s the days begin to length
and we all begin to hold
out hope that the seasons
last snowall is behind us
thoughts turn to spring
and the ability to actually enjoy the
outdoors again. In Oak Park, two lo
amilies dont have to wait or Moth
Nature to turn up the heat to take ad
vantage o the outdoors. These ami
took matters into their own hands a
added enclosed porches or garden
rooms onto their homes, bringing
outdoor vistas year-round and provi
ing an ideal spot to relax and entert
when the weather is warm.
On Harvey Avenue, local interiordesigner Becky Broman and her
husband John had been dreaming o
opening up their home to their back
yard with an enclosed porch since th
bought their armhouse 13 years ago
The couple completely overhauled t
home beore moving in, but settled i
beore tackling their outdoor room.
According to Becky, the addition
was a long time coming. Weve bee
dreaming about this or years, and
once we did it, it really fnished the
back o the house. We knew exactlywhat we wanted out here. We wante
lounge seating and dining space wit
wraparound views o the yard.
Becky, who has 33 years experienc
in design and had worked or archit
or several years beore opening her
dependent frm, was able to concept
alize the space. She didnt have to lo

too ar or building expertise.
Local architect Tom Bair
lives just a ew blocks rom
the Bromans, as does general
contractor John Peterson, and
their visions o the projectmeshed perectly.
The resulting enclosed back
porch opens o the homes
amily room with two sets o
French doors, allowing light
to fll the interior. A railing
system o copper stiles, a
beadboard ceiling with white
beams and our skylights,
bring a homey, outdoor
style that complements the
100-year-old house.
An outdoor sectional soa
with slip-covered cushions
and an industrial table base
topped with Corian are practi-
cal touches that bring modern
style into the room. Tomato-
red accents in the storm door
and pillows add cheer even
in the depths o winter and
coordinate with red accents
throughout the homes inte-
rior. Beckys design touches
are apparent in the orm o
the reed sconce covers and
decorative accents like her
Thai blessing swans andmetal Haitian birds.
Becky says that her hus-
band John was the real driv-
ing orce behind the addition.
He does all the maintenance
out here, and it is very simple
with the system that Tom Bair
and John Peterson created,
she says. The storm windows
can be removed rom the
inside, so we dont need to get
on a ladder to remove them
seasonally, and the screens
store neatly underneath the
porch in a storage area Peter-
son planned or us.
The porch is everything
the Bromans hoped or and
more, thanks in part to the
cratsmanship o their proes-
sional neighbors. According
to Becky, [T]heres nothing
better than working with good
people, and we really had that
on this project. With these
older houses, you want any
work to eel as i it belongs to
the house, and I eel like thisreally does.
The diagonal wall trick
Mena and David Bou-
langer had a similar desire
to open up their living space
to the outdoors when they
added a garden room to their
1892-built home several years
ago. Their house had an older
porch with a second story
deck above it, and they aced
some unique challenges in
their eort to create an all-
season enclosed porch.
David notes that they
thought or some time about
how to approach the project.
Wed been thinking about
doing this or 15 years, but we
couldnt fgure out a way to do
it and still be able to eat out-

side while protecting our a-
vorite paper-white birch tree.
One side o our home is onlyone oot rom the property
line, so it was very dicult to
plan the project.
The Boulangers addressed
one aspect o the problem
by using a diagonal wall on
one side o the room. They
also were able to top the new
150-square oot room with
a deck, so that the existing
doors on the second foor
could still be used.
Mena notes that not only
was opening up their space
to the backyard important,
but so was incorporating the
garden room into the rest o
the interior.
The garden room opens
into our kitchen, so we had to
re-plan our kitchen. We wanted
to be as green as possible, so we
kept our cabinets and coun-
tertops rom the 1950s and ju
recongured them, she sayWe put in a shel around th
walls o the garden room o
my plants so that we could h
blooming year-round. David
built window boxes to hang
the outside o the new wind
so that we would have views
colorul fowers in the sum-
mertime.
The new, triple-paned
windows with built-in blin
between the panes are prac
cal in all seasons, providin
protection rom the elemen
in the winter, and allowing
Boulangers to block the su
during the hottest part o t
day in the summer. A vent-
ree replace and plenty o
space or dining has made
room the center o their ho
in all seasons. n

When Oak Park Place
opened its doors in
2009 it promised to
bring a new kind o
residential experi-
ence to Oak Park. Eco-riendly
design and materials as well as a
central, walk-to-everything location
made the new construction appeal-
ing to a wide range o potential
residents rom young proessionals
to students to retirees. The modern
mid-rise building at Harlem Avenue
and Lake Street was built around
the concept o green living, but the
apartments themselves arent the
only things to benet rom such
design concepts.
High above the bustle o down-
town Oak Park, the buildings deck
space expands on the interior green
design, oering residents a chance
to get away rom it all. Tracy Vegler,
general manager o Oak Park Place,
says that the deck, built on top o
Trader Joes market on the seventh
foor o the building, was designed to
be as eco-riendly as possible.
All o the plants are sel-irrigat-
ing and the native grasses and other
plants require little, i any upkeep,
she says.
Vegler notes that besides oering a
gentle environmental eect, the deck
space truly infuences the buildings
community eeling.
We have tables and chairs out
here and community grills. Come
spring and summer, we have a ton
o community activities and people
really love hanging out up here, she
says. Even in the winter months,
residents enjoy the outdoor land-
scape o the deck through the walls
o windows o our indoor recreationroom, and the grills are used year-
round.
Resident Jen Kauman has lived in
the building or a year and cant say
enough good things about the deck
and its positive eect on resident
relationships.

Our reputation began generations agoIn 1906, 30-year-old Samuel M. Yonan arrived in Chicago from Persia.
All he brought with him was his family, several carpets and the American
dream. Shortly thereafter, he opened the rst Yonan Carpets at 1127 North
State Street in Chicago, where he sold and cleaned Oriental rugs.
His motto was to provide the best value by offering excellent products
and services at a fair price.
The most
trusted name in
