Nazareth Housing is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a partner in United Way of New York City’s (UWNYC) MoneyUP Initia-tive! Working with the Financial Clinic, Nazareth housing will provide Earned Income Tax Credit screening, tax filing and finan-cial counseling for 1100 people in the coming tax filing season. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to partner with the
MoneyUP initiative and further the financial literacy and economic support we offer to lower income families, seniors and those with limited resources” said Executive Director, Michael Callaghan. “Given the current financial circumstances facing many New York households, we know that this is an invaluable opportunity for families to access free, high quality services.” Through this grant, Nazareth Housing will offer services for 1100 tax filers through April 15 and financial counseling through December 2009. For more infor-mation contact Matt Fabricant, Coordinator for Mission and Development, who is han-dling the marketing for the initiative. Matt can be reached at 212-777-1010 ext. 16 or [email protected]. Referrals are welcome for screening and for filing ap-pointments.

More than a half a million people lost their jobs in the last two months. Announcements of lay-
offs are emerging from companies in almost every industry forced to make significant cut backs
due to reduced budgets. If you are one of the many who recently learned that you will be out of
work or you fear that you will be laid off, there are things you can do to put yourself in the best
financial position when preparing to lose your job.
♦ The first step begins as soon as you learn the news. You will want to talk with your human
resources representative about continuing your benefits and inquire if you are entitled to a
severance package. Do not forget to ask about pay for unused vacation, personal time and
sick days. Next, it’s time to plan for life without a paycheck.
♦ Reduce withholding taxes. If you have any time left at work, reduce the amount of taxes
taken from your remaining paychecks to maximize your take-home pay. If your spouse
works and you file a joint tax return, have his or her withholding taxes reduced as well.
♦ Extend severance pay. If you’re job is ending this year, and you will
receive severance pay try to get it paid over time like a paycheck.
♦ Plan to manage your severance or savings wisely. If you receive sev-
erance pay deposit the funds into a separate savings account and
make weekly transfers to a checking account. Mimicking a paycheck
will reduce the temptation to overspend.
♦ Act promptly. Apply for unemployment insurance right away.

Since 1995, Nazareth Housing has provided homeless and former homeless children with holiday gifts and dinner at our Annual Holiday Party which took place December 6, 2008 Due to increases in the number of financially challenged families this holiday season there was a growing demand for holiday gifts. We hoped that our past do-nors and sponsors would join us in rising to the challenge. Nazareth Housing is pleased to announce that with the help and generosity of the Real Estate Board of New York, Hogan and Hartson, Ann Martin, Immaculate Con-ception Church, NYU Newman Club, NY Cares, Fir Tree Partners and Hearts of Gold we gave out over 500 gifts. Thank you, to all who shared in making this Holiday Season brighter and memorable for many underprivileged children and their families.

♦ Look for a new job. Post your resume on internet job boards like Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com, but let that be your first
move, not your last. Keep searching for work daily.
♦ Keep networking. Many people are finding employment through their personal contacts. Do not hesitate to ask a friend or family
member if they know of any employment opportunities.
♦ Develop new contacts. Online networking, through sites like LinkedIn.com and Facebook.com, can help you make new connections in your industry. And don’t forget traditional professional organizations, social and service groups.
♦ Take advantage of free help. Look for employment programs at your local public library and other resources. The Labor Department funds more than 2,900 CareerOneStop centers nationwide, where you can obtain resume writing assistance, speak with a career coun-selor and get other information. These centers can be found by visiting www.careeronestop.org or by calling 877-USA-JOBS centers
♦ Cut unnecessary expenses. Take a hard look at your household budget and trim wherever possible. Don’t wait until cash is running low to do it.
♦ Control insurance costs. You may chose to increase the deductable on your car insurance to reduce the premiums. Continue payment on your medical insurance if your company no longer covers you or your family.

Message from the Executive Director
As we begin a new year, Nazareth Housing, like many not-for-profit or-ganizations is faced with growing demand for services and new needs from families that previously were stably housed and financially solvent. Each day we receive calls, emails and referrals from not only the five boroughs of New York but from counties across New York State, neighboring states and from households across the U.S. In the past two years, we have seen a 220% increase in the number of unduplicated households served through our programs and staff. In 2009, I anticipate
that we will serve over 1800 unduplicated households a 35% increase over 2008. The demands stretch our staff and resources which we manage diligently to maximize the best benefit for our families and to ensure our donors dollars do the most good possible. I am grateful to those who have supported our Winter Appeal, which pro-vides critical funds during the coldest months of the year when housing instability and homelessness are the most difficult to navigate for families. The Winter Appeal is cur-rently at 68% of our target amount. If you have not had the opportunity to support the Winter Appeal, please consider making a secure on-line donation at www.nazarethhousingnyc.org and click on the Donate Now button on any page or send your donation to: Nazareth Housing 519 E 11th Street, NY NY 10009.
Thank you for your support of the work we do.
Our Vision
