president's podiumOn a recent trip to the South Island I observed severalgroups of motorcyclists riding to and from what I believeto be an event called the Dusty Butt. Some of these ridersmust have had experienced some form a brain fade fromtime to time as I watched them passing on both doubleand single no pass lines at excessive speeds. This kind ofriding places not only themselves in considerable dangerbut also the group they are riding with and everybody elsewho happens to be travelling on that section of road. I waspleased Beemers or any BMWOR fluoro vests were notamongst these offending riders. It is important that whenwe are out on the road with our BMWOR vests on toremember that we are riding as Ambassadors for theRegister.

Also while travelling in the South Island I had a chance tocatch up with Andrea. Andrea and Allan are two of our

members that advertise in our Newsletter (City Motorcycle Rentals and HeidenauAdventure Motorcycle Tyres), and they have a large selection of tyres and a stable fullof hire bikes made up of many marques. If you have friends visiting New Zealand andlooking to see the best of our country while riding a motorcycle why not put them intouch with Allan or Andrea? They can be contacted on 03 3149947 027 4876570 oremail [email protected]

Area Reps. We have a changing of the guard with some of our Area Reps. The role ofan Area Rep is essential to the way in which we offer our services to members of thisClub. If you are in an area where your Rep is taking time out from their role as Area Repwhy not give it a go yourself. You could start off by talking to your Area Rep or me. Wealso have available on our website a very good guide to becoming an Area Rep.

Taranaki: Our Area Rep has had a close encounter with his tractor and a big Mac truckwith Colin in the middle of it. I am please to be able to report that Colin is on the mend.It may take a little time for Colin to get back to full fitness. We all wish Colin a speedyrecovery from his injuries and to see him back on the bike. Colin has decided to letsomeone else step up and carry the baton for the Taranaki area. Are you up for it?

Bay of Plenty: Peter Lyner has decided to take a break. Peter has served the Club formany years as Area Rep and as Editor for our Newsletter. He has put in many hours forthe benefit of our Club. Peter feels it is time for a fresh face and fresh ideas to front theBay of Plenty area. I thank Peter and Catherine on behalf of all members for theiroutstanding contributions to the Club.

Service Providers: We have a serious shortage of service providers more so in theSouth Island. If our importers of new bikes and spare parts want to continue importingbikes and parts into New Zealand then they surely have an obligation to assist our localservice providers wherever possible. We intend to work on this problem in order toachieve reasonable service facilities for our members.

An Executive meeting hasbeen scheduled for the15th March, it is going tobe a close run timetablein order to table theminutes in the AprilNewsletter due to timerestraints place upon ourEditor, Secretary andpublishers. You may haveto wait until the May issueto read them.

As always – wheels downfeet up.

Peter.

area reportsrangitikeiThe weekender that was scheduledoriginally for Awakino, and then morphedinto Opunake Beach Camp was exciting. The ride to Dawson Falls was great, withgreat vistas and no wind. The ElthamRoad had the Ride Leader and Tail EndCharlie huddled very close together asthe cross wind became stronger. Then awasp got stuck in my trousers and gotbusy with revenge for interrupting itsflight plan. The Opunake Beach issheltered but as we got our cabin sortedit rained. And blew.

Dinner (a short walk to Sugar Juice Cafe)was fantastic.

The next day we had a wee look aroundthe Opunake township and lake, thenheaded for Hawera. Winds the day beforewas only mild by comparison. And thenthere was horizontal rain to contend with. The coffee at the Fat Cow Cafe was moreneeded than wanted.

After that we simply rode home through achallenging breeze. Why did the TEChuddle so close to the RL? We were theonly ones who ventured out on thisweekender. Yep, just Heather and me!!!!

We held our second ride 'n' dine at theHungry Fox in Foxton (of course!). A bigmuster of 15 and a great sight in theparking area with three rows of mostlyBMW bikes all pointing east. The foodfare is Chinese. The Chinese steak mealis highly commended.

Our Rob G was one of the riders whoassisted Mike Hyde test his ride routesaround NZ. This is the stuff of TwistingThrottle NZ. Rob chose the Route 52chapter. An early start from Wanganuiwas rewarded with the best weatherimaginable. After an exemplary riderbriefing, all ten riders, and the twopillions, enjoyed cruising betweenWaipukurau and Pongaroa. For some, itwas then on to Masterton, shaking thedust out of the feathers on their Chicken

Introduction:

The BMW Owners Register is an organisation whose members join together for rides tonominated venues and for other social occasions. The organiser nominates thedestination and regrouping stages along the way, but otherwise has no influence uponthe way that riders behave on the road. There is no element of organised competition inthe rides.

Riding Code:

1. All register members on register rides shall do so as individuals responsible for theirown safety and shall take into account the safety of others they encounter on the ride.

2. Register members are responsible for ensuring that their motorcycles are in a safe andlegal condition, the minimum being to Warrant of Fitness standards.

3. Riders, pillions, and sidecar passengers where required, shall have as a minimumStandards New Zealand approved motorcycle helmets, and stout footwear, gloves andclothing that will be capable of protecting their body in the event of a mishap.

4. Register members are to go to the aid of any others suffering a mishap.

5. Ride organisers shall nominate the destination for the ride as well as any regroupinglocations or other stops. The organiser is not responsible for other riders’ behaviour orsafety.

6. Riders shall ride at a speed and in a way that is comfortable for them. Do not rideoutside your personal comfort envelope.

7. If a rider is unfamiliar with the route, they shall arrange to follow another rider who doesknow the way and who travels at a comfortable pace.

8. Riders who decide to travel as a group shall adopt a staggered riding formation suchthat there is an accepted following distance to the rider immediately in front. A reasonablefollowing distance is indicated by a time of two seconds between riders for dryconditions, and longer for inclement conditions and on loose surfaces.

9. The Organiser and or the Register are not responsible for participants’ safety, and allparticipants participate at their own risk. All participants are aware that they are travellingon open public roads and are responsible for their own safety and compliance with allRoad Rules and Laws.

east coastThe meeting point for our March ride wasMcDonalds in Havelock North. TheBMWs gathered together and werejoined by a red Triumph Triple, whichparked in close. We all thought “howstrange” until the rider and pillionclimbed off and removed their helmets. Itwas Warren and Robin. From a pillionpoint of view, the Triumph didn’t look ascomfortable as my armchair ride, but thefellows were all very interested andappreciative.

We rode down Middle Road, which wehad pretty much to ourselves, until wearrived at the Patangata Tavern at thesame time as Dan and Rosemary. Thenwe were six bikes and 11 people. Weheaded out to Kairakau Beach andparked up to take in the magnificent viewand balmy sea air. Some thought weshould have brought our togs, the waterlooked so inviting. While the men talkedbikes, the ladies were taken across theroad to the Mosaic Lady’s home, wherewe had a fascinating time looking at herartwork in the garden and in progress inher studio. We also heard some of thehistory of the settlement.

We then headed back to Elsthorpe andonto Waimarama via Kahuranaki andWaimarama Roads. Dave and Margaretmet us at JARKs Café, making six BMWsand one Triumph, with not a car amongstus. We had an enjoyable lunch, planningfuture rides, and then made our own wayhome.

(Sorry, East Coast, last minutesubmissions knocked out space for yourphotos, which have migrated to Page 16.)

nelsonAt the usual meeting place, QueenElizabeth Drive lay-by nine of us met up,

three with pillions. It was my first ride withthe group on my newly acquired F800 GSwith the Mission Controller 2014. Andyes, it has taken some time to adjust tothe newer model, which is a bit quicker torespond to acceleration but not as quickin the engine breaking as the R1100.(Read head butting!) A great littlemachine all the same.

We had a small coffee break at theForester’s Café, which is just on theMarlborough side of the Whangamoa.Peter Unger our honorary Nelsonmember from the Marlborough Soundsdecided to meet us at the cafe as he onlylives about 15 minutes ride from Picton. After our coffee break we headed off toPicton via the Grove Track and QueenCharlotte Drive.

I am sure there would be many memberswho have travelled from Picton to Nelsonon this road who will admit this is a gemof a road for motorcycle riding. Lovely seaviews, some flat parts, winding andnarrow road and an occasional land slipto add to the surprise.

We had a perfect ride to Picton and theweather in Picton was as expected at thistime of the year, warm, sunny and nowind. We made our headquarters on thegrassed area in front of the main streetfrom where you can see the ferriesarriving and leaving plus all themovement of other boats.

The homeward journey was a differentstory; we decided to take the Tuamarina-Kaituna track as a short cut. Both Sueand I were convinced that it was a sealedroad all the way, because we have beenthrough this road several times when welived in Blenheim a few years ago. Forthose of you interested in taking this roadas a short cut to Nelson from Picton, turnright just as you turn the bend atTuamarina. It is a lovely ride, flat, with afew turns as one would expect and verylittle traffic as the road follows the river. Itcomes out North of the Wairau Bridge atKaituna.

Anyway back to the story, after about 8km from the turnoff from SH1 the roadchanged to gravel. I thought there mightbe road works for a few hundred metres, but no, it was indeed a proper gravel roadfor about 4/5 kms. As you would expectwhen surprises like this are thrown atpeople we all react differently. A coupleof riders decided to turn back and carryon the normal route, mainly because of abelt driven bike or shortage of petrol orinexperienced at gravel riding. One riderwho shall remain nameless left his pillion(and wife) behind so he could turn backand help the riders turn around. As statedabove it was a hot day, so she decided totake shelter in the shade of some bigtrees. The nameless person did his gooddeed for the day and rode straight pastwhere he had left his Mrs. He joined usby the road where we were waiting for therest of the riders and looks behind himand says, “I seem to have lost my pillion

somewhere, I’d better go and look forher”. He headed east again and about 5minutes later came back with her, bothlooking relieved and a bit sheepish.

The belt driven bike caught up not farfrom the Wairau Bridge having travelledthe normal route rather speedily. The restof the journey was eventless. Westopped at the café at Pelorous Bridgeand enjoyed a long awaited ice cream aswe pondered the adventures of the dustmunchers who had ridden on up theNorth Bank after the Kaituna track.

otago southlandTuesday evening cruise out to TaiaroaHead on the 18th of February wasrewarded by displays of albatrosscircling, and a gentle ride down the(much improved in places) peninsularoad in the sunshine.

Sunday 23rd February looked like abeautiful sunny day for the Ride to Clyde. The wind turned out to be both gusty andchilly, but a brave few battled it to gatherin Palmerston then build into a slightlybigger group in Oterehua for morning teaand a knees out (on the upwind side; Ifind it helps though I don't know quitewhy) ride up the wild Ida valley and overthe hill to Clyde. We'll even lay claim tothe chaps who joined our lunch tablehaving followed trails from the other sideof the hills; one on a G450X and allpeople we knew. No photos I'm afraid,The Bank's bacon buttie was just that bittoo distracting. Then we went ourseparate ways (I have the sense not to,and lack the ability to, pursue seriousenduro weapons on my GS). A minordownpour on the group returning toDunedin provided the excuse for anafternoon tea stop in Lawrence; that maymake it sound like a lot of time in eateriesbut there were still more than 400kmunder the tyres by the time the bike wasback in the garage.

Friday 3 January:

18 hour trip to Buenos Aires (3 hours, 25minutes layover in Santiago) for me,Justin, Alex and Ian. The rest of the partyare already in South America. LeftAuckland at 4:15 pm and arrived BuenosAires 5:00 pm. Weird!

Our leader for the tour, Magnus, met us atthe airport before we taxied to the HotelLa Perla in the middle of town to meet upwith Dave, Rod and Maryann, Clarry,Rene and David and Vicki. City remindedme a bit of Abu Dhabi, very crowded but areal sense of excitement! Hot too, it’s noteven lunchtime and is 38 degrees! LikingArgentina already, beer comes by thelitre! We head out by bus to Rosariotomorrow so no worries about drinkdriving. Think I’ll have another beer.

Saturday 4:

Our bus picked us up early for the 4 hourride to Rosario. Interesting landscapesimilar to Canterbury really, long straightroads and flat as far as you can see. Wechecked into to La Casa de Arriba, a nicebackpacker style place close to thecentre of town. Our host, Nachos (like thefood) and his partner looked after us well.Made sure the fridge was well stockedwith cold beer for later!

We wandered down town to spend acouple of hours at Dakar Parc Ferme fordrinks/photos and the podium start.Thousands of people were out watchingthe parade of race vehicles before thestart tomorrow. Wicked atmosphere! Gotpaperwork to do for the bikes tonight, wehave a 5:30 alarm for a 6:00 starttomorrow, and we’re told we’ve gotaround 700km to get in front of theracing. It's hot but not unpleasant and thecafés abundant.

Rosario is a much tidier city than BA. Ourblack polo shirts with the silver fern andDakar logos are already drawing quite abit of attention!

Sunday 5:

After collecting the bikes (for me anF650GS twin), we left Rosario at 7:00 amfollowing the competitor’s transit route. We ended up between the cars andtrucks (the bikes left at 3:00 am as theyhave an 809 kilometre stage today) butthe way the locals treated us you'd thinkwe were competing. I've never had myphoto taken so often and people wantingautographs or photos of their kids withthe bike swamped us at every stop. Quitesomething!

We rode 658 kilometres to the bivouac atPotrero de los Funes race track in SanLuis. No issues at all riding on the right, infact it seemed quite natural. Magnusmust have said we were All Blacks orsomething as important as the cops on

duty waved us through. We got to ridepart of the track, again with thousands ofpeople waving and cheering us on, allquite surreal. We met some of the properriders, they were happy to chat and quitechuffed we’d come such a long way tofollow them around. The people here justlove kiwis!

Bonus, the Hotel Aiello has a pool! Shirts, shorts and socks get a wash.

Tomorrow we head into the foothills ofthe Andes to a couple of designatedspectator areas before heading toMendoza. Our strategy is to jump aheadof the Rally on alternate days so we haveevery other day to watch as much of theracing as we can.

Monday 6:

Early morning start, headed out to one ofthe designated spectator zones to catchthe start of stage 2. The bikes haveanother big day today with a 365kilometre transit and a 359 kilometrespecial stage between San Luis and SanRafael.

After a couple of hours watching weheaded to Mendoza, further north of San

Rafael and only a short run (300kilometres) from San Luis where westayed last night. We have most of theafternoon to ourselves and few havegone wine tasting at a vineyard about 10minutes away but it's too hot! I reallyneed to get a proper sleep after the lastfew restless nights.

We have about 4 hours of riding and 5hours of watching the bikes and cars ontheir special stages tomorrow beforestopping the night in San Juan.

Tuesday 7:

Only 438 kilometres today but it tookbest part of 10 hours to get to San Juan. The bikes left again at 3:30 am, whichwas a tad early for us. They have another600+ kilometre day in front of them. Westopped for a couple of hours to watchthe cars and trucks starting the marathonstage outside Mendoza, man those Minisare quick! Alex and I found a choicevantage point on a hill just north of thefirst corner. Plenty of action!

We managed to get a bit of gravel in onour ride today, some of it very deep. I donot like the F650GS much but shouldn’tcomplain; the HP2 spoils me. Drinkinghuge amounts of water, at least 5L a day- and none of it comes out. It's really hot!

It is cooling down a bit as we climbthough. San Juan is okay, it is very muchlike home around here as far as thelandscape goes but there’s much abjectpoverty, people seem very happy though.I finally got to go to San José. Great dayout, best so far!

Wednesday 8:

Nice start from San Juan this morning,24 degrees is much more pleasant toride in, but it didn't take long before it hit39 degrees. We watched the start of thestage to Chilecito before heading a bitfurther east to our overnight stop in LaRioja. The 456 kilometres to get therewas a mission in the heat! We stopped afew times to refresh (basically buckets ofcold water on the head), and got mobbedby local kids (and parents) whenever westopped for gas, especially with all thesupport vehicles stopping as well. Justinand Ian took a couple of local girls for aspin on the bikes, didn’t think they werecoming back.

We're now in front of the bikes so shouldget some spectacular views in tomorrow. All is going okay, it's a good group for themost part, and Magnus is looking after uswell with no real dramas yet. Minor issueswith one or two of the bikes but Thomas, our guide, proved to be a pretty goodmechanic. He is teaching me usefulSpanish too! Hotel Avenida is one of thenicer places we’ve stayed at, great aircon!

Thursday 9:

competitors have the biggest day with a384 kilometre transit and a 527 kilometrespecial stage (911 kilometres total) to getto San Miguel de Tucuman. We also havea big day to get ahead of the rally again,636 kilometres to Cafayate about halfway between Tucuman and the nextstage stop, and rest day, in Salta.

What a fantastic ride! First up, a road likethat over the Rimutaka Hill except around90 kilometres more and a surface morelike you’d find at Manfield. Some seriousfoot peg scraping going on! Then ontoTafi de Valle over Ruta 307, with stunningviews of the lake from the summit beforewinding down to Amaicha del Valle andlunch at a small café next to the MuseoPachamama, a simply stunning spot.

From there it was onto the famous Ruta40 for the last leg to Cafayate and HotelLos Sauces. Ruta 40 is the longest routein Argentina and one of the largest in theworld at more than 5,000 km long. Itstarts at sea level at its southern end nearthe city of Río Gallegos, crosses 20national parks, 18 major rivers, 27 passeson the Andes, and goes up to 5,000 mabove sea level in Salta. A lot of it isgravel, and we just love it!

We enjoyed a brilliant dinner in the plazawith plenty of cerveza. Best day yet!

Friday 10:

Well, best laid plans and all that. We’dhoped for a great spectating day and alazy ride to Salta later in the afternoon. As

it happened, we stopped on the way outof Cafayate to fill up only to find the gas

station closed, the Dakar boys hadcleaned out the petrol and a refill wasn’tdue until later in the afternoon.

Magnus sent Thomas ahead in theRanger to find gas while we headed backinto Cafayate to wait. We found a spot onthe square at the edge of town andsettled in to watch the cars and trucksleaving. A great little sandwicheríaprovided freshly made empanadas tokeep us going.

Thomas didn’t get back until just after

12:00 pm and was only able to provide acouple of litres each to get us underway. It was only 189 to Salta, but one or twodidn’t make it on the petrol they had. Noworries on the twin though, got to thegas station about 140 kilometres awaywith a slight cough entering theforecourt.

We got to Salta later than expected, checked into the Ibis hotel and headedout for dinner, all of us really lookingforward to the rest day following.

Saturday 11:

Well, so much for a rest day. Alex left hiswallet back in Cafayate. Thomas offeredto go back in the Ranger but Alex wantedto ride back to get it. Magnus did notwant him riding alone and insisted thatwhoever went with him had a GPS. I putmy hand up since Alex is a mate.

We left at 6:00 am and had a great rideback in 20 degrees, stopping at severaltourist sites along the way for photos.

Encountered a bit of light rain inCafayate, the first of the trip, but it wasstill really warm. We duly collected thewallet, grabbed some breakfast in theplaza and started the return run to Saltaabout 10:30 am. On the way back thetemperature dropped to 16 degrees andintermittent showers dampening downthe red clay made the canyon road quiteslippery. We took it very easy. About 40km from Salta the heavens opened andwe got soaked. When it rains here it’s

9th - Lunch stop at Amaicha del Valle

Ian and Justin accommodate a couple of local girls.

11th - El Sapo (The Toad) on Route 68 fromCafayate to Salta. The wind is responsible forshaping many such oddities.

big!

My GPS battery gave up with about 10kilometres to go; fortunately Iremembered how we got to the hoteldespite the one way system. It's stillraining, just hope it clears up fortomorrow. We have a 600 km day with aborder crossing from Argentina to Chile;sadly we are not able to go into Bolivianow due to the change in bike route forthe Rally. Thomas reckons it will takearound 3 hours to get us all across theborder; it's going to be a long day! I'mskipping dinner and going to bed early, quite hard getting any sleep when it's 4to a room and 3 are snoring. For the nextthree nights we are back to 2 per room sothat will be better.

Salta is not the city I expected, more likea town that just has too many people andthe infrastructure is insufficient fortorrential rain. The streets are floodedand there’s raw sewerage in the mix, traffic is just chaos. It's an adventurethough and I was stoked to get through aday out without a guide or an interpreterand still manage.

Sunday 12:

We left Salta at 6:00 am in the rainheading north through Jujuy province toRuta 52 and the Chilean border at PasoJama. Nearly everyone is down with the'squirts', and a few of us were sick asdogs overnight. Common denominatorappears to have been poor quality water. Ifelt so bad I only managed coffee forbreakfast.

We made good time in the morningstopping for a cup of tea in the village ofPurmamarca, nestled under the Cerro delos Siete Colores (Hill of Seven Colours),a spectacular formation. The village isgorgeous, with ochre adobe houses andancient algarrobo trees by the bijou 17th-century church. This, and its proximity toJujuy, has made it perhaps thenorthwest’s most over-touristed spot butif you’re looking for an authentic Andeanvillage move on. Nevertheless,Purmamarca is an excellent place to shopfor woven goods; a flourishing ponchomarket sets up on the plaza every day.

Riding at 3,400m we came across thesalar of Salinas Grandes 40 kilometres upthe road. Despite its smaller size, only12,000 hectares, Salinas Grandesprobably gets more visitors than itscolossal brother across in border inBolivia as it straddles the highway linkingArgentina with Chile.

We found lunch and gas at Pasto Chicos,a small but flash restaurant in whatseemed like the middle of nowhere.Thomas got caught at a roadblock wherethe Rally was passing through. We gotdirected straight through on the bikes butthe Ranger was held up for well over anhour so we lost loads of time waiting forhim. We can’t cross the border withoutour luggage. Good for me though as Ineeded a sleep.

We got to the Chilean border around 3:00pm. It was total chaos with a couple ofofficials trying to process a couple ofhundred people. It took 4 hours to getthrough! It was beyond funny but youcan’t do much about it but settle in toplay the game. Met a nice woman in SAG(customs) who spoke better English thanmy Spanish and she helped us out, eventually clearing our path to the border.

Just after we got through, Justin rearended Clarry’s bike at some speed. Bothare fine apart from a bit of bruising butJustin’s bike and helmet were totallywritten off. By the time we got Clarry’sbike mobile and Justin’s on the back ofthe Ranger it was dark and that’s notmuch fun when crossing the Andes. Westill had a couple of hundred kilometresto go. Riding at altitude (4,500m) at nightwhen it is 2 degrees is very taxing; I wasabsolutely knackered and really shouldnot have been on a bike. We didn't get toour hotel in San Pedro de Atacama untilafter 11:00 pm. Of course there was nodinner, which was probably just as well. Iwent straight to bed. Not a great daytoday.

Monday 13:

I slept like a log and feel much bettertoday. We had a later start this morningleaving Atacama at 10:00 am for a short90 kilometre run to our hotel in Calama. The Atacama Desert is just beautiful andthe temperature is a much more pleasant20 degrees. The road running throughthe desert is awesome but you’ve got towatch the sand drifts on the corners. ThePark Hotel is 5 stars too! I might even getsome washing done. We have a couple ofhours to sort stuff out, change moneyetc. then we're off into the desert towatch the bikes come through. All isgood again!

Tuesday 14: Our overnight stay at thePark Hotel, Calama was great, had agood sleep and my laundry was sorted!

Yesterday’s spectating in the desert wasjust fabulous. Grabbed an early breakfastthis morning and got away on the bikesto the start of the 9th stage about 20kmout into the Atacama Desert where wespent the morning watching all theremaining vehicles in the Rally take off fortheir 469km special stage. It’s a shamenearly half the bikes are out already but agreat morning nonetheless.

The Rally heads north another 100kilometres or so to Iquique but we’reheading to Tocopilla, a wee town on theChilean coast about 160km west ofCalama. We'll pick the race up againtomorrow as they come back beforemotoring south to Antofagasta to get infront of them again. Our 160 kilometretrip today was basically a dead straightroad across the desert (boring) and about5 kilometres of very steep twistiesheading down into town (fantastic).

Tocopilla is a lovely place and looks to begrowing quite rapidly. I had fish for lunch(as opposed to steak), and it was reallygood. Great day, looking forward to a liein, we don't need to hurry tomorrow.

Wednesday 15:

We left Tocopilla around 10:00 am andenjoyed a 160 kilometre road trip downthe coast to the bivouac at Antofagasta. Itwas like riding the coastal route toKaikoura, just much grander and drier. We haven't seen a blade of grass for thelast four days!

We arrived a couple of hours before thefirst bikes were due to finish their specialstage from Iquique so had lunch at LaPortada about 18 kilometres north ofAntofagasta, the most amazing spotcantilevered over the ocean. Free beerscourtesy of the Cristal girls, bonus!

After lunch, and free iced coffee from theNestea sponsors, we headed up into thesand dunes for the afternoon to watchthe competitors arrive at the finish. Wefound by far the best spot, right on acorner where the racing transitioned from

a thin layer of metal, across a steep bermand onto the sand. Trucks on one wheel, bikes airborne and Minis full noise overthe lot, and so close we could havetouched them. Got some great photos, and a healthy dose of sun! Met a coupleof Dutch guys with a chillybin full of coldbeer in their truck, and only too happy toshare!

Antofagasta is huge, way bigger than Iexpected and quite a contrast betweenthe old and new parts of the city. There isobviously wealth here as there is a lot ofinvestment in new infrastructure, including grass median strips. The hotelis good; we’ve had a great dinner and afew beers in town.

It's just after midnight and still 20degrees. We have a 600km trip on thePan American to Copiapo tomorrow toget back in front of the Rally which isheading for El Salvador, a bit furthernorth, so I’ll need a good sleep. Justin isdoing fine; his bruise has turned anawesome colour. Awesome day today, the best yet!

Thursday 16:

Well, I thought the day from Antofagastato Copiapa was going to be pretty boring, but actually it wasn't bad. We left earlyafter a light breakfast and cracked thefirst 250kms in a pleasant 19 degreesthreading our way south along the coast. The towns along the way are of a similarformat; at the northern end is a beachwith many tents or shacks that peoplelive in amongst the rocks; then there is amine (or two); then the township itselfand at the southern end, some sort ofresort. The road itself (Ruta 1) is brilliant, way above NZTA standards, although thedriving here is pretty courageous!

We stopped in a couple of places forphotos, it's such a big place though and itmostly looks the same. Had lunch in alocal place, it was filled with construction

workers and truck drivers so we figuredthe food had to be good despite thedismal ambience. As it turned out, it wasbrilliant, a bowl of cazuela, the local stew, going down really well.

We got to Copiapo just on 4:00pm. It is37 degrees but a nice breeze blowing, okay if you find some shade. The HotelLa Casona is fantastic, little two bed villasscattered around a nice garden. We'vedone some washing, grabbed morebeers and will chill out a bit before wehead into town to find dinner. Tomorrowwe catch the race again before headinganother 390 kilometres south to LaSerena for the night.

Friday 17:

Easy day today, the plan was to head outto a spectator spot for a few hours beforemoseying on to our hotel in La Serena.

Actually, we almost didn't leave Copiapoat all, at least not on the bikes. We foundout this morning that our bikes are notinsured by the rental company so the$1500 excess we were told about is ajoke. We threatened to just park them up

and finish the tour on a bus. Magnussorted it eventually but it cost himUS$100 per person to cover us for thelast two days. Bit late for Justin though,we’ll have to sort that out.

We headed out into the desert to watchthe racing in some kickass sand dunesfor 4 hours before heading off to LaSerena. Amazing watching the bikescome down the dunes.

Out 'hotel' for the night is a villa in themiddle of nowhere, dirt tracks for access, but the most amazing place. We’re on foran authentic Chilean BBQ for dinner soThomas and I headed back into town inthe truck to pick up more beer. It’s a bitcrowded with 6 per cabin but one of thebest places we've stayed.

Saturday 18:

An early start saw us fire off 250kilometres to get to the viewing point thismorning. I was leading as Justin is nowon Magnus' bike and Magnus is in thetruck. We found a great spot on a riverbed near Combarbala used for thespecial stage, very close up and personalwith the racers. Brilliant! We had to leaveat 1:00 pm though to get the bikes toValparaiso on time. Good ride, little bit ofrain and an amazing lightning showheading away from the spectator zonebut it soon warmed up and we dried outquickly.

We checked into the Hotel Victoria at4:00 pm, handed the bikes back toThomas and shot down to the podiumfinish. It was just nuts. So many people!

It's just gone 1:30 am, and we've onlyjust finished dinner! We have a day off tolook around Valparaiso tomorrow, lookingforward to that.

Sunday 19:

Slack day today, enjoyed a late breakfastand a wander through the markets. There

are some lovely old buildings in this partof the city. Cops were not too happy withme taking photos of the presidentialpalace though.

We're back from dinner down by the port. Not too shabby but it’s a dodgy part of

15th - (LR) Magnus, Rod, Alex - happy men have cold beer!

Thursday, 16th January

Folker rides to Upper Hutt, leaving about10.30. A nice Hawke’s Bay day, but as Itravel south past Dannevirke, I start to gettossed about. I put on an extra layer andmotor on to Woodville for a lunch stop.By this time the wind is making the ridequite uncomfortable and I ring Al to see ifI shouldn’t ride via the Kapiti Coast. Heassures me Upper Hutt is becalmed and Iride on. Filling my tank in Masterton, Iswelter and am assured that Al was right. He wasn’t. I had the scariest ride everover the Rimutaka Hill, allowing anynumber of cars to pass me and beingtossed to the incorrect side of the road inthe bargain, alas in a place where I couldsee the north- going lane. It wasn’t yourfault, Al. I arrive in a becalmed UpperHutt .

town, we’ve been advised to movearound in groups of three at least if we’rewalking anywhere. People here are eithervery wealthy or not, there is nothing inbetween, and no welfare so the crimerate is pretty high, a lot going unreportedI suspect.

Have a room to myself tonight as Alexhas left for Machu Picchu. It’s the onlyone in the hotel with a balcony. Luxury! Our bus leaves for Santiago at 10:00 amso a bit of a lie in before breakfast.

Monday 20:

Liking Santiago. Bus trip was largelyuneventful. David and Vicki stayed inValparaiso. As we head south it gettinggreener. Could be any part of New

Zealand, but huge vineyards and olivegroves dominate. We've got a great hotelin the government district so it’s very tidyalthough they have yet to solve the graffitiproblem. Great architecture andinteresting historic sites scatteredaround the plaza. First place on the wholetrip we could get decent coffee so twoespressos and a huge wedge ofblueberry cheesecake went down well forlunch.

Browsed a few of the markets, quite coolhaving these in front of all the bigdepartment stores on the main drag.Seem to attract more punters.

Magnus has scoped out a nice spot forthe eight of us left on the tour to havedinner tonight, right on the plaza. Going

to miss eating at 10:00 or 11:00 pm,especially when it’s a cool 26 degrees atthat time.

Tuesday 21:

Last day and we don’t need to be at theairport until later this evening. Seven ofus headed off to tour Concha Y Toro, thelargest producer of wines from LatinAmerica comprising around 9 hectaresspread throughout Chile's major wineregions.

At the airport by 8:00 pm for our 11:30pm flight to Auckland. We'll not have aWednesday, arriving home at 4:00 am onThursday. It has been a most excellentadventure but has gone way too fast and Iexperienced way more than I can capturein my diary or on film.

We’re told this year was the toughestDakar ever held in South America, withjust 204 vehicles (78 motorcycles, 15quads, 61 cars and 50 trucks, or 47% ofthose that started) making it to the finish.I thought we were pretty staunchcovering over 5000 kilometres on ourtrip, then I thought about the riders whofinished the Rally; 8734 kilometres over14 days, with one rest day, and theequivalent of what we’ve travelled on thespecial stages; on 450 dirt bikes!Respect!

It was a trip of a lifetime, I'm stoked I didit, and I've got the t-shirt!

Valparaiso markets.

From the start of this story, it must be made plain that both authors suffered terriblyfrom the hardships on the journey.

Saturday 18th January

Assemble for the trip over the Takaka Hillto Waipupu Springs and Farewell Spit –what a ride, almost no traffic to hold us upon the way up and over Takaka Hill.Pleasant walk to the Springs and up thehill for lunch. Whale Stranding.

Return trip to Nelson via Collingwood forgas & Moutere Highway.

Sunday 19th January

Folker assembles with a bunch oflikeminded blokes and blokettes for a rideto Hori Bay. This a deliberate move onmy part to ensure that the R60 and I cantake a bit of the rough stuff. I enjoyed theride tremendously, except for beingresponsible for a hold-up. The bike hadto be push-started on our start for homeand ran on only one cylinder when itstarted. Matthias Otto assured me it wascaused by the very lengthy descent to thebeach, causing the spark plug tomalfunction. I took his word for it and thebike settled to run on both cylinders.

Tuesday 21st January

Weather forecast poor so we flag doing

Rainbow and head for Murchison (gas up& lunch at the Rivers Café), SpringsJunction and Folker hits reserve and hasto fill a bit at Waikari Fully refuel atAmberley. Then head for Ashley Gorgevia Balcairn and Loburn. A day ofpleasurable riding on those lovely SouthIsland roads

Arrive at Ashley gorge and the SouthIsland sandflies. Folker’s engine bolt fails. It holds the engine, sidestand andfootpegs to the frame! After initialthoughts that this is the end of Folker’sride, Al is moreoptimistic. Therewill be anengineering shop innearby Oxford. It’sjust a bolt threadedat both ends afterall. The helpfulcaretaker directs usto an Oxfordengineering shopthe next morning(“Just see Andy,he’ll see you right”)to improve on thedesign. We doubleup on Al’s R75 forthe short ride andare back in no time,

slip the bolt in, tighten it up and aremobile again.

Wednesday 22nd January

We are on the road at 10am headed forDanseys. We ride back to Oxford andturn right for the Waimakariri Gorge andSheffield, Glentunnel, Windwhistle (wellnamed) and the Rakaia Gorge, past caféat Staverley (it looked inviting but we hadserious riding ahead) and on to Geraldineto fill up and call up Al’s son-in-law’sparents Rob and Sharon for coffee.

Then on to Geraldine for Breakfast.Serious sandflies here. A welcome breakwhich allowed us to attack the McKenziePass Road, via Limestone Valley. A bit ofgravel first just for practice. Past theMcKenzie monument and out on to theroad to Gray Hills, looking for the left forkto Hakataramea Pass road. We arrive atGray Hills station, and Al realises we havemissed the turnoff. So after consultingwith the station hands we head back tofind the Hakataramea track. Turns out aswe left the seal and crossed the bridgeon to gravel, attention was on the road, obviously – not the road signage.

So up over the Hakataramea passthrough fords. Al gets too much way on,blown off the pass and decides to takethe R75 onto the roadside rocks, avoiding the drop-off to the river. Puttingthose trials riding skills to good use.Don’t you love those uprated Konishocks and Wirth fork springs……

On a bit we stopped for a break and adrink. After setting off Al realises he isnot wearing his glasses. Where arethey…. at which stop did I forget to putthem on. They have to come off, you see,to get the helmet on and off. I go back tocheck out the last stop and find them inthe grass – all in one piece thankfully. Wecontinue over the old bridge into Kurownext to the new bridge beingconstructed. Fuel up and a beer at theKurow Pub, we really wanted somelunch, but there was none to be had. Onto Duntroon and up the MaerawhenuaValley to Danseys Pass and a night at theDanseys Pub. Good riding here andsome amazing elevation. We were aboutto retire for the night, about 23.00 hrs,

Folker andBruce Watt atTahunanui,standingbehindBruce'sConcoursewinning R50.

Still atTahunanui,ready for thetrip, Folker'smore, erm,agriculturallooking R60.

when there was a knock on the front doorof the pub. It turned out to be a localcontractor whose ute had a flat tyre and aflat spare. He had walked four hours andhe was very cold. You have to wonder, don’t you.

It was here that we first noticed a tinklingsound coming from the front wheel hubof the R60. We surmise it could be dustparticles solidifying into small ‘balls’being the cause. More on this at the end

Thursday 23rd January

Up early for a cooked breakfast and offagain for a circuit of Naseby beforeheading for Ranfurly to fuel up. Then toSt Bathans for hot chocolate and cake atthe Vulcan hotel. Then off to Becks andDrybread and on up Thompsons creek, gorge and saddle, across the DunstanMountains opening and closingboundary gates, crossing fords andhaving a great time of it. Exiting in theCromwell Gorge and we turn left andhead for Cromwell to fuel up, for coffeeand a pie.

Next we head for Bannockburn and thestart of the Nevis Valley. Fultons have agrader and trucks turning the track into acampervan highway. We head on up theNevis valley, crossing many fords.Keeping in mind that this is mid-January,the great New Zealand summer, we notethat we are some 200 m below freshsnow! We are getting good at this. Going

a bit fast, a fordappears over asmall rise, theentry is softcoarse sand. Asthe front wheelbites, Folkeralmost avoids adunking andgracefully rolls offwith the bike.Just hurt thepride this time. Those twinleading-shoefront brakes ofyesteryear arenot too bad, really. We go alittle more

cautiously after this. Somewhere at thetop Al stops to open the extensive BMWtool kit and tighten up this muffler.Eventually we arrive at the end nearGarston. There are warning signs hereabout this being a 4WD track and beprepared to self-recover vehicles. Just aswell we ignored those from the start. Wemight not have had so much fun today.

The menu at Kingston was moreappealing than at Garston so on toKingston for the night. We book in to amotel room, next to a fine red Chevypickup. Turns out there were some halfdozen pre-war and immediate post-warFords and Chevrolet pick-ups staying thenight. They had travelled the Nevisahead of us.

Friday 24th January

Push start Folker. We had at this stagediscovered a small crack at the base ofthe R60’s kick-starter and thought it bestnot to use it till it was fixed or replaced.Turn on the ignition on the R75, push thestarter and blip-all the lights on the dashgo out. Oh crap. So what can this be? Is itthe starter relay, the starter, the diodeboard? So off with the helmet, glovesand jacket, and out with the voltmeter.Open the seat & tank bag and pull out thetool kit, voltmeter and idiots guide toboxer electrics. Off with the tank.Disconnect the battery. First up what’sthe battery voltage? 12.7 volts – ok that’swhat I expect.

Voltage to the ignition switch, 12v whenits off, no volts when the ignition is on,but where is the voltage going, have I gota voltage sink somewhere? Open up thestarter cover, have I got power to this, yes, rock the bike on the starter – stillwon’t turn over. Is the solenoid locked up,no.

After several phone calls to boxer friendsand about 5 hours of frustration, Bruce ofconcourse-winning R50 fame andBarbara Watt offer to drive over fromOamaru to help sort things out. Beyondthe call of duty really. We go sightseeing, except we are emotionally drained and gohave a beer instead.

Bruce and Barbara arrive after dinner andBruce quickly diagnoses a flat battery-that is strange. Seems I’ve left theignition on all day. With no dash lights, I’dforgotten which was on and which off.Anyway we borrow a car charger and setit charging overnight.

Saturday 25th January

Bruce is up at first light and testing thebattery again. It has taken no charge. It’sstuffed.

He improvises a set of jumper leads tosee if we can get the R75 to start off thecar battery. Success, so where to get anew battery on a Saturday in theselatitudes? Queenstown Yamaha is ourbest bet so we pack up the bikes andprepare to leave – I shout Bruce andBarbara the cost of the room – the least Icould do.

At last we pack up the bikes, and jumpstart the R75, raising the idle so it is lesslikely to stall. Folker gets the usual pushstart and we are off, me in the lead, Bruceat the rear, just in case. At QueenstownYamaha we are lucky, they have areplacement 30Ah motobatt in foranother job, what luck. It is bought andduly installed in the bike park. Time for aquick coffee & cake for breakfast and wehead to Hokitika hoping to get to theWoodstock Rally and a relaxing eveningwith live band and good company.

Riding over the Crown Range with hardlya delay is fantastic. We bypass Wanakavia Alberttown and head for Hawea andup through The Neck to Makarora. This

is one of the best bits of riding anywherein New Zealand. We stop for fuel and arehailed by a group of Canadians, Germansand even a couple of Romanians ridingaround NZ. They appreciate and like theold bikes.

We fuel up and head for Haast Pass, stopup the road from the Gates of Haast, topay our respects at the small rock cairn tocommemorate the young Canadiancouple swept off the road in their campervan last spring.

On to Haast and up the coast towardHokitika. Along the coast we hit a stronghead wind. By the time we reach Fox westop for fuel and decide we could notreally face another two hours of stronghead winds. We book in at the Top 10. Aquick wash and down to the Cook SaddlePub for a beer or two and dinner. Folkerchats up staff as usual. Before long hehas the email address of Annie fromFrankfurt, someone to look up for acoffee later in the year on his planned tripto Germany (so says Al, I am justpractising my German, truly). Before longhe has swapped tables and is deep inconversation with a Swiss couple on aguided tour of NZ. He has the gift offerretting out German speakers whereever we go. I tag along, not alwaysfollowing the conversation, but its greatfun.

Fed and watered, we arrive back at theTop 10 and later that evening the forecastrain arrives with a vengeance.

Sunday 26th January

We are up early, it is pouring cats anddogs outside. We pack up and giveFolker his push start, Al’s bike fires upfirst time, a far cry from our last stay atFox when it took an hour or two to getboth bikes going. Something about valveclearances that time.

We head north out of town in steady rain.Just up the hill we are halted by a treeacross the road. Cars on the other side, the bread delivery van included, had beenwaiting an hour, someone having goneinto Fox to arrange for the tree to becleared away. Why is this taking so long?Folker turns back to find out whatprogress is being made. Never deterredby a small beech tree, Al cleared awayvines to make way for the R75 to pass, viathe deep water table. On his return acouple of minutes later, Folker assists Alget the R75 through under the tree. Revthat motor and slip that clutch – old-timertrials style. Folker removes more vinesand bark and manages to get the R60through under the tree without leavingthe road seal.

The riding is terrible into driving rain andwind. Around the headlands the going isslow because the roads are awash. Onthe straights, the head wind and rain isunrelenting. At times we are reduced to70-80km/h by slow traffic or by theheadwind alone.

When we finally arrive in Hokitika we are

cold, wet and fatigued. We head forPete’s place hoping for bacon, eggs andwhitebait. Pete is not home so we headfor Stumpers for a full cooked breakfastand hot chocolate. After killing severalhours and consuming more coffee as wewait for the rain to abate, we eventuallyhead off again at 14.00 hrs, this time withdry spare gloves. Plan B is to head out toJacksons and go through to NelsonCreek and finish the day at Reefton orMurchison . Plan A was to head forHanmer Springs and meet the NelsonChapter at the end of Molesworth at theend of the next day. But the forecast wetweather meant we were not going to riskthe river crossings on Molesworth. AtJacksons, it looked so much brighter upover Arthurs Pass, so it was Plan C, wewent East. It got brighter all right andthen it got darker, windier and wetter. Bythe time we fuelled up at Springfield, thethought of a hot shower, wine and foodwas too good to pass up. We bookedinto the town’s only motel to dry out thegear and headed to the pub for a heartydinner. The kitchen is closed – the cookhas cut her hand earlier in the day! Nofood tonight! We walk away somewhathungry, deflated and disbelieving.

A bit later we get word the pub has foundanother chef and we head back for ameal. Saved.

Monday 27th January

We head for Oxford, retracing our stepsfrom earlier in the trip and stop forbreakfast at Seagers Café and then onthrough Ashley Gorge, Springs,Murchison, and Richmond for the nightwith Al’s daughter’s family. At oneparticular point, Al pulls out to pass atruck and gets that tell-tale feeling in theclutch lever as the cable shreds itself.Knowing there are tricky lights tonegotiate in Richmond and there are onlya few strands left, all the gear changesform here are with no clutch.

We arrive safely and in one piece inRichmond.

Tuesday 28th January

In the morning Al replaces the cable withat spare he’s carrying. It’s a bit shortbecause it’s actually a /7 clutch cable, soa clutch cable repair is attempted usingthe old cable but there is not enoughlength beyond the sheathing. Using adifferent route, the slightly short /7 cableis fitted with enough slack for full steeringmovement – success! We are on thehome stretch now, stopping for anotherice cream at Pelorous River. We arrive atthe Picton Ferry terminal with 30min tospare and are hurriedly waved onto theboat.

We park ourselves in the rear bar, andtake in the exciting cricket NZ vs India. Inthe background a band plays, not sure ifwas music, more like cat wailing, buteach to his own. We had the company ofother BMW-philes returning from the rallyand they would confirm the wailing bit.

Dis-embarking we headed straight intoWellington rush hour traffic. Fantastic.Arriving in Upper Hutt at Al’s, we park upthe bikes. Thanks for your company, Al.Next morning Folker heads out to seeDamon at MufflerWorks to get the kickstarter repaired. Then back home toHawke’s Bay. 3500km on the old R60, aspill, the engine bolt that broke, a speedothat stopped working coming up ArthursPass, good company, riding skillsimproved. I want to go again!

Once home, I put the R60 on the stand tomore easily service it, change all oils andcheck on the reason for the speedofailure and the mysterious tinkling soundfrom the front wheel. The speedo cablewas simply about 5 mm too short on thebottom (driving) portion. It was a littlefrayed when I put the bike back together,so at the time I ground the frayed partaway. I had a new cable of the correctlength made locally. The tinkling turnedout to be two broken spokes. I amwaiting on the arrival of half a dozen newspokes. When one considers that thebike has covered some 230 000 miles(about 370 000 km) it is perhaps notsurprising that metal fatigue has dealt tosome items. Nothing is forever

Excellent service inChristchurchI recently rode down to Christchurch andleft my bike at Waimack Parking (findthem on the net) intending to return laterto ride back home to Tauranga. Theywere friendly and helpful, providing a veryuseful shuttle service.

I was a bit concerned about a vibration Ihad noticed on the way to Christchurch.

One phone call later, HamptonMotorcycles had picked up the bike fromWaimack Parking, given it a test ride, drained the final drive oil and finding nometal bits, refilled the final drive and saidit would be fine for the trip home with theoffer of help should I have any trouble onthe way home.

Needless to say, the trip home went fine. And the cost for this excellent service -nothing at all.

Amazing! So if you need good service inChristchurch you know that HamptonMotorcycles and Waimack Parkingdeliver.

An Open letter to Members and Past MembersMost members will be aware of a commemorative book planned to celebrate the 40 year milestone of BMWOR next year.

To this end, I invite any member who would like to create a short bio of his/her motorcycle life for consideration of inclusion into thebook. I would expect about half an A4 page; certainly not more than a page. To keep everybody uniform, please write in the firstperson. (As you would say it.) A photo of yourself without wearing a helmet and (preferably) your bike would a good idea. I expectthe photo will be about 100mm x 50mm published.

Additionally, if you think you might have interesting photos or other relevant stories, do please contact me. You need to own copy-write to any documents or images.

Please send digital copy or advice of intent to, to [email protected] before 30th. April 2014, or address to me c/oSecretary, PO Box 109-245, Newmarket, Auckland 1149.

This publication is our story and it is up to us to tell it. (Don’t assume it will necessarily happen again.) Do it now. This is a greatchance to contribute to the Register and become a real part of its lore and history.

I thank you in advance for your contributions.

The New Zealand CycleClassic

This is an annual sporting fixture that hasbeen running for the past twenty sevenyears and is recognised as the premierinternational road cycling event in NewZealand. This year for the third time itwas held in and around the PalmerstonNorth area. Starting on Wednesday 29thJanuary with an individual time trialaround the John F Kennedy Drive/Airportarea and finishing with a mountain climbto the top of the Saddle Road on Sunday2nd February 2014.

The classic is recognised overseas as theroad tour with the highest internationalstanding in New Zealand. This wasreflected in the quality of the NewZealand and overseas riders taking partin this year’s event. Top national andprofessional riders from England,Singapore, Azerbaijan, Australia, theNetherlands, Ireland, Hong Kong and thebest of New Zealand made up the field ofthe biggest cycle tour to be held in NewZealand. A total of eleven overseas teamsplus nine New Zealand teams (120 ridersin all) took part in New Zealand’s andOceania only UCI 2.2 rated internationaltour.

Each year the NZCT Cycle Classicunearths new talent, and a number ofthose riders have gone on to win stagesin the Tour de France, the Tour of Italyand world championships among others.

The Manawatu region has to be one ofthe best areas for cycling in this countryand according to Jorge Sandoval, therace promoter it is really “the best placeto ride a bike” in New Zealand and theBMWOR were very privileged to beinvited once again to act as MotorcycleRoad Traffic Marshalls.

This involved some 10/12 members andfriends from all parts of New Zealand -Dunedin, Nelson, Wellington, Aucklandand of course several from PalmerstonNorth/Rangitikei/Wanganui Areaconverging on Palmerston North for 5days of exciting and adventuresomemotorcycle riding. We worked closelywith the local Police and race officials and

to our credit there were no majorincidents to speak of (well, that is apartfrom one mishap with a certain BMWmember doing some stunt riding in frontof a Police car!!!).

All in all we had a great time and I’m surethat our riding skills have improved tenfold. It was particularly pleasing to seeour member from Wanganui, PaulRoxburgh (this years Oooops Awardrecipient), back on a bike with a grin thesize of the Hoover Damn as he weaved inand out between the cyclists.

Of course it was not all work. After eachstage we all adjourned to a local café for amuch needed caffeine injection and adebrief of the days stage together withthe inevitable tales of any exciting and/orfunny incidents that had occurred on theroad.

Then on the Saturday night we all gottogether for a few beverages and BBQ.

The Executive would like to acknowledgeand thank all those that took part andhopefully we will see you all be backagain for next years event.

An Intrepid Journey tothe National Rally.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the untoldstory of a small band of motorcyclists andpartners who, in their wisdom decided tomake the journey to the 2014 NationalRally at Nelson a memorable event.

The participants were: President Tibsyand First Lady Ann, Secretary candidateDave Oldershaw, GS convertee Peter andAnn Truter and yours truly and Joy.

The journey started when we all met onthe 9am Interislander on Thursday 16thJanuary. Four 1200GS bikes all laden upwith pannier luggage and set for a voyagethrough the Molesworth Station, destination Hanmer Springs.

A very pleasant crossing where we werejoined by fellow Register members Barryand Barbara Petherick who were on theirway south to meet up with relations. The

three hour sailing slipped speedily by aswe all conversed about whatmotorcyclists normally converse about –motorbikes!

After watching an impatient KTM riderand pillion successfully dislodge a Harleyriding lady from her stead in the bowelsof the ferry as we were waiting todisembark we headed through toBlenheim. After a brief fuel stop weheaded south on SH1 stopping for lunchat a Riverland Roadhouse (a truck stop6.5km south of Blenheim). Afterpartaking of a sumptuous lunch (wellsome of us – who shall remainanonymous but suffice to say he holds avery high office - went for the rather largesausage meal and even tried to con anextra sausage!!) we met up with a ratherinteresting character travelling the lengthand breadth of NZ on a ‘LambrettaInnocenti’. Subsequent detective workcarried out by yours truly has led me tothis web site – ‘

http://www.lambretta.it/tino_nadia.php?lingua=eng ’. In the five minutes that wespent with Tino he regaled us with justwhere he had travelled on his trusteeLambretta. You would be amazed; he hastravelled across Australia, America (northand south) and Europe to name just a fewplaces.

From there we travelled south along SH1turning right into the Awatere Valley Roadand enjoyed a leisurely ride up the valleyadmiring the numerous grape vineplantings on the way.

After 26km of seal we hit the gravel andbeing a hot dry day there was a highdegree of dust factor so we extended ourfollowing distances to avoid swallowingmouthfuls of vintage Marlborough soil.

We continued on for several kilometreseventually stopping for a breather andwell-earned water break. It was here thatJoy produced some home baking, needless to say this was very welcomeand unsurprisingly was disposed of inrecord time!

It was also at this stop that it was decidedthat President Peter would take the lead(yours truly having had the pleasure ofbeing dust free rider up until now) andDave O kindly offered to follow asnumber two rider and act as the gateopener. Well this system workedextremely well for a number of gates.President Peter and Ann would duly stop;Dave O would dismount and open thegate and we would all follow through.Ann Truter would then attend to theclosing and then we would all continueon our merry way.

But – as with all systems Murphy’s Lawkicks in at some point.

And of course it did with our merry band.We had just successfully negotiated agate stop and were following each otherin our designated order at suitable dustfree distances when upon rounding acorner the Truters and Woods cameacross Dave O stopped on the side of the

The full team: The Oldershaws (Bike and Dave), the Tibbses, theWoods and the Truters.

road looking suitably apprehensive. Hisstead had stopped, just up and said ‘nomore of this dust’!!

Meantime the dust trail from PresidentPeter and First Lady Ann was seen to bedisappearing over the horizon. Nevermind though, we all thought, they willrealise something is wrong and return togive us a hand. (Yeah right!!!).

So, we that remained, duly looked atDave’s bike, tried all remedies we couldthink of with no success. We were thenthinking f-f-f-for goodness sake what arewe going to do. No AA service out hereand alas no cellphone coverage. Were wehere for the night?

Several attempts were made by Dave torestart but to no avail. It was time forsome divine intervention – I walked overto Dave and his ill stead, placed my handon the tank and said ‘Try again Dave’, andlo and behold it came to pass that thebike fired up and purred like a kitten. NowI won’t say that I could perform thismiracle at will again but I can say we werefive very relieved folk. I say five asPresident Tibsy and First Lady Ann weretotally unaware of our plight, in fact theywere some 3 or 4 km’s up the road sittingresplendently upon their horse waiting atthe next closed gate for Dave to arriveand perform his designated duty of gateopener! Well I suppose being Presidenthas to have some advantages!!

With the breakdown drama behind us weheaded off towards Hanmer Springs via

Jacks Pass to arrive at our Motel (SpaLodge) and for some of us a welcomeswim in the hot pools.

Next morning we were all up and rearingto go. The day looked as though it wouldbe sunny and hot. Well sunny, yes it was,but hot, not at all for the ride through toSprings Junction. In fact it was bl…..y(decidedly) cold and a warm coffee wasjust the story at the junction café. It washere that Tibsy decided to inform

everyone, including the café assistant, that it was Joy’s birthday. Shortlythereafter out came a small roundchocolate cake of which we all had a tinymorsel. No candles though, but as Joysaid ‘it wouldn’t have had enough roomto accommodate the number required’.

While there we were joined by an influx ofBMW’s, firstly an overseas tour party ofabout a dozen bikes and then by asmaller group of Auckland members

They must have been real hobbits back inthe day, if Tibsy has to stoop.

heading towards the Rally.

The weather had turned slightly damp bynow so we decided that we should headoff towards the Maruia Saddle Road, ournext gravel adventure on the way to theRally.

If you own a GS or similar then this road isa must. To get there you travel about35km north on SH65 turning right ontoMaruia Saddle Road.

A word of warning – as you turn ontoMaruia Saddle Road you will quitepossibly come across a double string ofelectric fencing tape used by the localfarmer to shepherd his stock over thenarrow road. Don’t do what one of ourmembers did - grab the tape by theplastic insulator handle but then whenthe tension wouldn’t allow the release ofthe hook from the fence strainer placeyour hand on said strainer – it has atendance to make your hairstand on end and your eyesbulge!!

With that bit of drama safelynegotiated we thenpreceded through what Iwould consider one of themost beautiful and scenicgravel roads in NewZealand. It is a 42kmnarrow gravel road thattakes you through toMurchison. The road takesyou through beech forestwith fantastic moss growthat times creating anoverhead veranda. Forthose who like a bit of achallenge, well there areseveral fords, most of whichare at the bottom of a steepdescent, a hairpin bend, before a steep ascent.Quite exciting for any pillionnot overly experienced ongravel.

However, don’t let this putyou off. We all arrived safeand sound at Murchison fora welcome lunch stop.

After lunch we travelled4.5k’s up SH6 beforeturning right onto ManglesValley Road. Stayed on thisroad to the "T" junction ofTutaki Road. Turning leftand travelling a fewkilometres before hanginga right onto Braeburn Track, this takes you throughsome more sceniclandscape through to LakeRotoroa. From there it wasall black carpet up GowanValley Road to SH6 and onto Ranzu Road, Hope, where we called in on Gregand Steph Buck andenjoyed a cuppa and chat.

From there it was a short

hop, step and jump to Tahunanui HolidayPark in time for Rally Registration anddinner.

It was only two days but we passedthrough some magnificent country, had alot of laughs shared with some greatcompany.

Roll on next years Rally……

Robin and Joy, "Look, Ma, no helmets!"

Not a good look in that neck of thewoods, Woods. Apart from rubbing yournoggin on the road if you spill, the waspstings leave you with lumps on yourphysog.
