An advertisement on  thedoor  speaks  of  the  wiringbusiness run by the uncle ofthe  young  woman  who  re­mains on life support at theKing  George’s  Medical  Un­iversity in Lucknow.

It  is an eerily quiet after­noon, and only a few peopleare outside their homes. 

Across  the  road  stands  alarge  white  house  with  a

sizeable  temple  area  and  aprivate school adjoining thecompound. This belongs tothe  expelled  BJP  MLA  andrape accused Kuldeep SinghSengar. 

The sprawling compoundis a testament to Sengar’s do­minant  position  in  the  vil­lage,  located 75 km west ofLucknow.

The MLA, now at Sitapurjail,  is  charged  with  rapingthe young woman,  the cus­todial  death  of  her  fatherand  allegedly  plotting  the

car  collision  in  Rae  Bareli,which resulted in serious in­juries to the survivor and herlawyer and the death of hertwo aunts.

While  the  outside  worldoutrages  at  the  allegedcrimes, which are being  in­vestigated  by  the  CBI,  andthe  delay  in  action  against

the accused MLA by the BJP,in his maternal village he stillgarners sympathy. 

Many residents  feel he  isbeing falsely implicated due

to  political  reasons.  Thosewho expressed sympathy forthe victim did so in hushedtones  and  avoided  blamingthe  MLA  or  pronouncing  a

verdict  in  the  case.  Thosewho spoke up did so in de­fence of the jailed MLA.

Even as Governor Satya PalMalik on Saturday said hehad “no knowledge of anyconstitutional changes be­ing  made  in  Jammu  andKashmir”, there was no let­up  in  the  implementationof  fresh  security  orders,adding to the uncertainty.

“The State has no know­ledge  of  any  changes  toconstitutional provisions,”Mr.  Malik  told  a  National

Conference  (NC)  delega­tion,  led  by  its  vice­presi­dent  Omar  Abdullah,  inSrinagar. 

“A  pure  security  mea­sure is being mixed up withissues with which it has noconnection,” he asserted.

On the evacuation of pil­grims and tourists, Mr. Ma­lik said they were vulnera­ble in case of any terroristor fi��dayeen attack.

The Central Bureau ofInvestigation (CBI) onSaturday questioned expelledBJP MLA and rape accusedKuldeep Singh Sengar inSitapur jail in connectionwith the accident in whichthe rape survivor and herlawyer were critically injuredand her two aunts killed. 

The 19­year­old survivor,who is on ventilator support,remains critical as she has

developed pneumonia,doctors at the King George’sMedical University inLucknow said. Her lawyerhas been taken off�� theventilator, but is still not outof danger. 

The CBI has deputedseveral teams to speed up theinvestigation following theSupreme Court’s order thatthe probe be completed in afortnight. A PAGE 10
