ORGANIZED CONFUSION

Well now that we've finally endured our first snowstorm of the season, we can finally get back to gearing up for more important things. I know I have said it before, and I'll probably say it

again, but we have a very busy couple of months ahead of us and you do not want to miss anything. Read on and find out what will be happening here at the FCTV World Headquarters . . .

Look on our website for a new listing of classes to be held between now and the middle of May. We are offering some specialty classes this time around, as well as our usual standard offerings. As always, we're holding Orientation, Basic Studio, Basic Field, Advanced Field and Basic Non-linear Editing classes as well as;

REMOTE STREAMING LAPTOP WORKSHOP - Learn how to use our laptop computers which allow for wireless camera operation during multi-camera field shoots.

Nnovia PORTABLE HARD DISK RECORDER WORSKHOP - This portable hard disk recorder is the easiest way to “shoot for the edit”. Tape your production to hard disk then download to our non-linear editing computers.

ONE SESSION STUDIO LIGHTING CLASS - Need a studio lighting refresher? Come on by.

STUDIO CAMERA OPERATOR CLASS - Want to learn to run a studio camera? We'll teach you everything you need to know in this two-hour class.

ADVANCED AUDIO WORKSHOP - If you think the large blue audio mixer in Control Room A is scary, than this workshop is a necessity. Learn the details and components behind sound in television. I can't believe it either, but town meeting is once again right around the corner. Beginning on Monday night April 3rd, Falmouth Town Meeting will commence at the Lawrence School. Over the coming weeks, we'll be contacting you to volunteer during this extremely important and informative meeting. Last fall, we cablecast over two nights with

close to eight hours of town meeting coverage but we never would have been able to do it without the help of our dedicated volunteers. So thank you for all of your help in the past and, in advance, for your help next month. More details to follow but we are in the preliminary stages of planning election coverage in the middle of May. Rather than just results to be posted on the community bulletin board, we're looking to do a full-scale production of election information, interviews, and immediate results - as well as the results to play overnight on the bulletin board. If you're interested in helping out on this exciting and different production, contact me and I'll give you all the details. Well, that will do it for me. Please remember that we are here to help you through the production proc-ess. If you have an idea but need production help, we'll find other members to help you. It's a cycle of helping around here and I am sure that everyone can help everyone else out. If all else fails, you all know that my door is always open.

- David Finer -

FOLDERS & STUFFERS THANK YOU

A very BIG THANK YOU goes out to Chuck & Caroline Bacon, Ursula Boyce, Debbie McIntosh & Eileen Rice for their help with folding and stuffing the Town Meeting Brochures. I had to turn volunteers away because we finished in ONE DAY!

If you’d like to know how you can help out on the next mailing, or just to add your name to the volunteer list, call Victoria at 508-457-0800.

March 2006 - Page 7

PRODUCER SPOTLIGHT By Yang Conley I’ve been associated with FCTV for a number of years now. Originally, I joined FCTV through my interest in politics and current affairs, I thought I would like to do a show highlighting current issues. I enjoyed the training given by Russ Hannagan and like many others new to community television, my first task was doing camera. My first regular camera stint was on Totally Trivia. The hosts at that time were Joe Griffin and Ahmed Mustafa, Susan Robertson usually directed, and it was fun. I soon graduated to producing my own live in-studio show, Report From Beacon Hill, sponsored by the Falmouth Democratic Town Committee. I discovered that producing a show is a lot of work. For one hour on camera there are at least two hours of preparation. Arranging for guests, getting a crew together (with a lot of help from staff along the way), and arranging the set, all take time. Then when it’s over, it’s clean-up time. As Debby Rogers says, leave the studio as you found it. If a show is taped, in addition to the other tasks, then there is editing! Until now I have been totally dependent on someone else helping and actually doing the major part of the editing. Obviously, I need to take an editing class. Although I had a fantasy of doing a monthly issues show, the reality was that given the other activities I was involved in, three shows in a year seemed the most reasonable to strive for. I had usually done an annual January show with State Representatives, Eric Turkington and Matt Patrick as featured guests, reviewing the past year on Beacon Hill and what is on the table for the coming year. I am very proud of a project I did in 2004 with Levi Adams, a colleague from the Democratic Town Committee, called Core Values of the Democratic Party. We had a lot of help on that project from Jason Crow and Fred Gitlitz who pitched in as artistic editor. Levi and I had the pleasure of Interviewing Congressmen Barney Frank, Bill

Delahunt and Ed Markey as well as our own State Reps Eric and Matt. The project was a lot of work, a lot of fun and a result we were very proud of. I’ve enjoyed doing camera and directing the Falmouth Band Concerts on occasion, as well as the League of Women Voters Candidate nights and with help from Kevin Lynch and Dave Shephard I produced an audience participation show on the possible Library Renovation in 2003. Playing Mrs. Santa Claus for several years was great fun. Most recently I produced a Heath Care Forum, which is still being shown on FCTV. Kevin Lynch worked with me filming and editing this project. I hope to work with a team on a show following the progress of the upcoming Library Renovation, (providing it is approved by Town Meeting). Several people have expressed an interest in working on this project. I hope any reader who would enjoy being part of the project will let me know. The projects I have taken part in at FCTV have required teamwork. I have found that there is always someone who will give generously of their time to help out and the staff are always willing to help as well. We are most fortunate in having a staff at FCTV who are talented, able, and most patient and supportive of the amateur producer. Belonging to FCTV has offered me the opportunity to participate in lots of activities going on in town and has been a most rewarding experience. Whether producing my own show or volunteering to help others with their projects, it is a labor of love and most satisfying. And I’ve met some very interesting people along the way. I recently had a shoulder replacement which has kept me a stay-at-home since November. I am looking forward to coming back to FCTV in the spring when I plan on producing an Educational Forum.
