Arborist The arborist has been to school and checked all the trees on the school grounds and around the Church. All the trees now have silver tags on them with a number. The numbered trees have a report on the arborist’s computer system. This helps to identify and monitor any work that needs to be done on the trees, all of which at the moment are in very good health. The children were very interested in the tags and what was happening with the trees. They now know that the school trees are being looked after by the arborist. Term 1 - Curriculum Days As mentioned in last fortnights newsletter we have two curriculum days this term: Tuesday the 10th March (week 7) - after the Labour Day public holiday, and Friday the 20th of March (week 8) - the day after our Twilight Sports. Both of the two curriculum days are about looking at the long term educational needs of the children at Holy Family and what we, as a staff need to do to cater for the children's needs. It is important that all staff are able to attend. In the past we have offered childcare and found that sometimes when we do this, we have very few children needing to be looked after. If we only have a few children needing to be looked after, we will discuss alternative arrangements with the parents involved. This will ensure that all staff can attend these very important days. If you are unable to look after your child on these days please let us know by contacting the school office by Friday March 6. Steve Twomey Principal

The Junior School enjoyed an excursion to Doveton Library last week, as part of our Inquiry concept: 'Identity and Diversity.' During this season of Lent, we are reflecting on our promises in Religious Education. In Literacy, the Year 1/2s have continued their exploration of Fairy Tales. We have been focusing on Hansel and Gretel by studying the characters, settings and plot. Soon we will be writing our own Narrative retell about the story. In Mathematics, we have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects. We have made 2D shape pizzas, classified 2D shapes, investigat-ed 3D objects and made our own 3D objects using nets. We have been learning about captur-ing photos and drawing images on iPads in Digital Technologies.

In 3/4 students continued exploring their own identity during Inquiry. Students have investigat-ed their cultures, traditions, hobbies, interests and faith, and focused on what makes them special and unique. In Mathematics we have been learning new strategies for addition and subtraction, particularly using a number line to add on and count back. In Literacy, students have been working to-wards creating a narrative text by using different sentence structures and including descriptive adjectives to expand their ideas in their writing. In SEL, students have been identifying and ex-ploring their emotions both in the classroom and on the yard. They have been collaborating with their peers to discuss situations which may affect how they feel throughout the day.

The students in Years 5 & 6 have been thoroughly immersed in Australia’s colonial past over the last 2 weeks. In Inquiry we are gathering information and in Writing we are using this information to assist with composing historical narratives. In Religious Education we are exploring the history of the Catholic Church in Australia. The students are expressing great interest in our historical past and are eager to learn more! We have been lucky enough to have a memorial box on loan to us for 2 weeks containing actual items from World War II. While it doesn’t contain items from the colonial

times, it has been fascinating to look at!

In Maths we have finished our unit on time and are currently working with fractions. For Digital Technologies we are exploring dif-ferent digital devices, working out the purpose of each, how they function and whether they are input, output or storage devices.

Selamat datang di tahun 2020. Welcome to 2020. In Term 1 Indonesian/Visual Arts, our Senior students will explore the use of soft pastel and newspaper in creating their artwork. The key themes this year will be places we went during the holiday and our school HEART values.

Our Junior Students will look into how to describe our feelings using Indo-nesian words. They will also explore features of an Indonesian traditional mask called “Topeng”. They are then encouraged to design their own Topeng while practising the Indonesian language.

We also congratulate Joshua (Year 3) for his effort and creativity in creating an artwork which will be presented in the upcoming Catholic Education Melbourne’s Visual Arts Exhibition. Detailed information about the Exhibition will be provided in a separate flyer.

Below is the work in progress of student work in Indonesian/Visual Arts. Salam,

Pak Kris

Holy Family Primary School is committed to providing a child safe environment and takes active steps to ensure any person authorised to conduct ‘child connected works’ does not pose a risk to their safety or welfare. To achieve this, the school implements screening processes, including Working with Children Checks (WWCC), to assess and verify their suitability

Holy Family Primary School ensure that non-teaching staff, contractors, volunteers and visitors are of suitable character and do not have a relevant criminal record that poses an unjustifiable risk to children.

Volunteers and Visitors are required to maintain a ‘Volunteer WWCC’. These checks are free of charge. Volunteers and Visitors can apply for a ‘Volunteer WWCC’ via the Working With Children Check Website. https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au

If you have a current WWC card and have not provided a copy to the school, can you please bring your WWC card to the office and Bernadette will make a copy. Suzanne Deefholts Child Safety Officer

Sacrament of Reconciliation (Grade 4

students)

World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement led by Christian women who welcome you to join in prayer and action for peace and justice. World Day of Prayer events are held on or near the first Friday in March each year all around the world. Each year a different country prepares the Ser-vices, highlighting their culture, joys and problems. This year the women of Zimbabwe have prepared the prayer service and resources to be used.

Prayer

God of peace and freedom, we welcome you in our midst. We praise you for your love, which sur-passes all understanding. We praise you for who you are, now and forever.

Response: You are an amazing God.

Creator God, we praise you for the natural resources we are called to care for, like the vegetation, minerals, big animals, waterfalls and forests of Zimbabwe.

Response: You are a gracious God.

Jesus, we praise you for the dignity of human life, and especially for the friendliness of Zimbabwe’s hardworking people. Thank you for helping us to love and respect one another.

Response: You are the Bread of life.

Holy Spirit, we praise you for enabling us to gather in worship in Zimbabwe and around the world. Amen.

I spoke with Jessica who is in the 3/4 about what she has been learning in SEL this term.

Jessica what have you been learning in SEL?

In 3/4 we have been learning about emotions like being proud, excited and relieved and when we might feel these emotions. Why do you think it is important to learn about emotions?

Sometimes you might feel something but you don’t know why. There are reasons for feeling the way you do.

Can you explain the importance of emotions a bit more?

Once you understand the reasons why you might feel something you can be in charge of your emotions. For example instead of yelling at someone when you are angry you might take deep breaths and walk away.

Why do you think it is important to be in charge of your emotions?

It is important to learn about them so you can control them because sometimes they can get out of hand.

What has been your favourite SEL activity?

We traced a body and put a negative and a positive side. We wrote words that show positive self talk like, “I can do it if I try,” and negative self talk like, “I give up.”

Are you enjoying SEL?

It’s a lot of fun. There are lots of fabulous websites about emotions. One of my favourites is https://kidshelpline.com.au/ which has information presented developmentally from ages 5-25.

Key take-aways from my interview with Jessica about helping your child learn about and ex-press their feelings are:

Tune into cues and listen to your child’s feelings

Jessica - Empathy,

Nisan, Celeste, Alice and Nathaniel - Re-spect,

Congratulations to Harry from Year 6 and Isaac from Year 2 for receiving Empathy Heart

Regular reading is crucial for children in the early stages of their education and is the most important home learning you could engage in with your child. There are a number of things you can do to sup-port your child’s reading development:

Make a regular time to read together.

Ensure that you have chosen a quiet, comfortable

place to read and that disruptions are kept to a mini-

mum.

Before reading, allow children to look through the pic-

tures and make predictions about the story. Flip

through the book and look for any features (e.g. con-

tents, glossary, blurb, etc.).

Allow your child to hold

the book and turn the

pages themselves.

Encourage your child to point to the words if they are losing track of where they are up to.

Simone Crist—Literacy Leader

Parents and Cybersafety

Teaching your child to be cybersafe will help them to engage with the online world safely and responsibly and can assist to protect them from online risks.

At Holy Family School cyber safety and responsible use of technology is explicitly taught. It is important that parents also talk with their children and set guidelines for home internet and technology use.

Common cybersafety issues for children include cyberbullying, accessing or sharing inappropriate content and protecting their personal information.

For more information on how you can be a positive online role model for your child visit https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Suzanne Deefholts—Learning and Teaching Leader

Helping with Maths at Home

Every child can experience success in mathematics. It takes good teaching, coaching, encouragement and practice, both at school and at home.

Talk about maths in a positive way. Having a positive attitude towards maths encourages children to want to try.

Connect maths to everyday life and help your child un-derstand how maths influences them (e.g. shapes of traffic signs, walking distance to school, telling time, measurements used to cook).

Play family maths games together that add excite-ment such as checkers, junior monopoly, maths bingo and Uno.

Encourage persistence in mathematics. Some problems take time to solve.

Lea Drury

Mathematics Leader

Today nine of the senior students went to the Noble Park District Swimming carnival. It was a blast! We had an amazing time, but we were also very nervous. At first, I thought I would come last but luckily I managed to place 4th in my heat. Alice thought it was interesting and great to try something new. The water was freezing but that didn’t worry us. It was really thrilling and we all tried our best. Frazier, Gabe and Ayuri placed second in their heats and we hope they go on to division. By Celeste & Ayuri Gabe: I had fun at the swimming carnival because when I was in the pool I was ready to swim. When the ref told us to go I didn't know what I was doing so I went as fast as I could. When I lost stamina I slowed down. When I was finished I touched the wall and looked around. Only one other person stood before me! I won 2nd place! Jalishan: It was really fun. The water was freezing. I tried my best. Clara: It was fun and I was a little bit scared but I tried my best.
