The term of office of the 5 elected Council members will expire atthe conclusion of this year's annual general meeting. Electionprocess has started in July, and results will be announced at theAGM to be held in December 2015. Fellows should have receivedthe nomination form earlier. Completed nomination form mustreach the Academy office before 5 p.m. on 18 September 2015.

 

Annual Subscriptions

Demand notes for the 2015 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows in January2015. Fellows who have not settled their subscription before 30 June shouldhave received a demand note for subscription and surcharge. Please settle assoon as possible.

Reminder:

1.  All payments must be received by the Academy before 30 September.According to Bylaw 6.4:

If a member's fee or any other moneys due by a member tothe Academy is not received by the Academy within 9months after such payment falls due, despite two writtenreminders by the Academy to pay, the member shallautomatically forfeit his membership.

2.  It is Council's policy that late subscriptions received by the Academyafter 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscriptionamount.

3.  For Fellows who have authorised payment via bank transfer / creditcard, payments will be deducted from their bank accounts or credit cardautomatically.

4.  Fellows aged over 70, or have reached 70 before the beginning of thenext subscription year, do not need to pay any subscription and will notreceive a debit note.

5.  Fellows residing outside Hong Kong or have reached the age of 65 andhave retired from all remunerative practice/job/business must submitwritten applications for reduced rates before 31 December if they wishto enjoy the reduced rates next year. For details, please visithttp://www.hkam.org.hk/fellows_area/reduced_rate.pdf

"Promoting innovation in risk management,professionalism and medical ethics"

Nature of the AwardThe MPS‐HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award isjointly organised by the Medical Protection Society (MPS)and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). Theobjective of the Award is to encourage medicalprofessionals to promote the subject of patient safety, riskreduction, quality and professional standards, and medicalethics.

Who is Eligible for the Award?Medical practitioners registered in Hong Kong, who submit papers on any of thefollowing topics, are eligible for the Award:

A plaque and a cheque for HK$20,000 will be award to the winning author, whowill be notified 2 weeks prior to the presentation ceremony.

The paper, entitled "Transforming quality andpatient safety in specimen identification andprocessing through a novel approach to barcodetracking" by Dr. K.C. Lee was selected in 2014. Dr.Lee received the plaque and cheque presented bythe Academy's Editor, Prof. Ignatius Yu.

 

Lecture by Dr. Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, 12 November 2015

Hong Kong Academy of Medicine is organising aLecture, entitled "Being Mortal: Medicine and WhatMatters in the End" by Dr. Atul Gawande, MD MPH on12 November 2015 at the HKAM Jockey Club Building.Dr Gawande is a surgeon, writer, and public healthresearcher and practices general and endocrinesurgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, US.He is also Executive Director of Ariadne Labs, a jointcenter for health systems innovation at Brigham andWomen's Hospital and Harvard T.H. Chan School ofPublic Health and also founder and chairman ofLifebox, a non‐profit organisation making surgery saferglobally.

In the Lecture, Dr. Gawande will address how humanbeings experience mortality is changing rapidly anddramatically across Asia as people live longer and havegreater access to health care. Many of the changesmirror a transformation that occurred in the West tomedicalise the end of life with the most common placefor dying shifting from the home to the hospital. Themedicalisation of mortality, however is an experimentthat is failing in terms of cost and even moreimportantly in terms of suffering. Dr. Gawande'sbestselling novel "Being Mortal: Medicine and WhatMatters in the End" gives directions for recognizingthat well‐being for most people is larger than meresurvival.

Strategic Planning Retreat of HKJCILCM, 25 July 2015

HKJC ILCM organised a Strategic Planning Retreat on 25 July 2015 at HongKong Academy of Medicine. The aims of this event were to present theproposed curriculum for HKJC ILCM Comprehensive Simulation EducatorCourse and to review strategies to further the success and sustain the missionsof HKJC ILCM.

Twenty‐two healthcare professionals participated in the event and sharedtheir ideas and experience with Academy's President Dr. Donald Li, Vice‐

President (Education and Examinations) Prof. Lau Chak‐sing, and HonorarySecretary Dr. Lau Chor‐chiu in the discussion session. A closing remark wasgiven by the President at the end of the discussion, followed by an enjoyablebarbecue lunch. The Retreat provided the participants with a platform tointeract and share their experiences in the simulation‐based medicaleducation.

Work meetings and dinner with World Health Organisation(WHO) held at the Academy, 11‐12 August 2015

Two experts from WHO, Dr. Rick Brennan, Director of the Department ofEmergency Risk Management and Humanitarian Response and his teammember Dr. Ian Norton, technical adviser and project leader of ForeignMedical Teams, recently paid a visit to the Academy. A number of meetingswere organised to discuss the strategic planning and capacity building of theAcademy’s venture, Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness andResponse Institute (HKJCDPRI). The main purpose of the meetings was to sharethe important works of HKJCDPRI and our working partners in emergencyresponse training. The WHO experts shared their vast experiences andperspectives on risk management in humanitarian relief operations. During themeetings, some potential areas of collaboration on training and accreditationwere identified. More deliberations on these issues are required to determinethe optimal way forward.

The Academy hosted a dinner in honour of the special guests of WHO. Manycolleagues and partners were invited to join this occasion, includinggovernment officials from Food and Health Bureau and Department of Health,Dean of local medical school, representatives of Hospital Authority andMembers of Governing Board of HKJCDPRI. President gave heartfelt thanks toDr. Margaret Chan, Director‐General of WHO and two of her fellow experts,Dr. Brennan and Dr. Norton who travelled a long way from Geneva. It isanticipated that HKJCDPRI would build and promote a well‐structured platformfor accrediting trained professionals in disaster management, with theassistance of WHO. Dr. Margaret Chan complimented the Academy on its jobwell done in disaster preparedness and response training. She mentioned thatHong Kong has built a strong system, and the Sendai Framework is just thebeginning. She also encouraged the Academy to participate in the WorldHumanitarian Summit held next year to network with global experts of thefield. The dinner was an enjoyable one with fruitful conversations.

President attended the 50th AnniversaryScientific Meeting of the Federation of MedicalSocieties of Hong Kong as an officiating guest.The theme was "Care for Advanced Diseases",which provided the medical professionals withthe opportunity to share new perspectives andvaluable insights on treatment and palliation ofadvanced diseases.

 

Cook Medical Thought Leadership Forum, 7 July 2015

President was invited by COOK Medical to participate ina panel discussion about the topic of 'SustainableHealthcare in Hong Kong: Challenges ahead', seeking toaddress the question: 'Is Hong Kong's current model ofhealthcare delivery sustainable and, if not, what needsto change?'. Other discussants included Prof. Jean Woo,Dr. Alexander Ng, etc.

 

Grand Opening of Hong Kong Integrated Oncology Centre and Hong KongIntegrated Imaging and Endoscopy Diagnostic Centre, 11 July 2015

Dr. Li was invited to officiate the grand opening of the Centre. Other officiatingguests included Secretary for Food and Health Dr. the Hon Ko Wing Man,Deputy Secretary for Food and Health Prof. Sophia Chan, Dr. C.H. Leong, Prof.Gabriel Leung, etc. After the ceremony, the officiating guests were given a tourof the facilities.

 

2015 Annual Academic Conference of General Practice Society of ShanghaiMedical Association, 17 July 2015

President attended the Annual Academic Conference organised by theShanghai Medical Association in Shanghai. He delivered a presentation onmedical ethics, which inspired most of the participants.

 

Annual Conference of Hong Kong College of Health Service Executives, 25 July2015

President attended the Annual Conference and delivered a presentation on"Sustainability of Health Care Services through Innovation". He alsoparticipated in panel discussions with other discussants including Prof. PeterYuen, Dean of College of Professional and Continuing Education, PolyU andProf. John Rasa, President of Australasian College of Health ServiceManagement.

 

49th Singapore‐Malaysia Congress of Medicine, 31 July‐2 August 2015

President, Officers and College Presidents or representatives participated in the49th Singapore‐Malaysia Congress of Medicine held at The Academia. Thetheme of the Congress was "Greater Integration for Better Patient Care".President delivered a welcome address at the Induction Comitia and was amember of the stage party at the Fellowship Conferment Ceremony, which wasalso attended by the HKAM delegation. In addition, President presented on thetopic of "Medico‐legal Challenge in Hong Kong" at the Medico‐legalSymposium.

President joined a dinner hosted by Dr. Lee Kheng Hock, President of theCollege of Family Physicians Singapore to catch up with good friends andcolleague of family medicine.

Hong Kong Medical Journal launches a re‐styled website (www.hkmj.org) whichoffers visitors a more user‐friendly experience! The new layout is optimised forany screen size such as desktop, tablet or smartphone.

The HKMJ has recently received its first official impact factor in the 2014 editionof the Journal Citation Reports in the ISI Web of Knowledge published byThomson Reuters. The 2014 impact factor for the HKMJ is 0.872.

Efficacy and safety of hylan G‐F 20 injection intreatment of knee osteoarthritis in Chinesepatients: results of a prospective, multicentre,longitudinal studyA total of 110 knees of 95 patients with primary

knee osteoarthritis were treated. This studydemonstrated that hylan G‐F 20 is effective andsafe to treat knee osteoarthritis in Chinesepatients.

DH to conduct the 2015 Health Manpower Survey

Department of Health will embark on a new round of HealthManpower Survey on registered doctors in September 2015.The result will be used in health manpower planning andtraining. All registered doctors will reserve a self‐administered questionnaire together with a letter forrenewal of practising certificate in September 2015. Pleasereturn the completed questionnaire by 31 December 2015.

 

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW)

"Breastfeeding and Work ‐ Let's make it work!" is the themeof the World Breastfeeding Week scheduled for 1‐7 August2015. Department of Health will organise a celebration eventon 4 August 2015, jointly with Hong Kong Committee forUNICEF (UNICEF HK), UNICEF Baby Friendly Hospital InitiativeHong Kong Association, and the Hospital Authority. Besides, acommunity support campaign "Say Yes toBreastfeeding",organised by UNICEF HK, with Food andHealth Bureau and DH as the collaborating organisations, willbe kicked off to engage workplaces, public places and thepublic to support breastfeeding mothers.
