Don’t forget!

Message from Mr Single I hope that you and your families are all keeping well.

I cannot believe that the time has now come for each of the colleges to publish the last edition of their newsletter for this academic year! However, I do hope that you have

enjoyed receiving them and that they have helped you to keep in touch with your colleges over these recent months. I have certainly enjoyed reading them myself! The good news is

that we are looking to continue with the newsletters next year and want them to be more student-led. If you are interested in getting involved, particularly if you are a budding

journalist, please look out for further details in the new academic year, although you might want to register an interest now with your college staff.

Since the latest announcement from the Government, all of the staff have been working very hard making preparations for our return to school in September. There is certainly a

great deal for us to think about and plan! Please note that I will be sending an update letter home to all parents/carers for the end of this week. Please do look out for this letter as it will provide you with an overview of our plans and will help you to start thinking about how

you will need to prepare for your return to school.

I have continued to enjoy seeing so many Year 10 and Year 12 students back in school for the immersion days, and I hope that you have continued to find these beneficial. I know

that the staff have also really enjoyed seeing you again, and they have been very complimentary about your work ethic and overall response. Very well done to all involved!

I hope that you are all taking part in the PE Department’s Sports Week! The ‘Race Across the UK’ has certainly got off to a great start! At the end of day 2 you had all achieved

1189km – an incredible achievement! Well done everyone! We will definitely reach John O’Groats at this rate, but remember that the aim is also for the form group, college or key stage to achieve this on their own, so keep going! I am looking forward to seeing the final

results.

I know that we still have another week and a bit to go, but I would just like to wish you and your families a very safe, happy and restful summer holiday. I am looking forward to being able to welcome you back to school in September. In the meantime, do continue to take

good care of yourselves.

Best wishes,

Mr Single

Wing Walking Fundraising!

Abbie (Year 13) completed her wing walk in aid of mental

health charities. What a fantastic achievement!

Kerry (Year 13) “I have also been keeping myself fit through

workouts. Other than that I have been having zoom meetings with Brownies as I'm a young leader and have been doing various activities with them, which has been fun.”

Chester (Year 14) “During the lockdown I have been working for Tesco as a temporary worker. I have enjoyed every second. When we went into lockdown I had a choice to either work for Tesco and do something good for the community or sit at home and do nothing. I also recently applied for the Ashford Hospital Radio to become a presenter. I find the best way to help people is through music. When it all started I was doing some theatre bits up in London sorting things out with another nine people to put on a show in July. Of course we had to move it back to around November ish whilst sorting things out and learning new skills like screen acting, short film making with people from the industry. And it's helped me to understand what I want to do and where I want to go.

If I have learned anything from this time is that happiness won’t come from sitting doing nothing but the sense of achievement when you've done something for someone else.”

TV Stars! Alex & Eva (Year 13) were

interviewed by the BBC and appear on interviews on yesterday’s local news and online. They spoke eloquently and intelligently about their experience of lockdown and were a credit to the school.

A Level non-examined assessment essay on Zusak's 'The Book Thief'

Oliver – left Homewood in 2018 Despite the mass sadness & devastation caused by Covid-19. It has also allowed some fortunate ones to seize an incredible opportunity for personal improvement. Whether it’s a new skill, perfecting a talent, adopting an efficient time management routine, improving knowledge, etc. I’ve personally dedicated the majority of my time towards creating a small business, and secondly, teaching myself about money & finance. How? Because of the world’s most powerful search engine, Google. Due to this situation, I’ve been able to fulfil my time with experience, education and business growth. One of the most valuable things I’ve learnt, looking back now, is that every vision and dream can seem overwhelmingly challenging to achieve, along with how the journey seems dauntingly difficult. However, working towards very short term, step by step goals, once at a time, really allows any vision to become a reality. I’ve learnt that the key to progress is organisation and self-discipline. Which is what school teaches, if you fully adapt yourself and commit. My online wine store now delivers to customers every day and it’s never been more fun!

Keiran – left Homewood in 2013

I’m a doctoral researcher in the Materials Physics group at the University of Sussex. During the lockdown I’ve been busy analysing experimental data in preparation for publishing my very first paper. GCSE and A Level Scientists may have heard of a material called graphene. It is a two-dimensional material (meaning it is only one atom thick!) with extraordinary properties such as being over 200 times stronger than steel as well as being an extremely good conductor of electricity and heat.

We produce graphene with the aim of enabling a range of new technologies which are cheaper and more eco-friendly than the materials that are currently used. Examples of things we’re working on include flexible (and smash-proof) touchscreens, energy storage devices and scaffolds for cancer and stem cell research.

The image on the right shows the honeycomb-like structure of graphene. The balls represent carbon atoms and the sticks represent covalent bonds. The second image is a scanning electron micrograph of graphene I produced in the lab. This is an advanced imaging technique that helps us look at the structure of objects at the nanoscale (that is, a billionth of a metre). At this scale, we can’t use a regular microscope; the things we need to image are smaller than the wavelength of visible light! What you’re looking at is a thin film of graphene. The jagged white shards are individual flakes of graphene stacked on top of one another.

Aaron – left Homewood in 2005 My activities haven't really changed from my day to day, other than working from home. My business (foreign exchange broker) is noted as a key worker position due to the fact that we offer services within the banking sector, so my Monday to Friday has been much of the same. The hardest part is keeping focused and not letting the mind wonder and having 5 minutes out here and there which then lead to 30mins or an hour!
