From the President

Tyler TribbyPremier Home Mortgage2018 Interim President

Dear BHHBA Members,While I would not have anticipated that I would be writing the final newsletter for 2018, I am always happy and honored the serve BHHBA in any way. This year we have had some tremendous success, while also navigating some unexpected events throughout the year. As always, I continue to be grateful to be involved as a member and that gratitude is passed on to anyone who continues to invest in and support this crucial organization of volunteers.

I want to begin by recognizing our elected 2019 Executive Board and their positions:

Jeff Lage – PresidentTeri McNally – Vice PresidentShane Regelin – TreasurerDaene Boomsma – SecretaryDarin Howie – Board AdvisorI will also serve as Past President for the 2019 Executive Board.

In reference to the tremendous successes we have had, we recently celebrated some outstanding members among us at our Awards Banquet. I would again like to recognize Daene Boomsma and his team at Boom Construction, Jeremy Muth with Select Construction, and Jesse Welbig with Builders First Source for their incredible contributions to our Home Build House that was recently sold. Because of the work of all involved on this project, BHHBA received significant funds to be used for our upcoming warehouse remodel. On behalf of our entire organization, we are immensely thankful for all of the time, work, and resources that went into this project with the sole outcome being to benefit our organization. Thank you all so much.

Another great success was the completion of our recent Care Project

for Pat Spargur in Custer. Pat was living in a home that she was unable to maintain and needed significant work to make it a safe and quality residence for her. Our Care Project team coordinated a great effort to replace windows, paint, and complete updates to provide for this local resident who was unable to do this on her own.

A couple notable events coming up:January 19 is the: 7th Annual Pub Crawl Fundraiser to benefit Aryonna Wipf and Dustin Wurdeman. This event will kick off at 2pm at Thirsty’s in downtown Rapid City. February 19 – 21: Annual IBS Conference in Las Vegas, NV. Please contact the BHHBA Office if you need assistance in making plans to attend.

I look forward to 2019 with great anticipation and excitement. We have outstanding, seasoned leadership which is exactly what we will need to accomplish the serious initiatives ahead of us. I wish you all a very happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you in 2019.

Merry Christmas from the BHHBA Staff.

Membership Minute

Wow, I’ve already been here a month and the time has flown by. I am excited to be a part of the Black Hills Home Builders team, and I am looking forward to the year ahead and working with all of you.

The 2018 Membership Drives have been a huge success with 76 new members recruited from January 1 through November. That’s pretty amazing. Our retention has grown as well, so thank you to all of you who have recruited new members and encouraged renewal, not only to support the association, but for the industry as a whole.

Thank you to everyone who recruited this year (see the tally on page 15). Thank you for helping to grow our association. A HUGE thank you to those members who recruited 5 or more Associate and Builder Members. Those members who will not have to pay for their 2019 dues are: Darin Howie with Howie Construction, Ross Jones with Jones Construction, Dean Hedrick with Hult Homes, Amber Irving with State Farm Gregg Fullerton and Curt Cartwright with Rapid City Window & Glass. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for going above and beyond.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the SPIKE of the Year winner, which will be awarded at the BHHBA Christmas Party on Saturday, December 1st, also to be posted in the January newsletter.

Speaking of the Christmas party, it’s not too late to attend, and we have some great giveaways planned for the evening! You could win $250 cash and a gun or two, including a Benelli Shotgun and an XDM Handgun! In addition, we’ve lined up some

SUPER FABULOUS BELLY BUSTING ENTERTAINMENT, with Comedian Hypnotist Rick Bultez.

Finally, we are starting early with the 2019 Membership Drives, which includes recruiting to get your 2019 (IBS) International Builders Show Registration paid for and your new member could get their IBS Registration paid for as well. This Membership Drive starts on December 1, 2018 and goes through February 11, 2019. Each Associate or Builder Member recruited during this time frame would be entered into a drawing to have their 2019 IBS Registration paid for. The winners spike that recruited them would also get their IBS Registration paid for – THAT’S WHERE YOU AS THE RECRUITER BENEFIT. So jump on board and start recruiting today. Remember these recruits will also count in your tally to recruit 5 new Builder or Associate members in 2019 to get your 2020 dues for free!!

Best Wishes for a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!Jody Keegan, Sales Director

Home Show

Booths are filling up quickly for the 44th Annual Home Show. It is looking like it will be another successful year. In years past you have all helped tremendously by including the Home Show in your advertising. Please check with your

marketing and advertising folks, and think about including a “Come see us at the Home Show…” tag line in your pre-show advertising. It’s never too early to start planning!

There are a few sponsorships still up for grabs. This is a great op-portunity to showcase your business at a low cost. Sponsorships are available in slots starting as low as $500 and as high as $2,500. We have a level for every budget so don’t miss out!

We do still have a few Block Booths available if you are interested. Our goal is to bring in those vendors with larger construction equipment so that show attendees can get up close and personal with the products.

The “Do It Yourself” stage will be back again for 2018. We are interested in new and fresh hands-on presentations to ensure the DIY stage is a continued success.

Please keep spreading the word! It definitely takes all of us to make each show bigger and better than the last.

If you have any questions, please call the Association office at (605) 348-7850. You can also email [email protected].

Happy New Year!

When I took the oath of office in January 2015, I was taking on an office that was a failing bureaucracy with no accountability. Business filings were over 6 weeks behind and UCC filings were over 80 days behind, among other areas in disarray. I had to put an action plan together quickly to turn the office around and regain the trust that the Secretary of State’s office demands. As my term ends this year, I wanted to share with you the long list of projects that were completed and how we turned the office around in the short time I was here. I think the best way to recap is to highlight just a few areas:•My priority was to upgrade the business and Uniform Commercial Code online filing systems so that customers can file documents instantaneously. We have filed over 79,000 active businesses in FY2018, which is an all-time high, compared to FY2012 in which the office filed 49,660 active businesses. The ease of our new online business filing system hit another filing record in new businesses formed in FY2018, totaling 8,864, compared to 6,415 new businesses formed in FY2012. UCC filings totaled 55,646 for FY18 in the new system. •I have made a concerted effort to make sure that more information is easily accessible on the website. For example, Executive Proclamations are now available to the public dating back to 1903. For those of you utilizing the new online business filing system, you may have noticed that there are more documents readily available going back over 25 years. Over 5.3 million documents have been uploaded and are now available on the business/UCC filing sites.•I upgraded the concealed carry permit that our office issues to a more official looking permit. South Dakota now has over 100,000 active concealed carry permit holders in the state compared to 87,655 active permit holders in 2016.•I focused on registering more voters. My Value the Vote tour has led me to high schools, universities and service organizations across the state. Since taking office, voter registration numbers have grown by almost 20,000 new registered voters to a total of nearly 540,000 registered voters in the state of South Dakota.•I implemented a Zero-Based budgeting operation to run at the speed of business, not at the speed of government. This format allowed me to revert (money not spent) $69,000 back to the state general fund. In the last two fiscal years, I have requested budget cuts of over $174,000. All while growing revenue by nearly $2 million more to the state’s general fund to the tune of $7.5 million in FY2017. I have always said that a good leader surrounds herself with even better people and that is what I have in my team. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve you.
