FawwazSukri,MalaysiaNadineFineArt,Malaysia–Room4018FawwazSukri(b.1987)drawsinspirationfrom1960’sromanticcomics.WorkinginaPopartstyle, the artist examines the genre of thetragicomedywherebyaspectsoftragicaffairsare presented in comical forms. The collageworkinSukri’scompositionsdepictsachainofeventspertinent to themaineventoccurringin the “big picture”. Conceptually, his workaddresses deep-set problems within society,particularly as they relate to gender. Theapproach in conveying a specific narrativeallows Sukri to express the complexity ofunderlyingperceptionsofhumanmorals.

Oftenworking in a hyperrealist style, Maarouf’s work isrecognised by a dynamic use of contrasting coloursand shapes,aswellasdistinctive faces, subjectsandfigures. Having grown up in Syria, the history andbeautyoftheoldstreetsofDamascuswerealwaysafascination. Now a resident in Dubai, Maarouf hasfoundnewavenuesforexplorationandopportunitiesforcreativegrowth.

Depicting soldiers, workers and everyday people, includinghimself,asiconsandheroesofChineselife,theartistrendersthecommonmaninboldcolourswithsimple,butdefinedlines,layeredtogiveacontemporaryporcelainlookthatresonatesoffthecanvas.

Sobrane,Australia,Room4103Internationally acclaimed wildlife artist,Sobrane, has spent countless hourswatching birds, and observing theirmovements and behaviours. In her livelyandenergeticcompositions,theartistaimstoconveytheuniquenessandindividualityof each animal. Sobrane uses a mix ofmediums and expressive brushstrokes tocreateher large-scaleworkson linen.Shecreatively transforms pigments of spraypaint, inks, enamel, pastels and charcoalintobeautifullyrenderedpieces,conveyingthedepthandsoulofeachcreature.

ZhangHui,ChinaLingArt,China–Room4317BlendingEastandWest,ZhangHui(b.1957)drawsinspirationfromMasterLinFengmian,considered a pioneer of modern ChinesepaintingforcombiningChineseandWesternstyles. Taught by his father who studiedunderMasterLin,Zhang’suniquemethodofusing sinuous lines and bright colours todepict female figures is reminiscent ofJapanese Ukiyo-e painting. The artisttravelled extensively to Japan where helearned traditional Japanese Ukiyo-etechniques and subsequently incorporatedthemintohisfemaleportraits,layeringthemwithexoticnessandsensuality.
