Home owner’s Associations:
Hero villain?
or
What is a HOA?A home owner’s association asks
members to pay $200-$400 in dues
each month and follow rules.
In return, the HOA provides certain amenities, like community pools or trash removal.
What are the rules? Each HoA has different Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, or CC&R’s. Some determine seemingly personal rules, like what window coverings a homeowner can purchase. Others focus on maintaining property values.
What are the perks?Once again, all HOA’s are different. Some
provide pools, walking trails and yard work for free. It just depends on what the HOA can afford to give to the homeowners.
do you have to
follow the rules?If the
homeowner doesn’t pay his or
her dues, then the HOA can place a lien on the property (they claim ownership) until the
fees are paid or the rules are
followed.
Heros? or Villians?
It depends on the homeowner! If the homeowner wants the perks and can follow the rules, HOA’s are perfect! If the homeowner wants more freedom, a HOA might be a burden. Make sure you know what you’re moving into!
