`  A count of all sheltered and unsheltered homeless

people in the United States.

` The unsheltered count is mandated every other

year by HUD and 2011 is one of those years.` WV conducts the sheltered and unsheltered PIT

annually.

` Vital to assessing the level of need for homeless

services and ³painting a picture´ of homelessnessin the Balance of State.

`  All forms and methods are being updated this

year. This is a required year for the unsheltered

count.

` Emphasis this year is on regional ³groups´ in the

BoS CoC who have several potential volunteers

and a plan for counting the Unsheltered

Homeless. We need information on local groupsand who the ³point people´ are so we can make

contact.

` The Sheltered Homeless survey count will be

compared against HMIS count for the same time

period.

` This PIT is still under the original McKinney

Definition of homelessness, but we are mindful of

the HEARTH Act and are collecting some

additional information about housing instability.

` Changes: Families can be measured as

chronically homeless.

` Greater emphasis on homeless veterans. We will

be separating US Military, activated nationalguard, and activated reserves.

` Greater emphasis on unaccompanied youth

(unaccompanied youth and their minor children).

`  A report from each Continuum that is sent to

Congress annually, and constitutes a national

estimate of the extent and nature of

homelessness.

` Depends on accurate HMIS entry and Housing

Inventory information.

` Site Data: This was addressed some months ago,

but it¶s essential that everyone enter their site data

in HMIS correctly.

` No exit dates for clients: this affects anything we

need to pull in terms of time and when clients

used certain kinds of beds

Page 14: Homeless Management Information Services and Homeless Programs

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/homeless-management-information-services-and-homeless-programs 14/17

` Unit and Bed counts: It appears that many of the

bed counts are incorrect in light of the different

kinds of data we are pulling for specific types of

clients (Transitional Families, Emergency Shelter Singles, etc.). The HMIS numbers are either lower

or higher than the respective bed counts which

means users aren¶t putting in exit dates (for the

higher) or bed information is incorrect (for thelower).

` Disability Information: It¶s important to fill out all

the accompanying information for disability status,

particularly if a disability is of an extended

duration.

` Disability and Substance Abuse Info: Are the

Condition, Verification, and Attach options

needed?

` Substance Abuse: The specific information for

type of substance abuse should be entered for all

clients.

` Veterans Status: It¶s important for users to enter

the Veterans Status of clients, as there is a great

emphasis on tracking this data for HUD purposes,

and it¶s an essential component of the AHAR.
