Learning in Reception at Holy Trinity Dear Parents and Carers, Reception children have had another busy week at school! Lots of learning and fun!

Have a nice weekend Miss Martin

Literacy- Reception children have continued to work on the story “Funny Bones”. This week, the children learnt what a list is. They understood that when writing a list one word goes underneath each other. Reception came up with some lovely ideas when writing a shopping list for the skeletons! Maths- Reception have been working on their counting skills, making tens using cubes and understanding the concept of “0”. Art- We have been learning about primary and secondary colours. We made ice cubes in primary colours for the children to melt with hot water and discover new colours. They loved this activity! RE- The children went for a walk around the school playground and used their senses to identify aspects of nature as in the creation story. Next week: Could you provide us with a baby photo of your child for RE next week? Thank you

Topic- We made sand mousse by mixing sand with washing-up liquid. The children observed the similarities, differences and changes brought about by mixing things together. Homework- This week’s task is to trace their names various times using different colours (Rainbow Writing) Homework goes out on a Tuesday and comes back the following Monday. ClassDojo- Invitations to our ClassDojo platform have been sent out! Check your inboxes to join your child’s ClassDojo account. Handwriting whiteboards- We are selling handwriting whiteboards for £2 so your child can practise cursive letter formation at home. You can pay on school gateway. Please make sure all coats and jumpers are clearly labelled! Thank you

Learning in Year 1 at Holy Trinity

Friday 2nd October 2020

This week in English, we wrote our own versions of ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. We tried to write the key events of the story, in order, and we tried our best to make the story more exciting by using adjectives in our sentences. We thought about the different adjectives we could use to de-scribe the food, the character’s feelings and to describe how the characters behave in the story. Next week we will begin to plan our own stories based on ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. In Maths, we started subtraction within 10. We looked at different strategies to help us solve subtraction problems. We used taking away, counting back, counting on from the known part and we used our knowledge of number bonds to help us. We looked really carefully at the relationship between the parts and the whole and used this to help us. In Alphabet codes we looked at all the different codes for /oa/. We discovered oa as in goat, o as in go, oe as in toe, ow as in slow and o-e as in phone. Next week, we will be investigating all the different codes for /oa/. Next week, we will be looking at /oo/ as in moon. In Art, we continued to look at the work of Leonardo Di Vinci. This week we thought about how we can use shapes to help us draw. We looked at the different shapes we could see within the image of a horse. We then had a go at drawing a horse using shapes first, then adding more detail. In Geography, we continued our topic of ‘our local area’. We discussed our journeys to school and the different ways each of us get to school each day. We then had a go at independently sequencing our own journeys and writing simple sentences to describe what we do and see at each point. Here are some examples of our learning from this week. Well done to all the children for working so hard .

Have a lovely weekend!

Learning in Year 2 at Holy Trinity

Friday 2nd

October 2020

This week in Year 2: In English this week, we have been learning to evaluate, edit and improve different texts and identify spelling errors, missing grammar as well as improving our work. We have also presented a short story, which linked nicely to drama and speaking clearly and using intonation. In Maths, we have been learning to make ten first then and add three numbers as well as solving worded addition problems. In RE we have been learning more about Ruth and discussing the significance of the theme of kindness in the story from the Old Testament. In science, we reviewed living processes and discussed the differences for animals comparing them to other non-living items. We did a game of sorting with discussion and using the iWB to come up and move the items. We explored and found living, dead or items that have never been alive in the playground and discussed what we found. I gave out a paper copy of the homework earlier this week on Tuesday to give more time to complete it. Please give back the green homework books on Monday.

Learning in Year 3 at Holy Trinity

Friday 2nd

October 2020

Have a lovely weekend!

In Maths we have been revising adding and subtracting numbers within 1000 using the column method. In Literacy we have looked at using adjectives to create our own creatures, thinking about what they look like, where they eat and where they live. This week in History we thought about how Stone Age humans changed from nomads to farmers. In Science we created a light maze. In Art we are going to look in detail at how to make ears, eyes and noses out of clay for our Antony Gormley inspired sculptures. In R.E. we looked at the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur

In Maths next week we will start looking at models that we can use to explain addition and subtraction problems. In Literacy we will write our own descriptive reports about an animal of our own choice or of our own creation. In History we will look at a Stone Age settlement called Skara Brae and the clues it has left behind about Stone Age life. In Science we will look a shadows. In Art we will try to create scenes using multiple models.

In R.E. we will look at other important Jewish festivals.

Learning in Year 4 at Holy Trinity

Friday 2nd October This week in Writing, we revisited synonyms – what they are and how to find them. We pulled out the thesaurus and found synonyms for common words such as big, old, walk and scary. Later in the week, we started planning and writing our diary entry making sure to include the strong synonyms we found and fronted adverbials. In Maths, we whizzed through addition of four-digit numbers with and without regrouping. This is something we come back to a lot in Year 4 as it pops up in other topics in maths such as money and measurement. So make sure you’re practising your fast facts at home! In RE, we read the story of Abraham and his readiness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, for God. We dis-cussed how this story, and stories of other ‘People of God’, fit into the Bible’s big story. In History we role played what school was like back in the Tudor times – we had to chant our times tables, do drill (PE) and practise our Tudor handwriting. In Art, we finished our one-point perspective artwork inspired by LS Lowry. On Thursday, we were fortunate enough to have Robert Crowther, paper engineer, come and teach us how to make pop-up books. We had a lot of fun and learnt lots of new skills. Good questions to ask your child this week are:

What is a synonym? Why did the angel tell Abraham to stop and not sacrifice his son? Would you prefer to be a child at school now or in the past? Why?

Reminders:

Students need to have snack –fruit or vegetable. When students play and run around at break time (10:40am), if they have snack, they are able to refuel for the next learning session.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Miss Harman

Word of the week: Jubilant – very excited

Learning at Holy Trinity in Year 5 2nd October 2020

We’ve had an incredibly busy week in Year 5 this week with the return to our normal timetable after a few assessments last week. The class has loved leaping into the topic of rounding in maths and delighted Miss Neave with efforts in History. In Science this week, the children been putting their analysing skills to work as they solved the crime of the century following the kidnapping of Year 5’s beloved flower-pot. During this session, they gained an increased knowledge of forensic science and the different methods used to solve crimes from fingerprinting to handwriting. This is a topic Year 5 will continue to explore for the rest of term. In English, we have been looking a descriptive writing. Year 5 has made a strong start to their work with week, using a wide range of adverbials and adjectives in their writing, before moving on to add personification. The effort they put into their learning has been incredibly impressive, especially the level of their up levelling of sentences.

Homework has changed for Year 5, with pupils receiving their full homework schedule on a Monday for the week. This is when all homework is printed and stuck into their homework books. Homework typically will flow the pattern of:

Monday: Spelling Tuesday: Book Study Wednesday: Maths Thursday: Science/History/Art/Geography/PSHE Friday: Book Study

An excellent week in Year 5! Have a lovely weekend

Learning in Year 6 at Holy Trinity

Friday 2nd October 2020 In English, we have been busy writing some very gripping story openings. The quality of work was of a high standard and full of descriptive language. We worked hard to edit and improve our work before moving on to a new unit of work based on the Hunger Games. In Maths, we have returned back to place value. Revising our knowledge of ordering and comparing numbers using key vocabulary (greater than, less than, ascending, descending, increasing and decreasing). Then we moved on to number patterns and sequences, looking at what value a sequence is increasing or decreasing by. On Wednesday, we celebrated Harvest in Holy Trinity Church. Year 6 sang and read beautifully. In Science, we have carried on our study into the circulatory system, with focus on the heart. We measured our beats per seconds after we had been running for a period of time. In PSHE we learnt about the benefits and dangers of sun exposure and the best ways to stay safe in the sun. In RE, we looked at the story of the Monkey King and re-enacted the story, we then discussed sacrifice and its importance. In Art, We continued to explore colour and techniques used in pop art, creating our very own still life drawings of objects in the classroom.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Next week

Maths – We continue with place value. English – We will be starting a new unit of work, looking at the opening of the Hunger Games, continuing to expand on our writing tools. Science – we will be dissecting a Ram’s heart!
