many, many people caring and guiding her along the way. It took years for her life to fall apart. It is taking years to put it back together. Thank you all for helping make this happen. Please pray for her continued growth.
Four bills have been introduced in the 2019 Oregon State Legislature that expand assisted suicide. These bills create dangerous loopholes that put vulnerable Oregonians at risk. Visit ortl.org/noeuthanasia to learn more about these loopholes, and consider contacting your legislators to tell them to oppose these bills!
