The Kind of Care You Expect and Deserve…in the Comfort of Your Own Home

Wherever that might be. Soon we will offer a second residential hospice home to serve patients.

All hospices are not the same. Prairie Home Hospice is the only free-standing, Medicare certified, non-profit hospice in Lyon County.

We were established by a caring community to serve the community.

The community continues to be a partner in the work we do every day.

Connection to community and the quality of care and compassion that has been our hallmark since 1984, are why Prairie Home Hospice continues to be the #1 hospice provider of choice in Lyon County today.

It Takes a Community

Meet our Volunteers of the Month

WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN

A SPECIAL TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers have always been the heart and soul of

the work we do as Prairie Home Hospice. Expanding

our capacity to serve hospice patients and their

families by opening a second Hospice House

(McLaughlin House), increases the need for volunteers

to help provide compassionate service and support to

patients living there. We will need volunteers to help

with meals, visit with patients and their families, assist

with activities, assist in maintaining the facility, gardens

and grounds, etc.

Our Hospice Houses are very special places that allow

community members to play a role in ensuring people

facing a terminal illness have a homey environment

that offers the best in hospice care. It’s a place where

patients and their families can spend precious time

together. But it’s more. It’s about demonstrating that

hospice patients and their families are not alone…that

they are surrounded by a caring community during a

very difficult time. It’s about making this final life

experience one that reflects the best in us as a

community.

For information on how you can become a Prairie Home Hospice volunteer, contact us at (507)337-0080.

One of the last good things that may happen in a

person’s life…is a hospice volunteer!

Your Choice…Our Promise

It’s Your Choice. When hospice or home care is needed, it is

your legal right to select the agency you feel will be the best fit for you and your family.

All hospice and home care agencies are not the same. It is important to note that although Prairie Home Hospice has been providing hospice care in Lyon County since 1984, we are no longer the only hospice agency available in Lyon County. That means, if you choose to have Prairie Home Hospice as your hospice care provider, you must be clear in letting your physician(s), hospital discharge planner and/or others know that you wish to have Prairie Home Hospice & Community Care as your hospice or home care provider. They must respect your choice.

Our Promise. We hope you’ll choose Prairie Home Hospice &

Community Care as your care provider, if and when you or a loved one needs hospice or home care. Our experienced and qualified care team will meet with you and your family to explain our services; provide information about your options and the kind of care we provide; and help assess your care needs – now or in the future.

Why Prairie Home Hospice & Community Care?

Our Commitment to Quality o We provide staffing levels that allow our care teams the

time they need to provide the kind of care that patients deserve.

o Our patient response rates are exceptional. When you need us, we’ll be there.

o We respect and honor patient choices, preferences and beliefs.

Our Experience Matters o Our reputation for providing quality care since 1984 speaks

for itself. We’re the hometown care you’ve come to know and trust.

Founded & Supported by the Communities We Serve o The only non-profit, freestanding hospice and home care

provider serving this area that was established by the community to serve the community. We remain committed to the same values that we were founded on in 1984…providing quality care and compassionate service.

o Every dollar we earn or raise stays right here in the community and is reinvested in meeting the needs of the community and those we serve.

McLaughlin House Capital Campaign We are blessed to be part of a very caring and generous community. Just over a year ago, we turned to the community to ask for support

to purchase, renovate and establish a second hospice home in Marshall. We set a goal of raising $780,000 to support the establishment of McLaughlin House. We are pleased to announce that we have exceeded our goal, raising over $1,040,000! The additional funds raised will help to cover project costs that exceeded our initial estimates (due to changes in federal building codes), and allows us to add a dedicated bathroom for the family suite. THANK YOU to the many families, individuals, organizations and businesses who have donated towards the

capital campaign. We are working with Awards Plus to design a donor recognition plaque to place outside of the new home, acknowledging all who donated to make McLaughlin House possible.

We look forward to opening McLaughlin House soon. Watch your local newspaper and listen to KMHL Radio for announcements regarding our Grand Opening event.

The following donations were received January through April 2018.

If you are a Thrivent Financial member, you have access to donations that can be directed to Prairie Home Hospice & Community Care through a

Thrivent Financial Action Grant

Call your Thrivent Financial Representative to find out how.

Breast Cancer Facts Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, after lung cancer. About 1 in 8 U.S. women — 12.4% — will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed, along with 61,000 new

cases of non-invasive breast cancer (also known as carcinoma in situ). About 40,450 women are expected to die in 2016 from breast cancer, though there has been a decrease in death rates

since 1989, with larger decreases in women under 50. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advancements, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.

Mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, but they can save lives by finding breast cancer as early as possible.

All women 40 and over should get an annual mammogram and an annual clinical breast exam. Women at increased risk (e.g., family history, genetic tendency, past breast cancer) should talk to their doctors about

the benefits and limitations of starting mammography screening earlier, having additional test such as breast ultrasound and MRI or having more frequent exams.
