CALCAREA
INTRODUCTION
CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES• Chemically calcium is reactive and soft for
a metal.• It is a silvery metallic element that must
be extracted by electrolysis from a fused salt like calcium chloride.
• Calcium metal reacts with water, evolving hydrogen gas at a rate rapid enough to be noticeable, but not fast enough at room temperature to generate much heat.
• Calcium, with a density of 1.55 g/cm3, is the lightest of the alkaline earth metals.
• Calcium salts are colourless from any contribution of the calcium.
General characters of alkaline earth group medicines:Mental character –
Sluggish, Indolent, Anxious
Aggravation from cold (Chilly patient)
Predominantly tubercularInvolvement of nervous
system and endocrine system
Oedema
INTRODUCTION
Calcium is a major mineral element of the body. Constitutes 1.5 to 2 % of the body
weight of the adult human. About 99% of the calcium in the body is
found in the bones. There is a dynamic equilibrium between
the calcium in the blood and that in the skeleton. This equilibrium is maintained by parathyroid gland and chole-calciferol.
Calcium needed by the body for:
The formation and maintenance of bone and teeth
Coagulation of bloodRegulation of neuromuscular
irritability andMuscular contractility.
SOURCE Milk and milk products are main source
of calcium.
Fish, vegetable, fruits, cereals (ragi rich in calcium) and drinking water are other sources.
Green leafy vegetables are the cheapest natural source of calcium but the bio availability of calcium is poor.
Availability of calcium from a good source like milk is adversely affected by the simultaneous consumption of green leafy vegetable.
Recommended in take of calcium (adult) – 400 –500 mg / day.

Non-Homoeopathic uses of Calcarea group of Medicine
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is used in manufacturing cement and mortar, lime, limestone (usually used in the steel industry) and aids in production in the glass industry. It also has chemical and optical uses as mineral specimens in toothpastes, for example.
Calcium hydroxide solution (Ca(OH)2) (also known as limewater) is used to detect the presence of carbon dioxide by being bubbled through a solution. It turns cloudy where CO2 is present.
Calcium arsenate (Ca3(AsO4)2) is used in insecticides.
Calcium carbide (CaC2) is used to make acetylene gas (for use in acetylene torches for welding) and in the manufacturing of plastics.
Calcium chloride (CaCl2) is used in ice removal and dust control on dirt roads, in conditioner for concrete, as an additive in canned tomatoes, and to provide body for automobile tires.
Calcium cyclamate (Ca(C6H11NHSO3)2) was used as a sweetening agent but is no longer permitted for use because of suspected cancer-causing properties.
Contd.
Calcium gluconate (Ca(C6H11O7)2) is used as a food additive and in vitamin pills.
Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2) is used as a swimming pool disinfectant, as a bleaching agent, as an ingredient in deodorant, and in algaecide and fungicide.
Calcium permanganate (Ca(MnO4)2) is used in liquid rocket propellant, textile production, as a water sterilizing agent and in dental procedures.
Calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) is used as a supplement for animal feed, fertilizer, in commercial production for dough and yeast products, in the manufacture of glass, and in dental products.
Calcium stearate (Ca(C18H35O2)2) is used in the manufacture of wax crayons, cements, certain kinds of plastics and cosmetics, as a food additive, in the production of water resistant materials and in the production of paints.
Calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2H2O) is used as common blackboard chalk, as well as, in its hemihydrate form better known as Plaster of Paris.

Doctrine of signature
The remedy is prepared from the middle layers of inner part of the oyster shell. Thus one of the features of calcarea is protection and withdrawal. They withdraw and make a protective layer around them.
Another strong aspect of Calcarea is anxiety and fear. There is a theme of insecurity. The fears & anxieties centre around issues such as money, health. When these basic aspects are not secure, they develop strong despair.

Discovered Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808
•The chemical element Calcium (Ca), atomic number 20, is the fifth element and the third most abundant metal in the earth’s crust. The metal is trimorphic, harder than sodium, it doesn’t cause skin-burns.• It is less chemically reactive than alkaline metals and than the other alkaline-earth metals. •Calcium ions solved in water form deposits in pipes and boilers and when the water is hard, that is, when it contains too much calcium or magnesium. This can be avoided with the water softeners. •In contact with air, calcium develops an oxide and nitride coating, which protects it from further corrosion.
Sphere of action:-
• Affects exclusively the vegetative system,
• causing defective nutrition,• imperfect cell development,• and consequent decay or
destruction of tissue, especially in the osseous and glandular systems.
ESSENTIAL FEATURES• There are three primary causative factors for the
development of a Calcarea phosphorica case: • a) bad nutrition
b) bad newsc) bad weather
• a) Deficient or poor nutrition is required to produce the classical symptoms: rachitis; emaciation; bone diseases; the non-union of fractured bones; anaemic states; slow or difficult convalescence after acute diseases. Specifically in babies: the non-union of sutures, open fontanelles, late learning to walk, late learning to talk, late dentition and troubles incident to this period.
B) Similar to the effect of malnutrition, unexpectedly hearing bad news causes an imbalance in the organism and makes the individual sick.
• These include psychological stresses experienced in everyday life, e.g. grief, anxieties, insecurity, anger, contradiction, insults, etc.
c) Changes of weather, especially to cold and to wet, often cause severe symptoms. Calcarea phosphorica develops rheumatic pains that are worse in the winter disappear in the spring and return in the autumn.
• Another modality of rheumatism observed in Calcarea phosphorica is that special times for aggravation are in the autumn and when the snow is melting, i.e. in the spring.
Head:-
• Crawling sensation runs over top of head, as if ice were lying on upper part of occiput (Verat. alb.) ; head hot ; smarting pain on the roots of the hair.•Delayed closure, or reopening, of fontanelles. (Calc. c.)• Skull soft and thin ; crackling noise like paper.
Mind:-• Children are peevish and fretful. (Cham., Cina.)• Forgetful ; difficulty in performing intellectual.• Electric shock, so severe that the patient could not remain standing. Epileptic spasms. Convulsions of children; but the remedy must be given when not in the convulsion to secure the best effect.
NOSE:-•Coryza ; fluent in a cool room (Puls.) stopped in warm air and out of doors. •Bleeding of nose afternoons. •Nasal polypi, large, pedunculated.
• Rheumatic tearing in the ears when the weather changes to cold. • Ears very cold. Aching deep in ear. Enlarged, painful parotid glands.
Ear:-
Mouth:-•Retarded dentition (Calc. c.), with cold tumors and emaciation.•Tip of tongue sore, burning (Calc. c., Carb. an., Coloc., Kali carb.) ; little blisters on it.•Bitter taste in the morning, with headache. (Bry., Nux v., Carb. an., Puls., Sulph.)
Stomach:-• Unusual hunger at 4 P. M. ; infant wants to nurse all the time.•With every attempt to eat he has bellyache.•After dinner, heartburn and other gastric symptoms. (Carb. an.)•Empty, sinking sensation at the epigastrium. (Ign.)
Back:-Abscess, lumbar; sacrum and lower limbs numb; pain in cervical region in windy weather; as if broken in lumbar region on walking; sacroiliac symphysis as if dislocated or as if separated.Every step felt in sacrum. Sensitive to a draught. Spine: Pott's disease, spine curved, lumbar abscess; curved, tears, shoots, aches, tender; from lifting or over straining, like Rhus; lumbar and sacral regions.
Arthritic nodes on condyles; fistulous opening on ankle; heavy during pregnancy; lower numb, waist to feet, like Calc., but is preferable to Calc. in uterine troubles; caries of os calcis; crawling in soles when riding in a carriage. Rheumatism: especially in cold weather when air is full of melting snow, gets well in Spring and returns in Autumn.
Limbs:-
Stool and anus:-• Constipation, with difficult, hard stool. Bleeding from the rectum and anus
during stool. Protruding piles so painful that he is kept in bed for weeks; the pain is intense standing, walking, from touch; ameliorated by heat; with general sufferings, every sudden cold change of the weather. Piles itch and burn and discharge yellow pus. Itching of the anus in the evening.
• Urine :- Weak and irritable bladder. Catarrh of the bladder. Frequent urging
to urinate. Copious flow of urine. Pain in the neck of the bladder before and after urinating. Aching in the empty bladder. This remedy has cured diabetes mellitus. Violent pain in the region of the kidneys.
• child who is pale, thin, scrawny, very underweight, mentally and physically underdeveloped, slow at learning to walk , a belly that is flabby and prominent or flabby and sunken. Remedies that should be compared are Baryta carbonica, Borax, Calcarea carbonica, Magnesia carbonica, Medorrhinum, Natrum muriaticum and Phosphoricum acidum.
• The remedy should be considered when the head bones are slow in forming or do not keep pace with the growth of the child, when the fontanelles don't close early enough, or even reopen. Clarke differentiates: 'Calcarea carbonica has an open anterior fontanelle; Calcarea phosphorica has both open, especially the posterior.' The skull is often thin and soft, gives way under the pressure of a finger or seems to crackle like paper.
CALCAREA PHOSPHORICA CHILD
Women :- The woman has no better friend than Calc. p.• Her sufferings at puberty when she is slow in maturing are often met by this
medicine. From taking cold at first menstrual period often comes a painful menstruation that lasts during menstrual life, unless cured by this remedy.
• Violent cramping in uterus and groin several hours before the flow starts, relieved after the flow has been fully established.
• The pains make her cry out. Intense sexual excitement (like Platina, Gratiola, Origanum). Weak, sinking sensation in the pelvis.
• Prolapsus of uterus during stool and micturition. Uterine polypus. Labor-like pains at the beginning of menstruation. Copious menstrual flow, with very dark clots and membranes.
• Leucorrhea like white of egg day and night. Throbbing, titillating in external genitalia. Burning in the vagina and uterus during menses. Child refuses mother’s milk. It may be given to a woman who has brought forth one or two children that may be considered Calc. p. babies. The next child will be stronger and have a better constitution.
MODALITIES• Aggravation:- • Mornings ; evenings ; from motion ; artificial light ; from cold ; after eating ; from
juicy fruit ; from change of weather, or from getting wet in rain.• Amelioration:- • After lying down.• Therapeutic Range :- • Similar to that of Calc. c., though not so extensive ; diseases of bones and glands
in strumous, tubercular, and rachitic persons ; non-union of fractures, chronic hydrocephalus, headache of school girls, difficult dentition, rheumatism, dyspepsia, leucorrhoea, phthisis, spina bifida, abscesses, curvature of spine, vertigo of old people, incipient mesenteric tabes.
• Compare :- • Baryt. c., Berb., Calc. c., Fluor. ac., Iodi., Nitr. ac., Phos., Ruta, Sil., Sulph.
CALCAREA ARSENICOSA“.. As this remedy results from the chemical uniting of two deep acting and well proven remedies, one can conclude that this remedy would be long and deep acting, well adapted to chronic illnesses.“
Also called Calcium Arsenicosum. Formula: Ca3(As 03)2. Not to be confused with Calcarea Arsenicica which is the Arsenite of Calcium - Ca3 As 04. Arsenici albi subtilissime pulverate, is a white powder insoluble in water, a combination of Arsenic Acid with Lime. It is dangerous and toxic up to the 3d centesimal; it is used from the 4th Centesimal Hahnemannian.
SPHERE OF ACTION:-
•As this remedy is a chemical union of two well proved deep acting remedies it would most likely appear at once to the mind as a long acting remedy, well suited to many chronic diseases. In fact, it is deep acting enough to cure some of our most stubborn cases of epilepsy. It has made its record in this class of cases. Epilepsy with rush of blood to the head before attack; aura felt in region of heart; flying sensation• Complaints in fat women around climacteric. Calcarea arsenicosa is a mineral remedy of the c-ancer miasm. In Arsenicum there is a feeling: "I need people but I cannot trust them - they may rob me". The patient cannot trust anyone. In Calcium there is a need for security and support. In Calcarea arsenicosa the need for people is almost a dependence, and this along with the mistrust, makes him highly anxious and insecure. He feels: "I may be cheated, let down (mistrustful -Arsenicum) by the people on whom I depend for protection.
Characterstics symptoms:-
Head.– fear of birds,Violent rush of blood to head with vertigo. Pain in head better by lying on painful side. Weekly headache. Benumbling headache mostly around ears.Stomach.–Region of stomach distended. Enlarged liver and spleen in children. Pancreatic disease; relieves burning pain in cancer of pancreas. Belching with saliva and beating of heart.Urinary.–Kidney region sensitive to pressure.
