The “Down Time” Winter GardenBy Bob Beyer, Travis County Master Gardener

is the winter period the “ho hum” time of year for your garden? does your garden lack the interest that draws you to it during this time? Well, let’s change that image!

Plan for “all season” color, not just “seasonal”.

so much emphasis and effort is placed on our spring to fall garden. the winter garden gets overlooked and is usually unattractive. All season plants that are permanent, preplanned, and integrated into the overall garden design can change that. seasonal plants are temporary, and meant only for specific periodic plantings. the winter season in Austin generally runs from december 1 thru March 31. Why let winter be your garden’s “down time” when it can be nearly as vibrant and enjoyable as the prime spring to fall gardening “prime time”. We are fortunate to not have severe

winter conditions in Austin, but with some limitations, can enjoy year round color and visual interest in our gardens. see our presentation (with plant pictures) on Winter gardening at www.centraltexasgardening.info/wintercolor.pdf . Winter doesn’t have to be a “down time” for your central texas garden.

AVERy RANCH Violation RepoRt

By Steve Roebuck, President - AROA

We have noticed that occasionally violations are sent to the incorrect address, resulting in understandably disgruntled homeowners so we have addressed this by asking the management company to try and be more precise and careful. in response, Alliance is completing the transition to a new violation reporting system. What this means that is in general, a “gentle reminder” letter may still be received, but as violations progress, the letter will contain photos of the violation, helping to identify exactly what needs to be corrected. it is our hope that this will clear up misunderstanding and help answer the questions that many residents have after receiving a violation letter. remember, you can always submit questions via e-mail to [email protected] or by phoning Alliance at 512-310-2300.

Here’s hoping you had a Great Christmas and a safe and

smart Financial Moves for New Parentsif you’ve just had a new baby, your life is filled with more joy (but

less sleep). You’re probably already aware of the time and effort you must invest in raising your child, but you may not have thought as much about another aspect — the financial one.

Consider this: the average cost of raising a child to age 17 is now $222,360, according to a U.s. department of Agriculture report on how much middle-income, two-parent families spend on their offspring. And this is the amount you might spend before your son or daughter heads to college. Clearly, you need to start making the financial moves necessary to take your child from diapers to a degree. Here are some suggestions for doing just that:

• Purchase sufficient life insurance. When it was just you and your spouse, it was a good idea for you to have life insurance — but now that you have a child, it’s an absolute necessity. if you have any doubts about the value of life insurance, just look again at that $222,360 figure above, and then tack on the costs of four years of college. if you or your spouse were to die unexpectedly, would the survivor earn enough to raise and educate your child? in this day and age, that isn’t likely. so make sure that you have adequate life insurance in place.

• Prepare a will. Obviously, you hope to enjoy a long life — one in which you see your child grow to adulthood. But none of us can predict the future, so it’s essential that you draw up a will to provide for the care of your child, both financially and physically. When you create a will, you can name a guardian to step in and take care of your child, if necessary, and you can make sure your child receives your financial assets. However, many people go beyond writing a will and establish a living trust, which gives them more control over how and when they want their assets distributed. Your legal advisor can help you prepare a will and determine if a living trust is appropriate for your needs.

• Maintain adequate cash. to help pay for

all those expenses related to child rearing, keep enough cash on hand. By having enough resources available in liquid accounts, you can avoid having to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs.

• Save early and often for college. it’s never too soon to start saving for the high costs of higher education. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged vehicle and may be a great option for your college savings. Contributions to a 529 plan are made with after-tax dollars, and have the opportunity to grow tax-free. Withdrawals used for qualified higher education expenses are also tax free. Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit depending on the plan and state.

• Stay balanced. As we’ve seen, it takes a lot of money to raise a child. But even as you’re meeting these expenses, think about your own future, particularly your retirement. strive to strike a balance between the money you spend on your child and the amount you invest in your 401(k), irA and other retirement-savings vehicles.

You can’t put a price-tag on your child’s future, but when it comes to taking care of that child, you’ll want to know the costs involved — and be prepared for them. Agent Realty

Turning New years Resolutions into all Year Resolutions

by Sarah S. Jordan, MS

January is here, and so is the tradition of making new Year’s resolutions. And many times, the tradition of breaking those resolutions. We find ourselves excited and motivated for the start of a new year, and within a few months we often experience frustration because we simply cannot stick with the resolutions we set.

i have been teaching fitness classes, personal training, and coordinating fitness programs for over a decade, and i see it every year. gyms are packed from January through March, and then many members just seem to disappear or give up.

Here is my question. What can we do to stick with exercise and making healthy choices for twelve months out of the year instead of just three? it is not easy, but laying a proper and realistic foundation is the key. And remembering that if we do fall off the wagon, we need to hop right back on and not give up. As i have outlined in some of my previous articles, commitment, time management, setting measurable goals, and being realistic are all vital components to our success.

if a sedentary and overweight client begins training with me and says, “My goal is to lose 50 pounds in five weeks,” that client is sure to fail before she even begins. that rate of weight loss is simply not healthy, realistic, or lasting. However, if the same client says, “My goal is to workout three days a week for 20-50 minutes each time and as a result, lose 50 pounds this year,” she is off to a great start! that goal is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound.

people often ask me what my new Year’s resolutions are, and to be honest, i don’t really set them anymore. You see… i, too, have set resolutions many times in the past,

and within weeks or months felt defeated and gave up because they were not realistic. instead, i find myself setting little goals throughout the year, but they very rarely include numbers on a scale.

setting “number goals” (ex: “i want to lose 20 pounds by May”) certainly has its merit, but i encourage my clients to move toward setting the “How can i become a better and happier person/wife/mother?” type of goals. And why limit ourselves to January? if you find something you want to do or become in March, set that goal right then and there, and create a specific plan of action that will get you there. Keeping a positive and realistic spin on our goal setting throughout the year will allow us to experience more success. And that is what matters in the end, right? Feeling successful and improved because of the things we learn along life’s journey.

Here Are A Few Tips To setting All year Resolutions.• set s.M.A.r.t. goals. they should be

specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

• Find what works for YOU. if joining a gym is not realistic for you, find other activities, classes, and opportunities that don’t involve a gym membership.

• get support. that could be a close friend, spouse, personal trainer, meet up group, or coworker. Communicate your goals and have people in your corner cheering you on.

• set goals that will better yourself and those around you. ex: this month, i will go on more walks with my child. this month, i will clean up my eating. this month, i will start a gratitude journal. You will find that little changes equal

huge improvements over time.• if you set “number (weight) goals,”

remember that your beauty and worth do not lie in the numbers on the scale. Healthy weight loss is slow and steady at a rate of about one pound per week. to lose just one pound per week, you must burn 3,500 calories more than you consume, which is no easy task.

• Keep in mind that fitness and health are a lifestyle - not a one-month trial. Any movement is good movement, and many times, the hardest part of exercise is just getting it started.

• nutrition is key. What goes into your mouth is just as important as the exercise you get.

We are all beautiful and have so much to offer this world. Here is to an amazing 2011!

Trim your oak Trees in JanuaryBy Patty Hoenigman, Master Gardener & Oak Wilt Specialist

Oak Wilt disease is spread mostly by underground roots grafting with each other which allows the disease to move through the vascular system from one tree to another fairly rapidly. But the other way this deadly disease is spread is by a tiny beetle, barely visible to the naked eye. it is attracted to the scent of the sap of freshly cut wood and then it contaminates the tree with the fungus of Oak Wilt disease. the month of January is the last month to prune your oak trees before we go into a period when no one should be making any cuts on their trees. Your trees will be most susceptible to Oak Wilt disease between February and June 1st. this is because these are the months when the beetle is most active.

You can protect your oak trees by painting the wound immediately after you make any cut, no matter how small. do this within ten minutes of cutting and you’ll deter the beetles from being drawn to your tree. the paint changes the scent so they won’t come to your tree. Black water based paint is best.

the small oak trees that so many of us have in our yards can likely use a good pruning after they have been established for a couple of years. Cut the branches close to the trunk, allowing for a collar to be left which helps the wound to seal most effectively. remove any branches that are crossing each other and ones that are lower than your head. You should be able to walk under a tree without branches poking you in the eye when you’re cutting your lawn. . By making selective cuts when a tree is young, you will be allowing the energy of the tree to focus on forming fewer stronger branches.

3 steps to kick-start your Career in 2011

By Amy Wolfgang, M.Ed.

it’s a new year and many of us spend this time evaluating different aspects of our lives: our health, our finances, and our career. Below are the 3 most important actions you can take to kick-start your career in 2011!

IDENTIFy yoUR CAREER GoALsBefore you can begin to make changes in your career, you need to

identify what you are looking to change. identify a few career goals that you want to achieve in 2011. sample goals include:

• develop new skills in a particular area• Make a lateral move at your company• earn a promotion• start a new job in a different industry

Once you know what you want to achieve you can begin the work to make those changes happen.

Action Item: Write down your career goals for 2011. this does not need to be a formal document, but write them down on paper or type them into a document.

GET yoUR REsUME IN sHAPEWhen was the last time you updated your resume? For some it

was years ago when they last applied to a job. For others, it was only a few months ago. regardless of when you viewed your resume last, now is the time to review it and make sure it includes all of your latest accomplishments.

Look at the bullet points on your resume and ask yourself the following questions: • do they describe your responsibilities or do they focus on

results? A good resume focuses on what you accomplished rather than the tasks that filled your day.

• is your resume attractive to read or is it too dense with information? sometimes it can be hard to edit your own work.

We feel a personal connection to what we have accomplished and we should, however, we do not need to include every accomplishment for every position we have ever held.

Action Items: review the bullet points on your resume and make sure your accomplishments jump out. then make sure your resume is easy to read. Ask others to help you decide what you should and should not keep on your resume.

DEVELoP CoNNECTIoNsFinding a new job typically takes more than just applying for a

position on a website. You need to tap into the hidden job market by making connections with other professionals. these connections can often help get your resume on top of the pile in front of the hiring manager. Additionally, knowing people at the company you are applying to can help you understand the culture better and the type of individuals that succeed at that company. developing relationships now will help you in the future, even if you are happy at your current job.

Are you already using professional social networking sites? great. Are you utilizing them effectively? Have you recently added connections to your sites? Have you joined all relevant groups on the sites?

professional social networking sites are an important tool to use in a tech-savvy town like Austin, texas. Once you are connected virtually, it’s time to start making an effort to connect with people in your network. take them to coffee or schedule a phone conversation. You want individuals to keep you in the front of their mind for when an opportunity comes up. remember, part of developing relationships is reciprocating. it’s a two way street. think about how you can help the individual you are connecting with and offer that help.

Action Items: Join professional social networking sites and “invite” those you know to join your network. then search for good contacts to have personal meetings and conversations with.

in a tight job market, you need every advantage you can get. these actions will give you a leg up and lead to a great career in 2011!

Good luck!

Changing lives for 20 years. Are you ready?

ChatterBy Rona Quejada, Newsletter Editor

Winter holiday season is synonymous to celebration with tons of food being served. Holiday parties may have filled your calendar the past weeks. For this issue’s editorial column discussion on food, i decided to solicit recommendations from our neighbors and my friends for vegetarian or vegan food establishments around Austin, just to break my carnivorous holiday binge. Here’s some vegetarian food chatter i overheard:

• Casa de Luz is a non-profit macrobiotic establishment, serving 100% organic vegan food. instead of permanent menu, a daily set menu is offered. their chefs claim that they try to avoid using foods containing gluten. What i personally like about dining in Casa de Luz is the complimentary cold lemongrass tea and hot kukicha tea.

• You must try the tofu scrambler of Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse & Café. this establishment, located in travis Heights, serves breakfast the whole day. the home made corn-bread and the Blueberry corn over cakes are other must-try items.

• You don’t have to drive too far for an ethnic vegetarian meal. Consider having an all-vegetarian lunch on a weekday at taste of ethiopia in pflugerville. it’s not an all-vegetarian restaurant so bring along your meat-lover friends and family members. Best of all, their dishes are reasonably priced and the service will chase the winter chill away.

• something i personally plan to visit soon – Ambrosia Living Foods Café. their dishes are mainly raw, vegetarian dishes. they claim that all dishes they serve are gluten-free aside from being organic and fresh. photos of their entrees are enticing but i’ll let you know next time if the flavors are as colorful as the pictures.

Comments and feedback are encouraged, please send them by email to [email protected]

Public safety Technology Program will Enhance safety

By Williamson County Commissioner Lisa Birkman

Williamson County has undertaken an overhaul of the software and hardware systems that public safety agencies use to serve citizens. the County has been working on this for over several years and issued a request for proposals, to evaluate each vendor’s offering and prices. the County was able to then find a solution to meet the most needs with the lowest total cost. After this long process, the County is now getting very close to “going live” with the new systems and processes.

this collection of projects is known as the public safety technology program, or pstp, and involves Williamson County sheriff ’s Office, the four precinct Constables, Williamson County emergency Medical services, emergency Communications, HazMat, County it, as well as more than 30 other city police departments and fire departments. the solutions that are part of this program were designed to serve each agency with their own system that is also able to share data quickly and easily.

this overhaul will improve 9-1-1 call-taking and dispatching, with a new Computer Assisted dispatch (CAd) system that enables public safety agencies to respond faster to a call for service. the new software and processes will make information gathering more accurate and timely, and will be able to help guide first responders to where they are needed.

the new software improves the records systems for law enforcement and fire departments, enabling units in the field to create reports and search for information from any location. there are also a number of features that improve crime analysis and officer safety as well as service to the citizens.

this new software and solution suite is currently utilized by the cities of round rock and georgetown, and well as hundreds of other clients across the nation. this allows the County to share critical information quickly and easily with other agencies. interfaces to the City of Austin and Cedar park dispatch systems are also planned.

in addition to new software, the hardware on public safety vehicles is being upgraded to include Automatic vehicle Location via gps. Officers and medics will be able to get directions to calls for services, view real-time call locations along with detailed maps.

this program was funded out of the 2006 Certificate of Obligations. the projects are on schedule and on budget.

the implementation of the pstp systems is underway, and training for first responders on the new dispatch and mobile data systems is scheduled to begin in spring 2011. Other systems and agencies will be added over the summer into the fall of 2011.

if you have questions on this or any other county issue, i can be reached at [email protected] or 244-8610.
