Make use of fall’s free-fertilizerBy Joe Lamp’l
Scripps Howard News Service
Fall is in the air. The mornings are cool and crisp, the leaves are changing and college football is infull swing. It’s clearly my favorite time of year. Butthose reasons aren’t what make it so great for me.As lovely as deciduous trees are when their leavesare in glorious shades of red, yellow, orange andrust, my favorite part of this season is after theleaves have fallen. Once the now-brown leaves be-gin to blanket my lawn and beds, I know that it iscompost time.
To be clear, I don’t relish the work of clearing offthose leaves any more than you do. But I do have adeep appreciation for what they will mean to mygarden and landscape a few months from now, so Iam happy to prepare the way.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Where mostpeople see leaf debris as trash, along with hours ofraking, bagging and hauling, I see garden bedsblanketed in rich organic compost. Before they fallto the ground, leaves contain 50 to 80 percent ofthe nutrients that are extracted from the earth bytree roots. I will recycle this precious resource to re-plenish the soil and nourish all that grows within it.
As the leaves break down, earthworms will feaston them and then burrow deeper into the soil, de-
positing castings, and thus adding even more valu-able nutrients and oxygen while improvingdrainage in the process. Beneficial fungi and bacte-ria will also assist in decomposition, consumingthis raw leaf material and returning it in a nutrient-rich form that can be utilized by plant and treeroots more efficiently and effectively than anythingman has ever created.
Within weeks after these shredded leaves are ap-plied around my garden beds, they’ll begin a trans-formation into composted organic matter that pro-motes the life of soil-dwelling organisms. Which inturn fortifies the plants and trees to be more pest-and disease-resistant. And what makes compostedorganic matter amazing is that no matter what con-dition your soil is in to begin with, compost willhelp make loose soil retain moisture, and compact-ed soil will drain better.
As much as I relish this gift of nature for my gar-den, I see another opportunity to justify its use inthe name of environmental stewardship. By keepingleaves, grass clippings and other yard waste athome, we can reduce overall landfill volume by 20percent. Rather than ending up as unnecessarytrash, these organic amendments could be going in-to our own gardens to enrich the soil while reduc-ing the need for supplemental fertilizers and otherunnecessary chemicals.

The “modern” of the new millennium is taking aturn from the past. Extremist modern decorating –with angled edges, geometric shapes and cube-in-spired items – has evolved. Today’s soft-modern iswelcoming and easy to live in – with delicate de-signs, flowing lines and understated details. Up-to-date and unfussy, this new modern look is fresh andc o m f o rt a b l e .
“Soft modern decorating is really the wave of thef u t u re , ” says Judy Riley, vice president of design atMoen. “It bypasses all the fleeting trends and fea-tures a comfortable, confident look that still man-ages to be fresh and current. Plus, its style is trulytimeless – with clean, simple lines and a spacious, uncluttered feel – the soft modern approach willlook as good in 10 years as it does today.”
Featuring soft modern style cues, highlights of the Fina faucet from ShowHouse by Moen include its high-arc,marquise-shaped spout, lever handle and contemporary-shaped base. The beautifully designed faucet also features aflow-optimized aerator for water savings. (ARA)
New look for homes isfresh and comfortable
To begin integrating soft modern style cuesin your home, try these tips.
• Light, fresh colors form the ideal backdropfor this decorating style. If you’re worried thatneutral tones will show scuffs and dirt spots, don’t – paints, such as Porcelain from Pratt &Lambert are manufactured to be extremelydurable. Porcelain actually allows you to scrubthe walls without damaging the paint finish, soany accidental dirt marks or spills can easily becleaned.
• Following the direction of the walls, floor-ing should be neutral, comfortable to the footand easy to maintain. Luxury vinyl tile, such asNAFCO by Tarkett, features attractive de-signs to fit any room of your house and closelymimics the classic, sophisticated looks of au-thentic tile, plank, stone, slate and other natu-ral textures.
• When considering lighting, make the mostof natural light from windows and skylights. For accent lighting, try small pendant lightsand wall-mounted lights – which can disperselight throughout the room for a soft, romantic
effect.• Furniture should be relaxed and comfort-
able – think sectional, overstuffed couches andchairs. Another trademark look of the softmodern style is that everything doesn’t haveto match – an unmatched look is completelyappropriate for this welcoming decoratingtrend.
Once you’ve initiated the overall soft mod-ern decor style in your home, you can choosecertain rooms in which to concentrate. Agood rule of thumb is to start with the roomsyou use most, such as the kitchen, bathroomand bedroom.
• In the kitchen, the focal point should beyour dining table. Any shape will coordinatewell with a soft modern flair. However a solidwood table is not only beautiful, but is alsoeasy to care for and virtually lasts forever. An-other nice option fitting of this design style is aglass-topped table. You can get the best ofboth worlds with Crate & Barrel’s Halo table, which features a beautiful glass top that’s per-fectly flat on the surface but has a deep,
light-refracting reverse bevel on the under-side. A solid chestnut wood base echoes thehalo with its own center top ring in a deep, rich cognac.
• In the bathroom, concentrate on the of-ten-used sink area. Here, it’s the faucet thatshould take center stage. For a clean, unclut-tered look to complement a stylish sink, trythe new Fina single-handle lavatory faucetfrom ShowHouse by Moen. Featuring softmodern style cues, highlights of the faucet in-clude its high-arc, marquise-shaped spout, lever handle and contemporary-shaped base. The beautifully designed faucet also features aflow-optimized aerator for water savings.
“We ’re finding that homeowners are lookingfor softer, modern styles featuring smoothlines, curved surfaces and rounded features,”says Shawn Hardy, ShowHouse brand manag-er. “The Fina collection offers a unique combi-nation of modern styling with graceful, elegantdetails – and now provides homeowners addi-tional design options with the single-handlefaucet.”
Additionally, the Fina faucet has been certi-fied to meet WaterSense criteria, meaning thefixture meets the Environmental ProtectionAgency’s guidelines as an environmentally re-sponsible and efficient product. The faucetflows at 1.5 gallons per minute (gpm), versusthe traditional flow of 2.2 gpm – providingconsumers the sensational water experiencethey are accustomed to, while reducing waterusage by up to 32 percent.
• Finally, in the bedroom, the center of at-tention should be the bed. Look for strongheadboards which don’t overwhelm the roomand add your personal flair to the style. Pot-tery Barn offers a number of styles which fit asoft modern design style – including the inno-vative Stratton Smart Technology headboard, which provides several built-in storage optionsas well as a centralized plug-in point for lamps, clocks, cell phones and more.
To add the finishing touch to your newlydecorated home, place carefully selected ac-cessories in each room.

Paintings hold morethan visual appealBy Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson
Scripps Howard News Service
Dear Helaine and Joe: I inherited two paintings of sail-ing ships about which I would like some information. Oneis named “Racing to Bermuda” and signed by J. Arnold. The same artist painted the second, titled “Macquarie.”Are they valuable? –A . W.
Dear A.W.: Somepaintings have hugemonetary values, butthe majority of paint-ings that most peoplehang on their walls donot. The primary valueof this latter group is inthe aesthetic appealthey have for their own-ers, or perhaps in thesentimental and familialconnections they mayre p re s e n t .
Before the advent ofphotography, if a familyhad a painting on thewall, it was probablythat of an ancestor orperhaps a depiction ofthe homeowner(s) or children. If, however, the picture waspurely decorative, it was likely to be a landscape or – if thefamily lived near the water – a seascape.
The majority of these seascapes or maritime paintings weredone in the Dutch or English tradition, and there are manycollectors in the United States and Europe who find themcompellingly attractive.
Images with human figures performing tasks, ships tossedin turbulent seas, ships in famous military engagements andships with flags that are identifiable are among the most ea-gerly collected maritime paintings. As to who might havepainted these two particular works, there are two choices –one is John Arnold, and the other is Jay Arnold.
There is some thought that these may be one and the sameartist, but that is open to some conjecture and no positiveproof either way could be found.
These two paintings appear to be both in his style and en-compass specific subjects that he often depicted. Unfortu-nately, there is no biographical information about this artistthat we could find, except that a number of his paintingshave come up for sale in 2007 and 2008.
Jay Arnold is a mid-20th-century artist whose work titled“Macquarie” sold for $400 at Myers Fine Art in St. Peters-burg, Fla., on Nov. 30, 2008. This vibrant painting is a nightscene, and should be valued in the $800 to $1,000 range forinsurance purposes.
We would like to have known the size of both of thesepaintings, but we feel that “Racing to Bermuda” is worth atad less than “Macquarie” and should be valued for insurancepurposes in the $600 to $700 range.

Spiders
Carol O’Meara
Colorado StateUniversity Extension
A tarantula came to live in my office recently, which means the other staff leave me alonemore often than I’m used to. He’s a cute littlething, about the size of a Buick, but despite theenormous binder sitting on top of his cage, theoffice pool on when he’ll escape keeps gettingl a rg e r.
Native to the southeastern part of the state, this Oklahoma brown tarantula (Aphonopelmahentzi) was captured doing what all males ofhis ilk do once they approach the end of theirlifespan: wander about looking for love. Afteryears spent quietly tending the burrow, whenthe end is near, males go forth into the worldsearching for a mate.
Too often, their quest ends in tragedy on thehighway, as drivers rarely slow down to wait atspider crossings. Plucked from the road andbrought north by a human who meant to savehim this fate, this hapless fellow was for salewhen my friends spotted it. Knowing I’m asucker for rescue tarantulas, they bought it tolive out its days – around two to three months –as the best Do Not Disturb sign my office hasever had.
While tarantulas are commonly found insoutheastern and southwestern Colorado, theya re n ’t normally encountered farther north. Thelarger arachnids scaring people along the FrontRange are those with names such as wolfs, catsand orb weavers.
The largest we’re likely to find are burrowingwolf spiders, (Geolycosa spp.), which are in-clined to stroll about, entering homes as theyhunt for food. But though they’re big, hairy andhave huge eyes, they aren’t after your children,so there’s no need to pummel them with abroom. Try collecting them in a large cup orTupperware container and taking them back
outdoors. If spiders dangling from webs give you the
shivers, you might want to avoid the bandedgarden spider (Argiope trifasciata). Easily thelargest orb weaver Colorado has, this silver-with-black-and-yellow stripes spider is a crafts-man at spinning perfect webs.
Though harmless, the banded garden spiderwarns people when they’re too close by grasp-ing the web and jumping up and down, lookinglike it’s getting the momentum up for a leap atyour jugular. Don’t worry, they won’t go air-borne, but you should back slowly away.
More commonly found is a web spinner of adifferent sort in garages, sheds and barns. Inthese shelters the catface, or monkyface, spider(Araneus gemmoides) likes to live. The smallhead accents the huge, bulbous abdomen, which on females can swell to an impressivequarter-inch diameter. The pair of roundedbumps on their back is what gives the spiderthe look of a cat’s face. These, too, are harmless, even though their legs sport wicked spines.
Because many spiders in homes are seasonal
invaders, removing debris in and around thehome is important for control. Clean up anywoodpiles, rocks and compost piles near thehouse. Garages, cellars and crawl spaces mustbe kept uncluttered, which may encouragesome of us to accept spiders in the house ratherthan constantly cleaning.
Check weather-stripping and seal crevices onthe home. Spiders that enter from outdoors doso through small breaks around windows anddoors. Screens, tight-fitting doors and windowswill help keep them out.
Inside, move boxes in closets around fre-quently and vacuum under furniture to disruptwebs. Spiders dislike having areas disturbedand will often leave if webs are frequently bro-ken. Fearful people can keep spiders at arm’slength by using a vacuum to destroy webs andpull spiders to their doom.

Warm woodfinishes createhigh-endkitchen look
Organize the garage for effective storage
Keep your message center“The trend in the past several years has been to get awayfrom having a message center in the kitchen, but I thinkthat’s a mistake,” says Chicago designer Jessica Kalina, ofKalina Kitchen & Bath. “Most people have always used thekitchen as a place to hang the car keys or for the kids tostore their homework or even to check recipes on thelaptop. If that describes your household, you shouldn’ttake that component of the design away and expectpeople to be able to change their ways.”
– HGTV
Garages have become the dumping ground for ourhomes. Many are so stuffed with clutter that there isno longer room even to park the car. By designing azone system we can free up enough room in ourgarage for everything that needs to be there.
Following a common-sense approach to garage orga-nization, professional organizer Marlene Hansen says“activity zones should be placed as close as possible towhere the items will be used.” In the case of gardentools, the ideal placement is near a side door leading tothe yard. If the garage has no side door, then the nextbest location is a spot close to the opening.
Regardless of your green thumb, Hansen urges thatall fertilizers, herbicides and other hazardous materialsbe stowed in a locked cabinet or, at the least, out ofreach of little ones. And if you prefer the grass seed to
end up on the lawn rather than in a chipmunk’scheeks, it should be stored in a metal container.
Another area in the garage that could use some or-ganizing is the space in front of vehicles. “Many peoplepull their cars into the garage much farther than theyneed to,” says Monica Friel, a professional organizer inChicago.
The freed-up space at the front of the garage is idealfor a vertical storage system, on which you can assem-ble all the automotive supplies, tools and car-careitems like buckets, sponges, soap and wax. For peopleon a budget, Friel suggests affordable particleboardshelving and common peg board-and-hook systems.Hobbyists and tinkerers should consider buying (orbuilding) a sturdy workbench.

If you’re dreaming about up-grading your kitchen, you haveplenty of company. As peoplespend more time at home, they’re feeling a pent-up desireto change things up, especiallyin the kitchen.
Only two in 10 consumers saythey’re completely happy withtheir kitchens and 42 percentsay they’d like to change a fewthings, according to the Re-search Institute for Cooking andKitchen Intelligence.
With trends leaning towardwarm colors inside the home, many homeowners long for thelook of cherry and other richwoods in everything from furni-ture to cabinetry, but are ham-pered by the high price point ofsuch products. The good news isthis high-end look can beachieved easily and economical-ly while creating a custom ap-pearance and gaining designflexibility in the process.
Hardwood Finishes forFirm Budgets
If you’re only changing thecabinetry in your home, choosewoods, colors and finishes that
will work with other changesyou may wish to make later. Forexample, one versatile type ofwood that offers the rich look ofcherry without the high cost isAlder, combined with a deep, rich finish. This wood type isfound in relatively few kitchens,so it offers an exclusive lookwith added design flexibility.
Diamond Cabinets’ expandedfinishes line, which includes de-licious new colors such aschocolate, cider, cranberry andharvest wheat, is available onthe company’s new Alder woodcabinets, as well as on its classicRustic Alder cabinets. Anotheridea is to choose a cabinet finishthat crosses over into a variety ofwood types. A chocolate finish, for instance can be used on ei-ther Alder cabinets or on ever-popular Maple cabinets. All ofthe finishes are designed toblend easily with a variety ofhome interiors, including thosewith classic, contemporary,
coastal or cottage-style designthemes. Even if you modify yourhome’s design throughout time,your cabinetry can transitionb e a u t i f u l l y.
Greater Design FlexibilityAs you look for greater design
flexibility on the exterior of yourcabinets, think about the interi-or of your cabinets, as well. Ifyou’re only installing a few newthings, with a little extra plan-ning you can squeeze every inchout of your existing kitchenfootprint by making the mostout of every cabinet.
Some cabinets are designedwith fashionable exteriors thatcan be modified with an extrainterior drawer of space in anarea that usually goes to wastebeneath the cabinet. An inge-nious cabinet design called aToekick Drawer can be added toa kitchen base cabinet, bringingvaluable extra space to stashhard-to-organize items such ascookie sheets or baking pans.

Tax credit will end soonBy Chris Kissell
b a n k r at e . c o m
First-time home buyersacross the nation are scram-bling to close on their pur-chases before the scheduledNov. 30 expiration of thegovernment’s $8,000 hous-ing tax credit.
“In literally the last 30days in my area, there is amassive sense of urgency forfirst-time home buyers,” saysChris Sipe, senior mortgageconsultant at Mason DixonFunding in Frederick, Md.“We ’re experiencingreally high volume.”
Proponents of thecredit say it has sig-nificantly boostedhome sales activity. To date, 1.4 millionnew home buyershave claimed the taxcredit, according tothe Internal RevenueSer vice.
Right now, thereare at least six pro-posals in Congressto extend, and possi-bly expand, the cred-it. While a creditcontinuation seems increas-ingly likely, it’s not a surething at a time of heightenedconcern about ballooningdeficits. And how would adecision to let the credit ex-pire in November affect thehousing market?
David Kuiper, a mortgageplanner at First Place Bank inHolland, Mich., worries thatif the credit is allowed to ex-pire, “we will see the doorslam shut” on buying activi-ty. The end of the tax creditwould eliminate a major cat-alyst for many first-timeshoppers to enter the market,he says. That in turn woulddampen move-up buyer ac-tivity, he adds.
“Not having the tax creditas an added incentive willcause a lot of first-time buy-ers to not take action andwill be very detrimental tothe housing recovery,”Kuiper says.
Sipe agrees the end of thecredit would cause sales todip, at least in the short term.
“There is a motivation forfirst-time home buyers to act,and we are seeing that activi-ty big time,” he says. “If thatmotivation goes away in re-gard to the tax credit, yeah,it’s going to have an impact. And I could see it beingsomewhat significant.”
Any slowdown associatedwith a decision to let thecredit expire likely would befelt quickly, as buyers realizethey’ve run out of time tofind, bid on and close on anew home before the creditelapses, Sipe says.
But not everyone agreesthat a disappearing tax creditwould result in vanishingsales.
Dan Green, a loan officerwith Waterstone Mortgage inCincinnati, believes the cred-it has boosted the housingmarket, and by extension theoverall economy.
However, an expiring taxc re d i t ’s impact on housingsales “won’t be as dire as in-dustry lobbyists would haveyou believe,” he says.
“People aren’t buying be-cause of the credit,” G re e nsays. “It’s a nice bonus, butthey are not buying just be-cause the credit exists.”
Rather, increased afford-ability and low mortgagerates are driving people backinto the market.
In fact, extending the cred-it into 2010 could do moreharm than good, Green says.He contends a deadline was amajor factor in the success ofthe Cash for Clunkers.
“There is a motivation forfirst-time home buyers to act,and we are seeing that activitybig time. If that motivation goesaway in regard to the tax credit, yeah, it’s going to have animpact. And I could see it beingsomewhat significant.”

Perhaps the biggest theme in homedecorating going into fall is comfort-able, real, personalized style.
“The perfect-home look is over,” saysDeborah Needleman, former editor-in-chief of Domino magazine. “It is so notof this moment. We’re living in a freertime in terms of design and style. Youcan simultaneously love modern de-sign, rustic pottery, some piece youpicked up on the side of the street – allthese things can live happily together inyour home.”
Where fashion goes, home decor isnever far behind. And this fall, homeretailers continue to take cues fromdecades past, such as ’60s and ’70sstyles ranging from loose and relaxed tosophisticated and worldly.
Watch for country-style furniture;cottage print textiles; farm animal mo-tifs; quilts as wall hangings and throws;folk art and faux general-store signageas wall art; flour-sack pillow covers;baskets and hooked rugs.
This isn’t throwback decor, witharmies of ducks marching across thekitchen wallpaper or plaid ribbons fes-tooning every chair; the vibe is com-fortable, yet contemporary. The floralprints are updated, and graphic printsare bold.
Wisteria has some striking gameboards, unique replicas of old weathervanes and a variety of colorful quilts.Pottery Barn also stocks a quilt collec-
tion, as well as crewelwork pillows, gal-vanized steel serveware and cool reprosignage.
Americana is big. You’ll see the flagand other patriotic symbols rendered infaux-vintage painted wood, distressedcotton and painted tin. The colors ofthe warmer months take on a deepertone, so the lilac becomes plum, andthe sunny yellow is now ochre. Burntorange and deep crimson remain im-portant hues.
If there’s such a thing as AmericanBoho, then its sister must be Global Bo-ho: Russian folk prints, needlepointedrugs, Moorish motifs, hammered silverThai vases, handcrafted pottery and ex-otic Asian furniture.
Homegoods has been touring theEast Coast this summer with a mobilehome full of style ideas. They recentlyset it up in Manhattan; Needleman wason hand, admiring colorfulsilk pillows, faux croc trays, and other eclectic, luxuriousyet affordable furnishings. She’s teamed up with the re-tailer on a fun “Stylescope” –an online quiz that helps youdefine your own style. Hers, she says, is Bohemian Clas-sic.
“A Bohemian look is a re-flection of its owner’s par-ticular tastes and inter-ests, and also I think, anappreciation of the bestof what other cultures
have to offer,” she says.Textures are prominent this fall: faux
reptile, suede and hammered tin. Crate& Barrel has several embroidered floralrugs and pillows worth considering, aswell as slubby cotton curtains reminis-cent of barkcloth. The ’70s were alsomade for all things Mexican; now wesee beautiful Mexican-style ceramicsshowing up in stools and decorativeitems. In fact, ceramics of every sort areimportant; you’ll notice a lot of interest-ing craft in lampshades, vases and trays.
In the ’60s we were hipsters, in the’70s we were disco fans. We’ll see someof the groove and the glamour of theseeras now and through the holidays, with metallics, glass and fur playing arole. Black and white furnishings staystrong, with shots of purple, sapphire, lime and chrome yellow. Look for clearLucite tables, shag rugs, patent leatherand steel furniture, and a lot of white.

Add a new bath in your small homeArticle Resource Association
Smaller homes are making a comeback. Morefamilies are hanging onto their existing homes andimproving these smaller proper-ties, instead of trading up.
Maximizing livable space is howthe American Institute of Archi-tects describes this new trend, aby-product of a down new-housingand real estate market. Smaller re-model projects – finishing atticsand basements – readily achievethat goal, making the home moreenjoyable today while increasingits resale value tomorrow.
Nearly 130 million homes arecurrently in need of work, includ-ing adjustments to meet “changingpreferences and lifestyles,” such asfamily members returning home tolive, according to the Joint Center for HousingStudies at Harvard University.
As the owner of a smaller home, you shouldknow that adding even a small bathroom is amongthe best investments you can make, typically re-turning 65 percent or more of the cost on resale. Inthe attic or the basement, you can save money on abath addition by using macerating plumbing, which requires no digging for under-floor drainagepiping.
For this same reason, you can also convert an
existing room or even a closet into a new smallbathroom to better accommodate guests or evenfamily members moving into your home. No dig-ging for drainage means a quicker, less messy and
cheaper installation experience.
Install an up ToiletKnown as an up toilet or above-
floor plumbing, macerating tech-nology is the way to go, says EastTaunton, Mass., plumber MikeSikorski, who installs Saniflobrand products. Plumbing wasteand water are pumped throughsmall-diameter piping, which canbe located inside the wall, right in-to the sewer or septic tank. Sikors-ki estimates that this type of sys-tem saves his customers $1,000 onaverage, “and that’s on the low
side,” he says.
Saving Money is KeyCost-saving projects like these are among the
ways homeowners will most likely focus their fu-ture remodeling dollars, according to the 2009 Re-modeling Market in Transition report prepared bythe Joint Center.
If you’re staying put in your smaller home, butwant to improve its livability and long-term value, consider adding a bathroom with maceratingplumbing.

Paying the mortgagein a down economy
Each week, I receive dozens of let-ters from readers. The vast majorityof them are in trouble financially, mostly because they’ve lost their joband can’t pay their bills.
I get the sense from reading thesee-mails that each of these homeown-ers wishes desperately he or shecould rely on a paycheck each week. The anguish comesthrough as they describetheir dearest wish: to getcaught up with theirmortgage payments andcontinue living theirlives.
As we pick through therubble of this recession,it’s easy to stumble on theidea that it’s over anddone with. The big bankson Wall Street are report-ing record profits and setting asideastounding numbers to pay bonusesthat are three times as big as the me-dian home price.
The stock market reached 10,000in mid-October, up more than 50percent from the low in early March. It’s less frightening to see stock mar-ket down 25 percent from its all-timehigh than down 47 percent.
But then there are the persistentmonthly job losses that make mewonder how those who are unem-ployed or underemployed and arebehind in their mortgages will makeup the difference.
Although net job losses wereslightly down (in a recent week),more than 200,000 jobs are still be-ing lost in this country every month. It’s a crazy number, and it is pro-foundly affecting the real estate mar-ket.
It’s easy to see why RealtyTrac’sRick Sharga says the record numberof foreclosure filings in the thirdquarter of 2009 is employment-driv-en. If you don’t have a job, you’ll useevery scrap of money you have tostay current on your bills while youdesperately hunt for employment.Yo u ’ll use your unemployment bene-fits to pay for your mortgage, andwhen it’s a choice between food and
mortgage, you’ll go delinquent. Ifyou’re delinquent long enough, thelender will start foreclosure proceed-ings.
The national unemployment rateis expected to rise above 10 percentand then stay above 9 percent for awhile. But in plenty of cities andstates, the official unemployment
rate passed 10 percent along time ago. The unoffi-cial rate of unemploymentis far higher.
When it comes to fore-closure, the problem isn’tjust the 7.2 million jobsthat have been lost duringthis great recession. Thereare millions of Americanswho took a huge pay cutto keep their companiesgoing. Unpaid furloughs
and 10 to 25 percent pay cuts meantens of millions of Americans arehaving a much harder time payingtheir bills – and their mortgages areat risk, as well.
It’s unlikely their employers willautomatically bump their salariesback to where they were before thecollapse of the economy. So, they’llhave less to spend going forward.
On the expense side, this week’snews is about how consumer pricesrose more than expected last month, and about how milk prices are aboutto soar. We’re paying $75 for a barrelof oil versus $150 per barrel lastsummer, but I just paid over $3 pergallon for gasoline on a recent trip toCalifornia.
Yo u ’d think a few pennies here orthere wouldn’t matter much – butthey do to most Americans.
The hangover from this recessionisn’t going away any time soon.
