Building Industry Association members!

A lot has happened over the last month in our industry that will provide a benefit and a deterrent to our success. Recently, Governor Scott helped us by putting a hold on a new building code requirement for a blower door test and a ventilation condition for new construction. In addition to the state helping our cause, Sarasota Commissioners have also decided to lower building permit fees 25% beginning in September

of this year. Sarasota Commissioners also passed a revised fiscal neutrality condition for land developers that want to develop east of the urban service boundary, opening up the ability for new homes being built.

Conversely, the new building code that went into effect on July 1, is full of unnecessary codes that will be burdensome to the majority of all builders and trades, including those that remodel and build additions. Additionally, both Sarasota and Manatee County will be discussing the increase of all impact fees over the next few months. The increase of these fees will be a detriment to the growth of our businesses and this industry.

The Building Industry Association, FHBA and the NAHB will continue to fight to prevent these types of deterrents.

On another note, this week the Southeast Building Conference (SEBC) is taking place in Orlando. This year’s SEBC is expected to be a great time for learning about new products at the trade show, learning about our new building codes through classes as well as becoming more involved with the FHBA. Of course there will be many opportunities to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones at a number of awesome parties, I hope to see you there!
