Pastoral Letter for Easter 2019 to the Christian Faithful of the Diocese of Port Pirie
Dear Sisters and Brothers
The world has been riveted by the sight of Notre Dame Ca-thedral burning in Paris. It is the greatest symbol the French have, and has been with them for almost nine centuries. The timbers had the marks of medieval saws and hammers. There was modern IT and close circuit television as well, wiz-ardry of modern technology cheek by jowl with handcrafted ancient artistry. It was a Cathedral that spanned the ages, so much of it was reduced to ashes. It will be built again, rising from the destruction.
In a way it is an image of the Church, much of which has been damaged in recent times. It will rebuild through the Spirit and our fidelity, rising out of the ashes of disillusion.
The rising of Jesus on Easter Day destroyed all death and ushered in new life. Christ’s Resurrection rebuilds us in hope. His Body in the world is the Church, the body of the faithful baptised. May Easter continue to assure us that Christ makes all things new, and life is His gift that He gives forever. Yours in Christ, Bishop Gregory O’Kelly SJ
TO OUR HOLY WEEK HELPERS
The parish is grateful to all who took on extra responsibilities to help us celebrate Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday
with proper ceremony and faith. Much effort went into music and other ministries. Thanks especially to those who helped co-ordinate matters. Bishop Greg and the Parish Team thank you all and wish you a most blessed Easter.
From Ashes to the Living Font
“We rise again from ashes from the good we fail to do. We rise again from ashes to create ourselves anew…” We are here…Easter is here and once again we can sing joyfully the “Alleluia!” The Lenten journey concludes with us renewing our Baptismal Promises to reject sin so as to live as God’s children and to profess our faith in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But it seems all these are mere “talk” and what about the implication on life? That is why during Lent, the call is conversion, metanoia, a change of heart. The questions in the renewal of our Baptismal Promises should veer us to God’s direction and God’s life. Le this Easter count! Let us be lured by Christ.
In what is seems to be my last Easter message for you, I want you to know that I am so grateful to the Lord that he has led me to this parish with wonderful and amazing people. My 8 years of ministry has only been exciting with some bumps along the way but nevertheless filled with excitement and gratitude. Thank you for your friendship and the opportunity to serve you. To some, thank you for making me part of your family. Thank you for the understanding and love. Promise me that you will still be praying for me and I make my solemn promise to also pray for you. For me, Port Pirie is my first love and first love never dies. A blessed Easter to you.
Fr Francis
Happy Easter Everyone !
We thank the Lord for the gift which remind us of Hope, Joy and Peace always possible in Christ. May the spirit of Easter continue to
live in our hearts so that we ourselves can be an experience of Easter to others bringing life to the world.
