PRAYER CHAIN: Anyone in need of spiritual support may place their requests on the prayer chain by calling Barbara at 215-345-6219.

April 14, 2019

From the Desk of Our Pastor Today we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Some of the same people who welcomed Him with “Hosanna the Son of David” would in a few days cry out “Crucify Him, Crucify Him.” Today some baptized Christians deny Jesus by their actions.

Msgr. Charles H. Hagan

Gluten Free Hosts Available "If you would like to receive a gluten free host at Mass please come to the front of the church to the celebrant and stand next to the regular line. It would also be helpful if you would indicate to the celebrant or deacon before Mass that you would like to receive a gluten free host."

PETITION BOOK: The petition book is available in the rear vestibule for those who wish to enter their concerns in that way. Requests placed in the petition book are also honored in a general way by the members of the prayer chain. The petition book will be brought up to the altar the first Sunday of every month.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 28, 2019

Pope John Paul II officially designated the first Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus revealed to Sister Faustina that on that day a person’s sins would be forgiven and the temporal punishment associated with them if certain conditions are fulfilled: 1) Place complete trust in God’s Mercy 2) Go to Confession-preferably before that Sunday 3) Receive Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday 4) Respect the image of the Most Merciful Savior. (A picture will be displayed on the side altar on the day). 5) Be merciful to others by your actions, words and prayers. DIVINE MERCY NOVENA: The Divine Mercy Novena allows one to more fully experience the mercy that Jesus extends to all. The novena begins on Good Friday and can be said privately. There is one short prayer for each of the nine days and the Divine Mercy chaplet should be said at the same time. Pamphlets with the novena and the chaplet will be at each entrance of the Church.

CANOPY UPDATE Presently, we have received $5,530.00 towards the canopy. Our goal is $7,500. Please send donations to Fr. McKale's attention. Checks should be written out to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Thank you to all the many donors. Fr. Harold McKale / Parish Vicar Our Lady of Mount Carmel Rectory 235 E. State St. / Doylestown 18901-4770

Our Lady of Mount Carmel April 14, 2019

THE THREE DAYS The Easter Triduum of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year. It is not an annual passion play of the events from the Last Supper on Thursday to the empty tomb on Sunday. The Triduum is one single mystery, the paschal mystery. Some-thing from long ago and far away yet very close to our own world, our own struggle with living and dying. We need to celebrate the Triduum with our eyes always focused on the total message of the dying and rising of the Lord. We cannot separate the two.

THE PASCHAL MYSTERY That dying he destroyed our death, rising he restored our lives - is at the very heart of our lives. When we pray Morning Prayer or give thanks at night before eating, when we gather on Sunday morning for Eucharist, when we assemble to bury one of our own, we are part of the mystery. The rhythm of each day and week is marked by the sign of the cross: dying he destroyed... rising he restored!

THE PASCHAL FAST There is a time in every human life when we turn from food because we are filled with something else. Perhaps we are in mourning, or in love, or writing an article, or painting a picture or reading a wonderful novel. We fast because we are no longer hungry, but are utterly filled with something else. The Paschal Fast is being so filled by God that nothing else counts and other things would only distract. Fasting in this sense is not an act of sorrow, but leads to joy. Fasting in this sense is not a penance or an end in itself, but a submission to God, a waiting for God, a seeking of His presence, a readiness for His revelation - a revelation of the deepest love we will ever know.

COMMEMORATION OF THE LAST SUPPER To restore the unity of the Lord’s Passover and ours, the revision of the Order of Holy Week begun under Pius XII and continued after Vatican II made it clear that the Paschal Triduum begins on Thursday evening after sunset. Lent ends, therefore, on Thursday afternoon. The central theme of this time is that of the Lord giving himself for our salvation. The meal is a sacrifice, a prophetic gesture with which the Lord, in obedience to his Father and for love of us all, committed himself “unto death”. We should be able to come to appreciate how the Eucharistic meal is a sacrifice. This is underlined in the second reading 1 Corinthians, but also by the reading of Exodus account of the eating of the pasch, whose blood saves the Israelites from the angel of death. The death of the lamb saves the life of the people.

THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S PASSION Good Friday is a day of solemn fast. It is within this fast that the faithful gather to pray. The “house of the church”, the room where we gather weekly for Eucharist, is during this day a place of constant prayer and reflection. We come and go throughout the day, as our life permits, then we gather for the celebration of the Lord’s Passion in the evening. We center ourselves on the cross as it sums up the struggle between death and life as we have felt it within our hearts and as it has come to define our existence.

EASTER VIGIL The Sacramentary divides the Vigil into four elements. A brief service of light, the liturgy of the Word, when the Church meditates on all the wonderful things God has done for his people from the begin-ning; the liturgy of Baptism, when the new\ members of the Church are reborn as the day of resurrection approaches; and the liturgy of the Eucharist, when the whole Church is called to the table which the Lord has prepared for his people through his death and resurrection. In this night, the apex of the liturgical year, the beauty and richness of the vigil celebration is almost overwhelming. Once again, the wealth of our now restored tradition comes alive. As we celebrate it in sign and symbol, we also share it with our newest members. The service begins in darkness. The new fire and the Paschal Candle are lit. The invitation to keep vigil on this Passover of the Lord is issued. The Easter proclamation is sung. And in union with believers throughout the world, once again we tell our story from Genesis and Exodus and the prophets. It is a story of the God who created us and called us, who led us from slavery to freedom and who cares for us. The Lord calls us to be part of the new creation, the people of God. He appeals to all the deepest longing of our hearts and reminds us that it is He who loves us, forgives us and renews our hearts. All that is asked is our heartfelt consent, our willingness to follow, to pattern our lives on the mystery of this night, to die with the Lord so that we too, might have life. Now the waiting is over; it is the moment for our Easter Alleluia! Not having heard it since the beginning of the Lenten season, the assembly awaits it with anticipation. The Good News is proclaimed! The Baptism follows: The “Elect” symbolically go down under the waters of death, rise up to new life in Christ and are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Our vigil is not complete without the witness of faith and commitment of the new members. We in turn, renew our baptismal covenant. Now we rise as a body and publicly renew our determination to live out our baptismal promises, to renounce all that is evil and to live as faith-filled members of the Church.

EASTERTIME

Easter Sunday is both the final hours of the Triduum and the first of the great fifty days, which will end with Pentecost. Officially the Triduum ends with Sunday Evening Vespers.

SAVE THE DATE! Ladies of Mount Carmel

Monday June 24 to Thursday, June 27 More details to follow!

Our first grade students recently completed a Religion project about the many gifts that God gives to each of us. The students identified their three favorite gifts and described why each is important. Mrs. Dineen and Mrs. Morelli gave each student a gift-shaped posterboard to use as a template. They then decorated the front to represent the three gifts and attached their written papers to the back to use during oral presentations. This is one of the first projects that the students have had to write in full paragraph form and then present to the class! Very impressive! Ben: “Three of my favorite gifts are Jesus, my family and my life. Jesus is the most important gift because he’s the son of God and he can do miracles. I love my family because I have a lot of brothers and sisters and my Mom and Dad take care of me. I always thank God for my life because he made me. He gives so many gifts to everyone!” Tessa: “Three of my favorite gifts are my family, artistic ability and the ability to help others. I am thankful for my fami-ly because they love me and care for me. My artistic ability is a gift from God because I can draw someone a picture when they are sad to make them happy. I love to help people like helping my little brother Matthew learn to walk.” Emilia: “Three of my favorite gifts are family, animals and rainbows. I love my family because they support me. Animals are gifts from God because they bring me joy. Rainbows are a message from God and they are very colorful.” Delainey: “Three of my favorite gifts are my family, my friends and being a good dancer. My family is a gift from God because they give me kisses and hugs and take care of me when I am sick. I love my friends because they make me laugh and we have fun together. Being a good dancer is a gift because I can entertain people and make them smile.” Niko: “Three of my favorite gifts are family, chess and pets. My family is a gift from God because they love me. I love chess because it is fun. My pets are fluffy and friendly. Thank you God for these great gifts!” Julia: “Three of my favorite gifts are the love in my heart, my nona and animals. The love in my heart helps me to be nice to everyone. I am thankful for my nona because she invites us over to her house often. I am thankful for animals because they love me to pet them and they give me love back.” God bless, Dawn Parker

Prayer for an End to Infanticide The U.S. Senate recently failed to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, but that is not the end of the story. This bill, rooted in our most fundamental human values, is worth fighting for. It would prohibit infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an attempted abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her or his life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.

April 14, 2019 Our Lady of Mount Carmel

All of our ministries need and encourage new membership. Please consider joining, so we can maintain our vibrant and healthy Church. Our Church needs your time and talent! We will take the opportunity to present to our parishioners all the available ministries here at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. We have compiled an overview of what each ministry does and who the key contact person is. Our ministries are broken down into seven categories: Liturgical, Education, Faith Formation, Youth, Outreach, Support and Social. Our fourth category "Youth Ministries" is presented below.

Youth Our teen program is for students in grades 9 – 12. We provide fellowship among teens in a non-judgmental environment, where we put our faith into action. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month from September to May. Our group attends the 5:00 pm Youth Mass, followed by a gathering. Our teens participate in the Music Ministry, and as Lectors, Ushers, and Gift Bearers. We participate in many service projects throughout the year. Social events are planned, and guest speakers are scheduled to discuss issues that relate to teens. Come and visit. We would like to meet you and have you join us. If you would like more information, please email Ashley at the ministry office [email protected] CYO We welcome all parish children into our program. No child is turned away. We proudly represent our entire parish family in every endeavor we undertake. The spirit of athletic competition shines brightly within us. We strive to be the best among our competitors, and in the end, whether we are blessed with victory or fall short in defeat, our actions toward our opponents are always the same, “a hand extended with humility and dignity”. We have volleyball, football, basketball and track/cross country teams. Boy Scouts Troop 52 We are known as “The Campers” as we focus on adventurous outdoor activities for boys 11 to 18 years of age. For more information, please visit our website www.troop52campers.com or email us at [email protected] Cub Scouts Cub Scouts are a home and community-centered program designed to support family life for boys in first through fifth grades. Each scout learns to respect his home, country, God and all people. We have fun hiking, camping and exploring our world around us. If you would like to join our program, please contact Kat Broadhead at [email protected]
