Solve Equations with Variables on Each Side Write and solve an equation to solve each exercise.

plus a $25 travel charge for a service call.
Good Guys Plumbing Repair charges $40 per
hour for a service call with no travel charge.

credits and plans to take 12 credits per
semester. After how many semesters will
Duke and Kila have the same number of
credits?
Inequalities with Variables on Each Side
1. The table compares cell phone plan
rates for two companies. Write an
inequality that can be used to
determine the number of months it
would take Cell Sensation to cost the
same or more than Cell Nation.
Company Initial
Fee
Monthly
Rate
Cell Nation $250 $50
Cell
Sensation $175 $65
2. If you pay a one-time fee of $30, you
can buy tickets for a music concert at a
reduced price of $17. Regular tickets
cost $25. Write an inequality that can
be used to determine the number of
reduced price concert tickets you would
need to purchase in order for the total
cost to be less expensive than the
same number of regular tickets.
2. Trash Management charges its
customers a fee of $25 plus $8 for each
trash can they need emptied. Waste
Away charges its customers $12 per
trash can with no fee. Write an
inequality that can be used to determine
the number of trash cans for which it is
less expensive for a customer to use
Waste Away as their trash service.
4. The Beanery charges $14.99 per
pound for its gourmet coffee and offers a $2.50 off coupon good toward the total purchase. The Brew Master
charges $13.49 per pound for its gourmet coffee and offers a $1.00 off
coupon good towards the total purchase. Write an inequality that can be used to determine the number of
pounds of coffee one must purchase from Brew Master in order to save
money.
5. Satellite Image charges a monthly rate of
$120. “We Are Dish” charges a monthly
rate of $150 and offers a one-time sign
up discount of $100. Write an inequality
that can be used to determine the
number of months it would be more cost
effective for someone to use Satellite
Image as their cable television provider.
6. After a hurricane, the Johnsons had 6
inches of water in their basement that
was being pumped out at a rate of 1
inch per hour. The Grahams had 10
inches of water in their basement
being pumped out at a rate of 2 inches
per hour. Write an inequality that can
be used to determine the number of
hours it will for the water level in the
Grahams’ basement to be equal to or
less than the Johnsons’.
7. The cost for a large cheese pizza at Pizza
Palace is $10 plus $1.25 for each
additional topping. The cost for a large
