Timothy Howard
in Concert
Friday, March 23, 7:30 PM
Dr. Timothy Howard has prepared an interesting and varied program for our NUMC pipe organ. Not only will he play music by Buxtehude and Bach (very Baroque period), but also by some of the melodi-ous Romantic Period composers (Mendelssohn and How-ells). There will be a light-hearted and cheerful Roulade by Seth Bingham, spectacularly played on the pedals only! The tour de force will be the exciting Final of the 6th Symphony by Vierne.
A multi-talented musician, Timothy teaches at CSUN and is the Organist / Director of Music at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, where he administers a Friends of Music series for the church. He also worked as a composer / arranger /collaborator / performer on Christopher Parkening’s Simple Gift on Angel Records and as arranger for pop / rock singer Brian Reeves on Never Looking Back on Briro Records. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from USC and degrees from Westminster Choir College and Biola University. Dr. Howard has agreed to dedicate this program to NUMC member Wally Kryder, who passed away recently. Wally was dedicated to the music programs and especially to the organ at NUMC. He loved the choir and the handbells, but the Schantz pipe organ was special to him every Sunday. Thank you, Timothy, for allowing us to make this dedica-tion. Tickets are $25/person, $7/student with ID, and are avail-able at www.northridgeumc.org/fom or the church office.

The Preacher’s Part I have always had a love for the poetry of E. E.
Cummings. Perhaps it is his disregard for conventional
English. Perhaps it was his spirituality, being the son of a
Presbyterian pastor. His poetry has a strong affirmation of
life, as in “I thank You God”:
i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
As a speech major in college, I often turned to
Cummings for my recitations. He lays the words on the
page so that there is a visual delight as well as a cognitive
response to his message.
O sweet spontaneous
earth how often have
the
doting
fingers of
prurient philosophers pinched
and
poked
thee
,has the naughty thumb
of science prodded
thy
beauty
But it is just as likely that it was his sheer exuberance
for life, his love of childhood fun and precociousness,
which caught my attention and bonded me with him for
eternity.
For example, my favorite poem by Cummings is “in
Just-spring”. The poem depicts children running around
gleefully on a spring day, splashing in puddles, inventing
roles, playing children’s games, and always returning to
the balloonman, who calls them to look up and see a world
that is present and expanding, “far and wee”. Just imagine
the wet muddy footprints on the pavement as they dance
around on a spring day:
in Just-
spring
when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman
whistles far and wee
and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's
spring
when the world is puddle-wonderful
the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing
from hop-scotch and jump-rope and
it's
spring
and
the
goat-footed
balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee
Cummings loved spring; the resurgence of life, the
energy of a warming day, the radiant green of a new leaf
on a tender twig, and the joy of love simply given and
held.
Jesus is eternal spring, he who holds hope for us in
each new day, and smiles with child-like wonder at our
failures, and loves us in spite of ourselves.
May spring bring a spiritual rebirth to you this year.
May Christ’s resurrection be a rising of your soul as well.
Joyous Spring to you!
Love,

Thank You
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
Greetings of Peace and Solidarity,
On behalf of my congregation (Kaingin UMC) in Jaen
Nueva Ecija, Philippines, we would like to express our
deepest thanksgiving for your unending support to our
church. Members were very glad to have bibles that
you have brought to us. They will really help us a lot.
Because we have our bible studies in the different or-
ganizations every weekday, it is very useful for the con-
tinuous learning for the life and ministry of the Lord.
We also appreciate so much for the choir robes that you
have given us; timely, we use them every Sunday during
our service of the Church.
We hope and pray that the Lord continues to bless
your congregation and your family as well. May the
spirit of love through Jesus Christ be with us all the
time.
Thank you very much, and we are looking forward to
your warm support. God bless!!!
With love,
Rev. Ronalyn S. Valerio Administrative Pastor, Kaingin UMC

LA Phil Live: Gustavo Dudamel and Herbie Hancock Celebrate Gershwin
(in glorious IMAX and Surround-Sound!)
March 18, 7 PM, Edwards IMAX Theatre, Santa Clarita
Dinner at Buca di Beppo Restaurant optional
As part of the LA Phil’s ongoing outreach program, this
IMAX presentation will be broadcast nationwide for one
night only. Pre-recorded from the LA Phil’s 2011-12 sea-
son Opening Night Concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall,
this includes some of the composer’s best-loved works
including the Cuban Overture, An American in Paris and
Rhapsody in Blue, as well as intimate improvisations by
Hancock of Embraceable You and Someone to Watch Over
Me. The event also features exclusive footage of Hancock
– the LA Phil’s Creative Chair for Jazz – in his home,
playing Gershwin and providing insights into his improvi-
sational process.
For those who signed up at Homecoming for “social
events”, this is the first offering of this year, with more to
come!
All are welcome. There will be a sign-up sheet in the
office with directions, or contact Peggy Walters @ 818-
632-5915 or Joann DeSantis @ 818-993-8668.
Tickets are available online through Edwards Cinema or
can be purchased at the door.
From Jazz Vespers…
Jazz Vespers fans are saddened about the passing of
Frank Marocco, one of our most popular Jazz Vesper mu-
sicians. He was always a supporter of what we have been
doing and was a man of faith. Perhaps you had the oppor-
tunity to enjoy his great accordion jazz and classical con-
certs or recordings. He played with Bob Hope, Beach
Boys, Les Brown, Pavarotti and more, and laid down hun-
dreds of movie and TV soundtracks. He was listed as one
of the top three accordion players in the world and one of
the world's most recorded players. But even more than
his music, he was respected as a wonderful friend by
many. We will miss his winning smile.

SUMMER CAMP
Santa Barbara District Junior and Senior High Camp will be held at Camp Arroyo Grande this summer
from July 22 to July 28. (For youth entering 6th grade through 2012 grads).
Cost is $350/student for the week. The church has financial “Camperships” available on request.
Registration is open, and applications are available in the church office and on the web. Pick up an ap-
plication and flier NOW.
The Youth Group has enjoyed increased attend-ance since switching to 4 to 6 PM. We hope every-one will start to plan on some fun times in the YAC as we move into Daylight Savings Time and longer warmer afternoons.
We are already planning some fun summer events which we want to get on everyone’s calendar.
We look forward to welcoming the incoming Middle Schoolers in June with a Pool Party — date and time to be announced — held right after school is out.
We are planning to make Tuesdays Youth Day at NUMC — alternating one week of fun and one week of service throughout the summer — so block off Tuesdays right now and all summer long.
We will not be going to Costa Rica this summer; look for that trip in 2013. But we have a Mini-Mission planned for July 8th to 10th at a fun surprise location.
Those who are in town will want to plan on help-ing out at Vacation Bible School July 23 to 27.
Several of our youth are planning on attending one
or two of the Cal-Pac Youth Camps. Check the
church website for a complete listing of camps for
Middle and Senior High Campers.

One Great Hour of Sharing
In the past three issues of the Methodist, there have been ar-
ticles about UMCOR. This coming Sunday, March 18 is their
“One Great Hour of Sharing”. This offering is essential to
them. Remember, UMCOR receives no World Service funds,
so please give generously.
Giving is easy: Make your check payable to NUMC and
write UMCOR in the memo line. Offering envelopes will be
available in the Narthex by the UMCOR display.
Please join United Methodists everywhere by participating in
this special offering that supports UMCOR’s vital work.

The Bike-A-Thon begins at NVCS’s campus,
15453 Rayen Street in North Hills, with registra-
tion / check-in at 8 AM, with their Community Fair
following, from 11 AM to 2 PM. Riders make a
tour of the San Fernando Valley, where they meet
mileage goals, raising money to support the agency
and its services for the community.
A fun event for both experienced and inexperi-
enced riders, NVCS has enjoyed watching the num-
ber of participating riders and supporters increase
each year. Rider information / registration / dona-
tion packets are available in the NUMC church of-
fice. During coffee hour on Sundays, sign up to
support a rider from NUMC.
Join us for the opening ceremonies, to cheer on
the riders at one of their many stops (including
NUMC at about 10:30 AM), at the finish line, or as
one of the pack of riders to bicycle 20 miles to sup-
port NVCS! And NEW THIS YEAR, the Family
Fair that begins at 11 AM will have a Tricked-out
Bike Contest, games, booths, food, and fun activi-
ties for the entire family!
NUMC will be sponsoring and volunteering for
two children’s activities at the NVCS Community
Fair – a Bouncy and a Trike-a-Thon.
Volunteers, please talk to Amybeth Lake for sup-
port at NUMC stop and to Mike Easterly for sup-
port at NVCS.
WISH FOR CHANGE?
People in parks or tourist spots often come across
wishing wells. One can toss in some change, make a
wish, and it might come true – may-
be. It has been estimated that over
$325,000 per year is tossed into
wishing wells and fountains nation-
ally. The mind reels!
Do you wish that the world was a
better place? Have we got a deal for
you! It is a sure thing too! You can
figure out the rest. The jars are in
the Narthex. Your change will help
CHANGE THE WORLD.
Come and See Which Way Home
Church and Society will be screening
Which Way Home on March 26th, at
7 PM in the Kendall Building.
In 2006, Rebecca Cammisa received a
Fulbright Scholar Grant to document the
plight of the children left behind when
their families travel to the United States to find work. This
Oscar-nominated-film is the result of her journey. Cammisa
and her crew follow a trio of children who set out on their own
from their Latin America abodes on a dangerous trek through
Mexico en route to the U.S. border and — they hope — to their
families' embrace.
Running time is 83 minutes. The film is not rated.
