    Remarks from Fr. Michael

“LoveEachOther” Dearly Beloved, March 2020 We are in the first week of Great Lent and I pray that all will enjoy health and every blessing of God in these forty days of fasting, vigilance and prayer. We hear and read many uplifting things all essential to our Lenten discipline, here I want to deal with one of these, with the help of God, we should all grasp and experience fully. This is the virtue of love which must fill our hearts during Great Lent; love towards God and love towards our brethren.

Love in reality describes the very essence of the Christian way of life. The Christian application oflove is a moral necessity if we are to overcome its opposite which is hate. The concept of love which is called the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12) should determine the whole inward disposition of Christian life and conduct. Our Lord Jesus Christ has given us explicitly the new commandment as the fulfillment oflove. We have to think very deeply and very carefully on the majestic words of our Lord when He tells us: “A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you alsolove one another” (John 13:34) and He adds with emphasis “By this shall all men know, that you aremydisciplesif youhavelovedone toanother” (John 13:35). Against this loving disposition for God and neighbor which our Lord commands us to follow, we have the work of the Devil who fights the will of God by creating sin and division, the very rejection of love and the work of Christ and His Church. Now we don’t only experience this demonic darkness in the ugliness of our secular world of crimes, hatred, terrorism, and wars, etc. but every time each and every one of us forgets his Christian obligation to the Golden Rule, becomes without realizing it an instrument of hate, bitterness and destruction even within our Christian community. We may catch ourselves criticizing, gossiping, exposing others with our words and actions. Either a Christian behaves as a Christian with respect and love in his heart and undergoes an inward change of moral and spiritual perfection (which is our great task for Lent) or adopts simply bitterness and hate in his heart certainly not for God but for some of his brethren. Christian love inspires us to be humble, to serve and sacrifice as a parent does for his children. “Thesonofmancamenottobeservedbuttoserve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). This is the great thing of Lent. This is what Lent is all about. How much God loved the world, and this is what He calls upon us to follow as His disciples. If God’sloveforman be the motive of man’sloveforGod and his fellowmen, then, we as Christians attaincommunionwithGod and the fellowship with His saints and with our fellowmen. In emphasizing the Christian concept of love our Lord enters this measure of forgiveness when He teaches us how to pray to the Father, “forifyouforgivementheirtrespasses, yourheavenlyFatheralsowillforgiveyou” (Matthew 6:14). Forgiveness “seventy times seven” is part of Christian love. “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but I say to you, love yourenemies and pray for those who persecute you, for if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?” (Matthew 5:43-44,46). To put it simply if we strike against the strong hold of the devil and sin, we are called upon to forgive. Forgiveness iswhatmakesuspartof theChrist given

  • THE SOURCE MARCH 2020 Page 3 unity by the power of the Holy Spirit. It safeguards the whole harmony and order of Church life and vivifies the Christian love. To forgive someone means that I put between myself and my so call enemy the blessed forgiveness of God. To be able to forgive means that I acknowledge the difficulty of human relationships and I bring the whole matter to Christ. To forgive means that I bring Christ, Himself and His blessed kingdom to my life and to the life of my fellowmen. Truly, forgiveness is a passing into the blessed kingdom of God. If indeed we achieve, during Great Lent to put ourselves in our desire for loveof God and man and to bring this experience to our neighbors, relatives, friends and even to our enemies, then we free ourselves from our ego-centricity, the slavery of sin and then we enter into the life of Christ. Then Great Lent will bring a magnificent reward not only in our lives but in the life of our community. Great Lent truly prepares us for the Feast of the Resurrection of our Lord. Not only to forgive but something that is even more difficult, to beg for forgiveness. In this spirit, the spirit of this call of our Lord, I want to beg from each and every one of you forgiveness for my own faults, for my own passions and mistakes asking you to both forgive me and to pray for me that I may minister to all as our Lord commands. Let us try to do our best to practice forgiveness and love; each helping the other to become a worthy member of His Church. Amen. I pray with you for all of us that we may have a worthy and Holy Lent. Amen.

    In Christ’s love, Fr. Michael

  • THE SOURCE MARCH 2020 Page

A NOTE FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners, On Sunday February 16, 2020 our community sponsored a fund raiser for two orphans from Agrinio, Greece. I want to thank Father Michael for his spiritual guidance and everyone who participated in making this day special and memorable. For those of us who were able to attend the luncheon, we were blessed with delicious food, service and heartfelt appreciation by the Thomas Tzanis Family who donated all of the food, time and love in making this a successful event. We could not have had any better hosts. Thank You! At the end of the day, our parish was able to raise $7,737 from people who attended the event and from those who left their donation because they were unable to make the event. The generosity of our community continues. Since the luncheon, donations have been coming in from our parish individuals and organizations of the church. The latest total is now approaching $10,000. Father Michael is going to wait another 10 days to send the check. If you have not had the chance to donate. please contact Father Michael or the office to make your donation. As children of the lord, we expect God to work in earthshaking events, after all He is God. This is a great lesson of small blessings accumulating and making a difference for two orphans and for our community. We both were blessed: raising money for two needy orphans and in return our community opened our hearts and showed our love for the lord. Thank You Everyone! Yours in Christ, Basil Papoutsis Parish Council President

SUNDAY SCHOOL This is Oratorical Festival time. The date is

Sunday, March 8, 2020. Please encourage your child to participate. Our students are very busy with studies and activities in school, but this project gives them an opportunity to look into their Orthodox Faith. Some students may enter the project to participate in the reading of their reports for competition or the student may just want to research and write something short expressing their feelings about a topic that interests them.

Please have your child in Church in time to hear the Epistle and Gospel readings for each Sunday.

We would appreciate if the parents would donate cookies, crackers, etc. to be kept in the Church kitchen and put out each Sunday for Sunday School treat during Coffee Hour. If you would like to donate, please see Despina Aftosmes or Thana Ward. We greatly thank you.

GREEK SCHOOL On Monday, March 23rd we will have a special Greek Independence Day Program at our State Capitol with Dignitaries and other guests. We also will have coverage on the news channels and local newspaper, as well. We ask that adults and children please plan to come. We will meet at the Capitol at 9:00am. All children coming, we ask that you wear your Greek costumes if you have them. If you don’t, then blue and white would be great. School excuses will be available from Fr. Michael. We hope that for those who need transportation we will provide from the Church’s parking lot at 8:30am. Please let us know by calling the Church Office. Sunday, March 29th, we will have our Greek Independence Day program given by the Greek School in the Church Hall after the Divine Liturgy. The children will be dressed in their ethnic costumes and march into Church for the Doxology with the Annunciation icon and the flags. Afterwards a light lunch will be served in the Hall and then the program will begin. This is a special event for our Greek School, and we hope that our Parishioners may stay and attend. This year we will also have a special theatrical play given by our Greek School. For this play Mr. George Giannaris will be in charge.

STS. JOACHIM AND ANNA Our February meeting had a great turnout with over 40 members attending the meeting. A delicious meal was served by Stephanie Kaldes, Betsie Boutselis and Bill & Diane Foutres. Instead of a

speaker, the attendees enjoyed playing Valentine’s bingo.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 5th at 11:30am. The meeting’s hosts are Christine Stamos, Koula Kokos, Kiki Wasch, Theodora Hench and Sophia Kaldes. The meeting will be held in the social hall starting at 11:30 am. We hope the weather cooperates and allows us to see a great turnout for the meeting. We are still working on a speaker for the meeting.

Membership in the Sts. Joachim and Anna Society is open to Orthodox parishioners, relatives and friends who are 55 and over. However, any parishioner, family member or friend can attend our meetings and participate in our trips and other activities.

CHURCH LENDING LIBRARY The church library contains information about Orthodoxy and Greece for you and your children. If you would like to borrow a book, fill out the information sheet found in the Library notebook binder. When you return it, be sure to list the date returned by your original sign in. Keep the books as long as you like; just be sure to return them within a reasonable amount of time so that your fellow parishioners may read them as well. Thank you.

HOLY TRINITY BOOKS & GIFTS Lent begins on March 2nd. Stop by to check out what we have to meet your Lenten reading and gift giving needs. We are constantly adding new book titles to our excellent collection of Orthodox books. We have also received a new CD for “The Twelve Days of Christmas to Epiphany”. We highly recommend it. A recommended book is “Ascetics in the World” which is full of biographies or ordinary people who currently live in our society with families and managed to please the Lord.

The bookstore has a large selection of items. We provide icons, censers, charcoal and incense for your household use. All proceeds from the bookstore either go directly back into the bookstore or into the parish. In addition to the books for adults, we also have a large selection of books for children and teenagers. If we do not have what you are looking for, we can submit special orders with

  • THE SOURCE MARCH 2020 Page 12 our suppliers to get what you want. We can typically satisfy special orders in 2-4 weeks.

We have the wine that is used for communion available for purchase. We recently added bottles of light olive oil that can be donated for the altar vigil light. We also carry a burial cloth (Σαβανο) that has been blessed in Jerusalem at the tomb of Christ. This can be used for funerals.

Holy Trinity Books and Gifts’ normal operating hours are following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, and the Thursday when the Sts. Joachim and Anna Society meet from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. For more information or special requests, contact Jim and Kiki Lloyd (email: [email protected] or call 717-507-0003.

LADIES’ BEREAVEMENT GROUP This group meets once a month on a Thursday. Our next gathering will be held March 19th, 2020 at 11:30am. We speak on different topics that concern the group and discuss ways to cope with grief. Please consider coming. CONCERNED MOTHERS GROUP

The goal of the group is to foster spiritual dialogue among mothers in our community in regards to raising our children in an Orthodox Christian home. We can all probably list many challenges we have faced as our children have journeyed through preschool to high school.

The topics of the group are focusing on making Orthodoxy a practical, living experience in our daily lives. Father Michael is leading the group. We meet in the Library monthly. Our next scheduled monthly meeting will be Wednesday, March 25th at 7:00pm during dance practice. The topic: “Why do our children misbehave?”

FYI – Scholarship Sunday is June 7, 2020.

THREE HIERARCHS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS (FOR GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS): In 1981, Drs. Anthony and Joyce Kales conceived, established and originally funded five endowment funds for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. These endowment funds included: The Three Hierarchs Scholarship Awards Fund; Saints Joachim and Anna Senior Citizens Fund; Saints Eleftherios and Stylianos JOY Fund; Saint Gregory Palamas Holy Cross Seminary Fund; and, Saint Cosmas Aitolos Greek School Fund. The Drs. Kales intended the Three Hierarchs Scholarship Awards to recognize and stimulate interest in superior academic achievement among our young parishioners. They continued to fund and manage this endowment until it grew substantially so that it now can provide up to 5 or 6 Three Hierarchs Scholarship Awards yearly from the Drs. Anthony and Joyce Kales Fund within the overall endowment.

In the 1990’s a contribution by Costas and Ekaterina Costopoulos allowed for creation of the Costas and Ekaterina Costopoulos Family Fund within the overall Three Hierarchs Endowment which can provide for an additional yearly scholarship.

Each year, at the beginning of May, all graduating high school seniors who are members of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral community are eligible to submit their high school transcript and information of superior academic achievement and scholastic standing to be considered for this award. The application is evaluated in relation to the following criteria: (1) a combined SAT score for critical reading and math of 1320 or greater (the combined scores must be from the same SAT exam i.e., scores cannot be combined from two separate exams); and (2) membership in the National Honor Society, (3) Grade Point Average of 3.5 or above. The amount of the scholarship awards may vary between $500 and $1500 depending on the amount of funds available for distribution. It is emphasized that the applicants must have taken the SAT examination. i.e. ACT substitution is not allowed. Those graduating high school seniors who wish to be considered for an award may request an application packet from the Church Office. The application with all required information as outlined must be submitted to the Church Office by Sunday, May 6, 2019 to be eligible for consideration. Any questions should be directed to Dr. Anthony Kales by email [email protected].

Selected candidate/s will be notified and invited to attend Holy Trinity’s Youth Recognition Sunday on June 2nd to receive the award immediately following Divine Liturgy.

The scholarship award was established to recognize superior academic achievement among our Neohoriti youth. Selection for this scholarship award will be based on a student’s academic performance in relation to the following criteria: (1) Class Ranking; (2) Grade Point Average; and (3) SAT scores. Selected candidates will be notified and invited to the Annual Neohoriton Picnic to be held during the latter part of July to receive the scholarship award.

    1. ThisSundayFebruary16thwe are sponsoring a luncheon benefitting two orphans in Agrinio whose parents were killed in a car accident some years ago. They are being raised by their elderly grandparents. They are in need of help. Names have been given for the luncheon and so far, we have about 165 parishioners who said that they are coming. The meal will be provided by the family.

    3. AsuperbandindetailPresentationforthebenefitsofcreatingaCharterSchool in our area was discussed last Sunday,Feb. 2ndaftertheDivineLiturgy inourChurchHall. Our invited honored guests were Prof. Marina Matheoudakis, the principle of the Odyssey Academy in Wilmington, DE, Mr. Dimitris Dandolos, Board member of the School and co-founder and Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis, Director of the Greek Education Department of our Holy Archdiocese. The power point presentation along with the video showing the School in DE and the information presented contributed immensely to our preparation of starting the process and envisioning the steps in creating the Charter School. Thank you to our Parishioners who attended and made good questions. Our heartfelt thanks to our Parish Council President Mr. Basil Papoutsis for making the delicious avgolemono soup, meatball sandwiches etc. that were served for lunch. The Committee members, under the chairmanship of Dr. Zissis Chroneos, are extremely grateful to the presenters and our Parishioners for their encouragement for the School. On Saturday evening, February 1st, after Vespers we had a dinner/meeting in the “Skyline” Restaurant. Again the presenters of the Chapter School shared a wealth of information to the Committee Members. We had a very fruitful discussion. We are very grateful to Mr. Vasilis Kotsalos for providing the private room and for serving dinner to all free of charge.

    4. ProposingSt.PhotiosCandidates: Olympia Giannakopoulos and Vasiliki Kalathas. Both ladies are hard working for whatever our Church needs especially relating to the Kitchen. They especially gave a lot of years working in the Kitchen for the Festival prior, during and even after the Festival. Thank you.

    5. ClergyRetreat – The Clergy Retreat for the Spring will be on March 10th – 12th at the Antiochian Village.

    6. Handrailings – A generous couple has agreed to pay for the entire cost of the hand railings that will go on the Solea. The generous couple is James and Maria Costopoulos. The cost is $7,000. Esquire John Papoutsis, our P.C. Secretary, is reviewing the contract and communicating with the company.

    7. Stewardship – I would very much like to have included in the leadership section of the Source the names published of persons that are donating over $3,000.00 to the Church sponsoring different items that I need to have. I would like for our Community to know the generosity of these parishioners, as well.

    8. GOYABasketballTournamentinPittsburgh on Friday, Feb. 14th to Sunday, Feb. 16th. We will have 2 boy teams and a girls’ team. We wish them the best.

need to be assembled and volunteers are very much needed. The Community so far has quite a number of volunteers and I am very thankful. Also, money donations have been given to increase the number of meals that we are making. The Philoptochos is spear-heading this event and the entire Community is asked to help.

    10. Saturday,March7th we will have our Pan-Orthodox SundayofOrthodoxyVespers Service at St. Nicholas Serbian Church, 601 S. Harrisburg, Oberlin-Steelton, PA, this year at 5:00pm. All the Choirs have been invited, including ours, to three practices before the service. I have already notified our choir of the practice days. All the communities with their parishioners in the greater Harrisburg area are invited to attend.

    11. ParishOratoricalFestival will be held on Sunday,March8th after the services. A light luncheon will be served, and everyone is invited to stay and listen to the speeches. The children do a fantastic job. Last year we had both Junior and Senior levels go to the Metropolis and we also had Peter Ariano advance to the Archdiocese level. Our children make us so proud.

    12. GOYAFiresideChat on Sunday,March8th at 5:00pm at the home of John and Maria Papoutsis. We thank them for their hospitality.

The proceeds from this film will benefit our Ionian Village Fund and Autism. There is a seating capacity of 962 people. The ticket price will be $15 and the cost to rent the theater for that evening is $1440. We need to have 10 sponsors for $300 each.

    14. March 25th Celebration at the State Capitol on Monday, March 23rd. Dr. Michael Billys is the Coordinator.

    15. Sunday,March29th,we will have our Greek Independence Day program given by the Greek School in the Church Hall after the Divine Liturgy. Mr. George Giannaris will be in charge of the play.

    16. Visitors: I would appreciate when you see new persons coming to the church to write down their names on a piece of paper and bring it to me in the Holy Altar. I like to welcome them after the services, and I know that people go up and speak with them to make them feel welcomed. Thank you.
