Activities & AthleticsNumerous extracurricular and athletic activities are available to all students. Our experience has shown that students with extracurricular involvement often are more satisfied and successful in school. All students are enthusiastically invited to try out for a sport or join a club. You may contact our activities or athletics directors for additional information.

Fees will be charged to participants in all activities and athletics for which a sponsor or coach is paid a stipend. Tax credit may be used to pay activity fees if requested during the initial payment of the activity fee.

Co-curricular EligibilityIn order to participate in interscholastic competition or performance in any extracurricular activity and sport, students are reminded that they must maintain several standards of eligibility. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of five credit-bearing classes, and they must be passing all those classes with a grade of at least a “D” or higher. (Students enrolled in six classes must be passing all six classes.) Seniors who are meeting all requirements for graduation must be enrolled in and passing a minimum of four classes. (If seniors are registered for more than four classes, they must be passing all of those classes.) Please remember that seminary is not a credited class and cannot be counted as part of these minimum requirements.

InsuranceAll students participating in school-organized activities must be insured. School insurance (for accident or injury during school or school-related activities) is available to all students who do not have their own family coverage.

Extended Learning OpportunitiesThe Tempe Union High School District Extended Learning Program provides all TUHSD students the opportunity to take courses beyond the school day to fruther their course of study and/or recover credits.

• Summer Education Academy • Saturday School• Evening School • Online Learning/MDLP

For information about these programs, visit www.tempeunion.org > Programs.

GraduationLate GraduationStudents who are unable to graduate in May of their senior year or by the end of the following summer are required to meet the graduation requirements of the following class. From time to time, those requirements change. Consequently, late graduates may find it necessary to take additional courses in order to earn a diploma.

Early GraduationA student intending to graduate in three years or less than four years must first notify the Academics Office by October 1st of the year in which s/he plans to graduate.

Students are encouraged to apply in the spring of their second year, so that the sixth semester rank will include them. The transcript and schedule of classes will be evaluated to determine whether the student can graduate, according to existing requirements and policies.

If graduation is possible, the student will be reclassified as a “senior” student. The student ID number will not be changed. This reclassification will guarantee the student’s inclusion in the final GPA calculation and class ranking for the graduating class and will allow the student to be included in all graduation activities at the end of his/her third year.

Graduation Credit Requirements23 credits are required to obtain a high school diploma.

Registration & SchedulingScheduling ConsiderationsFor current MP students registration for the following school year takes place in January in English class. For incoming eighth graders, registration occurs on their home campuses also during January. For all new students, registration packets are available in the Mountain Pointe Academics Office during the second semester and throughout the summer.

Some students fail to register on time. To plan for adequate numbers of class sections, we will select classes for these students. Classes that meet current graduation requirements are selected first, then additional classes are chosen based on the student’s interests suggested by previous electives taken. Students will not be allowed to change their course selections later.

page 6

Accurate Course SelectionEach year our classes for the new school year fill up quickly. Teachers are hired for the next school year based on the courses that students sign up for in January/February. Therefore, there are very few seats in classes available for changes once our staffing is complete. It is absolutely essential for you to choose your classes very carefully.

Registration for all math, science, and English classes and for all honors or corrective classes requires your current teachers’ signatures as evidence of their approval.

Exercise particular caution in the selection of your electives. Some electives require teacher signature to ensure correct placement. Read course descriptions and talk to instructors to get as much information about your elective options before you register. Schedules will NOT be changed because you “didn’t know the class was going to be like this.”

Selecting Alternate CoursesOn the scheduling worksheet list two alternatives in case one of your first requests is not available. The Assistant Principal, Academics will refer to these alternatives when conflicts occur or if classes do not make to aid in assigning courses. If you do not list alternates, classes will be selected for you. You will not be able to make a change once school begins.

Lunch Period AssignmentsAlong with your classes, lunches are scheduled purely on a random basis by the computer. So that class sizes remain balanced, we will not change lunch periods unless the request is supported by a doctor’s note (M.D. or D.O.) detailing the medical reasons for a student to have lunch at a particular time. Please understand that no exceptions can be made to this policy.

Teachers’ Assistants (T.A.)Students interested in being an T.A. must complete an application, get it signed by the appropriate teacher, and submit it with the scheduling worksheet during the registration process. List it as a request on your registration form, but also indicate an alternative class in case you are not selected as a T.A. Once the school year starts, T.A. positions will not be available.

Requests for Change in TeachersBecause of the random computer scheduling process, students do not have the option of requesting a particular teacher. Once schedules are established, a teacher change will be considered only if the student has taken a class with that teacher in the past and was not successful in his or her class. Those changes must be made before the school year begins. If you find that you are having difficulty with one of your teachers, you are advised to do the following:

1) Meet with the teacher to discuss your concerns. Include your parent(s) or guardian(s). Most conflicts are resolved once they are openly discussed in this type of conference;

2) If you don’t feel the problem has been remedied, contact the department chair to request a conference with you, the teacher and chair to develop a plan for your success in the class. The Department Chair then may meet with the Assistant Principal, Academics to discuss further action.

page 7

Schedule Change ProceduresOnce you have turned in your schedule requests, changes will be made ONLY under the following circumstances:

• If you pass a scheduled class during summer school • If you fail a class and need to recover a credit • If you are missing a required class

• If a clerical or computer input error is made in assigning your classes (We retain your registration form so that we can verify any errors.)

If your request for a schedule change meets one of the stated criteria, you must complete a Schedule Change Request form available in the Guidance Office.

Sometimes students will find that a year-long class is scheduled for one period during first semester and another period during second semester. When we find that we have no other option than to split year-long classes, we do our best to make certain that students stay with the same instructor for both semesters.

It is very important for students to remember that schedules are subject to change during the first weeks of the semester. Because summer registration is so unpredictable, new sections may be added to the master schedule, and students may have to be re-scheduled to balance class sizes. We appreciate students’ patience and flexibility during this process.

Dropping Classes - PLEASE NOTEDropping classes when the workload or academic challenge increases is a commonly taken escape route for students. We expect that you will thoroughly discuss your interest in dropping a class with your parents or guardians and your teacher, keeping in mind the possible consequences for your graduation, career preparation, or college admission. More often than not, it is to your educational advantage to stay in the class by seeking additional teacher assistance, arranging for a tutor, committing to more study time, and/or reducing outside-of-school obligations such as part-time employment.

If changes are made after the first 10 days of school, no new classes can be added to your schedule.

If you drop a class after the tenth week of each semester, classes will be dropped with an “F” on your transcript.

Changing from an honors or AP class to a regular level class may be done only at the end of the quarter or semester and is reserved for students who have received a grade of “F” on their report card. The change requires both teacher and department chair recommendation and is dependent on space being available in the regular level class. Requesting a change during the summer, before school starts, will only be considered if there is space available in the regular level class. Once a student attends class, changes will only be made under the conditions above.

Students who register for multi-credit block classes (EVIT, Advanced Marketing, Business Internship) may not withdraw from these programs after the 10th day as each of these are scheduled for a three-period block. Withdrawal from such a program would leave a student with fewer than the required number of scheduled courses.

Gifted & Honors ProgramPride’s Peak Gifted ProgramStudents who score in the 97th, 98th, or 99th percentile on the district Gifted placement exam or by other evidence of gifted performance (other aptitude or intelligence exams or equivalent) may participate in the Pride’s Peak Gifted program. For each student, an initial Individualized Learning Plan is written during spring of 8th grade to plan for a challenging high school experience. Students will receive a customized four year plan based on post-secondary goals, as well as additional academic support, college preparation, enrichment opportunities, and counseling services for the next four years. Students have the opportunity to engage in rigorous coursework including Advanced Studies and Honors Professional Internship. Also a wide range of Honors, Dual Credit classes, and Advanced Placement (AP) classes are offered.

For further information about gifted curriculum and academic enrichment opportunities both in and out of school, contact the Campus Gifted Coordinator or Counselor.

Honors ProgramAre you willing to work hard? Are you committed to your academic success? Did you take advanced courses in middle school? Are you willing to challenge yourself? If you answered yes to these questions then you should take an honors class in high school!

Honors courses are:

• Rigorous: higher level of thinking, complexity of reading and writing

• Higher work volume: more reading, longer/more frequent writing

• Time intensive: may require more time to complete lengthier, more complex assignments

• Quicker paced: may go quicker, may do more work in the same amount of time

Honors classes prepare you for college and university coursework. We encourage all students to challenge themselves and take an honors level class in a subject they enjoy, are passionate about or excel in!

Movement into an honors course after the first nine weeks occurs if a student has a teacher recommendation using the Probationary Honors Form, has department chair approval, and if space is available in the requested class.

Movement out of an honors class will only occur if a student is facing an extreme academic challenge in the class (Ds and Fs only), if the honors teacher and department chair agree, and if space is available in another non-honors class. A single class change may affect a student’s entire schedule.

Most honors English and Math courses require summer projects to complete prior to the start of the school year. Visit www.mphspride.com and look at both the English and math webpages for more information.

For more information see your high school counselor.

page 10

Advanced Placement (AP) Advanced placement classes, otherwise known as AP, offer students an opportunity to pursue college-level classes while still in high school. AP courses give students access to rigorous col-lege-level work, but with the support of high school teachers and peers. Students learn time management and study skills, as well as problem-solving capabilities, advanced research skills, and analytical skills needed for college and career success. A decision to take an AP course shows college admission officers a willingness to take on the academic challenge of college-level course work and expectations.

AP exams are given once a year in May and a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam can typically earn students college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college. Currently more than 90 percent of colleges and universities across the country offer college credit, ad-vanced placement, or both, for qualifying AP Exam scores. AP Courses receive weighted rank points. For more information, visit www.collegeboard.org.

Alternate Diplomas Offered In addition to our regular diploma, Mountain Pointe has two honors-related diploma distinctions. The Honors Diploma and Diploma of Distinction will each be recognized by a special seal affixed to the Mountain Pointe diploma students receive at graduation.

• Honors Diploma – meets the admission requirements for all in-state schools. Requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA, taking 16 core classes; a minimum of 3 must be designated as AP, Honors, and/or Rio Salado endorsed.

• Diploma of Distinction – Requires students to maintain at least a 3.84 GPA, taking 18 core classes, 8 of which must be AP, Honors and/or Rio Salado endorsed. (Meets minimum requirements for enrollment into ASU’s Barrett, the Honors College.)

Grade Point Average & Class RankThe Grade Point Average (GPA) and Class Rank will be computed by placing the following point values on letter grades.

GPA Points Numeric Regular/Honors Classes A = 90 - 100% A = 4 points B = 80 - 89% B = 3 points C = 70 - 79% C = 2 points D = 60 - 69% D = 1 point F = Below - 59% F = 0 points

Rank Points Rank Points *Honors Classes (Weighted) Regular Classes A = 5 points A = 4 points B = 4 points B = 3 points C = 3 points C = 2 points D = 1 point D = 1 point F = 0 points F = 0 points

Grade Point Average: Add GPA points and divide by number of total semester classes completed (the maximum GPA is 4.0).

Class Rank: Class Rank is determined by adding all class rank points earned that are not over the limit. The student with the highest total is ranked first.

Restrictions: • Grades awarded for administrative type credit awarded for non-class service will not be

computed in the GPA or Class Rank. • Only credits received in classes taken in high school, summer school, night school,

concurrent enrollment, and online courses will be used for class ranking purposes. • A maximum number of credits will be used each semester in determining rank.

Semester Credit Limit Semester Credit Limit 1 3.0 5 15.0 2 6.0 6 18.0 3 9.0 7 21.0 4 12.0 8 24.0

• If a student exceeds the credit limit for a given semester, rank points accumulated in courses will be used in the following order:

Core courses earning the most class rank points will be used until the credit limit is reached.

If the number of core courses does not exceed the credit limit, all core courses will be used.

Non-core courses earning the most class rank points will be used until the credit limit is reached.

Core courses are designated by + on transcript.

• Weighted rank points will be given to those courses identified in the Course Description Booklet. Weighted rank points will not be given for courses from other schools for which we do not give weighted rank points. The transferring school and the receiving school must both have awarded weighted grades/rank points for a particular course.

Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO)CTSOs are organizations that provide CTE Students with leadership, collaboration, and real-world experiences. These organizations develop academic success through applied academics, promote choice and identification of career options and foster interpersonal skills in teamwork, communica-tions, human relations, and social interactions. They also encourage excellence in scholarship, build character, promote citizenship, volunteerism and patriotism, endorse cooperation and cooperative attitudes among all people, and provide opportunities for local, state, national, and international travel through internships, camps, and leadership conferences.

Industry CertificationAs per state statue, CTE programs are required to prepare students for industry certifications. An industry certification is a credential recognized by business and industry at the local, state or national level. Students in their last year of a CTE program will take the industry certification test for that program.

CTE RecognitionStudents who complete a program and pass the related end-of-program assessment will be recognized. Visual & PerformingArts AcademyMissionIt is the mission of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts to offer to its students a rigorous and meaningful path for those who have an interest in the arts. Through a carefully selected course of study, students gain the knowledge to best prepare them for post-secondary advanced studies or for a more streamlined method to enter arts related occupations.

Discipline StrandsThe Academy is comprised of six unique discipline strands to facilitate a dedication to lifelong learning. These include: • Dance • Instrumental Music: Band, Orchestra • Visual Art• Graphics & Multimedia • Theatre Arts • Vocal Music: Choir

Aesthetic perspective, creative expression, culture and history, analysis and criticism are the unifying elements within each discipline. By the same token, students will select the area of discipline that appeals to them and as they continue through the program burgeoning skills will become self-evident. Through this journey of self-discovery, students will apply real-life problem-solving skills to the cross-curricular courses they encounter. It is through this vision we establish purpose, instill pride and empower performance in the arts.

World Languages

MissionAs globalization, mobility and communication bring the world closer together, it is becoming more urgent for people to be competent in other languages. The mission of the Mountain Pointe World Language Department is to increase global understanding and to prepare students to live work and be successful in an increasingly multi-cultural world. In addition, studies show that students who study another language show increased academic achievement. We are committed to using a communicative approach to make learning a language both fun and meaningful so that students feel that they can actually use the language they are studying in real life.

Program Highlights• Upper-level languages courses are considered to be rigorous and require higher- level thinking skills. They are looked well upon when applying to universities and for scholarships. We encourage everyone to take upper-level courses.

• Being familiar with another language and culture can be advantageous when applying for jobs

• Students need a minimum of 2 consecutive years of world languages in order to apply to a 4 year college, more competitive programs require up to 4 years.

• Starting at level 3, students can earn 18 Rio Salado credits which in some universities can put you well on your way to a Spanish or French minor.

• Students can advance to 5th year in both French and Spanish.

• Students who go on to 4th year language studies and have the requisite GPA will be invited to join the MPHS Language Honor Society.

• Students who have had exposure to Spanish at home can sign up for our Heritage Speaker 1-2 course to expand their written and spoken Spanish language skills. This class feeds into Spanish 5-6 or 7-8 per teacher recommendation.
