Homeowners embarking on akitchen remodel typically mustselect the style, the quality ofcraftsmanship and the materialsthat meet their unique valuesand project goals. With the press-ing need to increase energy effi-ciency and conserve resources, green remodeling continues togain in popularity.

“Incorporating green elementsinto a kitchen remodel is nolonger considered just a passingfad, but a way of life,” said DickTitus, executive vice president ofthe Kitchen CabinetManufacturers Association(KCMA). “Homeowners feel asocial responsibility to chooseproducts that are safe for theenvironment and their family’swelfare.”

Kitchen cabinets could take upas much as half of a kitchen reno-vation budget, so it’s vital forhomeowners wanting to “green”their kitchens to choose a qualitycabinet manufacturer with rootsin environmental sustainability.KCMA’s EnvironmentalStewardship Program (ESP) cansimplify the quest. ESP enablescabinet manufacturers to demon-

strate their commitment to envi-ronmental sustainability andhelps consumers easily identifyenvironmentally friendly prod-ucts. After meeting the certifica-tion requirements in areas suchas product resource management, air quality, process resource man-agement, environmental steward-ship and community relations, companies earn the ESP seal todisplay on their products. As acriterion in the NAHB GreenBuilding Standard, the first ANSIapproved green building rating

system for residential construc-tion in the U.S., ESP sets the stan-dard for homeowners looking tointegrate affordable eco-friendlycabinets into their home.

ESP encourages the followingpractices by awarding points tomanufacturers who qualify:

Certified by a recognized sustainable forestry program

Wood products, especiallycabinets, are an environmentallyfriendly choice for a number of

reasons. One reason is that woodis a naturally renewable resource, meaning new trees will grow inplace of those that have alreadybeen harvested. ESP certificationawards points to manufacturerswho use wood in their cabinetsthat is certified through a recog-nized sustainable forestry pro-gram. Programs such as theForest Stewardship Council (FSC)and Sustainable ForestryInitiative (SFI) put a label ontheir wood products to showconsumers that the resourcesremoved from the forest are at alevel the forest is capable ofrenewing without damaging itsfuture. In doing so, these prac-tices preserve the environmentand valuable forest resources.

Use of materials with low levels of formaldehyde

To earn points in ESP’s airquality category, manufacturersmust prove that 80 percent ofparticleboard, medium densityfiberboard, hardboard and ply-wood used in the cabinets meetthe low formaldehyde emissions

Nature’s Corner opened itsdoors for the first time on Oct. 15,1975, as a tropical plan store onGlenway Avenue at Prout’sCorner. Houseplants, macrame’s,pet rocks, and paisley decormade this mid ’70s plant store avery current ‘happening’ place toshop.

The owner, Tom Oestreicher, had a passion for growing plants,a thirst for knowledge aboutplants and the willingness to talkat great lengths about them. Abond was formed with ever‘plant lover’ customer and busi-ness relationships were based onsolid foundations of mutualrespect, quality products and truedollar value. That is still thefoundation of Nature’s Corner 35years later!

Lots of changes have occurredin the 35 year growth of Nature’sCorner. It’s location is now asprawling 2-acre facility at 1029Ebenezer Road, in DelhiTownship. The wooden green-houses here were of the original69 greenhouses that gave Delhithe “Floral Paradise of the

Midwest” title. Today the historicgreenhouses are still used togrow thousands of annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, roses and aquatic plants for theretail public.

Like a caterpillar transforminginto the butterfly, Nature’s Cornerhas undergone continuouschange in order to stay fresh andcompetitive in today’s challeng-ing business world. The once tat-tered and neglected greenhousesare now a colorful, fun and edu-cating place to shop for almostany plant or gardening need.

The owner, Beth Oestreicher, has devoted herself to creatingthe most colorful, customerfriendly retail greenhouses in the

Tristate area. “High qualityplants, new to the trade or oldfavorites are grown right on ourproperty,” said Beth. “We selectour plant starts from the world-wide sources and grow themhere so they readily adapt to ourcustomers’ home conditions.”

The 35 years of change haskept Nature’s Corner constantlyon the look-out for ‘what’s next.’The welcome change, accordingto both Beth and Tom.

“It’s what keeps us fresh andnew. This year we have a newWeb site which we are all excitedabout. It gives anyone a view ofwho and what we are. The Website has specials, plant tips, coupons, pricing for 2010, infor-

mation about our employees andemployment. Visit the Web site atwww.naturescornerplants.comand let us know what you think.”

Beth and Tom would like tosay “thank you” for your 35years of support and letting themshare with you.

They are grateful for each oftheir wonderful customers, newor old. They may have changedfrom their beginnings in 1975,but their business basics offriendship, courtesy, quality andvalue are still here and alwayswill be!

It may be a little cool outside, but homeowners are alreadydreaming of creating beautifulgarden settings around theirhomes come spring. Landscapingsuccess doesn’t have to be hit ormiss, and if it has been for you, itmay be time to call in a profes-sional landscape designer.

Why? Because in the long run, hiring a landscape designer cancost less than doing it yourself. You’ll get a “doable” design cre-ated right the first time, savingyou the costof repeatedtries at get-ting it rightor plantingthe wrongplants in thewrongspots. Aprofessionallandscapedesignerenvisionscreativesolutions tothe mostdifficult out-door challenges - problemsthey’ve more than likely solvedbefore.

Plus, a high-quality landscapeincreases home sale prices up to10.8 percent, compared to a homewith a simply average landscape, according to the Journal ofEnvironmental Horticulture.

Here are some tips from pro-fessional landscape designers tocreate your dream garden.

First, consider your space andany “issues” that it has. Hidingan unsightly air conditioningunit, adding privacy and chang-ing boring views to beautifulones are issues that landscapedesigners face with many clients.

“As a certified landscapedesigner through the Associationof Professional LandscapeDesigners, I see the big picture,”said Boston-based landscapedesigner Maria von Brincken,APLD. “A designer sees the prob-lems that you see, and often theones you don’t, and can offersolutions to create beautiful, functional and earthy-friendlylandscapes to add to your lives.”

Next, do your homework. Tearout favorite pictures from gar-dening magazines, and startmaking a file on what you wouldlike for your dream garden. While not everything might bepossible for your garden, it willgive your landscape designer avisual starting point. Don’t forgetabout hardscape such as patios, decks and fencing; designers canhelp with these also.

Take your time. Brinckenwarns of the temptation to

impulsivelybuy plantsat a gardencenter andattempt agardenmake-over.This can bea costlygamble forthose with-out experi-ence. Manyhomeown-ers find thatit takes thehelp of a

designer to create a well-plannedlandscape project that includesboth plants and hardscape.

While there is a cost to hiring alandscape designer, it is ultimate-ly more economical to work withan expert to create a plan specificto your yard. The project is com-pleted in a timely manner andwithin budget when you takeyour time and create a landscapeplan. Expect to spend about 10percent of the total cost of theproject on the design.

Consider what you want toachieve with your landscape.“People are busy, and they wantto have an outdoor space thatmakes them feel comfortable, notfrustrated and worn out fromgardening chores,” said JudyNauseef, APLD, of Iowa City,Iowa, and president of theAssociation of ProfessionalLandscape Designers(www.apld.org).

“They also want to maximizetheir investment in their home,”she adds. ‘Having a well-

level of the California AirResources Board (CARB)Compwood ATCM. Suchmaterials must be third-party certified by aCARB-approved lab tomeet low formaldehydeemission standards.

The CARB CompwoodATCM is the lowestformaldehyde standardin the world.Formaldehyde is a natu-rally occurring substancethat can be produced bythe human body. It isubiquitous and a compo-nent of hundreds of con-sumer items.

Eco-friendly manufacturing process

When shopping for eco-friendly cabinets, it isimportant to not onlyexamine the cabinets, butalso the process that wasused to manufacture them.

Criteria for processresource managementincludes that the manu-facturer have an activerecycling program forwastes, an energy-conser-vation program or anoth-er form of environmental-management system.

On top of conservingresources, these practicescan reduce the emissionof pollutants and green-house gases, and aid indecreasing landfills, all of

which have clear societalbenefits.

Commitment to the environment

When purchasing ESPcertified cabinets, home-owners can rest assuredthat the manufacturer iscommitted to both theenvironment and theircommunity. ESP’s envi-ronmental stewardshipcriteria require that themanufacturer have a writ-ten policy stating a firmcommitment to protect theenvironment. The com-munity relations categoryencourages the manufac-turer to demonstrate com-munity involvement andleadership through service

or charitable organiza-tions and observe all fed-eral, state and local envi-ronmental requirements.

With almost 150 ESPcertified cabinetry compa-nies to choose from, home-owners have the ability toselect environmentallyresponsible cabinetry tai-lored to their needs, nomatter their price, style, finish and wood preference– just look for the ESP seallocated on the base cabinet.

designed landscape givesthe homeowner more liv-ing space and also helpswith resale value.”

Research and reach outto a few landscapedesigners. Be sure tointerview several design-ers to find one who meetsyour needs and personali-ty. Review the portfolio orWeb site of each designer, and visit some of theirwork if possible. Finally, ifyou have a budget inmind, share this with thedesigner up front.

Get ready to get dirty.“You can hire a landscapedesigner for a range ofservices. You mightchoose to hire a designerfor a two hour consulta-tion for ideas and sugges-tions that you mightimplement yourself,” saidPatricia St. John, APLD, ofBerkeley, Calif., andAPLD incoming presi-dent. “You could also hirea designer to give you acomplete design for yourgarden. When it comes toimplementing the designyou have choices --involve the designerwhile you hire a recom-mended landscape con-tractor or even do some ofthe work yourself.”

Also, you do not haveto complete the wholeplan at once. A landscapecan be installed over aperiod of time as well.Homeowners can decidewhat areas are mostimportant and start there.

Take the first step to adream garden. With thehelp of a professionallandscape designer, youcan create a plan that willwork for your landscapeand you. Finding adesigner is easy: visitwww.apld.org.

Spring is a time of new begin-nings. Flowers and plants areblooming, the sun is shining andthe weather is finally gettingwarmer after winter’s chill. Sowhy not bring some of spring’sbeauty into your home so youcan enjoy it day after day?

“Some people think they haveto purchase new accessories torefresh their home for spring.Nothing could be further from thetruth,” said Christine Silverman, director of small project paints forRust-Oleum. “There are some easy, affordable ways to bring springinto your home by ‘upcycling’ thethings you already have. Thesesimple projects are fun ways togive a new beginning to the thingsyou have sitting in the garage orbasement, while keeping them outof the land fill. It’s a win-win forboth you and Mother Nature.”

Bring your flower garden indoors

A great way to perk up a homefor spring is by decorating roomswhere you spend the most time -like the living or family room orkitchen - with flowers. By spraypainting flower pots you alreadyown bright yellow, purple orgreen and grouping them intoindoor “gardens,” you will givethem new life, while bringing thegreat outdoors inside. Considerusing Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover2X, a fast-drying spray paint thatworks well on wood, wicker, metal, plaster or unglazed ceram-ic and resists chipping and fad-ing. Or, place your “new” potteryon wrought iron plant stands orpedestal tables painted in coordi-nating colors to add a burst ofcolor to any room.

Winds of changeAdding color to a ceiling or

oscillating fan is a great way toadd a pop of color in an unexpect-ed way. Rediscover a fan you havestored in the attic. Or find a good

deal on a fan that complimentsyour personality at a flea marketor discount store and bring ithome for a facelift. Covering thefan in just one coat of inexpensivespray paint in a fresh spring colorwill create a conversation piecethat will last throughout the year. For this project, try using Rust-Oleum Universal spray paint. Itsunique trigger spray makes it easyto use at any angle and it can beused on any surface – plastic, metal, wood and more.

Bring the outdoor patio furniture inside

Remember the old wickerchair and loveseat you picked upat Aunt Ida’s garage sale? They’re not just for outside.Spray paint them with one coatof Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover2X with Advanced Double CoverTechnology in a bright springcolor like Aqua or Green Appleand suddenly you have new seat-ing that is perfect for your sun-room, front porch or foyer.

Restore and renew flea market finds

Flea markets are full of treas-ures that sometimes just need alittle TLC to give them new life.Save that dingy chandelier, tar-nished lamp or outdated book-case from the trash by restoring itwith a fresh coat of spray paint, which is sometimes all that isneeded to turn garage sale or fleamarket finds into treasures.

For hundreds of easy projectideas to help you decorate andtransform your home, visitwww.paintideas.com. Before youknow it you’ll have splashes ofsunshine, spring color and greatconversation pieces throughoutyour home without spendingmuch time or money. Say good-bye to the winter blues and helloto some springtime cheer.

Most people don’t understandwhy their roof has failed or whyit never lasts its warranty.

Roof Time has the answer.“It has to do with what I like

to call the ‘Energy Trilogy,’ RoofTime Project ManagerJDShoemaker explains.“Ventilation, insulation, and radi-ation.”

A common problem is thatthere is not enough insulation.Roof Time uses the amount rec-ommended by Energy Star.

Ventilation and insulation arerequired by code, but radiation isnot. Therefore, most in the roof-ing industry don’t take it intoconsideration, according toShoemaker.

Roof Time uses a radiant bar-rier, a metallic foil material, thatreduces the transmission of radi-ated heat. Using this techniqueRoof Time can add another 10years to your roof’s life.

These factors will pay divi-dends, as you’ll be able to save

on your monthly energy bill.“We have the knowledge,”

said Shoemaker.“We have quali-

ty products.But more

that ourintegrity

depends onour service.”

Client Rick Beckettknows this best. Beckett restswell at night because he has com-plete confidence in the roof overhis head.

“I knew nothing about roofs,”the homeowner admits.

“But those at Roof Time spenttime with me and helped meunderstand. They told me whatwas needed, what they would doand they did it.The experiencewas fantastic.”

Beckett recommends RoofTime, because he was satisfied, not only with their expertise, buttheir impeccable service.

“All those in the roof industryhave to ask why their businessexists,” explains Shoemaker.“We exist to serve.”

Roof Time has won Angie’sList Super Service Award for thepast four years in a row, as wellas, was voted Favorite Roofer byThe Community Press readers in2009.

Do images of flowering trellises ladenwith yellow, pink, green and purple bloomsdance through your dreams? You may beready for some warm spring-like tempera-tures, but the weather outside is still a littlefrightful. Ignore the weather and bringspring inside with some indoor gardening.

Not only does bringing spring inside helpbrighten your home, but houseplants canalso improve the quality of the air you’rebreathing. A NASA study found that house-plants remove up to 87 percent of toxicindoor air inside a sealed chamber within 24hours.

By planting now, while winter is still inthe air, you will have vegetables, herbs andflowers primed for transplanting whenwarmer weather finally arrives. And sincethey’re inside, you can watch the plants asthey shoot their little green stems out of thefresh dirt, monitoring them as they grow.

• Use loose potting soil to promote rootgrowth. Outside, worms and insects tunnelthrough the dirt, naturally breaking it up tohelp plants spread their roots. To mimic theireffect indoors, use potting soil mixed withpeat moss, vermiculite and perlite to create alight texture that won’t compact after a cou-ple of waterings.

• Make sure the natural light is adequate. Some plants like direct sunlight and must belocated near a south-facing window, whileothers prefer a few hours of indirect light. But to really keep your herbs and flowerslooking strong all season long, consider usingartificial light like the Grow Light Pro Whitefrom Wards.com, which can alsohelp you get your spring gardenstarted early with seedlings. TheGrow Light has four lights thatcan be turned on as a unit orindividually, and it has anadjustable bottom shelf soyou can alter the light levelas your plants grow.

When plants don’t get thelight they need, they start to appearthin and frail. As your plants begin togrow, make sure to rotate the pots so thestems grow straight, rather than bend-ing unnaturally toward the source oflight.

• Keep the humidity level above50 percent with a humidifier. Notonly will your plants appreciate theextra moisture, but so will you. Whenthe humidity drops below 50 percent, most plants suffer from water loss

through their leaves, and it’s difficult toregain that water balance, even with frequentwatering.

• Really bring spring inside your homewith beautiful pots and decorating accents.Visit Wards.com to find beautiful and cre-ative birdhouses that not only are functional,

but stylish enough to hang inside.Consider hanging a wire birdhouse

in the shape of an acorn in thekitchen window, or using a set oftwo birdhouses as a unique deco-ration for your entryway.

• Mix art and fun togetherwith some ivy. Ivy topiariesare very easy to grow, andthere are many creativeplanters and forms you can

use to support the ivy as itwinds its way toward the sun. Are

you a music fan? A guitar and musicstand with little pots incorporated intothe design can help brighten up yourliving room. Or maybe you prefer avintage look created by placing aMadeline Dress Form over your vines, allowing them to grow and constructthe skirt.

In December, PresidentObama urged homeowners tomake their home more energyefficient. He suggested there is alot more we can do to reduce ourcarbon footprint.

In his now famous “Insulationis Sexy” speech, he explainedthat homes and office buildingsconsume nearly 40 percent of theenergy we use, and contributealmost 40 percent of the carbonpollution we produce.

“Homes built in the first halfof the last century use about 50percent more energy than homesbuilt today because most of ourhomes and offices aren’t energyefficient,” he explained.

Obama also suggested that thesimple act of retrofitting build-ings or homes, including insulat-ing them, is the fastest, easiestand cheapest way to save money.

“Insulation is sexy stuff,”Obama said. “Here’s what’s sexy

about it – saving money!”The federal government has

extended the tax credit through2010 so more homeowners cantake advantage of the program.

USA Insulation wants to helphomeowners save money in 2010.

“Insulating your home is thebest investment you can make toyour home,” said Steve Cikach, president of USA Insulation.

“The federal government hasextended the tax credit for 2010,so it’s basically a no-brainer onwhether or not to insulate yourhome. The only decision youneed to make is ‘when to insu-late.’ ”

Most homes built before 1975were not required to have insula-tion. If your home is 35 years orolder, your utility bills are proba-bly higher than they should be.

In his speech, Obama used asimple example to get his pointacross about saving energy. “If

you saw $20 bills floating out thewindow into the atmosphere, you’d try to figure out how youcan keep that.”

USA Insulation installsPremium Foam insulation withthe highest R-value in the indus-try. R-value is the amount ofresistance to the movement oftemperature through the wallsand ceilings.

USA’s Premium Foam insula-tion’s R-value is 5.1 per inch. Itgoes in the wall cavity as a foam, then hardens between the walls, acting as a “blanket” that pro-tects your home from the temper-ature extremes.

In addition to lower utilitybills, insulation has other bene-fits. Your home will no longerhave those “drafty” areas or tem-perature fluctuations between theupstairs and downstairs.

USA’s premium foam acts as asound barrier to the outside

world, so your home will be qui-eter. Insulation is important toprospective buyers, and homesthat are insulated have higherresale values.

Most homeowners don’t thinkthey can insulate their brick orstucco home, but they will besurprised to learn that they can,Cikach said.

He said that with brick andstucco, USA Insulation is able tomake smaller holes – a half inchto be exact – to apply the foam.USA Insulation can fit in mostmortar joints without damagingthe brick.

USA Insulation also can matchthe mortar colors to the brick orstucco material.
