5th Grade Newsletter for Dec. 2-6

❖ Keep working hard toward your goals! Only 11 ½ more days of school until break!

❖ Spelling Test this Friday!❖ Christmas Program is on Monday, December 16th ❖ Christmas break begins with noon dismissal on Wednesday, December 18th.

School will resume on Monday, January 6th.

This week, we are beginning a poetry unit. We will discuss structure, imagery, and figurative language. We will be analyzing long poems, along with shorter ones. We will also be creating different types of poetry on our own.

Topic 7: Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. We will focus on calculating estimates of sums and differences, then move forward to finding common denominators to help us find sums and differences. We will also explore how to reduce, or simplify fractions.

Unit 8: This week’s focus will be the spelling of Unit 8 words. Spelling Test on Friday! Students need to be studying the spellings/word patterns of these words: 1)alternate, 2)demolish, 3) energetic, 4)enforce, 5)feat, 6) hearty, 7) mature, 8) observant, 9) primary, 10) resign, 11) strive, and 12) verdict Bonus: passageway and atmosphere

We are working on the 12 Days of Christmas review. We will work on homophones, parts of speech, proofreading, punctuation, and tenses.

We will begin looking at what is matter, along with mixtures and solutions. We will learn how to separate mixtures and solutions with a hands-on activity.

Chapter 10: A New Nation -- we will learn about the beginnings of our nation’s new government. What successes did it have? Failures? We will learn how our Founding Fathers laid the foundation for our nation today. Quiz Next Week!
