• Work is currently underway on a total of 10 Home Networking related Recommendations in ITU-T SGs 5, 6, 9, 15, 16 and 17

• ITU-T SG15 have invited comment from a number of external bodies on their new draft Recommendations G.hnta - “Generic Home Network transport architecture & G.hn - “Next generation home networking transceivers”

• SG15 is also co-operating with ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1 on the harmonization of their emerging Home Network management standards with Broadband Forum (ex DSL Forum) TR-69. In addition, SG15 are contributing to the ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 PTTI on Home Networking terminology

Highlight of Current Activities (1)

3

New draft Recommendations are being developed on:• Electromagnetic environment in Home Networking• Network noise models due to Home electromagnetic environment• Common facilities for telecommunications elements inside buildings• Optical fibre cable functions for indoor applications• IP over IEEE 1394 as a function of protocol conversion for cable-based

Home Network• Generic Home Network Architecture• Next generation Home Networking Transceivers• Generic Home Network Architecture with support for multimedia services• Architecture and functional requirements for Home Network supporting

IPTV• Authorization framework for Home Network

4

Strategic Direction

• ITU-T continues to develop a number of Recommendations in the Home Networking area

• The JCA-HN continues to encourage co-operation with other Home Networking bodies

Page 5: Home Networking in ITU-T

5

Challenges

• With the ever growing number of computers, audio/video devices and home automation products etc. deployed in the home environment, Home Networking is becoming increasingly important. The main challenge is how to bring together the many standards bodies working on Home Networking in order to develop global standards in this area which would bring benefits to manufacturers, Network Operators and consumers alike

• Network Provider: Responsibility ends at UNICustomer: Expect QoS at service end point (STB)-> Gap between formal responsibility and customer’s expectation

Page 6: Home Networking in ITU-T

6

Next Steps/Actions

• Continue to encourage members to contribute to Home Networking studies in the ITU-T

• Continue to encourage co-operation with other Home Networking bodies
