Thompson 620 Quick Links CPPA Website Job Bulletin News & Updates Generous Gift to Support Student Scholarships and Internships The Center for Public Policy and Administration (CPPA) is pleased to announce a generous donation from Richard Barnard (BS '76, MPA '86) for support of students pursuing master's degrees in public policy. This donation will help fund scholarships and summer internships over the next two years and lead to the establishment of the Barnard Family Fund, a permanent endowment that will eventually provide annual support for students pursuing careers in public policy. "Mr. Barnard is an advocate for social justice, a cause shared by so many of our students at CPPA," says Kathryn McDermott, acting CPPA director. "This donation will allow a greater number of them to pursue that passion." Read more. Faculty Colloquium Series Begins Jan. 27, at New Time To better accommodate the campus class schedule, the CPPA Faculty Colloquium talks will now meet from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. The series kicks off next Monday, Jan. 27., with Amherst College Political Science Professor Javier Corrales, who will talk about the unlikely relationship between the United States and Brazil. On Monday, Feb. 3, Associate Professor Mari Castañeda (communication) will address policies in the Academy that affect mothers and motherhood. Hampshire College's Megan Briggs Lyster will speak about using social entrepreneurship to address society's wicked problems on Monday, March 3. And Professor Donald TomaskovicDevey (sociology) will conclude the series on Monday, April 7, with a talk about equal employment opportunities in the U.S. All talks are in Thompson 620; all are welcome. January Social Enterprise Course Advances Five College Curriculum Bridging Project As part of the Five College Curriculum Bridging Project, Hampshire College's Megan Briggs Lyster taught a January session course titled Social Action through Social Enterprise. Students in the course at Amherst College not only learned about the theory behind and history of social enterprise; they also consulted directly with two local social enterprises and developed marketing and strategic plans for the companies. The Curriculum Bridging Project offers Five College faculty opportunities to explore curricular and pedagogical innovations that bridge undergraduate and professional education in the areas of public policy, organizational leadership and innovation for social change. Last month, Orlando Cordero (MPPA '15) helpedestablish Hope for Kids, a nonprofit that works tomeet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of at­risk youth in Springfield, Mass. Cordero now sits onthe organization's board of directors and says hedraws often on the content that Associate ProfessorBrenda Bushouse presented last semester in herNonprofit Program Management course. Students Make ProfessionalContacts in D.C. Fourteen CPPA students spent last weekmeeting with representatives fromgovernment agencies and visitingorganizations during a professionaldevelopment trip to Washington, D.C. Thegroup met with Vanessa Megaw(MPPA/MBA '13) and Laura Molyneaux(MPP '13) at the Consumer FinancialProtection Bureau; and with Maggie Carson(MPA '85), John Ake (MPPA/MBA '09) andMichael Qualter (MPA '03) at the U.S.Department of Labor. Students also visited the Urban Institute; Center forCivilians in Conflict; Center for American Progress; the U.S. Department ofthe Interior; the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management; the CongressionalBudget Office; and NASA. Thank you to all the alumni who met with thegroup and with individual students!

Ash's Austerity Measures Report Repeatedly Cited Among2013's Most Influential Works

Several prominent national and internationalpublications named Professor Michael Ash(economics and public policy), Professor RobertPollin and doctoral candidate Thomas Herndon (botheconomics), on year­end lists of important thinkersand change­makers of 2013. The trio first made newsin April, when they published a paper revealingsignificant spreadsheet and methodological errors inthe academic study widely used to defend economicausterity policies. The UMass economists received

year­end nods from, among others, Foreign Policy; the Washington Post;and The Atlantic.

Bushouse to Lead New Five College Faculty SeminarAssociate Professor Brenda Bushouse will lead theFive College Curriculum Bridging Project facultyseminar that begins next week. Through the seminar,Five College faculty will develop or substantiallyrevise a course so that the content actively engageswith the external environment and better preparesstudents for professional education or careers.Bushouse directs the Curriculum Bridging Project,which is helping to shape the next generation of socialchange leaders by connecting undergraduate liberalarts education with graduate professional programs throughout the FiveColleges.

Schweik Helps Start Discussion about Local MakerspaceAssociate Professor Charles Schweik(environmental conservation and publicpolicy) helped organize a three­dayworkshop last week where area youth andadults learned to program an Arduino, asimple computer board built with open­source hardware. The workshop was heldat Amherst Media and included aninformation session about establishing amakerspace, or community workshopopen to the public, that would have high­

Last June, John Ake (MPPA/MBA '09) married Erin Jehn, a former disabilityrights attorney and current special education teacher. Congratulations! Anna Fung­Morley (MPPA '13) is a performance management analyst atthe Edward J. Collins Center for Public Management at the University ofMassachusetts Boston. In this role, she helps municipalities use data toimprove performance and inform policymaking. Laura Molyneaux (MPP '13) is now a finance and policy analyst at theConsumer Financial Protection Bureau. She works on internal controls withthe travel team in the office of the chief financial officer. Nick Russo (MPP '13) was recently promoted to policy program associateat the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute. He researchestopics related to broadband infrastructure and telecommunications, thenprovides analysis of broadband policy for use at the federal, state and locallevels. Ashley Vieira (MPP '13) is coordinating two separate health care projects atBoston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. At the hospital,Vieira is project coordinator for an international medical challenge to find thebest solution to the analysis, interpretation and reporting of genomic data. Inaddition, she is helping to establish Harvard's new Coordinating Center forthe Undiagnosed Diseases Network, funded through a grant from theNational Institutes of Health.
